Tire maintenance

Proper tire care and maintenance procedures

Followingpropertirecareandmaintenanceprocedureswill:Helptoachievethebestpossibletractionandhandlingperformance•Help to maximize the life of your tire•Help to ensure that your vehicle operates safely•Help to improve fuel economy •

Maintaining the correct tire inflation pressure

Asmentionedbefore, maintainingthepropertireinflationpressureis the single most important step of all the proper tire maintenance practices.Theimportanceofmaintainingthecorrecttireinflationpressure is highlighted in the previous sections . Operating tires that are notproperlyinflatedcandamagethetire(andthevehicle)inavarietyof different ways .

Proper cleaning of RV tires

Most RV owners take a great deal of pride from RV ownership and want tokeeptheirvehiclecleanandlookinggood.Thetiresshouldbenoexception.Contaminantsencounteredontheroadwilldeterioraterubber,sokeepingyourtirescleanwillnotonlykeepthemlookinggood,butitwillalsohelptoensurethatthetireswillbeabletoofferthelongestpossibleservice life .

Tocleanyourtires,useasoftbrushandamildsoap,suchasthesamekindofsoapyouwouldusetocleantheRVbodywith.

Please be aware that some products that are designed for cleaning tires or to make them shiny may have ingredients that can actually harm the tires. Some of these ingredients include petroleum products, alcohol, and silicones. When exposed to these chemicals over time, they can cause the rubber to deteriorate or lose some of its protective properties that help to hold air and resist damage. Continental recommends against the use of these products.

Proper storage of RV tires

Tire inspection and VAI® technology

It is important to inspect your tires often to check for any potential problems.Continental’spatentedVAI®technologyhelpsyoutoidentifypotentialalignmentproblemsbeforetheyaffecttheremovalmilesofthetire.VisualAlignmentIndicators,(VAI®),helpprotectyourtireinvestment.

in wear signals the occurrences of side forces—forces which may prevent straight tracking of the tire, which is a sure sign of possible misalignment.

This early warning prevention system can mean significant savings in tire bills, as well as substantial benefits such as increased original tread life. If you notice any irregular wear patterns, cracks, bulges, or anything else that appears to be out of the ordinary, you should have the tires inspected by a professional.

Vehicle speed

Increased speeds can lead to faster tread wear. The faster the vehicle speed increases, the more the load capacity decreases. In addition, increased speeds have been proven to reduce fuel economy. These factors should be considered when operating your RV at highway speeds.

Wheel & tire balance and vehicle alignment

A wheel and tire that has is not balanced properly can cause the tire to wear irregularly. An improperly balanced wheel and tire can also affect ride quality, most often distinguished by a noticeable vibration. Have your RV tires checked by a professional to make sure your wheels and tires are balanced correctly.

A vehicle that is out of alignment can cause irregular wear patterns, and cause the vehicle to “pull” in a certain direction. Alignment problems are not limited to the steer axle. The drive axles can be misaligned, causing the vehicle to constantly be pushing in a certain direction. If you notice either of these conditions, have your RV checked by a professional to make sure the vehicle is aligned properly.

Matching wheel and tire load ratings

It is important that you choose a tire that has a comparable load rating to the load rating of the wheel. Although you may find tires in your size that can handle a high load rating, the wheels on your vehicle may not be rated for a load of that weight. Never exceed the wheel’s load rating.

Mixing tire types

Continental recommends that tires of the same size, brand, and model be used on the same axle. Mixing tires of different sizes or stages of tread life can result in irregular wear and poor ride quality.

Tire repair

If your tire is in need of repair, see your closest Continental dealer. You can find a dealer locator for your Continental RV tires at www.continental-truck.com. The dealer must examine not only the outside of the tire, but the inside as well to check for any possible damage and to make the necessary repairs.
