What Are We Going To Do

• Now that You Have Surveyed Around the Building

• Exchange notes with other teams– Each team only needs to go part way around the

building – together you have a traverse all around the building

• An Excel Spreadsheet called Traverse Assistant was prepared for this class. You will put your survey data into it and get output suitable for use in –

• MineSight – a 3D graphics program that will create a visual map of your traverse

Take a Look at Traverse Assistant

Traverse assistantHas you followSeveral steps inPutting in your data

You will enter yourData into yellowFields

Answers orCalculation areasAre in green or red.(Don’t mess withThe formulas in theseFields)

Page 4: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

Start by Putting in the Location of Your Instrument Station

Put in the coordinatesAnd elevation of yourFirst point(the example has theState Plane CoordinatesOf your first point byThe grate near theCorner of Lincoln andDouglas)

{Yes that mean youWill start by enteringThese very sameCoordinates}

Page 5: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

Next Enter Your Height of Instrument

If you used a tapeMeasure in tenths ofFeet you have yourInstrument in decimalFeet – enter it here

In this example IAssumed I hadMeasured my heightOf instrument with aRegular tape in feetInches and fractions ofAn inch

I enter the feetI enter the inches

I enter the fractionOf an inch – in thisCase 3/16 – whichThe spreadsheet converted to decimals

Note that I can only enter my distance in one typeOf unit at a time – if I choose decimal feet it is not feet and inches.

Your height of instrument is uniqueTo your survey work.

Page 6: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

Finally I Enter My Backsight Azimuth

I happen to have myBacksight azimuth inDecimal degrees.(For backsighting thePower plant smoke-Stack the azimuth is59.229 degrees)

Note I could have hadThat azimuth in Grads,Mills, or degreesMinutes and seconds.

{This backsight azimuth will be the starting backsightAzimuth for everyone on this project}

I Scroll Down to Start Entering Information About My Foresight

Page 8: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

I First Enter the Angle to the Right That I Turned from my Backsight

In this case IAssumed I hadMeasured thatAngle in Degrees, MinutesAnd SecondsBut it could haveBeen in Grads orMills.

Note that theSpreadsheetConverts any ofThe measures toDecimal degrees.

Page 9: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

Next You Will Enter the Vertical Angle to Your Foresight

DifferentInstrumentsMeasure verticalAngle differently.

Some measureThe angle fromThe horizontal –This is especiallyTrue of oldTransits

Many newerInstruments useA zenith angleMeasured downFrom vertical

Note that this spreadsheetWill take either a zenith orAn angle from the horizonAnd will take it in grads,Degrees Minutes SecondsOr Mills.

You May Have Measured Your Distance to the Foresight by Stadia

or EDM

If you measured byStadia just enter theUpper, middle, andLower rod readings(all our rods are inDecimal feet)

Page 11: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

If You Measured by EDM Skip Step #6 and move to #7

Enter your EDMDistance whichWill already beIn decimal feet

Then enter theHeight of yourReflector – noteYou can enterIn decimal feet ofFeet inches andFractions ofInches dependingOn what kind ofTape you used.

Note that if you have entered something for Stadia you should not also claim to haveDone the shot by EDM

Scroll Down Again to Start Reading Your Answers

We are going to runMinesight by starting atA known point and thenMoving in a specifiedDirection at a givenDirection.

Thus we read the outputFor distance and directionIn this example it is395.73 feet at an azimuthOf 284.179 degrees.

If it’s a new project location (most likely is) it will ask about creating a resource

folder

Say Yes.

Lets Work on a Guess

59.229 degrees

N

The Buidling is down inHere to the South and West

North 381,288East 2,570,639

Our survey stations won’tGo much further northAnd most will be to the south(ie – smaller northing)

One of our stations isOver by the Arena a littleFurther east but mostPoints are to the west(ie – smaller easting)

Page 18: Make a Great Map of Your Engineering Building Traverse ©Mar. 2008 Dr. B. C. Paul Note – This presentation contains screen shots from the Mine Sight and

More Guessing

The building is probably lessThan 1000 feet in eachdirection

So our smallest northing is about 380,400 with a max of about 381,400Our smallest easting is about 2,569,800 with a max of about 2,570,800

I have two possibilities

• One possibility is that the foresight I just put in was a sideshot to a building corner– I might have taken several more side shots

• Another possibility is that I was foresighting the next point I would move my instrument to.
