PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Fay Burgeson, President, Unit 2 Homeowners Association (On behalf of your Homeowners Board)

What a fantastic ‘winter’ we are having! When our family and friends call from ‘Up North’ asking how weather is, I’m sure they are getting tired of our telling them that the weather is beautiful. Faith Burgeson, President, HOA Board January did not bring us any new residents. It is important that we get to know those that have moved into our neighborhoods in the past few months. Now that the holidays are over, if you haven’t had time to visit the new folks, please take the time now. Please reach out to these new residents and make them feel welcome in our “neighborhood”. CLUBHOUSE RESERVATIONS – All Unit 2 Home Owners that wish to book the Clubhouse for an event – must first contact Jill Spanheimer at (727) 422-5916 for approval on the date. There are many Unit 2 and private events planned throughout the year. Jill will enter the date and time of your event to avoid any conflicts of schedule. ***********************************************************************

PINELLAS PARK PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

If you haven’t been attending the shows at the Pinellas Park Performing Arts Center, you might want to look it up to see what’s going on there. Tribute Artists are being featured. The headliner is obviously not the ‘real’ Elvis, but the group that performed his music was spectacular. Really brings back memories and puts the bounce back in your step. In February, they are hosting SHADES OF BUBLÉ, a three-man tribute to Michael Bublé on the 10th and 7 BRIDGES – THE ULTIMATE EAGLES TRIBUTE on the 25th. These two shows are $ 20 at the door and less for advance tickets.

See you there!

Fay Burgeson, President

Kathy was born in Akron, Ohio and lived there for 63 years. She worked at B.F. Goodrich as a statistical clerk for six years and she is still counting. Kathy has two sons - one lives in Texas with two children and the other one lives in Cocoa Beach. Kathy then worked in the local school district for 20 years as a school secretary. She was widowed in 2002. In December of 2006 she moved to Florida and a year later moved to the Mainlands. Kathy is quiet and humble. Many of you may not have met her, but you probably have benefited from her many hours of volunteering. For the last three years, she has volunteered at the Unit 2 Thanksgiving Dinner working tirelessly with Gerri Curry and others to be sure that the Mainlands Family has the traditional dinner. She has been a Unit 2

volunteer Block Captain for the past five years and delivers the TOWN CRIER. Kathy is Co-Manager at the food pantry at Sacred Heart Church and volunteers at Hospice Resale Shop in St. Petersburg. When I asked Kathy if I could put her profile in the TOWN CRIER – she said “Thanks for thinking of me, but I'll bet there is someone more deserving” – I don’t think so. ***********************************************************************

RULES - DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ONE? HELP US HELP ONE ANOTHER KEEP OUR BUDGET DOWN

Some of us have been noticing that our cement is breaking down on our Miami curbs and sidewalks. The weight of cars and trucks parking on top of our curbs and sidewalks in front of our houses is the cause, as well as, large trucks driving over the corners as they cut too close. A study has been done and is being sent to contractors to repair our cement. This is an expensive undertaking. As residents, we can help to keep this expenditure down in the future by asking those that visit us to be sure to park in the street and not on our curbs and sidewalks! Don’t be shy about it – the money that it takes to make the repairs comes out of OUR POCKETS……Fay Burgeson, President - HOA Board

KAFFEE KLATCH

We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044 as far in advance as possible so that he can be prepared.

CRIME PATROL FOR UNIT 2 The crime patrol needs more volunteers. Wouldn’t you like to volunteer? You only have to look and listen – if you see something suspicious – call Pinellas Park Police (727) 541-0758. If you are interested, call Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044. Please help to keep our Unit 2 safe.

STAY OFF OF THE ROOF

All of our roofs are tile and might break if someone walks on them. Also, if you have your trees trimmed, be sure the tree trimmers are aware of where the limbs will fall and make sure the debris does not fall on the roof.

Millions of older adults fall prey to financial scams every year. Use these tips from NCOA and the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement to protect yourself or an older adult you know.

8 TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF

1. Be aware that you are at risk from strangers—and from those closest to you - Over 90% of all reported elder abuse is committed by the older person’s own family members, most often their adult children, followed by grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and others. Common tactics include depleting a joint checking account, promising but not delivering care in exchange for money or property, outright theft, and other forms of abuse, including physical abuse, threats, intimidation, and neglect of basic care needs. Everyone is at risk of financial abuse, even people without high incomes or assets. Understand the top 10 most common scams targeting seniors, so you can spot one before its too late. 2. Don’t isolate yourself—stay involved! Isolation is a huge risk factor for elder abuse. Most family violence only occurs behind closed doors, and elder abuse is no exception. Some older people self-isolate by withdrawing from the larger community. Others are isolated because they lose the ability to drive, see, or walk about on their own. Some seniors fear being victimized by purse snatchings and muggings if they venture out. Visit the Eldercare Locator to find services nearby that can help you stay active. Or contact your local senior center to get involved. 3. Always tell solicitors: “I never buy from (or give to) anyone who calls or visits me unannounced. Send me something in writing.” Don’t buy from an unfamiliar company and always ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer or charity. Neighborhood children you know who are selling Girl Scout cookies or school fundraising items may be an exception, but a good rule of thumb is to never donate if it requires you to write your credit card information on any forms. 4. Shred all receipts with your credit card number - Identity theft is a huge business. To protect yourself, invest in—and use—a paper shredder. Monitor your bank and credit card statements and never give out personal information over the phone to someone who initiates the contact with you. 5. Sign up for the “Do Not Call” list and take yourself off multiple mailing lists Visit Do Not Call to stop telemarketers from contacting you. Be careful with your mail. Do not let incoming mail sit in your mailbox for a long time. When sending out sensitive mail, consider dropping it off at a secure collection box or directly at the post office. You also can regularly monitor your credit ratings and check on any unusual or incorrect information at www.AnnualCreditReport.com. To get more tips on protecting yourself from fraud, visit On Guard Online, which has interactive games to help you be a smarter consumer on issues related to spyware, lottery scams, and other swindles. 6. Use direct deposit for benefit checks to prevent checks from being stolen from the mailbox - Using direct deposit ensures that checks go right into your accounts and are protected. Clever scammers or even scrupulous loved ones have been known to steal benefits checks right out of mailboxes or from seniors’ homes if they are laying around. 7. Never give your credit card, banking, Social Security, Medicare, or other personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call Misuse of Medicare dollars is one of the largest scams involving seniors. Common schemes include billing for services never delivered and selling unneeded devices or services to beneficiaries. Protect your Medicare number as you do your credit card, banking, and Social Security numbers and do not allow anyone else to use it. Be wary of salespeople trying to sell you something they claim will be paid for by Medicare. Review your Medicare statements to be sure you have in fact received the services billed, and report suspicious activities to 1-800-MEDICARE. 8. Always be skeptical of all unsolicited offers and thoroughly do your research - Be an informed consumer. Take the time to call and shop around before making a purchase. Take a friend with you who may offer some perspective to help you make difficult decisions. Also, carefully read all contracts and purchasing agreements before signing and make certain that all of your requirements have been put in writing. Understand all contract cancellation and refund terms. As a general rule governing all of your interactions as a consumer, do not allow yourself to be pressured into making purchases, signing contracts, or committing funds. These decisions are yours and yours alone.
