Shes hooked on shing. She hunted down her rst deer at age 12.Most importantly, she can track and evade deadly tornadoes. Dont mess with Lacey Swope!

Lacey Swope is an on-sta meteorologist or News9 who will now be contributing weather updates to Boyd Street. When severeweather rears its ugly head and the Oklahoma atmosphere unleashes its ury, she is the point o contact between Gary Englandand the StormTrackers, helicopter, control room and master control. In other words, shes kind o a big deal!

Swope says shes an Okie through and t hrough. Weather was always par t o her lie. Her earliest memories include lying in thegrass on a quilt with her mother as they compared the clouds foating by to animals and other shapes. When dangerous weatherroared in, she collected hailstones to measure and save in her reezer. Even while in the close quarters o the closet, hiding romtornados, Swope was assured she was meant to be a meteorologist when she grew up.

A math and physics acionado, she was thrilled to learn meteorology entailed the two topics. Ater her internship with News9, sheknew she wanted to broadcast instead o research. She graduated cum laude rom the College o Atmospheric and GeographicSciences in 2010 with a degree in meteorology, a minor in mathematics and a minor in broadcasting in other words, a triplethreat!

From there she took her rst job in Sioux City, IA, where she covered the 2011 tornado that wiped out 60% o Mapleton, IA. Inspite o her success, Swope jumped at the chance to move back to her homeland, where she now says, I eel truly blessed to beback in the southern place and in Sooner Nation! as we agree, Norman is the place to be.

Ater meeting her husband as a ellow coworker at Rib Crib in high school, the high school sweethearts stuck together. They metthrough a mutual riend when he discovered, and was imp ressed by, her hunting skills. My husband, Tyler, and I just celebratedour our-year wedding anniversary on May 24. Not one o my brightest moments ... getting married in May. Weve only gotten tocelebrate two o our anniversaries so ar because that date has been particularity stormy in Oklahoma, and when storms re, theNews9 studio becomes my home.

Lacey admits shes a little shocked to now be contributing to a magazine she aithully read in college. I asked about her avoriteBoyd and Main Street destinations, to which she responded

I LOVE to eat! I seriously think I could live on burgers and be happy or the rest o my lie. That being said, I love burgers atOConnells the Theta burger is to die or and with a student discount I seriously ate there multiple times a week in college.Hideaway Pizza is second to none,McNellies is abulous and the shoppingall along Campus Corner is awesome!

Lacey recalls her years at OU ondlyand describes the National WeatherCenter as a weather lovers paradise.

I mean, seriously, i you havent been, you are missing out! She adds, Greatplaces to study, great ood, greatpeople and the weather sphere provideshours o entertainment.

When time permits, Lacey will be alsoupdating her Twitter and Facebook tokeep us updated on the bipolar weatherconditions. You can ollow her at www.acebook.com/laceyswope.wx. Shealso says i you add her on Twitter @laceyswope, she will ollow you back!

Were glad to welcome the hardcoreLacey to the Boyd Streetteam!

When you sit back and look at the year in review or the Norman High sports teams, it is not without promise. The Tiger ootball team won their rst playo game in years. Coach Nation has set a very solid oundation, and Norman isnot just a ootball team, but has also become a program that other teams across the state must always k eep an eye on.

On the hardwood the boys and girls basketball team made strides to compete at the highest level and should be set or runs

at state or both teams i not next year, then the very near uture.

Heading into spring sports, the Tigers had teams that made their mark as well. The Tiger baseball team was much improvedand had many, many games decided by just one run. They battled hard in the Yukon regional beore alling to the Millers, ateam that made it to the state seminals.

On the pitch again it was a solid year or both the boys and the girl Tiger soccer teams. The boys played one o the most epicplayo soccer games I have ever seen, lasting through overtime and 12 rounds o p enalty kicks beore alling to the NormanNorth Timberwolves. Coach Drummond, a legend in the world o soccer in the state o Oklahoma, will most certainly rel oadand have the Tigers playing at the highest level once again.

On the track or the Tigers, Colin Pasque deended his title as the 6A best pole jumper with a jump o 156. Imond Robinson, the young man who paced the Tigers ootball ground game, nished ourth in the 100-meter dash.

Just like the Timberwolves, the Tigers set a great oundation or uture Tigers to reach the highest level possible. Even with twoschools in Norman, not like the bigger schools in the east, Norman High has made its mark on the spor ts calendar year.

This school year was one o the most i not the most successul year in sports or the T-Wolves. The all and winter gave hopeto the spring teams and the spring spor ts answered the call.

The deending state champion boys soccer team played or the state title once again; however, the boys could not completethe task, alling to Edmond North 2-1 in the state title game. The Timberwolves did have one o their players, MauroChichero, become the seventh Norman North soccer player to be named the USA Today Gatorade Player o the Year.Chichero will be asked to help lead the T-Wolves again next year.

The Timberwolves young baseball team made a valiant run at the state title in baseball. Last year Edmond North becamethe rst team rom the west side o the state to win a title in 15 years. The T-Wolves made a run taking down Bishop Kellyand a very game Yukon team on the way to meet a powerhouse in Owasso. North did tally the rst run o the game and thecrowd was rocking. However, the undeeated Rams were just too tough and ended up bea ting Norman North 5-1, ending

their season undeeated or the r st time in their storied history at 36-0.

On the track both the boys and girls teams had some great individual and team eorts. The boys 4x100 meter rel ay teamwon the state title by beating the Jenks team down the stretch with the likes o Byan Payne, Corbin Cleveland, Jordan Evansand Redord Jones. Meanwhile Haley Woodard continued her onslaught on the state tra ck meets deending her state title inthe 400-meter and winning her rst 200-meter run.

All in all, not a bad year or the team in green. A good oundation has been set or the underclassmen to achieve the lotygoals the seniors have set or them ater this great year in Timberwolves sports.

There are ew things that I enjoy more than settling down to watch an old movie with ariend. In the past ew days, Ive had a ew riends who were disapp ointed with their movieexperiences ask me why movies today just arent the same as they used to be. What madethe magic go away?

While there are a lot o things that make movies today b etter than those o the past, thereare denitely a ew dening stylistic dierences that can help to debunk the mysteries omovies rom dierent eras.

First, you have to consider the sheer bulk o the lm industry today. With technology beingwhat it is, its not terribly dicult or the average Jane or Joe to nd the right cameraand the right people and put together an independent lm. There are more productioncompanies than there are words on this page. I you watched one lm every day this year, you wouldnt even come close to seeing all o the eature lms that came out in 2012. Withan output that large, it is only to be expected that there will be some rubb ish in the lot.

When lm was new, though, the output o lms was signicantly smaller, and making alm took an incredible amount o money, resources and orethought. It still does, o course, but comparatively speaking, the early days were much more dicult. Because o this, viewers ran into ewer bad lms. The old movies that we watch today are the survivorso cinematic selection. They are the ttest, the ones that have been deemed good enoughto be watched over and over and over. So, while we continue to be disappointed with thebad lms o today because no one has warned us, we usually only see the gems o theolder days unless we intentionally seek out a bad movie.

The fip side, though, is that we have grown accustomed to the way that movies are madetoday, which means that it is dicult to have patience or old movies unless weve trained

ourselves to. Modern lms move quickly through shots and scenes, whereas old lmslingered on and returned to shots much longer and more req uently than were used toseeing. The eects are cheap and cheesy. The language is oten outdated. Still, many arewilling to tackle these obstacles in order to appreciate and enjoy good lms.

For the next time you are discouraged at the movie theater, just remember that the lmyouve watched wont be the one that our grandchildren pull out as an old movie. It willbe that one you saw our times in the theater last year, or the one you have on preorder, orthe one you cried at the ending o. The good ones will make it through, just as they alwayshave.

Was it the play o Patrick Beverly that cost the Oklahoma City Thunder a spot at the NBAtitle again this year? Was it a lack o scoring rom the bench that derailed the numberone seed in the Western Conerence? Did Kevin Durant run out o steam in the WesternConerence seminals against Memphis? What will the ront oce do this year to addressthe teams needs and issues?

These are all questions Thunder ans and NBA experts will be asking and talking about alloseason. This in act may be one o the most important oseasons in the brie history o theThunder.

Without question Russell Westbrook being lost with a knee injury ater game two o the seriesagainst Houston was a huge blow to the Thunder in their que st to reach the NBA Finals.Gone was the 24 points a game and the leadership and court management. Westbrookalso has a certain killer instinct that it seems some o the other Thunder players lack. Durantis without question the best basketball player on the team, but I think we ound out thatWestbrook is the teams most valuable player.

Questions i the Thunder will amnesty the depleting talents o Kendrick Perkins are swirling about. Perkins was brought in to handle thebags o the best teams in the Western Conerence. He was outclassed and outmatched in both series the Thunder played in this year, especially showing no skill in any ashion against the Memphis Grizzlies as Z-BO and Marc Gasol sliced and diced the Thunder rontcourt.Whether Perkins will be back or not is a huge question the ront oce must answer this osea son.

All season long, I talked about how the lack o other people scoring on a regular basis would be a downall o this team. When Westbrookwent down, my ears were realized as Durant got very little help in most o the games without his running mate in Westbrook. Kevin Martintried and, in a ew games, showed fash with back-to-back 25-point perormances. Serge Ibaka was up and down throughout the playosand still shows that he is very raw but could end up being a very good i not great player in the NBA.

The old man Derrick Fisher, just like Martin, had fashes, and i it was not or Fisher in some o the games, the Thunder may have madean earlier exit in the playos. Mistakes late in the nal two games may raise s ome eyebrows, but I am sure Fisher would stay in OKC

or minimal money. I do not know i the Thunder will keep Martin; however, they need to look or another scorer to help Durant andWestbrook.

Reggie Jackson showed he could be another person to count on in the uture. At times in the playos, he had great moments and silly, young exuberance that led to turnovers and oensive ouls in crucial times.

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are great NBA players and both have a chance to someday be in the hall o ame. The only thing I amscared o is that in the NBA the window o opportunity is feeting and so small, so I just hope that the Thunder have not become a team likethe Utah Jazz and just make the playos every year with no title to speak o. This is an important oseas on or the Thunder ront oce andgeneral manger Sam Presti.

Oklahomas Best Kept SecretAt the close o 2012, I neededa getaway and needed one ast.My ancs mother and sisterwere quick to excitedly chatterabout Echo Canyon Spa Resort,

perect or relaxation, good oodand scenic views.

O o Exit 55, Echo CanyonSpa Resort is not even a tanko gas away. Nestled in thepicturesque Arbuckle Mountains,it has a beautiul orchard inront, which is the source o theirdelicious homemade jams. It hasa distinctly homey eel and is arrom the bustle o the city. Ratednumber one on both Trip Advisorand BedandBreakast.com, it isalso one o the best spa resortsaround and certainly lives up tothe hype.

With the summer quickly approaching, there are weddings and anniversaries aplenty. I youre looking ora beautiul getaway close to home to celebrate with your honey, this is an excellent option or an indulgentweekend. And its easy to nd!

I cannot sing Echo Canyons praises enough. The accommodations are luxurious, and each room has itsown distinct eel. Couples who wish to be secluded can also book the adorable Lady Jane cottage. Assoon as I walked in the Chardonnay Chalet, our room, I was greeted by the scent o lavender, a replace,a Norwegian pine ceiling, a French our-poster bed that elt like a cloud and a balcony overlooking thegrounds (and, i youre lucky, wild turkeys). Oh, I cant orget the Jacuzzi just across rom the bed!

Ater shimmying on some sot, warm robes they provided, we walked to the Aloha Spa just across romthe mansion. While getting my pedicure, I was struck by how nice the sta was. Its not oten I chat thewhole time during a pedicure, but I did and elt completely taken care o. My anc elt like a new manater his massage. Next time, we will have to try the couples massage together to add to the intimacy andrelaxation o the weekend!

I youve read my past articles, you know I could write orever about well-prepared ood! I you sharean appreciation or ne dining, you will not be disappointed at Echo Canyon. They served me the bestood Ive ever had. Ever. Thats a bold statement, I know, but its true. We ate a candlelit dinner at theirrestaurant, called the Baron o Bee, which uses the owner Mrs. Van Horns recipes.

First we had a rereshing glass o a Hibiscus drink accompanied by a crisp salad with choppedwatermelon, which was eye opening but wonderul. Next we had garlic bread resh baked, toastedbrown on the edges, and buttery, along with homemade pesto. As or the entre, it rotates, but the ideais the same: you get to taste three dierent meats along with a couple o sides . We had melt-in-your-mouth

let mignon, hazelnut-crusted halibut and moist duck with plum sauce. I cant suciently describe how liechanging they were, but dont even get me started on the strawberry cheesecake and chocolate mousse. They are beyond words.

Even today I spread my souvenir Echo Canyon preserves on toast and reminisce about the impeccablecustomer service, relaxing and aromatic spa, my good nights sleep and their p henomenal ood. As myanc wrote in the guestbook, Ive never been to heaven, but Ive been to Echo Canyon. Now that thereare two new rooms, its a great time to book a weekend visit. Ater all, its the closest thing to heaven, close to home.

Book it. Visit www.echocanyonmanor.com or Echo Canyon Spa Resort on Facebook and treat yoursel.

When I was asked to conceptualize a pieceor Boyd Streetentitled Couples Fun inNorman, I thought that I didnt want justone plain view o how couples have unin Norman. There are all kinds o diere nt

people and dierent couples in our greatcity, and subsequently there are all kinds oways to have un. I am a middle-aged (or atleast I hope not!) mother o two boys, and Iknow that I cant speak or an entire city asto what un is, so I de cided to ask a wideswath o people or a brie description otheir avorite ways to have un in Norman(especially in the summer when theres moreroom or the adults to play).

However, as I began writing theintroduction to the collected interviews Ireceived or this piece rom both riendsand strangers alike, I heard the tornadosirens blare. Now, as I type this I amwatching the horric destruction tearingthrough Moore, and I realize what a ragileplace our beautiul city is. The des tructioncould easily turn east and back south andthreaten our own homes, orever changingthe ace o the city we have all invested

our lives in. And more importantly thanthat, it makes my heart hurt or those inMoore who have been robbed by nature oeverything that they have worked so hardor. Our hearts and prayers go out to thoseamilies aected by the tragedy.

It is my hope that this will help us all toappreciate our surroundings. Not just inthe sense o the city o Norman that wehave collectively constructed and investedin, but more importantly, what we havebuilt as a community o people. It is ourinterconnected relationships, our collectivestrengths and personalities that make thiscity great. A city is really just a large webo relationships, starting with two, thenucleus o a amily, and spreading outwider and wider. As we strive to haveun in the Oklahoma heat this summer, aswe all rightly deserve, let us be aware o

how ragile and beautiul this large web orelationships is. Let us nd ways to investourselves more deeply into the beauty oour city, this wonderul organism inside owhich we all live.

As I conclude this introduction, the stormshave subsided, and the sun begins to shineupon the destruction. As I look back on thislist o quotations obtained rom riends, respected members o the community andpassersby rom the streets, I cant help think

what a dierent meaning these words mighthave now had, given a short dierence indistance. I hope this will serve as a recordo a peoples love or their great city, allo which can be gone in a ew horric

moments. Again, our hearts and prayers goout to those aected by this trying tragedy.

When the catastrophic Moore tornado hit, the need and appreciationor rst responders skyrocketed. As I saw children being lited rom thedebris and the city being made sae rom allen power lines and naturalgas leaks, my gratitude or these men and women risking their lives orthe greater good overwhelmed me. First responders are our everydayheroes.

Firehouse Subs knows this and its ounders lived it. I youre looking orphilanthropic ood, as I lightheartedly dub it, Firehouse Subs is theplace to go. It created a nonprot called the Firehouse Subs Public SaetyFoundation, which supports EMS teams, reghters, grants and so on.The oundation once donated a lie-saving piece o equipment called anauto pulse to a re ghting team, worth $13,000. The chain literally saveslives.

More recently, the beloved sub chain (including the locations in Stillwater,Tulsa, Ft. Smith and Norman) donated 2,000 sandwiches to the RedCross, EMS and Operation Blessing or Moore relie eorts according toJim Costello, Firehouse Subs area representative.

Costello went on to say, Firehouse Subs was ounded by two reghtersin 1994. There was one store in Jacksonville, FL. The day they opened, they werent sure theyd be open the next day. Well, they had a line outthe door. From there we thought, we have something here.

Firehouse Subs was ounded by brother reghters, Robin and ChrisSorensen. Their ather was a retired captain with Jacksonville FireDepartment, which thats how they got their start. They all shared a love oood and amily.

When I asked Costello what set Firehouse Subs apart rom other substores, he responded that, Were not just another cold sub. The processincludes meat, cheese, toasted bread and preset toppings. Customers canget rid o them based on their preerence. The USDA has our categorieso meat prime, choice, select a nd other. Prime is top 5% o all themeats. Were there with choice meats, just under prime. You can taste thedierence.

Customers come in and say the roast bee actually tastes like roast bee and as Costello said, he thinks customers can taste the dierence withtheir choice Virginia honey ham and smoked turkey breast.

We have about 623 stores. We want 2,000 by 2020, said Costello,

who oversees the Oklahoma City and Wichita markets. Now we haveranchisees who have agreed to develop 21 or 30 stores. We opened ourrst store in Stillwater on March 11.

Further plans include opening one on Northwest Expressway next week(during writing o article). Costello and his team are working on anopportunity in Moore, and then another will spring up in Quail Springs,Nichols Hills or Yukon.

As the Sorensen brothers say, Firehouse Subs only operates inexcellence. With their ocus on creating a amily-riendly atmosphere andserving both customers and community, you cant go wrong!

Lunch on a Tank Full. Thats a loaded statement right there. Ater all, whatkind o tank are we talking about? How big is your tank? Do you even havea tank? What kind o miles-per-gallon can we assume this tank has? Are wetalking about getting backater lunch, too? Or are we just trying to get tolunch on a tank ull? Are you on your lunch break? When do you have to be

back or work? Do you have a big bladder or a small one? Are we tryingto use the whole tank? Why didnt anybody think o these questions beore Istarted writing the article? I I keep asking questions, will I be nished writingthis article sooner? These are things we should know.

So lets make a ew assumptions. I youve got enough time and money to useup a whole tank o gas or lunch, then youre probably independently airlywealthy. (I know Im not, although I am a reelance writer, so my lunches canbe as long as they need to be. I dont, however, have enough money to useup a whole tank o gas or lunch, which is also because I am a re elancewriter.) Now, i youre independently wealthy and have all this extra timeand money to eat lunch out somewhere, then I be t you drive something akinto a Lexus ES 350. (The ES stands or Extra Special, I believe.) The ES 350,according to my thorough research on the Internet, nets an average o about 26 miles-per-gallon between the city and the holds about 14 or so gallons o uel. I my calculations are correct, that means youve got about 364 miles in your tank o(This is a lunch on a tank ull, not a bed-and-breakast sort o trip. Thats an entirely dierent article.) That means youve gomile radius to venture out or lunch, i youre driving a Lexus ES 350 (you lucky dog).

With that sort o mileage, one possible destination is Alva, OK, ando places to eat lunch in Alva. According to Urban Spoon, anyway. to Alva, personally, although my grandather did some time there asthe 70s, may he rest in peace. For what Ive read, though, Reds Pla

establishment, serving lunchtime steaks and BBQ. Forrest, Urban SpoI promise you will Love [sick] this steak. You will not go a way unha

RDM adds, Reds has excellent ood, and when you are nished, stgame room or a unique game o snooker. I believe the tab le to be tNorthwest Oklahoma. Give it a visit and you will enjoy. I you donthat level o resear ch, then I dont know what youre complaining abone with a Lexus ES 350.

O course, i youre not driving a Lexus ES 350, chances are youreout o uel beore you make it back to Norman. For example, i youVolkswagen Beetle, then you are a hippy. Just kidding. You are hip. driving a Volkswagen Beetle, youre getting about 28 miles-per-gallo

a 12 gallon tank (336 miles per tank, or 168-mile ull tank radius), which means youre going to run out o gas somewherreturn, in Oklahoma City, most likely. So Alva isnt the place or you, Beetleowner and operator. I dont know why you would ever go to Alva anyway. Not when all the cool people are going to Pryor Cree k, OK, which is withinyour ull tank radius, or FTR. So maybe you want to try JLs Barbecue, just oo Highway 69. Unlike Alva, I have been to Pryor Creek (a 164-mile driverom Norman; I was there on our separate occasions or high school debatetournaments). JLs is a staple in this smallish Northeast Oklahoma city. You might

need to stop in Claremore on your way ba ck at a cheap hotel to sleep o yourheavy meat drunk, however.

I heavy meats and sauces and ried okra are not your avorite are, then trySam & Ellas Pizza Joint, near South Elliott and Southeast 22nd Street. Althoughthe moniker playully alludes to salmonella, the only poisoning you need toworry about is gout, because these pizzas are so richly favored and delicious, you wont be able to stop yoursel at just one or two slices. (EDITORS NOTE:You cannot contract gout rom eating at Sam & Ellas. This is clearly a veryunny joke. On the bright side, gout is reerred to as the disease o kings.)

These Subs Are On FireFirehouse Subs is a chain on a mission

    - Great Gru -

What are the top sub options atFirehouse Subs?

For me personally, I lovesmoked turkey and anythingwith mushrooms is a go. I

got The Engineer and bit intoa toasted sandwich with pip-ing hot turkey, hearty sautedmushrooms and Swiss cheesethat melted the llings to the

    crispy bread.

Costello says that the top choiceat Firehouse Subs is the Hookand Ladder a delectablemelding o turkey, honey ham, melted Swiss cheese and ullyinvolved mayo, mustard, let-tuce, tomato, onion and, i de-sired, a dill pickle on the side.

Surprisingly good? The NewYork Steamer: bee brisket, pastrami, provolone, mustard,

    mayo and Italian dressing.

The Smokehouse Bee andCheddar Brisket: envision slow-ly smoked brisket Im talkin16 hours with BBQ sauce and

    cheddar. Its almost sinul.

All I need to say about themeatball sub is that its out o
