Finding History & Culture in Maine by Peter Taylor (Findeverythinghistoric.com)
I was talking to a friend from the Southwest a few weeks ago about historic real estate in New England, Maine in particular. “Have you ever been to Augusta or Portland?” I asked. “No, I wish,” he replied matter-of-factly. “I’ve never played there, and Portland is just too rainy for my taste.” It took me a few seconds, but then I realized he was talking about the Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia and Portland, Oregon.
In many parts of the country, Maine doesn’t receive a lot of attention as a place to live and work or as a hotbed for historic real estate and architecture. There is no major Case-Schiller metropolis, no cross-country highways or ports, and for five months out of the year you’d better like winter sports and warm fires (I lived in upstate New York for many years and went to college in northern Vermont, so I have a reasonable point of reference here). Yet, this is exactly what people love about Maine. Things haven’t changed much in many towns since the first summering tourists and second homeowners began escaping Downeast well over one-hundred years ago.
As a result, the historical and architectural design of Maine homes is a mix of style, age, location, and history that is unique to the East Coast and the US. Many coastal and interior Maine towns were settled two-hundred or more years ago, and retain many of their original Georgian, Federal, Victorian, Queen Anne homes and commercial buildings. On the summer coastline, early resort towns on Mount Desert Island and others gave birth to a mix of architecturally-significant waterfront mansions and understated family compounds, some of which have yet to change family hands in more than five generations. Mix in many still-working fishing ports, and it ends up being hard to drive more than a few miles without coming across something architectural or historic that makes you tap the breaks.
There’s also something strangely egalitarian about Maine’s real estate from an outsider’s perspective compared with other coastal resort areas along the East Coast. It’s not uncommon to see a 9,000 square foot Tudor mansion sharing a waterfront promontory with a rustic, un-winterized two-bedroom cottage. That was my family’s house on Mount Desert where I spent many summers while I was growing up. Simple, modest, a small step up from camping--and designed to stay that way. What mattered is that we both shared the same unobstructed views of the craggy coastline and the mountains of Acadia National Park.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that my wife and I have been looking for a reason to get back to Maine. Our new start-up business is a real estate website called Find Everything Historic. It is dedicated to showcasing and selling historic properties throughout the country and worldwide, and we knew that Maine should be on the top of our list. Our end-of-the-year surprise was to recently discover The Swan Agency, a Sotheby’s affiliate based in Bar Harbor whose listings include some of the most historic properties inland, as well as along the coast. We’re now listing over a dozen of The Swan Agency’s historic properties on our site and it’s given us an opportunity, twenty years later, to finally reconnect with Maine’s architectural uniqueness and history.

The crystalline Maine light affecting water and form are of primary interest to artist Suzanne Savage Brewer. A Maine native, Suzanne draws from a life of living within her muse. Standing at her easel, she connects to the energy of each location bringing forth that quality which makes each place unique.
Suzanne takes extended trips to areas she wants to paint in order to dig down to the essence of each location. Two places of strong inspiration are the Katahdin Region in and around Baxter State Park and Vinalhaven Island. In addition to studio work, she enjoys painting “en plein air” year round. It is the intense experience of being on location working in the elements that brings authenticity and energy to her work.
In 2012, Suzanne was awarded Baxter State Park’s Visiting Artist Residency. She participates in several plein air events each year and in 2014 received an honorable mention award at the Castine Plein Air Festival. Her work has been shown in group and solo shows in Maine galleries and is in collections across the US.
