  KIRKGATE MARKET 

Founded in 1857 and the birthplace of Marks & Spencer Plc which still has a stall here, Kirkgate Market is a stunning Grade 1 listed building which has grown and expanded over the decades and is the proud bearer of the title ‘Britain's Favourite Market’ and remains one of the largest in Europe.

Situated in the heart of the city centre, five minutes walk from the rail station and right next to the bus and national coach station, with its own NCP car park, Kirkgate Market’s location for footfall is already enviable, evidenced by the 8.5 million visitors through its doors last year.

However the £150 million Victoria Gate shopping and leisure centre is under construction opposite the market, which will contain the largest John Lewis store outside London and a further 800 space car park, makes Kirkgate Market quite simply the hottest place in town for your business.

Kirkgate Market has won a Trip Advisor Award of Excellence in 2014 & 2015 and has a large and loyal following on social media with 20,000 followers on Twitter, on Facebook and on Pinterest as well as its own dedicated customer website

The council invests significantly in the promotion and market-ing of Kirkgate Market locally, regionally and national and the Markets team has done many on and off site promotions and events working with partners such as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Johnson Press, Leeds Rhinos, Leeds United, Monarch Airlines to name just a few.

  REFURBISHMENT 

A programme of maintenance and renewal to bring the building up to modern standards.

A new flexible dining, events and activities area.

Creation of a 10 x 10m stage area with screen, audio & lighting equip-ment

A new retail area which will bring together meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and other fresh foods.

Create new pedestrian routes linking the market to the surrounding high footfall retail destinations.

Opening up the frontage of the Market to the new Victoria Gate

shopping centre.

The redevelopment work began in February 2015 and Phase 1 completed May 2016 ahead of completion of the new Victoria Gate shopping centre and John Lewis department store.

The redevelopment and refurbishment of Kirkgate Market is vital in securing its long term future as a popular retail destination in Leeds City Centre. Leeds City Council has committed £13.5 million to the redevelopment project which concentrates on:
