MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY —— The Golden Era of MasonCity girls basketball is upon us.

Before Jadda Buckley and Co. burst on tothe scene, the Mohawks were a team in transi-tion.

There had been good teams and good play-ers, even Division-I players at times, but therehad never been a run of success quite like this.

The goal was always to make the state tour-nament.

The state tournament is almost expectedthis time around for the second-ranked (5A)Mohawks. And that comes from the players.

Buckley, a top-50 player nationally who hassigned with Iowa State, is as modest as theycome.

Her future coach at Iowa State, Bill Fennel-ly, said she could be a 30-point-per-gamescorer. Her average last year was about halfthat.

But stats don’t matter to Buckley. Theynever have. They never will. The same goes forthe rest of the team.

The Mohawks are about one thing this year:Winning the state tournament.

“I’m not going to lie. I’ve thought about it.It’s like, ‘What are you going to do when youget that title?’” Buckley said.

OOnnee ooff tthhee mmoosstt vviivviidd mmeemmoorriieess ffoorr MMaassoonnCCiittyy ccooaacchh CCuurrtt KKllaaaahhsseenn of this group of kidscame around the seventh grade.

“I remember they would play 3 on 3 atRoosevelt and they would beat the boys,”Klaahsen said. “That kind of filtered back, and we knew this was going to be a prettygood group.”

They’ve been beating just about anyone intheir path in their high school years, too.

But it’s two early departures at the statetournament that still gnaw at them.

Last year it was a buzzer-beating loss to aWaukee team that shot 93 percent in the sec-ond half that knocked Mason City from thestate tournament in the first round.

“Those last 10 seconds still haunt me,”

senior Morgan Vorba said.“All you can do is learn from it,” Buckley

added. The learning curve isn’t very steep for a

group steeped with experience. On paper, Mason City has a lot to like.• The point guard: Buckley, a 5-foot-8

senior, is widely regarded as one of the bestplayers in the state.

• The shooter: Myah Mellman, a 5-foot-7junior who is a Creighton verbal commit, isthe long-range bomber who can stretch thedefense.

• The toughness: Cortni Rush, a NIACCcommit, is nicknamed “Crush.” It fits her styleof play where she fights for rebounds and candefend the post.

• The defenders: Buckley may be as good ofon-ball defender as there is in the state. Vorbais in the same mold on the Mohawks’ full-court press.

• The role players: Klaahsen thinks thatNicolle Hewett and Allison Scott are two of

the players who will elevate their play this sea-son.

• A freshman scorer: Makenzie Meyer, a 5-9- freshman guard, led the team in scoring inTuesday’s 75-13 win vs. Forest City.

So what don’t the Mohawks have? The easy answer is height.“We can make up for that with effort,”

Buckley said.WWiitthh tthhee iinnccrreeaasseedd eexxppeeccttaattiioonnss comes

more recognition and the potential for mar-quee games.

On Saturday, Mason City will play Kennedy(Minn.) in Hopkins, Minn.

Kennedy is one of the powerhouse big-school programs in Minnesota.

Three days later, the second-rankedMohawks travel to top-ranked (4A) SoutheastPolk.

A team coming off a 21-3 season and its firstconference title wanted to test itself.

“We are going to be challenged in everyway,” Klaahsen said.

That’s by design.Mason City wants to be battle-tested come

tournament time. This group has done things that nobody in

school history has done before. They have the memories from their days

playing for the Hoopsters in elementaryschool.

“It was those 40-1 games,” Buckley joked. And playing unselfish basketball since has

lifted the Mohawks to uncharted territory.“They put in a tremendous amount of time

and buy into the team concept,” Klaahsensaid. “They don’t care about stats. It’s neverbeen about how many points somebodyscores. It’s about winning. They do whateverit takes.”

That’s a mindset that is dispersed through-out a team has some unfinished business.

“I don’t think we sit here and think we haveall this pressure,” Buckley said. “We just playour game like we know we can.”

CCLLEEAARR LLAAKKEE —— With the loss ofonly one player from last season’steam that finished 14-9 overalland 12-6 in the North CentralConference, second-year ClearLake girls basketball coach BartSmith has high expectations forhis team this season.

“I am anticipating our girls to bevery competitive this year,” hesaid. “With everyone returningminus one from our team last year, this year’s team will already havesome team chemistry and experi-ence built in. If we can have amindset on improving every day asa team in our practices and games, then we should be a very toughteam by the end of the year.”

Clear Lake’s only loss was MegMonson, who led the Lions inscoring with a 12.7 per game aver-age, but there’s plenty of talent atSmith’s disposal, led by juniorguard Logan Anderson.

Anderson averaged 9.5 pointsper game last season and is joinedby three players who averaged atleast five points per game last sea-son in junior forward Trudy Peter-son (8.1), senior point guardMegan Loux (7.8) and senior guardKristen Hewett (5.5).

The Lions also return MadiFaber, Kaitlyn Pitzen, Bailey Kibs-gaard, Jenna Peterson and EmilyWillms.

While Clear Lake has strength inreturning numbers, Smith said histeam’s biggest strengths are ath-leticism and guards.

“We have a lot of experiencethere with good shooting, decisionmakers and ball handlers,” Smithsaid. “Athletically, we have for-wards that will be able to run thefloor and get out and defend ouropponent.

“Our best offense will be ourdefense. If we can get steals withour pressure, we will be a toughteam to beat.”

While Smith is hoping to get outand run, he has concerns about histeam’s size and how the Lions will

match up against teams with astrong frontcourt.

“Our weakness is our size,”Smith said. “Our team lacks aninside game. We have a lot of for-wards on the team that run thefloor and finish but our team lacks

a true post. We will struggleagainst teams that have a strongpost presence and height. For us tobe a really dominant team, weneed some of our forwards to gen-erate some points in the paint.”

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY —— The Newman Catholic girlsbasketball team has enjoyed a lot of success undercoach Mike Schutt.

The Knights have reached the regional semifinalsin each of the past five seasons and Schutt saidthat’s the goal again this season despite his teambeing very inexperienced.

“We have that goal again,” the coach said. “Wealways try to get as far as we can and I think we havea reasonable chance.”

For the Knights to succeed, they’ll need to replacetheir top four scorers — three of whom were lost tograduation in addition to junior Hannah Fischer, who is out for the year with an injury.

“We lost a lot of scoring and we have a few girlsthat are hurt to begin this year,” Schutt said.“Hopefully when we get girls back we’ll get towhere we want to be. Our focus is on getting bettereach half we play.”

Leading the list of returnees for Newman areseniors Michaela Schilling, Micah Chavez andMegan Quam.

The Knights also have a handful of juniors whilethe rest of the team is made up of sophomores andfreshmen, many of whom Schutt is planning onusing with his deep rotation.

“We’ll be young with a lot of girls adjusting toplaying varsity basketball,” Schutt said. “I like toplay 10 girls and we have some freshmen in the top10. We’ll have to learn to live with their mistakes butwe hope they’re playing at the level we want themto be at in January.”

Jessica Balek, Sam Grant and Shanda Borchardtaccounted for 36.3 points per game for Newmanand Schutt is concerned where his scoring is goingto come from.

“There’s a little bit of worry about where we’ll getour scoring from,” he said. “We hope that we canget points by creating turnovers.”

Schutt said his team’s strength will be quickness, and he’ll need those transition points as the Knightslack height.

“We’re a lot smaller than in the past,” Schuttsaid. “We’ll have good ball handling, we’re quickand we’ll have to shoot well from outside.”

Schutt is hoping that translates into success inwhat he believes is a wide open conference race thisseason.

“The conference is as wide open as it’s been inyears,” Schutt said. “There’s no clear-cut favoritelike the past several years with West Hancock and itwill come down to the team that is able to get themost out of their young kids.”

GGlloobbee GGaazzeettttee ffiillee pphhoottoo

Clear Lake’s Madi Faber.

The battle for upper-division spots inNorth Central Conference girls basket-ball should be pretty spirited this winter.

St. Edmond was the class of theleague last season, finishing with a 20-2overall mark.

The Gaels should be strong again, butAlgona, which finished second in con-ference play, returns three starters andeight total letterwinners.

The Bulldogs bring their guard courtback intact with Paige Yi and TangyWiseman set to start.

The tandem averaged nearly 16 points, six assists and five steals per game lastseason.

If Algona can get up and down thecourt efficiently, the Bulldogs shouldmake a strong challenge for the top spot.

Hampton-Dumont also looks poisedto move into the upper echelon of con-ference play.

The Bulldogs return forward Taryn

Barz for her senior season.Barz averaged a double-double at

more than 16 points and 10 rebounds pergame.

Paige Wragge also return after asophomore season that saw her leadHampton-Dumont in rebounding atmore than 11 per game while scoring 5.5per contest.

If Barz and Wragge can take care ofbusiness in the front court and get somehelp from the guard court, Hampton-Dumont could also move up the ladder.

Bishop Garrigan, which finishedfourth in the conference in 2011-12,returns just four letterwinners, but theGolden Bears usually find a way to becompetitive in the end.

Chelsi Lanus, a senior forward, is thetop returning starter, although she willreceive plenty of help from TaylorHovey, Aubrie Mayers and HaleyFroelich.

NEWMAN CATHOLIC GIRLS

Knights need tofind scoring

Several times over the pastdecade, North Butler has beena tremendous factor in decid-ing the Corn Bowl Conferencegirls basketball title.

This season should not beany different as veteranBearcats coach Kevin Clipper-ton returns a solid nucleus froma 21-2 squad.

The frightening part for therest of the conference is that, despite solid senior leadershipin the form of Nikki Boomgar-den and Andrea Schrage, thebulk of the North Butler rosteris in the form of a strong juniorclass.

Marisa Speedy, KenzieSiemens, Lisa Feldman, EmilyDolan and Channing Wunsch allsaw significant court time in2011-12 and should onlyimprove.

The main challenger for theBearcats the past two seasonshas been West Fork.

While the Warhawks finished12-2 in league play and 18-5overall last year and returnseven letterwinners, West Forkwill be undergoing some transi-tion as Rodney Huber takesover on the sideline.

Huber, a former Venturaprep, will look to take advan-tage of a strong backcourt thatfeatures senior guard MattieSiefken.

Molly Dhondt will have anexpanded role in the frontcourt, but Huber expects West Fork totake advantage of its backcourtspeed.

Central Springs returns fiveletterwinners from a seasonago and looks to get a full sea-son from Taylor Richardson, who missed most of her junioryear due to an injury.

Nicole Young and Lexi Korteshould form a solid back court, especially if Young is not side-lined for any length of time fol-lowing an early wrist injury.

Northwood-Kensett alsoreturns five letterwinners, including Maren Davidson andSavannah Lira.

With a senior-dominatedroster, the Vikings may be

poised to challenge for anupper-division finish.

St. Ansgar may be the sur-prise team of the year.

Randy Ehlke returns for hisfourth season at the helm andwelcomes back 10 letterwin-ners from a season ago.

The Saints depth shouldhelp it be one of the betterdefensive teams in the league.

Nashua-Plainfield won justthree games a year ago, but theHuskies should also beimproved as they return sevenletterwinners, including threestarters.

Miranda Wagner will providethe senior leadership, butdespite their youth, many of theHuskies have quite a bit of var-sity experience.

Riceville won one game a

season ago, but the Wildcatsalso have quite a bit of experi-ence returning.

One sticking point forRiceville will be the availabilityof Grace Harken, who would bethe team’s leading returningscorer at nearly 11 points pergame.

Harken has missed much ofthe preseason due to injury.

Lauren Jensen will be calledon for a greater role and to helpprovide leadership for the ninesophomores and freshmen whomay contribute.

By BLAKE [email protected] LLAAKKEE – One

year removed from a sub-state loss to Waverly-ShellRock, the Clear Lake boysbasketball team is lookingfor another shot at makingthe state basketball tour-nament.

However, it will have todo it without its leadingscorer from last season,Ozzie Adams, who aver-aged 19.2 points per game.

The Lions will look forsomeone else to be thescorer and right now it isunclear who that may be,but it’s not a bad thing.

“I don’t think there’sgoing to be any one personwho’s going to pick up thatslack,” said coach KevinKahler. “We’re probablygoing to play 10 kids on aregular basis, so I think it’sgoing to be a group effort.”

Junior Spencer David-son is the Lions’ leadingreturning scoring. David-son averaged nine points agame last season.

Davidson,along withseniorsBrysonHamiltonand GavinSheakley,give theLions someexperience

to rely on, but it won’t bejust them doing all thework.

One of Clear Lake’sbiggest strengths enteringthe season could be itsdepth in the backcourt.

“We have six guardswho can all score,” saidSheakley.

That will be a big changefor both the Lions andopposing defenses. TheLions have the potential tohave multiple go-to guysin the fourth quarter anddefenses will not be able tokey in on one guy.

“That’s going to behuge,” Sheakley said.“Anybody could take thelast shot or anybody couldmake a play.”

This also adds a lot ofquestion marks for the Lionsas to how the season will go,but fortunately, teams withinthe conference have thesame problems.

“The conference lost alot of senior talent fromlast year,” Kahler said.“Every team got hit hardwith graduation so it’spretty wide open.”

Other keys to the Lions’success this season will betheir team defense andrebounding. Kahler saidboth will need to improve, though, for the Lions tokeep the conference raceclose.

Should everything cometogether, the Lions have agood shot at some post-season success and that’ssomething the Clear Lakeplayers would love to have.

“We’ve been playingpretty good these past fewyears, so we need to keepbuilding off that, keepplaying good all the waythrough and finish strong,”said Hamilton.

By BLAKE [email protected]

BBRRIITTTT – A state qualifier a seasonago, the West Hancock girls basketballteam hopes it has all the pieces inplace to equal that this season.

“I think we have a great group ofgirls. and if they get experience we’llbe fine,” said coach Paul Sonius.

The Eagles return their top twoscorers from last season. Senior KellieSchmit averaged 15 points per gamelast season and senior Anna Mallenhad 14.5 per game. This season,Sonius is hoping for a little more.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if theyboth average around 20 a game,”Sonius said.

Mallen tore her ACL in the summer, but Sonius said her rehab is comingalong and she should be good to goshortly. Once she returns, West Han-cock has everything it needs to pick upwhere it left off.

For the time being, the Eagles arelooking for consistency in a couplefacets of the game.

In their first game of the season onNov. 26, the Eagles struggled a bit ondefense. In the end though, they cameaway with a 64-60 win over EagleGrove.

West Hancock entered the fourth

quarter down 12 points,but came back due toSchmit’s career-high 29points.

No. 7 (2A) West Han-cock lost later in theweek to Northwood-Kensett, 65-55.

Sonius predicts thedefense will come alongas the girls get used toplaying with each otheragain. He also said theteam needs to find someguard play.

“If they can makestrides and we havethings go our way, wewill be successful,”

Sonius said. Many of the players seeing time on

the court this season played behindnine seniors that graduated in May.

Sonius has confidence they will befine in a couple games and with thatwill come better play on defense.

The offense, on the other hand, isn’t a concern.

“We might have to try to outscoreteams until our defense catches up,”Sonius said. “Once it does catch up,this could be a very good team at theend of season.”

Charles City boys basket-ball team was unable tocollect a win in the North-east Iowa Conference lastseason, finishing 0-12 inconference play and 4-18overall.

Three Comets are gonefrom that team, includingthird-team all-state selec-tion Jonathan Blumberg, but five letterwinnersreturn.

“The challenge of thisteam will be to grow game-by-game throughout theentire season,” CharlesCity coach Todd Forsythsaid.

Blumberg led the team,

averaging 20.9 points and9.9 rebounds per game lastseason. He also led theteam with 66 assists and47 steals.

Forsyth is hoping hisfive letterwinners —seniors Jeff Rutherford andTrey Forsyth and sopho-mores Caleb Hageman,Brian Foster and LeviBlaine — can make up forthe production lost tograduation.

That will mean improv-ing on their scoring aver-age as the five returningletterwinners combined toaverage 27.6 points pergame last season, led byHageman’s 11 per gameaverage.

Mason City High’s Kyle Weiss.

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY —— On most mornings in November andDecember, the sun has yet to rise, but parking in closeproximity to the John Adams swimming pool is some-what scarce.

Mason City boys swimming coach Steve Hugo is allabout improvement in times, and as a former all-stateperformer and a coach who is in his 27th season, Hugoknows about the hard work that it takes.

While his 2012-13 edition of the Mohawks is alreadyputting in the time, Hugo knows that there is a lot ofwork to do.

“It will be the first season since 1965 that there is nota returning state meet qualifier,” Hugo said. “Our focuswill be on improving times in meets and practice.”

Patrick Rowe may be the best bet to make an appear-ance in the state meet this season.

Rowe, a junior who specializes in the backstroke andfreestyle, narrowly missed a spot in last season’s statemeet.

Tony Reisen and Tyler Tweeten, a pair of senior let-terwinners, will figure in the freestyle events, and Reisenwill combine with junior Kyle Weiss to provide a solidcombination in the butterfly.

Forrest Berg and Trevor Brunsvold, both juniors, alsoreturn and should provide depth in the freestyle events.

Depth will not be a strength for the Mohawks, butHugo will still develop some younger names who willcontribute later in the campaign.

Mohawks look to getswimmers to state

By JEREMY [email protected] CCIITTYY ——

Despite the loss of twostrong bowlers in CodyBrandau and Evan Stalkerto graduation, Mason Cityboys bowling coachStephen Chuck has highexpectations for this year’steam.

“It’s pretty tough losingguys like Cody and Evanbut I feel if we can get a200 average per personthis year we have a realgood chance at making thestate tournament,” Chucksaid.

Chuck’s reasoning isn’ttoo far-fetched as theMohawks return fivebowlers — Colton Payne,Cody Siefken, Colin Hub-bard, Blake Forthmann andScott Radcliff — that have190 or higher averages.

Radcliff leads the groupwith a 225 average, Forth-mann averages between212 and 214 while Payneaverages around 210.

“We have five reallygood bowlers and we’llneed one other guy to stepup into that sixth spot,”Chuck said.

That sixth spot is up forgrabs, but Chuck said he ishoping that junior ShawnEllman will fill that role, especially with Radcliffsidelined for the beginningof the season.

“He averages around 170and he’s been bowling veryconsistent,” the coachsaid. “He seems to bowlbetter under pressure.”

Meanwhile, Payne wasvoted captain by his team-mates.

“He’s very mature andeveryone listens to him,”Chuck said. “He’s a greatbowler and he’ll speak upand help out in the pit.”

While Payne is theundisputed leader for theMason City boys, the samecould be said about Rebec-ca Broermann for the girls.

Broermann, a junior, iscapable of bowling a 400series for MarilynSchachel’s Mohawks.

Behind Broermann inthe varsity lineup areseniors Mariah Payne andBrooke Shoafstall andsophomores Emma Arickx,Morgan Krein and KarissaSchott.

NCC will be tightbattle again

The North Central Confer-ence had three teams win atleast 20 games in boys basket-ball last season, and it is notunreasonable to expect thattype of success again this sea-son.

Iowa Falls-Alden, which fea-tures 6-foot-8 junior CaseySchlatter, is certainly one of thepreseason favorites after a 21-3campaign in 2011-12, but anumber of quality teams will befighting for that top spot.

St. Edmond, which qualifiedfor the Class 2A state tourna-ment last season, returns DavidFlattery to spearhead a poten-tial return to Des Moines.

Bishop Garrigan managed awinning record of 13-11 last sea-son despite playing much of itsschedule against largerschools.

John Burns averaged 16points and eight rebounds agame for the Golden Bears, but

he is the only returning starter.Nathan Krieps should fill one

of the guard slots after averag-ing five points and three assistsin a reserve role.

Adam Hamilton also sawquite a bit of court time for Gar-rigan in 2011-12.

Algona returns four letter-winners, including 6-2 forwardSawyer Frideres.

Frideres will likely be thefocal point of the Bulldogoffense after averaging nearly10 points, four rebounds andtwo assists per game.

The Bulldogs should havesome strength along the frontline with five players on theeroster between 6-3 and 6-5, buttheir success will hinge on thedevelopment of a solid guardcorps.

Hampton-Dumont struggledto a four-win season last year.

Despite four seniors who let-tered last year, the Bulldogs willbe quite young with severalsophomores factoring into therotation.

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY – Coming intothe season, the Mason City boysbasketball team has a lot of questionmarks.

The Mohawks lost their top threescorers, Sam Skogen (19.9 ppg), A.J.Rier (12.8 ppg) and Jack Esser (8.6ppg), but Mason City isn’t all thatworried about filling the void.

“We’ll replace (that scoring) justby playing together and doing thelittle things right by making goodpasses and not trying to do anythingthat’s out of our capabilities,” saidsenior captain Jason Kay. “I’d ratherhave our whole starting five score 10points a game than have one guyscore 40.”

Mason City’s leading returningscorer is junior captain Jared Lich-man, who averaged 4.1 points pergame a season ago.

This season, the Mohawks willrely heavily on their perimeter play, with a focus on ball movement toobtain scoring opportunities.

Not boasting much size under-neath the basket, coach AdamCallanan said guard play will be theteam’s strength this season.

“We have a lot of depth at the oneand two positions,” Callanan said.“They’re athletic kids who movereally well.”

Size will be an issue, though, forMason City.

Seniors Kay, listed at 6-foot-3,and J.T. Rottinghaus, 6-foot-4, will

get most of the min-utes for theMohawks down low.

“Jason came offthe bench for us lastyear and really had anice season, butwe’re going to lookto him to step up thisyear,” Callanan said.

Kay and Rotting-haus were namedcaptains for this sea-son and the team islooking to them forsome scoring help tokeep the Mohawkscompetitive.

“Both Jason andJT have embraced

that role, and I think they’re reallylooking forward to stepping up theirgame.”

Mason City will also look tofreshman Wyatt Cooper to give theMohawks some good minutes andanother scoring threat.

Other key players who Callananpointed out were senior guardAndrew Sloan, junior Matt Meyerand sophomore Austin Hemmen, each of whom will be called upon tocontribute.

Meyer scored 35 points in theMohawks’ season-opening win overForest City on Tuesday.

Mason City enters this seasonwith a very young roster, with only ahandful of players with previousvarsity experience. The youth,

Callanan said, will put moreemphasis on protecting the ball inorder for the Mohawks to be suc-cessful.

“It’s going to come down to howwell we take care of the basketball,”Callanan said. “We’re not a talentedenough team where we can turn itover 15-20 times and still beat peo-ple.”

In preparation, the Mohawks havebeen focusing hard on ball move-ment and finding the open guy.

“We’ve talked about trusting thepass and making that extra pass tofind a better shot,” Callanan said.

Over the off-season, Mason Cityworked hard on getting playersaccustomed to each other’s playstyle. As practice got under way, senior co-captain Rottinghaus sawthe team beginning to come togeth-er.

“We’ve looked good in scrim-mages and practices,” Rottinghaussaid. “We’re very hard working anddefense-orientated, and hopefullythat carries over to games.”

The Mohawks finished last sea-son with a record of 6-16, 2-8 inconference.

This season will be just as chal-lenging, but the Mohawks remainconfident success is just around thecorner.

“We have a good group of 11 guysthat are willing to work hard, sharethe basketball, and we have a posi-tive outlook on the season,” Rot-tinghaus said.

Back4RedemptionBy BLAKE SCHULTZ

[email protected]–It was a heart-

breaking season a year ago for theWest Fork boys basketball team.Ranked in the top 10 in Class 2A forall of the season, the team hadanother state tournament berthwithin its reach only to fall secondsshort in the substate final againstRoland-Story.

This season, the Warhawks areout to avenge that loss and get backto the place where they won thestate title two season ago.

“We’re pretty optimistic aboutthis year,” said coach Frank Sch-noes. “The kids that are back fromlast year are using (that loss) asgood motivation. They all thoughtthey should have gone (to state).”

Warhawk fans will see a familiarface on the bench this season. Sch-noes took over as head coach inreplacement of Jordan Nelson. Sch-noes, who was inducted into theIowa High School Athletic Associa-

tion hall of fame in2008, coached atSCMT until 2004.

Schnoes inherits avery good West Forkteam that finished22-2 a year ago. Withthat also comes oneof the State’s top

players in senior Payton Plagge.Plagge was the centerpiece of the

Warhawks a season ago averaging17.7 and 11.1 rebounds per game.

“He’s a great inside presence anda tough matchup,” Schnoes said.“We will count on him to do a lot ofscoring.”

Plagge, who signed to play bas-ketball next season at St. CloudState, has 956 career points, 644rebounds, 131 assists, 120 blocksand 98 steals.

Aside from Plagge, the Warhawkswill look to a number of other play-ers to keep the West Fork confer-ence win streak of 56 games intact.

Schnoes pointed tojunior forward SamAmsbaugh to get a lotof touches insidewith defenses focus-ing on Plagge.

Junior guardSpencer Halloran isanother play Schnoes

pointed out to carry some of theload for the Warhawks.

Halloran averaged 7.4 points pergame a season ago.

Others Schnoes is counting oninclude: seniors Kyle Parcher andRyan Smit, junior Hunter Myersand sophomore Evan Sprung, whoSchnoes says is being groomed asPlagge’s replacement.

West Fork has high hopes of win-ning its fifth straight CornbowlConference title since becoming aschool in 2009, but above all, mak-ing the trip back to Wells FargoArena in Des Moines.

BBUUFFFFAALLOO CCEENNTTEERR —— With allfive starters returning from a statetournament team last season, theNorth Iowa boys basketball team ishoping for an encore performancethis season.

The Bison, who finished 23-3overall and 13-1 in the North IowaConference, will have the target ontheir backs this season.

“What I said to the guys is we have21 games where everyone is going tobe gunning for us,” fourth-year headcoach Chad Hinders said. “We knowthe expectations are there, we knowthat the community thinks weshould win the conference and getback to state with everybody backbut I keep reminding the guys thatwe have to take things one game at atime and that it’s not a sprint, it’s amarathon.”

The Bison had three players aver-age in double figures last season, ledby Troy Kettwick, who averaged 13.9points per game.

Kory Hobbs (11.7) and Eric Krull(11.5) also averaged in double figuresscoring.

However, Hinders said he hasconfidence in all five players he hason the court to put the ball in thebasket.

“We have a team where our oppo-nents can’t focus on one or two peo-

ple,” Hinders said. “It’s nice that wedon’t have a team where it’s all on afew players’ shoulders. We have trustin other people.”

That list includes Mark Milbrandt,Tate Corporon, Jordan Anderson,Derek Yegge, Frank Campos andDylan Voortmann in addition to Ket-twick, Hobbs and Krull.

And with a majority of the teamback, Hinders likes his team’s depth, which will be tested early with play-ers nursing injuries.

“I like the depth that we have,” thecoach said. “We have confidence andwe haven’t changed very much.

“Everybody is on the same pageand both offensively and defensivelywe know what works and what does-

n’t work. We know they’ll be somegames where we have to tweak somethings.”

That’s to be expected in a ruggedNIC, where nothing is guaranteed.

Last season, the Bison had nineconference games decided by 10points or less and Hinders expectsmore of the same this season in abalanced NIC.

“Any given night we know thatthere’s teams in our conference thatcan knock any team off,” Hinderssaid. “I’m worried about all of them.Top to bottom, the conference iswide open.

“We were pretty lucky last year inclose games and we still need to workon managing the game better.”

North Iowa Bison ready for moreFive starters returnfrom Class 1A statetournament team

The North Central Con-ference had three teamswin at least 20 games inboys basketball last sea-son, and it is not unrea-sonable to expect that typeof success again this sea-son.

Iowa Falls-Alden, whichfeatures 6-foot-8 juniorCasey Schlatter, is certain-ly one of the preseasonfavorites after a 21-3 cam-paign in 2011-12, but anumber of quality teamswill be fighting for that topspot.

St. Edmond, whichqualified for the Class 2Astate tournament last sea-son, returns David Flatteryto spearhead a potentialreturn to Des Moines.

Bishop Garrigan man-aged a winning record of13-11 last season despiteplaying much of its sched-ule against larger schools.

John Burns averaged 16points and eight reboundsa game for the GoldenBears, but he is the onlyreturning starter.

Nathan Krieps should

fill one of the guard slotsafter averaging five pointsand three assists in areserve role.

Adam Hamilton alsosaw quite a bit of courttime for Garrigan in 2011-12.

Algona returns four let-terwinners, including 6-2forward Sawyer Frideres.

Frideres will likely bethe focal point of the Bull-dog offense after averagingnearly 10 points, fourrebounds and two assistsper game.

The Bulldogs shouldhave some strength alongthe front line with fiveplayers on thee rosterbetween 6-3 and 6-5, buttheir success will hinge onthe development of a solidguard corps.

Hampton-Dumontstruggled to a four-winseason last year.

Despite four seniors wholettered last year, the Bull-dogs will be quite youngwith several sophomoresfactoring into the rotation.

NEWMAN CATHOLIC KNIGHTS • boys basketball

By BLAKE [email protected]

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY – The NewmanCatholic boys basketball team comesinto the 2012-13 season with highhopes.

The Knights, who finished 13-10 aseason ago, return their top twoscorers along with a wealth of expe-rience.

“I’m excited about the upcomingseason,” said coach Randy Fischels.“We have some talented kids return-ing and it helps to have that experi-ence back.”

Seniors AJ Kehm and Casey Hallled the Knights in scoring last seasonaveraging 12.3 and 11.5 points pergame respectively. This season, Fis-chels believes both will play a hugerole in the team’s success.

“Casey’s a pretty good perimeterplayer,” Fischels said. “He also cantake the ball to the basket and get tothe free throw line.”

Kehm provides the Knights with apresence underneath the basket. Heled the Knights last season making114 field goals, most of which camewithin five feet of the basket. LikeHall, Kehm’s ability to draw fouls willbe important.

Getting to the line more is some-thing Fischels is emphasizing thisyear. He believes if the team can do

that, the team will beon its way to a suc-cessful season in theNorth Iowa Confer-ence.

Depth across thelineup is another thingFischels is excitedabout. With thatdepth, the Knightswould love to be ableto wear teams down.

“We have five goodperimeter players andfive post players,” Fis-chels said. “Unlessother teams havedepth like we have, weshould be able to (wear

them down).”The NIC won’t be easy this season

with teams like North Iowa and For-rest City, but the Knights look to beright in the mix.

“The NIC will be a very competi-tive, very good league,” Fischels said.“But any given night, anybody couldbeat anybody.”

As the season progresses and theKnights start hitting their stride, theycould be a tough team to beat.

“It’s going to be a fun team and I’mlooking forward to seeing how weimprove throughout the year,” Fis-chels said.

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY —— It wasduring middle schoolwhen Kaz Onoo first

developed the urge to become astate champion.

Then, it was mainly about win-ning an AAU title.

He accomplished that feat hiseighth-grade year.

Now, two trips to state in hisback pocket, it’s about winning amore prestigious title for theMason City High junior.

“I just want to go out everymatch, fight hard and give it all Igot,” Onoo said.

A qualifier his freshman yearand fourth-place finisher lastseason at 106 pounds, Onoo is setto bump up a weight for the firsttime in his prep career.

He finished sixth at the presea-son national tournament in CedarFalls and is ranked second in thepreseason poll at 113.

He’s the highest-rankedwrestler for a Mohawk team thatreturns three state qualifiers.

“To be real honest, I can’timagine a much better 13-pounder than Kaz,” Mason Citycoach Dusty Rhodes said. “Hedoes everything he can to get bet-ter in season and outside of sea-son. He seeks out resources to getbetter.”

Onoo is behind Linn-Mar’sMatt Wempen, the Class 3A 113-

poundchamp lastseason, inthe rank-ings.

DuringOnoo’s runat state aseason ago,he was a scoring machine usingthe tilt and was improved on hisfeet. If there was one aspect hestruggled at it was from the bot-tom position.

Rhodes said that’s not an issueanymore.

“From what I’ve seen, I don’tsee that as being an issue,” Rhodessaid.

Onoo, 41-9 a season ago, is oneof the headliners for a Mason Cityteam that finished 21-8 in duals.

It’s a pair of juniors — AndyBartel and Stone Sturges — whomay be poised to take the biggestleap.

Bartel was a state qualifier at132 last season while Sturges tookthird at districts.

Bartel, whose older brother,Jared, won the state title at 189pounds, looks like a different kidphysically.

He added 30 pounds of muscleand will wrestle at 160, where he’sranked fifth in the preseason.

“I can tell a difference,” Bartelsaid. “You can just tell the differ-ence from cutting weight andnot.”

Sturgesstarts theyearrankedsixth at152.Rhodesdoesn’tthink he’ll

finish the year in that slot.“I don’t think there is a ceiling

for Stone,” Rhodes said. “You arenot going to find a much betterathlete at 152 in the state of Iowathan him. If he can figure out away to put it all together there isno ceiling for him.”

What’s been evident early inpractice is just how close Barteland Sturges are on the mat.

“It’s amazing how hard they arepushing each other,” Rhodes said.“There are times we just have tosplit them up to share the wealth.”

Tom Schiffer, a junior, was astate qualifier at 220 pounds andis ranked sixth while Will Slaven,a senior, was a place away fromqualifying at 195.

Schiffer will start the season atheavyweight but will work hisway down to 220.

Mason City finished seventh inClass 3A last season and pro-duced five placewinners.

“We have one of the toughestprograms in the state,” Onoo said.“If everyone works as hard as theycan we can definitely contend.”

MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY —— Fighting injury early in his highschool career, John Waters felt like the one thingthat really suffered was his technique.

It’s fair to say the Newman Catholic senior hasmade strides in that department.

A fifth-place finisher a year ago in Class 1A at 195pounds, Waters, ranked fifth, is the guy for New-man Catholic this year.

In a room with only 14 wrestlers, coach MarkBertsch is conceding competing for wins in someinstances.

Instead, it’s about making progress withwrestlers who are aiming to place high at state, likein Waters’ case, or simple improvement for thosewho are novices to the sport.

“First of all, we are not a dual meet team,”Bertsch said. “We are not worried about the begin-ning of the season.”

It’s all about progress. In Waters’ case it’s about expanding a gas tank

that he feels can elevate him to the next level andcan vault him into state-title contention.

“I just know I have to go all three periods,” hesaid. “You have to give it your all. I was satisfied(with last year) but you can’t get comfortable.”

Waters said he’s comfortable in a wrestling roomwhere practice partners are sparse.

“What we lack in numbers we don’t lack in peo-ple going their hardest,” he said. “Whether it’s guysin their first year or guys like me, you are alwaysteaching yourself.”

Bertsch has plenty of teaching to do.Waters is the lone returning state qualifier.Reed Rognes has been knocking on the door (he

took third the last two years at districts), butbeyond that it is an inexperienced group. Seth Hes-tness is the only other Knight who qualified for dis-tricts.

“If I was only sticking around for winning I’d begone,” Bertsch said. “When I’m done nobody isgoing to pull out a record book and ask you howgood a record you had. It’s about making the kidswe have in the room better.”

CLEAR LAKE LIONS • wrestling

By JARED [email protected]

CCLLEEAARR LLAAKKEE —— Andres Gon-zalez has a mini weightroom set up in his bedroom,

fit with dumb bells, a large mirrorand posters.

It’s a constant reminder of whatit takes to get to the top.

Gonzalez is no stranger to com-peting for state titles.

At Mason City High his first twoyears, he finished fourth and third.

Now at Clear Lake, he admitsit’s state title or bust.

“That’s all I want to do is winstate my next two years,” he said.“There should be nothing less.”

For Clear Lake coach GaryWeber, it’s evident Gonzalez hasthe tools to do that.

“He’s as good as any statechamp we’ve had in the room,”Weber said.

That’s lofty praise from some-one who coached two-time statechamp Joe Colon, now a nationaltitle contender at Northern Iowa.

Clear Lake was a 7-13 team aseason ago. It was the first losingrecord in 20 years.

Having Gonzalez, a bonus-point machine in most duals, issure to help that.

Clear Lake doesn’t have areturning state qualifier on its ros-ter.

But when you throw in Gonza-lez, 41-2 a year ago, you have a126-pounder who is expecting notonly to make it to state but becomethe Lions’ first state champ sinceJacob Colon in 2011.

Gonzalez admits it’s still a bit

odd wrestling for Weber, a coachwho is known for his eccentricpersonality.

“I didn’t know what to thinkabout him when I was younger,”Gonzalez said. “I didn’t not likehim, but he was the Clear Lakecoach. Everybody wanted to beathim ... You know how he is.”

But in the room, the two haveearned each other’s respect.

“I didn’t realize he was quite sostrong,” Weber said. “And he’s sotechnical and he has the workethic.”

Weber wants that to trickledown throughout a lineup thatwas very inexperienced a seasonago.

“We have to compete harder,”

Weber said. “When they get onthe mat they have to get a littlenastier.”

Ryan Schmalen (106) and BriceWilcke (170) were the winningestwrestlers on the Clear Lake rostera season ago. Each won 24 match-es. Schmalen was a third-placefinisher at districts.

“We have a lot of kids who havepotential and can make it to state,”Wilcke said. “It’s up to them howhard they work in the room.”

That’s something that Gonzalezknows is the key.

“It’s all mental,” he said.“Everybody knows that if youaren’t pushing yourself that youare holding yourself back.”

CORN BOWL CONFERENCE • wrestling

By JARED [email protected]

MMAANNLLYY —— There have been nights where theclock hits midnight and Kyle White still can’t sleep.

The remedy for that is to get up and go for a runaround town.

For White, a year after wrestling for a state title,it’s about replicating that feat.

“He’s driven. He’s so driven,” Central Springscoach Jay McDonough said.

The drive to Wells Fargo Arena has some newturns for the Panthers this season.

Central Springs moved from Class 1A to 2A.Where the Panthers are strong, so are teams in

their sectional like Osage and Clear Lake. Then you throw in Charles City once districts roll

around and just getting bodies to state will be a talltask.

“That’s a big-time challenge now,” McDonoughsaid.

For White, the challenge will begin at sectionals. He starts the year ranked fifth at 126 pounds, a few

spots behind Clear Lake’s Andres Gonzalez, who willbe in the same sectional.

In all, the Panthers have four ranked wrestlers —Coleman Waters (No. 4 at 106), JD Sliger (No. 9 at113) and Tommy Dalton (No. 7 at 285).

Of the four, only White, who reeled off threestraight wins at state before losing to Albunett’sTyler Shulista in the finals, qualified for state.

“When Andrew (Nodtvedt) won it, that rubbed offon Kyle,” McDonough said. “As Kyle went throughhis run I think that was rubbing off on the others.”

The Panthers, who placed third at the Corn BowlConference meet and 14-6 in duals, are still chasingNashua-Plainfield for conference supremacy.

The Huskies, last season’s Class 1A state dualchamps, lost three state finalists and return just one

qualifier in Cody Marks, the top-ranked 145-pounder in Class 1A.

Marks broke his hand during the state dual tour-nament last season and didn’t wrestle in the tradi-tional state tournament.

“We only have eight returning starters and threeof those had losing records,” N-P coach Al Frostsaid. “This year’s team will be a big wait and see.”

Maybe in the state race that will be true, but N-Pis still the team to beat as it aims for its 11th straightCorn Bowl title.

“They are just too deep,” McDonough said.

On the information sheet Osage wrestling coachBrent Jennings filled out there is a section thatasks what a team is looking for in its upcomingseason.

The answer by Jennings was short and to thepoint.

“State titles,” it read. And that’s where the focus lies for an Osage

wrestling team loaded in the lower weights andcoming off a 26-4 season.

Osage returns North Iowa Conference champi-ons at each weight from 106 to 138.

They return a pair of state place winners —Brady Jennings and Doug Perrin each finishedsixth a season ago — and with a host of returneesdown low and some impact freshmen in the mix, competition for spots in the lineup has been fierce.

“We will have some dogfights in our room withguys just trying to find a spot,” Jennings said.

Perhaps the lone question is how Osage will fillin weights toward the top.

But the question about who is the favorite in theNIC begins and ends with Osage until someoneknocks the Green Devils off.

Chris Hanke, Jennings, Thatcher Goodale, Per-rin, Christian Fox and Colin Barker all return asconference champs. So does Bret Jeffries in theupper weights.

“Our numbers are great,” Jennings said. “I justwish we could spread our kids out a little more inorder to create more opportunities for kids.”

West Hancock has the horses at the top with theClark boys (Ryder and Gunner) to go along withNate Aitchison, Kevin Tlach and Chris Schleuger, who starts the year ranked second at heavyweightin Class 1A.

Then you thrown in a Lake Mills team that fin-ished last season 24-6, led by Alex Brandenburg, who has done an excellent job with the program inhis five seasons and you have some depth in theconference.

The dual record was great, but Brandenburgwants more success at the state level this season.

“The standard needs to be set higher this year interms of district qualifiers, state qualifiers, andstate place-winners,” he said.

COVER STORY

FAMILYAFFAIRBy JARED PATTERSON

[email protected]

CCHHAARRLLEESS CCIITTYY —— Jesse Ether-ington has watched the VHStape of his dad, Jason, win his

state wrestling title back in 1983 forAlgona High.

The bracket from his dad’s state-tournament run still sits in the fami-ly’s basement.

Jesse, now a senior at Charles City, has heard the stories.

Jesse knows all about how hisgrandpa, also named Jason and also astate wrestling champ, (1960, Algona)was doing the color commentary onthe radio for his dad’s title match in’83.

“It’s pretty sweet watching him wina state title,” Jesse said.

Wrestlng is more than just a sportto the Etheringtons.

Sure, it’s two generations of statechamps, but it goes beyond that.

The Etherington clan has four kidsin high school at Charles City — onein every grade.

Jesse, a two-time placewinner, isthe eldest of the group.

Johnny, a state qualifier as a fresh-man, is sandwiched between a pair ofsisters — Sydney and Shae.

“They say their sport in the winteris wrestling,” Jesse said of his sisters.

CChhaarrlleess CCiittyy wwrreessttlliinngg ccooaacchh DDaavveeWWiilllliiaammss is beginning his 18th year intown.

It was about the same time he tookover he found out that Jason Ether-ington and his wife moved to CharlesCity.

The relationship between Williamsand Etherington dates back to collegewhere Williams got to know the for-mer state champ through a teammate.

“I knew there’d be some wrestlers,”Williams said.

He was right.

JJeessssee ssppeenntt mmoosstt ooff llaasstt sseeaassoonnranked No.1 in Class 2A at 145pounds.

He burst on to the scene as a fresh-man and took fourth at state before heshockingly missed out on state as asophomore.

“My sophomore year the pressuregot to me,” he admits. “I had to thinkthrough a lot of stuff after that year.”

Not much bothered him last sea-son.

He was on cruise control at thestate tournament entering his semifi-nal match against Denver-Tripoli’sCory Chapin, an unorthadox wrestler,to put it mildly.

Etherington was leading 5-3 in thethird period. A trip to ChampionshipSaturday was within his grasp.

His brother, Johnny, was knockedout of the tournament a day earlierand was watching from the stands.

“I was like, ‘Oh, he’s got this,’”Johnny thought after his brotherscored a takedown.

Then everything changed.Chapin, his funky style on full dis-

play, caught Etherington and record-ed a third-period fall, ending Jesse’sstate-championship bid in stunningfashion.

Jesse laid on the mat and justlooked at the Wells Fargo Arena ceil-ing.

“He came and consoled me after Ilost, so I tried to find him,” Johnnysaid. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to domuch.”

Jesse wrestled back the next morn-ing to place third after he earned apair of decisions the morning afterthat Friday night loss.

Jesse went back and studied thefilm soon after.

At first, it was complete disbelief as

he watched it.Then it turned into a study session. The past was the past. The focus

turned to the future and his seniorseason.

“I had to look at it to see what I didwrong,” Jesse said. “You learn fromyour failures. I had to learn from lasyera.”

JJeessssee hhaass aallwwaayyss bbeeeenn ddeevvootteedd ttoowwrreessttlliinngg, but he feels the urgencythis time around.

He was the quarterback of theCharles City football team his junioryear.

He didn’t play this season. Instead,he focused on improving on the mat.

“In all aspects he’s gotten better,”Williams said.

Part of his improvement is trustingthe voices around him, even the oneshe has blocked out from time to timein the past.

The one voice that has alwaysearned his attention is that of hisgrandpa, who doesn’t miss a matchhis grandsons wrestle in.

He admits he needs to listen to hisdad more.

“My dad knows a lot,” Jesse said.Jesse has gotten wiser over the

years despite dealing with heartacheof the cruelest kind.

The Etheringtons bleed wrestling. For Jesse, this is it.Sure, he’ll likely wrestle in college,

but his senior season is what it’sabout now.

He’s settled in at 152 pounds wherehe’s ranked second in the preseasonrankings in Class 2A.

No matter what happens, he has afamily of wrestlers and wrestling fansbehind him.

“When we lose big matches, likestate, my sisters probably bawledmore than I did,” Jesse said.
