Anyone in Oklahoma knows a week of quiet weather is extremeby. A quiet weather week with temperatures in the 60s and 70just getting crazy! Am I right? Well, that is what we were dealt foNot too shabby, if you ask me. Of course the Oklahoma windand down the plains, but thats why ponytail holders and buninvented. I hope everyone got to enjoy the pleasant temps whimini-vacation.

Now that we are headed toward March, a few more cold spells sights on Oklahoma. These next few rounds of arctic air look toand not nearly as cold as the ones we were hit with at the first ofstate still really needs moisture. In the past month there has only bin Norman. This is well below average and has led to an extremthreat. The wind is continuing to aid in drying out vegetation afires that do get started. Heading into these next couple of week

will be a big concern. Moisture looks hard to come by and thepretty stinkin strong. I remember walking around on the OU camplike this, feeling like I had to walk leaning forward so that I wobackwards. The dust in my teeth was always fun to dig out, andbe as tangled as Pomeranian that skipped months of grooming. Jin Oklahoma, but hey, at least its not combined with a -20 degrfor now.

For the Norman Tiger boys and girls basketball teams, the yearhas not been a smooth one. There have been ups and downs, good victories and bad losses. The boys and girls have achance to correct that with good performances in the regionaltournament.

The Lady Tigers will have a tough opening game as they hit theroad to take on Southmoore. The Tigers took down the Sabercats

last month; however they accomplished this without Southmooresnumber one player, Sarithia Hawkins. The fres hmen Tigers havebeen playing better, and Bethany Franks will be a star in the nextthree years. Shelby Thrailkill is also starting to find her offensivelegs. Taylor Ely is the leader of the team and needs to go outwith a bang in her senior year.

The boys team has the talent to be a tough out in the tournamentas they take on Edmond Santa Fe, the host school. In the regionalis Lawton Ike and Yukon as well. Cooper Clark is the scoringleader for the Tigers, and the Tigers go as far as Cooper goes.Michael Kish has started to make some shots, and they will needall of them if they expect to a dvance.

Basketball season is coming to a close, and the Timberwolves boysand girls basketball teams are set for the regionals and will have somegood matchups in an effort to make it to the state tournament.

The Lady Timberwolves will host a regional once again. They will playEdmond North in the first round of the regional, and in the first game itwill be Lawton Ike and Mustang. The girls should find their way out ofthe regional with Alexa Scott, Haley Woodard and Bri Kuestersteffen.

Scott has been big on the glass lately with six straight double-doubles,and Woodard is starting to get her offensive game going along withKuestersteffen. Page Canty may be the X-Factor for the T-Wolves asthey march to state.

For the Norman North boys, they will go on the road for theirregionals. The T-Wolves will match up with West Moore in the firstround of the regional, which also includes the host team, Mustang, and they will take on Putnam City. Mustang is much improved this yearunder former Douglass headman Terry Long.

The Timberwolves boys and girls both have great chances to advanceto the state tournament, but they have to get it done in the re gionals.

Saint Patricks Day is coming up quickly, and what better wayto indulge in your Irish spirit than with brownies and Irishliqueur?

This recipe is super simple and one of very few that I chooseto make with a boxed mix. I love to bake (obviously), butsometimes nothing beats a classic fudge brownie boxed mix.Am I wrong for saying that? Oh well .

Regardless, if you have a killer brownie recipe, feel free touse it and make a big batch! But before you bake them intosquares, bake them in a mini cupcake pan instead. This iswhat makes the bite of these brownie bites. Makes sense, right?

Okay, so youre going to make the brownie mix a little differentlythan what the box says, because youll be adding Irish creamliqueur to it. If you want non-alcoholic brownies, use heavycream (party pooper). Add the other two ingredients as listedand bake. To top them off, youll make a powdered sugarglaze also using liqueur to add a kick. Cream the butter, addthe liqueur and add the powdered sugar and youre good to

go! If you want them to be green, add a little dye, but if I donteat green eggs and ham, then I probably wouldnt eat greenglaze on a brownie.

Hats off to ya, and have a great Saint Pattys Day!

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a mini cupcake panwith cooking spray.

    2. Beat together the brownie mix, 1 cup Irish liqueur, vegetableoil and eggs until the mixture is smooth.

    4. Pour large spoonfuls into the cupcake tins and bake until

the centers come out clean when a toothpick is inserted. This isaround 20 minutes. Let the brownies cool.

    5. For the icing, beat the butter until its creamy; add in theliqueur until incorporated. Slowly beat in the powdered sugaruntil desired consistency. Spoon over the brownies or dip theminto the glaze. Let set before eating.

*This delicious recipe was concocted with love by my best friend Meghan M.

The Sooner baseball team had start power last year and made arun to the Super Regionals before losing to a very talented LSU teamin Baton Rouge. It was long after the season that rumors circulatedabout Head Coach Sunny Golloway leaving the Sooners to becomethe head guy for Auburns baseball program. Along with Golloway, gone were the solid, major league arms of Jonathan Grey andDillon Overton. Matt Oberste and Jack Mayfield took good bats andleadership with them as they departed as well.

And in comes a familiar face. Last year in the first round of thepostseason, the Sooners faced Virginia Tech; their head coach wasPete Hughes, now the head man for the University of Oklahoma baseball team. Many people haveasked me what I think of the Sooner baseball team this year and how they will do. I can tell them that Ihonestly do not know.

Pete Hughes is a well-respected man in college baseball. He brings a great energy and work ethic andasks that of his players as well. He has been quoted as saying, I want my ball players out there havingfun and not worrying about making mistakes. That negativity is something many people close to theprogram under Golloway say that the players felt. They felt that if there were a mistake, then it wouldcost them playing time. If I had to make a prediction, Id say Hughes is high energy and will do goodthings with this team.

Here is a look at some of the guys on this years Sooner baseball team. The pitchers, as with any goodbaseball team, are going to be crucial to the success of the team. Adam Choplick is coming off of hissecond Tommy John surgery, so his performance will be interesting to watch. Chop will get the ball onthe opening Saturday against the Seton Hall Pirates. Tall at 68 and boasting a power arm, a healthyChop could be the Friday night starter by the end of the season. Jacob Evans and Jake Elliot will makeup the other two starts in the seasons first series. Pitching in the Big 12 will be huge for the Sooners, and they will need help out of the pen from guys like Ralph Garza, Jr., Drew Krittenbrink and KendallLadd.

On the offensive side for the Sooners, three freshmen will pepper the starting lineup against Seton Hall.Niko Buentello, Sheldon Neuse and Joshua Ake will all get the opening day start. Craig Akin will stillsupply the speed at the lead off slot, and at catcher theres a guy who has worked hard on gettingstronger: Hector Lorenzana. Cody Thomas yes, that Thomas who is a back-up quarterback for thefootball team is a solid baseball player as well and has some power in his bat.

The Sooners will play hard and have fun, as will the Sooner fans as the Hughes era begins.

    Thomas Richard MoormanThe Man Tip

The Man TipCleaning Out the ClosetSome of you may be familiar with my regular column, The Art of Manliness. Today I am making a bold marketing maneuver and rebrandingit as The Man Tip. Seven hundred words dont feel sufficient to really get to the artof manliness. And besides, the art of manliness has beendone. What Boyd Streetneeds is a shot of life, something fresh: The Man Tip. The truest essence of manliness cant be summed up in sevenhundred bi-weekly words. But what we can do with seven hundred words is touch on the tip of the iceberg: The Man Tip, bringing youpractical tips for daily life as a man. I know you need it because I get you, and I get you because I am just like you. Just a guy, like you,

getting along in the world. My wife insults my taste in clothes, just like you. My personal philosophy regarding fashion entails a focus on comfort. For instance, if mywife is nagging me about my clothes, I put on something that she wont nag about because I dont care about how I look as long as sheleaves me alone. I get to wear my Thunder jersey when Im hanging out with the guys, and thats enough for me until she starts naggingme about spending too much time with the guys. Truth is I would probably spend more time with her if she let me wear my Thunder jerseywithout running her mouth off about it, but, again, Im just trying to keep myself comfortable, so I generally let her nag me out of whateverId prefer doing because thats the level of comfort that Im into, and I pride myself on how laid back I am.

Guys, let me give you a mans tip on keeping yourself comfortable in your clothes: clean out your closets. I dont have much of one myselfbecause my wife takes up all three closets in the house. Most of the clothes I have left I keep in Rubbermaid containers in the garage, whichIve turned into my own personal den. During one weekend every spring and one weekend every fall, I like to lay out what Ive got left frommy glory days on the work bench in the garage and put eyes on these remnants from my younger self.

First, I take the least appealing item I can find and cut it into rags to symbolize that the old must be sacrificed in service of the new. Duringthe spring, I take whatever pair of jeans still fits and cut them into shorts to symbolize that the old may be made new again. I will probablynever wear these. Next, I will keep one item for hope, something that definitely doesnt fit me anymore. It will give me a goal to work toward. From whats left, I put on pants, shoes, a shirt and jacket. Everything else goes back in the Rubbermaid container for the next season, andfor two days I ignore my wifes nagging and wear the clothes I want and drink as much beer as I please and listen to my old rock and rollrecords. I am someone different still a shadow of my former self, but different.

Im not as lean as I use d to be. The clothes remind me of that all weekend. The pants pinch my fat. So I drink more to keep myself comfortable,

but that just gives me acid reflux, which makes me irritable again. I let out a little frustration by smashing CDs. By the time the weekend isover, Ive come to peace with letting that part of my life go, and my closet is a little bit cleaner a nd Ive got a little more room to work within the garage. Not a bad deal.

If thats not a man tip, I dont know what is.

Behind the Garment Bag: Inside Waldens Cleaners

The dry cleaners are far more interestingthan youd initially believe. When TonnyWalden gave me a tour of the facility,we passed by a handful of spic-and-spanwedding dresses.

I guess I shouldve come here to find mywedding dress, I said with a smile.

Tonny replied, Yeah, you wouldnt believewhat people leave behind weddingdresses, comforters, fur coats evenHalloween costumes. But we never get ridof them; we hang onto them forever. Wehave clothes that are here so long that thebags are falling off.

Its clear how dedicated the Waldens areto their trade. Tonny and Sara are the third-generation leaders of a business that hasbeen around for over 80 years, so theWaldens arent strangers to above-and-beyond customer service.Humble Beginnings and HistoricalImpactEnvision an era of dusty streets, stagnantbusiness and war on the horizon. Waldensstarted in 1933, sprouting from Evans

and Burt cleaners at 121 North PorterStreet. Evans and Burt was run by second-generation owner Fred Waldens uncle. Then Freds parents Jess and Vivian Waldenbought it out and took it over; during theprocess Waldens was born (and then theDepression hit). They managed to stayafloat by cleaning naval uniforms for thewar. Now Waldens has four locationsclose to you no matter where you live inNorman.

Blending the Old With the NewIn 1969 Fred Walden married Carolyn, and together they took over the businessin 1972. We want to keep traditionalcustomer service and quality and tie in withthe new generation and quality, Carolynsaid. Fred and I brought it into the nextcentury from his mom and dad. They wroteeverything, every ticket, by hand. Fred andI got [business] automated with computers.

Tonny and Sara have literally now taken itto automationits truly amazing. She added that it was never the expectationthat their son Tonny would take over thebusiness, but if he wanted to, they wouldbe thrilled. He did just that, and married hiswife Sara, who came into the business fulltime around 2003.

If It Aint BrokeWeve kept traditional cleaning methods,Tonny said proudly. We discuss eachchange to the business as a family and tryto make the best judgment calls possible.

Sticking to tradition can be a good thing.

They have six different dry cleaningmachines for six different colors to avoidcombining and keep whites white. Theyalso stick to homemade cornstarch insteadof the processed chemical starch manycleaners use today. Instead of flowingthrough one or two filters like many drycleaning companies, Waldens uses eightfilters. They also use hand spotting (for extrapressure and a little extra elbow greaseif need be).

We now bar code every item that comesin, Tonny said. He demonstrated thebenefits of this to me by scanning a red-checkered shirt. Then it popped up on anearby computer, listing the fabric, thedate entered, the size, and so on. Theyknow where each garment is and where itsgoing.

The tricky part isnt nailing down a process.Their method is tried and true, after all.Our cleaning process doesnt change, butthe most difficult thing to keep up with is thefabrics and the way theyre made, Tonnydivulged.

A Business Built on RelationshipsWaldens Cleaners has always tackled thetask of cleaning the Pride of OklahomaMarching Bands uniforms after those100-degree football games. I asked howlong theyve been doing it. Fred replied,Almost 40 years. We did it since beforeCoach [Pride director Gene Thrailkill] about two years before. His wife addedthat they also do dry cleaning for the athleticand drama departments, OU Housing andFood and other organizations from campus.Their business is all based on relationships. Were on a first-name basis with ourcustomers.

Interestingly, the Waldens did the drycleaning for the filming of the movie Twister. The crew stayed at whats now SoonerLegends. Wed swing by the trailer late atnight, got the clothes done, and returnedthem the next day, Carolyn said.

I asked how they enjoy working with family.Fred promptly said, I dont know how youcould beat it.

Being a third generation really makes meproud to have the cleaners. We try to followthrough with our quality. Were not actually

together all the time. We try to meet weeklyto regroup.

In any case, one can immediately tell thatwhen they walk into Waldens, there is anair of tradition, close-knit workers and theold-fashioned Norman charm that makesthe city great.
