How will this building be interpreted after we are gone? What will it look like years from now? Will the experience be the same? Will she tell us anything? Will her mes -sage translate clearly? Will our childrens children see in this monument a picture of a city, strange yet human, proud and booted like a mirage somewhere between Heaven and Earth? Will they recognize
difficult their city in an ancient, positive light despite
its hard times when the most thing of all was to be and remain a man?

BRIDGING THE BOULEVARD
Winter - Spring 2015
Mixed Use Bridge
AIA Savannah Thesis Award Candidate

Professor Julie Rogers Varland
Thesis research digs deep to explore the Bosnian national and cultural identity to set aside the tensions that sparked conflict within its population by uniting the city of Mostar through an urban solution of a monumental public space. The architectural motivation is to bridge and seal the gaps between Islamic and Christian communities and to take the city back to the days when it was lauded as one of the most diverse and integrated urban areas in the world. The Loop unifies and establishes the citys balance, connecting the ruins and reviving the abandoned part of the city.

THE DISTRICT OF MOSTAR
Mostar has reached a critical point in its development. Confined by various geographic features (it is situated along Neretva River and surrounded by mountains), the growing city now straddles a spider road network with a starting point on downtown periphery. The river with routes and roads create powerful outward pressures that are visible when mapping human - use patterns against the backdrop of the political boundary that exists around the city of Mostar.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM
The idea of unifying Mostar is based on the diagrammatic analysis of the citys past and present relationship with the Mostarians. The concept also reveals historic events and the implications of such occurences over various time periods. This visual then ends with the project goal in mind; a more unified, better and hopeful Mostar, primarily for its own people and secondarily, those who may visit the city.

1.2 POLITICAL DIVISION
Political conflict between Croats and Bosniaks involves corruption, poverty and ethnical differences to create the ideologies of a government which imposes a certain manner of thinking among its inhabitants, forcibly creating different classes and spatially dividing their city.
1.3 SOCIALDIVISION
Ethnic differences link demographic and socio - economical aspects of Mostar and refer to the differences in culture and religion between communities. City scale creates chances of erupting in violence. Gated communities, ghettoes, slums, and global economic processes continue to sustain this division.
1.2 SPATIAL DIVISION
The Boulevard served as a former front-line during the Siege of Mostar in Yugoslavian war, and today it serves as a physical separation of the city. The East part of Mostar also known as the old city is mostly inhabited by Muslims, while the West belongs to Croatians. The existing bridges in Mostar give the site potential for a unification.

Pre- war of existing ruin on the Spanish Square was known as Privredna Bank called Yugoslavia. It was merged with the Business and Administra-tion Center on the East and known best as a gathering place. During the war the ruin was bombed and both floors and walls were destructed, making it unaccessible and it became the dead space. According to Leb-beus Woods, and his theory of architecture after war, the decision was made to create free spaces within the existing ruin which would behave like circulation ramps that provide easier acces for the inhabitants, therefor reviving the ruin instead of demolishing it. With this design method, I am creating architecture of new-old, giving the opportunity of the ruins to change human bad memories into the good memories of appreciation.

LOOP OF UNITY
The Loop of Unity, lightweight, nimble, flexible is juncture between its surround-ing and Mostarians. The main idea of the bridge is to unify two factors: the secu-lar and spiritual and to establish the balance between left and right side of the city. It is planned with the strategy of providing a distincitve experience while crossing the bridge because of its specif-ic design and views that people encoun-ter when going through the gate .

FORM
Unique yet simple and attractive shape awakens spirituality and builds new icon for the city of Mostar and its inhabitants. Loop on the bridge creates symbolic gate mimicking the traditional bridges of the city. The highest point of the loop raises towards the sky with upper deck-ing which establishes juncture between heaven and earth. The bridge connects two parts of the city and provides pedes-trian access to the surrounding ruins.

RE- VITALIZING THE RIVERWALK
Fall 2014
Urban Design
Proposal
In Collaboration with Nicole Gittings
Professor Huy Ngo
The projects seeks to revitalize and solve the problematic areas on the site and bring the city back to the river by redeveloping the bridge-river connec-tion trough addition and subtraction. Current site conditions were redevel-oped rather than re-built and emphasis was placed on the use of existing materi-als. The new environment consists of different activities and interlocking circulation throughout the site. The weaving approach used to designt he riverwalk and the road was influenced by the Asian culture of cloth-knotting.

Professor Emad Afifi
The project is located in Panama Pacifico, an area with great potential for expan-sion because it is populated by large enterprise companies. The building serves research and development laboratories which produce refrigiration units.. The hot and humid climate, and the dynamic culture and environment of Panama were key factors in designing a parametricist project. While the design may appear to be unconventional, close attention was paid to achieve the main goal- impeccable, pure functionality.

7 CLIMATE MANAGEMENTSolar and wind analysis reshaped the building with a proposed double glazed facade to control natural daylight and ventilation.
1 SITE BORDERSite is located a the starting point of a recently constructed industrial zone Panama Pacifico in Panama City.
2 SITE CONNECTIONSAccessibility, connection and urban context were the factors which defined site circulation.
3 BUILDING FOOTPRINTBuilding placement was selected for its easy accessibility from the main road and surrounding buildings.
4 PUBLIC SPACESRemoving a part of the footprint laid the groundwork for a public plaza, and created a magnetic entrance.
5 ADAPTING PUBLIC ATRIUMSpatial arrangement and public use were defined through the creation of the central void which define two main building sections.
6 EXPANSION OF GREEN SPACESThe emerging mass was reshaped in order to create the focal point of the building where users can experience the dynamic triangulated atrium facade.

This type of a facade conceals the form of the building to which it is attached. Made out of 2 pure aluminum, it helps bring the natural ventilation which circulates around the building. The idea behind pinched holes was to control the amoun of glazing within natural daylight. It is rotatable by 45 degrees.
Type of an air supply tower which serves as the main source of the air for the public faceted atrium. Since the atrium is open from below there had to be an air supplier which was palced within the space, receiving the air from the underground air supply tubular pipes.

Located in Washington DC, within a business area with plethora of prospects for future development, this project seeks to reignite the cultural vibe of this part of the city. A multi -purpose complex includes a building with a public plaza and a recreational area near the water-front. The dynamic, climatic design achieves both ecological and social flexibility, which creates potential for sustainability and an active cutlural revival of the business district.

Competition
Intern at GRUPA4
Principal Branko Belacevic
The coastal city of Herceg Novi is synon-ymus with steep hills that give the city a unique charm, as well as an insurmount-able transportation problem. The government called competition for the public pedestrian communication to connect the two focal points of the city- the old fortress and the waterfront. Our studio presented a practical and effective proposal which linked three city layers and landmarks, while also connecting the citys cultural identity with its unique historical landscape and architecture.

Intern at Chambless King Architects
Principal John Chambless
The Tankersley Farm is a single-family dwelling designed with a country farmhouse feel. The house focuses on naturalmaterial, simple detailing and physical connections to the outside. The exterior is simple and strives to recall the iconic farmhouse image of vertical board & batten siding, large windows and metal standing seam roofs. The interior main level of the house features plenty of open spaces withexposed wood framed ceilings and direct access to a large wrap-around front porch.Visual connections to the exterior are major part of each space within the house and give you plenty of opportunity to enjoythe surrounding.

Thesis research digs deep to explore the Bosnian national and cultural identity to set aside the tensions that sparked conict within its population by uniting the city of Mostar through an urban solution of a monumental public space. The architectural motivation is to bridge and seal the gaps between Islamic and Christian communities and to take the city back to the days when it was lauded as one of the most diverse and integrated urban areas in the world. The Loop unies and establishes the citys balance, connecting the ruins and reviving the abandoned part of the city.

GENERATIVE ARCHITECTUREPARAMETRIC DESIGN
Generative Architecture consists of a set of projects which begin the research around algorithmic prototyping meth-odologies which allow fabrica-tions of non-regular geometrical typolo-gies based on parametric design. Inspired by the observation of natural environments and the climatic condi-tions the projects are communicated through formulas within computer aided design softwares like Revit and Grasshoper (Rhinocheros 3D). There is an equal importance of aesthet-ics as functional design solutions, where the greatest impact is given to studies of practical and environmental enclosures and building ski. The following digital projects were a part of Exposed Under-lay exhibition and published in the exhibit catalogue, in Savannah Georgia.

This digital project explores increments and recursion strategies and how they relate to form, surface and structure. The intent was to use a conceptual massing environment and adaptive components in Revit to explore design implications related to increments and recursive parametric meth-ods for the development of a vertical structure(skyscraper) or a horizontal structure (ground scraper). In either case, the use of exed increments resulted in a canhage or recursive geom-etry of generated structure.
