The above-average winter precipitation and below-average temperaturesheard it over and over -- When is this winter going to end? Where is sarctic air! Well, unfortunately the atmosphere doesnt obey our calendarOklahoma can sometimes be pretty brutal. November, December, Januarwere all below average temperature-wise, and March is off to a very coldprojections keep the month of March below average too.

Our recent winter storms have been fascinating to watch from a meteorolThe storm on Sunday, March 2nd brought us everything from rain, freezinsnow, hail and strong thunderstorms. Oh, and dont forget the earthquakeget it all here in the Sooner State. Winter may be holding its grip on Oklafew weeks, but eventually the polar jet with lift north. The subtropical jet wwell, bringing rich gulf moisture back to the southern plains, and thunderback into the forecast. Now is the time to start to thinking ahead to storm sure you and your f amilies are prepared. Get your safe spot figured out n

the storm shelters and make sure you have a disaster kit put together. Mato prepare for April and May. There is no way to tell this early on what kmay have in Oklahoma, but the odds of a repeat of 2013 are extremely Oklahomans had their way, theyd skip straight from March all the way to

However, if youre a fan of the cold, then you are in luck. We have a coublasts headed down the pipe and even another chance for sleet and snoware coming. Dont forget, Daylight Savings begins March 9th! We lose again longer days!

March 18, otherwise forever known in books to be Oatmeal Cookie Day, is a great reason to bake exactly that: OatmealCookies.

While I was growing up, I HATED oatmeal cookies! They had raisins in them (gross) and didnt contain any chocolate chips, but sometimes those deceitful things would show up at a party, so young and innocent me would grab one thinking it was achocolate chip cookie. Those nasty wrinkled grapes betra yed me.

Fast-forward to twenty years later, and I might like oatmeal cookies more than other cookies. I guess my resentment of themhas slowly dissipated over the years. Whats great about oatmeal cookies is that if you get a good base recipe, you can addany kind of delicious morsel into the batter. Im talking raisins, peanut butter chips, Reeses Pieces, white chocolate chips, cranberries, chocolate chips, M&Ms or butterscotch chips. You name it, and it can p robably be added in to this recipe.

Im going to share with you a fantastic oatmeal cookie recipe. I make them frequently and use add-ins of whatever I mightbe craving at the time. For the last batch I added in cup chocolate chips, cup Reeses Pieces, and cup peanut butterchips. They were fantastic and loaded with peanut butter flavor. I couldnt stop eating them! The recipe Im sharing with youtoday is going to be half Peanut Butter M&Ms and half semi-sweet chocolate chips.

The recipe calls for simple ingredients and simple directions, but be sure to follow them all otherwise youll end up with aflat, crunchy cookie instead of a soft, chewy one. Another tip: Do not pass up on chilling them. Yes, it takes 30 minutes awayfrom you eating these tasty cookies, but trust me, dont skip the chilling.

    1. In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugars untilsmooth. Add the egg and mix until combined. Add the vanillaand mix until combined. Set aside.

    2. In a large bowl, toss the oats, flour, cinnamon, bakingsoda and salt together. Add the wet ingredients and mixuntil combined. Fold in the add-ins. Chill for no less than 30minutes.

    3. Preheat oven to 325 F degrees. Line two large bakingsheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Rollballs of dough and place 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-11minutes. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes beforeplacing on a wire rack to cool completely.

What started in 2007 with 60 athletes has grown to a worldwide event with nearly200,000 registered athletes competing to discover the fittest man and woman on the planet.Thats right the CrossFit Games are once again upon us!

The Open is an online format that started in 2011, giving men and women who partake inCrossFit a chance to compete in five workouts in five consecutive weeks to see where theyrank in the world and their region. Those who register and compete have to submit theirscores online with a video, or prove that their scores are validated by a CrossFit affi liate. They have the chance to push onward to the 17 regionals worldwide. There are 12 regions

in North America, as well as sites in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australia.Again, this is a hugeworldwide event.

In the Open, anyone who does CrossFit can compete s imilar to the US Open golftournaments. Just register and pay your $20 entry f ee, and youre in! Those who competewill go against the likes of Rich Froning, Jr., the three-time CrossFit games champion, andJason Khalipa, Dan Bailey and Graham Holmberg, who are previous CrossFit Gamewinners. The same goes for the women; they will compete against Annie Thorisdottir, Kristan Clever and Samantha Briggs.

Many people may not know who those athletes are. Some even question if the contestants are real athletes and if the CrossFit games area true measuring stick for what the winner is dubbe d The Fittest in the World. If you havent seen the Games, I say tune in or YouTubethe events. Then tell me if they are athletes or not and if they deser ve the attention they get while the games air on ESPN.

CrossFit is all about functional fitness and helps pe ople in many different ways. Just like many other new things, people hear the bad andfocus only on that. I receive many questions about CrossFit. People say, Its too tough, I cant do that, it looks crazy. Well, yes, itistough. Yes, it is a bit crazy, but just like anything else, you get what you put into it. There are days that kick your butt, and there are dayswhen you hit a personal record and you are sky high. Like many other workouts, there are some dangers, but thats why you have to besmart and pay attention to your body and your coach.

The Crossfit movement is here and the community is growing. The Super Bowl for CrossFit is months away, and now the playoffs havebegun. Everyone has a shot to shine. The next couple of months will see average Joes give their all. The elite will make their way to

Carson, California for the Games to compete for prize money that has grown from $500 to $275,000.CrossFit boast that it is Forging Elite Fitness, and those in the Open, whether they make it to Carson or not, are elite.

A new era for Oklahoma high school football begins next year. Forthe largest class, 6A, there will be two divisions now with 16 teamseach. Norman High is in the largest division. Heres a look at whomthe Tigers will face next year.

It all begins with the Cross-Town Clash, which will remain the same, followed by the first new opponent in the non-district season with DeerCreek coming to Harve Collins.

The district schedule begins with the long-standing rivalry against theMoore Lions, followed by the Westmoore Jaguars. The Jenks Trojansmake a visit to the Harve, followed by the Tigers taking a trip to theeast side to play Broken Arrow.

The Edmond Memorial game will be played at the Tigers home.Yukon will be the last road game of the year before the Tigers endtheir home schedule with the Putnam City Pirates and the EdmondSanta Fe Wolves.

This will be an interesting year for the Tigers, and a lot of the teamsin 6A Division 1 will form new rivalries while keeping traditional onesin the schedule as well. I dont know what this means for the juniorvarsity schedule yet thanks to logistics, but the season should be a lotof fun with Jenks and Broken Arrow on the schedule ever y year now.

Just like the Tigers of Norman High, the Timberwolves will have anew schedule for the upcoming football season. North is a memberof 6A Division 1, just like Norman High. The next football seasonwill promise a few new teams on the T-Wolves schedule.

The one main game is the same: The Cross-Town Clash will remainthe first game of the year. Next we can expect a rematch withYukon, a thriller from last year.

The district schedule begins with Westmoore, a team the T-Wolveshave struggled against over the past four years. Up next is theOwasso Rams at home, then a trip east to play the Tulsa UnionRedskins.

Following playing two of the east-side giants, the T-Wolves willplay the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, theMustang Broncos, but will play them at home again. The EdmondNorth Huskies and Putnam City North Panthers are next up. Thefinal two games of the year see the T-Wolves taking on the MooreLions and welcoming the Southmoore SaberCats to the schedule.

For Norman North there are some familiar faces as well as somenew ones. The first five games are brutal and will let people knowwho the T-Wolves are ea rly on.

    T.R. MoormanThe Man Tip

The Man Tip 2: Self-RespectCleaning Out the ClosetLet me tell you a story.

Just imagine two young men. Their names are Rick and Carl. Theyre practically boys, but theyre practically men. They are particularlyplain. At school they dont get a lot of dates, but their natural nonchalance will make them esp ecially attractive to women at a later age (butwere not concerned with that just yet).

Rick and Carl, for their 14th birthday, get a brand new balloon-blowing machinejust like they wanted. Their father, William, gave it tothem, because he is proud of them, although hes not always very present, as far as fathers go. What Father forgot to tell them was thatthere were plenty of extra balloons. Mother didnt see the point in disillusioning the boys, because the terrible popping noise of balloonsfrightened her a great deal.

Careful not to pop that balloon, she says to them as they open the door to the garage to find an extension cord long enough for them toblow up their balloon on the driveway in front of the house. Its a nice spring day, enough said.

Lets do it on the lawn instead of the driveway,Rick suggests, and Carl agrees. They set up the balloon-blowing machine in the thick grassand take off their shoes and socks. Rick adds, Lets see how big this one can get! Do you want to go first, or me?

I want to go first,Carl says. Rick doesnt mind. He doesnt have a me-first mentality. Not that Carl does, necessarily. Thats just the way thisspecific incident takes place. They take turns pushing the inflate button. Carl, Rick, Carl, Rick, Carl, and Rick. That goes on for a while. Theballoon gets bigger, and their eyes get bigger as the balloon grows. It is the biggest balloon they have ever blown.

But then Carl starts pressing the deflate button.

What are you doing? Why are you deflating the balloon?Ricky screams.

The truth is Carl is Moms favorite. Dont feel bad for Rick, because Rick is Dads favorite, so it works out in a sense. What this does or doesnot have to do with Carl pressing the deflate button, I wont venture a guess. Its not my place. Thats Carls business, and I suggest you keep

your nose out of his business. I will say this, though: There aremore balloons inside, and Mom would give them another balloon to pop ifthey pop that one, which they are about to do. Rick and Carl dont know that there are more balloons, but lets face the truth: There are moreballoons inside. Were running out of time.

Ricky holds down the inflate button and then Carl holds down the deflate button, and they wrestle to the ground, and pretty soon the balloonpops.

This is an actual story that happened to my brother Martys kids last week, but the more Ive been thinking about it, the more it occurs tome that this story is a metaphor for why, in my opinion, the fans were to blame for the Thunder loss to the Heat in 2012: no self-respect.

And thats this weeks Man Tip.

Revisiting the PastNorman class of 64 hosts its 50th high school reunionThere were no cell phones. There were only four channels on the television because colorbroadcasting had just sprung onto the scene. The only movie theaters were the SoonerTheater on Main Street and The Boomer on Campus Corner. If a couple wanted to go out fora date, they spent 25 cents for a hamburger, 10 cents for fries and 15 cents for a Coke. If agroup of girls wanted to shop, they had no mall just the shops on Main Street. It was safe

enough to walk around town. This was the sweet, simple life in the year 1964 in Norman, Oklahoma.

This June, Norman High Schools Class of 1964 will celebrate its 50-year high schoolreunion and connect over the old times and fun memories.

The plans are tentatively set to begin Friday afternoon, June 6. Attendees will enjoy a golfouting at Belmar Country Club.

On Saturday Morning, June 7, they will take a tour of Norman High before they celebratelater that night at OConnells on Campus Corner. Check in begins at 6 p.m. and light hordoeuvres will be served. Each person will be res ponsible for purchasing his or her food anddrink.

Finally, the weekend-long celebration will cap off on Sunday morning at June 8, whereeveryone will meet for brunch at Main Streets Golden Corral.

The head honcho in charge of the event, Janet Tyrrell, says more detailed information will beforthcoming. She adds that to sign up for the golf tournament, contact John Thompson. Hiscontact information is available on the website, the Facebook Group and Facebook Page.

I asked Janet what she remembered whenever she looked back on the Norman of 50 yearsago.

Young men were not constantly worrying about being drafted for war. President Kennedywas assassinated when we were seniors and that changed everything. Soon young menwanted to join the military to ser ve their country because they thought we would be at war.Others were figuring out how to move to Canada. The Cuban Missile crisis happe ned whenwe were sophomores and attitudes began to change. Then the assassination just added toit.

And what about style and culture? The music before the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivanshow was much more traditional. When the Beatles appeared in our senior year menbegan to let their hair grow longer and were in trouble at school for it. Women had to wearskirts or dresses to school. We had to wear either bobby socks with our loafers or nylonsand dress shoes. Even if we walked to school and it was cold and snowing, we could notwear pants. We could wear them under our skirts, but we had to take them off when we gotto school and put them in our lockers.

And thankfully at that time they didnt have snow days like we do. We rarely got snow days.I can only remember three in three years, if that.

[The time] may sound dreary but we had lots of fun and we had friends we saw and talkedto every day in person face to face. We played actual board games and we had actualhuman interaction, not electronic. OPEN
