If you are leaving for the summer or are going on a vacation, these are helpful suggestions to protect your home: Secure all loose furniture and other outside items that could become flying missiles in a storm. Lock all doors and windows - Turn off the water to the house - Turn off the circuit breaker for the hot water tank and any other major appliances you will not be using - Do not turn off the breakers for the air or heat system - Set your air to approximately 82/84 This will keep the moisture from doing damage - Open closet and other doors to keep air circulating through the home - Unplug all valuable items that could be damaged during thunderstorms - Turn off the refrigerator, empty the ice maker and shutoff the water to the unit - Block the doors open. If you leave it on, set to a higher temperature to save money - Pour a small amount of bleach in each toilet to keep them clean and cover the toilet seat with a plastic wrap to keep the water from evaporating - Leave dishwasher door ajar and pour a small amount of vegetable oil in the bottom to stop the seals from drying out - Consult your owner’s manual and follow the recommended instructions for shutting down the vehicle for extended periods - Check with your insurance carrier as you can save money by dropping some coverage not needed while the vehicle is not in use - Also, if you are paying for extra services from Spectrum, put these services on vacation. Little Summer Break -TOWN CRIER will be back in October! Sally Kruse, Editor – e-mail: [email protected]

This will be the last issue of the TOWN CRIER until October. Please save this issue – it includes the events from May until September. Some of our residents leave for the summer months, but those of us who stay have a fun summer planned. Please join us at Kaffee Klatch every Wednesday morning 8 – 9 a.m. to find out the latest news on what is happening in Unit 2.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER George Filiau, President, Unit 2 Homeowners Association

(On behalf of your Homeowners Board)

As this is the last Town Crier of the season, I will pass along the most recent events happening in Unit 2. The gate contract for 40th street has been signed and we anticipate it will be operational in late June. Each Unit will be given a date to register their vehicle and receive their Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Each home will receive only one. If you have more than one vehicle and need additional RFID’S, they may be registered and purchased at that time.

Remember that “Hurricane Season” begins June 1st. Make sure you ask if there are any reconnect fees. Most of all, HAVE A RESPONSIBLE PERSON CHECK YOUR HOME TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS OK. We will soon be contacting the Fire Dept. to arrange for some volunteers to take CPR classes. We have purchased AED equipment and it will be installed after the classes have been taken. There are many events being planned for the summer months. They are listed in this newsletter. Any extra events or other important happenings will be communicated via ROBO CALL. Have a great summer!

Jim Schimpf, Clubhouse and Pool Director will be gone for the month of May. All Clubhouse and/or Pool issues should be directed to George Filiau. Jim Schimpf will not be able to address them during this time.

SOCIAL CLUB NEWS CHARLIE HEMEON, PRESIDENT

The Social Club held two successful events in March. The Ice Cream Social was chaired by Barbara Walsh and had 101 people in attendance, up 40 people from last year. Jerry Smith once again put on a sold-out Super Bingo which included lunch and an afternoon of Bingo. The profit from these two events exceeded $1,000. The Social Club Board approved the purchase of a new grill to be used at pool parties and other events around the pool. It has come to the attention of the Board that the Shuffle Board Courts are in bad condition and need to be resurfaced. The Board is working with the HOA on this matter and hope to have the work completed this summer so that we can have leagues in the fall.

Upcoming Events: The following people volunteered to chair the remaining Social Club events for 2019. July 4th – Gail Arsenault Meal & Deal – August 10 – Debbie Smith Octoberfest – October 19 – Gerrie Curry Las Vegas Night – November 16 – Gail Arsenault Golf Cart Parade – December TBA – Charlie Hemeon Residents’ Annual Christmas Dinner – December 14th – Charlie Hemeon New Year’s Eve – Jim & Liz Schimpf

The Board is looking for ideas with regards to raising money for our three charities. If you have any suggestions, please contact Barbara Walsh at (727) 251-9076 or [email protected]. The Board thanks Barbara for Volunteering to work on this project. To those of you who are traveling North this Summer, please travel safely. If you are staying in Mainlands, please enjoy the events that are being held. Wherever you go - enjoy a Great Summer.

KAFFEE KLATCH We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign-up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Millie Cole at (727) 577-6040 at least a week in advance so that she can be prepared.

WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS JANET MEKEEL, PRESIDENT

The Women’s Club would like to thank everyone who has made the first half of 2019 such a success. Our events wouldn’t be as outstanding as they have been without everyone who volunteers. As we disband for the summer months, I want to let you know what your Women’s Club has scheduled for the upcoming months. May 13 – 11:30 a.m. – Membership meeting – The smell of chocolate is in the air. We will have a

chocolatier, Mr. John Prokop, ‘The Chocolate Man’, visit and explain the process of making candy. Hostesses are Peggy Farrington, Peggy Chenel and Cathy Waldauer.

The Memorial Day Picnic will be held on Monday, May 27th. BYOB. Tickets are $10. Chairperson is Peggy Chenel. Peggy Farrington (727) 578-0313 will be selling tickets for this event. Millie Cole will be setting up a memorial table for our military veterans, so please bring your photos to the clubhouse that morning.

June, July and August – Watch the Clubhouse bulletin board for special day trips that Peggy Chenel (727) 667-7754 has put together for us. Since these trips need confirmation of reservation numbers, it is important if you are going, you must sign-up. If you find a change in your schedule, let Peggy know immediately. Also, since we will be carpooling, we will be using the carpool sign-up sheet. This should insure that everyone going has access to a ride. These trips sound like a lot of fun.

September 9 – 11:30 a.m. – Regular membership meeting. September 14 – 5:00 p.m. – Chicken and Biscuit Supper – Gerrie Curry, Chairperson October 1 – Once again the Women’s Club will be collecting new or slightly used stuffed animals.

Please make sure these stuffed animals aren’t stained or appear to have been used. They are also collecting new toys as well this year. These stuffed animals and toys will be donated to the Pinellas Park Fire Administration for their annual toy drive for needy children in our community who have lost theirs in a fire. Let’s see if we can top last year’s number.

October 26 – Annual Charity Card and Game Party *******************************************************************************************

Join the Book Club.

Meeting: First Monday of every month Time: 1:30 p.m. - Location: Unit 2 Clubhouse Date: May 6th, 2019

The first book club was a success. Everyone that attended received a free author-signed copy of Author Don Derkach’s ‘Astrology Murder’. At the May meeting, we will discuss the book and at the end of the meeting we will select a book for the following month. So, come to each meeting having read your book and bring a recommendation for the next month’s book. Together we will decide on the book to read the following month. The book club is a great place for friendship and a good place to expand your thought process. *******************************************************************************************

FAY BURGESON, SECRETARY

HOMEOWNERS BOARD Unit 2 continues to be a popular place to live as it does not take very long for homes to be sold. Wonder what makes Unit 2 so popular? Could it be the great people? The roof replacement policy? Could they have heard how well-managed we are? Maybe the way we work together. Well, whatever it is, we will continue to welcome new neighbors.

Leonard and Carol Bonk moved into the home at 4218 - 100th Avenue last month. Susan Hefte rented the home at 10128 41st St N and decided to buy it. She is an awesome

lady! Suzanne Nusbaum moved into 10174 – 45th Way. We wish her well. Dennis Pond and Gail Thompson will be making 4540 – 100th Avenue home. Frank and Ella Durham are moving into 10031 Mainlands Blvd. Right across the street from

me! Yay! Let’s all make an effort to welcome these folks into our community to fortify their decision to make Unit 2

their home. There will be more move-ins during the Summer. Be sure and welcome them. *******************************************************************************************

Mitzi was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut and was an only child. She was a manager for the Holiday Inn for many years. In 1972 moved to Florida to live with her mother after her step-father passed away. In 1992 she visited friends from Connecticut that lived in Mainlands Unit 1. Mitzi told her mother that this would be a great place for them to live and they bought a house in Unit 2. After retirement, she became very involved with Sacred Heart Church where she is the Head Usher, Eucharistic Minister and also serves the Homebound. She has been a Block Captain for Unit 2 for over twenty years. Mitzi enjoys talking and meeting new neighbors and is willing to help wherever she is needed. Mitzi has made many friends and her greatest joy is helping people. Mitzi tells everyone she meets that Mainlands is a wonderful place to live and they should all consider moving into our neighborhood.

SEVEN LIFE HACKS FOR SENIORS THAT MAKE EVERYDAY LIFE EASIER https://dailycaring.com/7-useful-tips-and-tricks-for-seniors-that-make-everyday-tasks-easier/

1. Reach items in the back of the refrigerator. It can be tough for older adults to reach items in

the back of the refrigerator. To make it easier, add a lazy Susan (turntable) on top of a shelf so they can rotate it to bring what they need to the front.

2. Add raised dot stickers to key phone and remote-control buttons for seniors with macular degeneration or other common eye diseases, add raised button stickers to certain phone buttons and TV remote control buttons to help them know which they need to press. For example, Barbara has macular degeneration so she added bumps to the “Answer,” “2,” and “8” buttons on her phone to make it easier to use. The same could be done for a TV remote control, adding bumps to the “On/Off” and volume buttons make them easier to find.

3. Round out sharp furniture corners to prevent injury. Counters, coffee tables, or nightstands with sharp corners could be an injury waiting to happen. Soften those corners by adding stick-on corner guards or moldable putty that dries into rubber.

4. Use rubber bands to make cups easier to grip. Simple rubber bands can be wrapped around cups and mugs to make them easier for weak, shaky, or arthritic hands to grip. This trick could work for thinner objects like toothbrushes or pens – though foam grips that enlarge the handle may be more comfortable.

5. Keep the straw in place while drinking. If you notice your older adult chasing the straw around their cup when they’re drinking, tape the straw to a clothespin and clip it to the glass. This keeps the straw in place when the cup moves.

6. Prevent soap from falling to the shower floor. Soap is notoriously slippery when wet and could easily slip out of your older adult’s hands and fall to the tub or shower floor. This is a dangerous falling hazard as well as inconvenient. To stop this from happening, get a pair of old pantyhose and cut it in half so you have one leg. Put the bar of soap into the foot and tie the top end to the shower head or a handy grab bar.

7. Organize medications. It’s often easiest to organize medications with simple, low tech tricks. Despite the many medication tracking apps available, many find that a simple calendar stuck to the refrigerator or a printed spreadsheet / log are simple and accurate ways to track when medicine is taken. Pill organizers make sure the correct pills are taken at the right times of day and inexpensive plastic bins or shoe boxes keep medicine bottles organized.

******************************************************************************** The Spring Fling dance held Saturday; April 13th was enjoyed by everyone. We had guests from other Mainland Units as well as outside friends/guests. Music was provided by Al Ruggiero and he kept us dancing all night. This event was possible with the help of our volunteers: Denis Chenel, George/Rachel Filiau, Carolyn Chilton, Peggy Kerrigan, Chris Eichinger, Marge Malone and Jim/Liz Schimpf.
