Making
Dear
Supporters
For 30 years, City Harvest has been New York City’s private response to hunger. We have grown from a small group of volunteers borrowing cars or
transporting food on foot to a sophisticated fleet of trucks and bikes connecting thousands of generous food donors and some 600 community food programs.
Steadily increasing the amount of good, nutritious food we provide to hungry men, women, and children in our city has depended on a strong base of support among food and financial donors as well as volunteers. In partnership with the communities we feed, City Harvest has also been able to establish innovative programs that address the complex dietary challenges New Yorkers face on an ongoing basis.
In early 2011, City Harvest approved a strategic plan with two five-year goals – doubling the amount of food we rescue and deliver to some 60 million pounds annually by 2016 to better meet the sustained high need for emergency food in New York City; and developing and expanding our Healthy Neighborhoods initiative so that we can help make good food easier to find within high-need communities.
This report shares City Harvest’s progress in meeting – and in many cases exceeding – our first-year goals for the plan. With the
help of our new Food Rescue Facility, last year City Harvest provided more than 40 million pounds of emergency food to feed hungry men, women, and children in New York City – surpassing our original goal of 30 million pounds by 33%. Through deep partnerships and an innovative suite of programs, Healthy Neighborhoods has grown to improve healthy food access and knowledge in target communities in each borough.
This year, City Harvest’s annual gala launched our 30-30-30 Campaign to raise funds in support of the strategic plan, and many of the guests at An Evening of Practical Magic stepped forward to support City Harvest’s vision for New York City. The evening raised a record-breaking $2 million.
City Harvest has risen to the challenge in responding to our city’s hunger crisis in this first year of our plan. But we also know that more than 1.3 million of our neighbors live at risk of hunger – often in the same communities where obesity and diabetes are common. City Harvest’s vision is of a city that is hunger-free, which we can achieve if we all work together.

What is the first step in decreasing the gap between the food New Yorkers need and what they can access?
Finding more food. City Harvest has 30 years of experience making the fastest connection between a donor with excess food and a person in need. Our strategic plan called for City Harvest to establish a home base that would allow us to use our trucks and bikes to the fullest, quickly moving food where it will do the most good.
City Harvest’s Food Rescue Facility has been a game changer for our operations. A 45,400-square-foot building on the banks of the East River in Long Island City, our Food Rescue Facility is equipped with ample cooler and freezer space, racking for dry goods, loading docks where our trucks are filled with food each morning, and a volunteer area where volunteers can sort and repack food.
Fully operational in November, 6 months ahead of schedule, the Food Rescue Facility was helping City Harvest’s trucks and bikes efficiently move more food every month. By the close of the fiscal year in June, over 40 million pounds of food had reached people in need, care of City Harvest.
City Harvest’s focus on fresh produce has continued to set us apart. With the help of vendors at Hunts Point Terminal Produce Cooperative, Migliorelli Farm, S&SO Farm and other Greenmarket farmers, and produce suppliers like Tay Shing Corp and Fruit Importers Americas, City Harvest provided some 24 million pounds of produce this year. FreshDirect, Baldor Speciality Foods, and B.J.’s Wholesale Club filled our trucks with some of the highest-quality food in the five boroughs, and Tom Cat Bakery with the freshest bread. As part of our efforts to match donations with the agencies best able to put them to use, City Harvest directed nearly 3 million pounds of kosher food to programs serving observant families.
City Harvest’s food sourcing team has worked aggressively to identify and recruit new food donors such as farmers and meat wholesalers, and has cultivated loyal, long-term partners to rescue every available pound without sacrificing quality. These strong donor connections helped ensure nutrient-dense food like protein, low-fat dairy, 100% juice, and fresh produce made up some 84% of the food we delivered to agencies.
Meeting An
Immediate Need

City Harvest’s strategic plan is committed to increasing the level of emergency food we deliver to agencies throughout the five boroughs, so that hungry
New Yorkers everywhere have somewhere to turn to help them put food on the table. Our Healthy Neighborhoods initiative increases focus on high-need communities where poverty, hunger and high rates of diet-related diseases exist side-by-side.
Our plan called for City Harvest to add Healthy Neighborhoods programs in Manhattan and Queens to our existing areas of focus in the South Bronx, the North Shore of Staten Island, and Bed Stuy in Brooklyn. After assessing the need and available resources in each community, City Harvest launched programs in Washington Heights/Inwood and Northwest Queens. We set up Mobile Markets to boost the amount of available fresh produce and began working with residents to assess their dietary challenges.
This year, City Harvest provided 8 million pounds of emergency food to programs located in our five Healthy Neighborhoods communities and 1 million additional pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables through Mobile Markets. We expanded our
campaign to support people in changing their shopping and eating habits, offering 64 hands-on cooking and nutrition classes, nearly 30 supermarket workshops, and 16 farmer’s market workshops. Nearly 13,000 local residents participated in healthy cooking demonstrations held at Mobile Markets, farmer’s markets, bodegas, Green Carts, supermarkets, and community-based organizations, building community awareness of healthy eating.
City Harvest’s vision is to help food retailers succeed in offering affordable healthy choices to their communities on an ongoing basis. In Bed Stuy, Stern Business School students performed market research and helped create a business plan for local corner stores who want to offer healthy snacks, and City Harvest volunteers led cooking demonstrations and supermarket tours at Food Bazaar locations to encourage shoppers to buy and eat healthfully. Across our Healthy Neighborhoods, we launched a Healthy Supermarkets program based on best practices established by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to help businesses boost the selection, variety, and quality of the fruits and vegetables they offer.
Healthier Communities

City Harvest has long depended on the generosity of the corporate community to fuel our work. For the second year, Credit Suisse and its employees showed
their commitment to fighting hunger in our city by donating to City Harvest more than any other charity through the company’s Holiday Charity Initiative, earning a match from its Foundation and first prize totaling more than $280,000 in support. Longstanding partners BlackRock and Citi found ways all year long to engage employees in giving their money and time to City Harvest.
Goldman Sachs, American Express, and other corporate teams contributed more than 5,300 hours to help repack large donations of produce into family-sized bags for hungry New Yorkers, while Barclays helped underwrite An Evening of Practical Magic for the third year in a row. Recognizing our efficiency in meeting the need for food using resources at hand, The Starr Foundation and Robin Hood each invested more than $1 million in City Harvest’s efforts to fight hunger.
City Harvest seemed to be everywhere over the holidays – from NBC’s Nonstop Day of Giving to registers at Duane Reade to food collection boxes at local schools. Held from November through January, the city’s largest annual food drive, Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry of New York, again broke records at 1.3 million
pounds of food collected at schools, firehouses, police stations, and through individual food drives throughout the city.
New Yorkers once again joined forces to fight childhood hunger this spring. In May, the 10th annual Skip Lunch Fight Hunger was extended to a full week, raising $650,000 with hundreds of teams donating the cost of lunch to the fight against hunger. From Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, our Feed the Kids food drive inspired New Yorkers to contribute more than 275,000 pounds of food especially for children.
Guests mingled with celebrity chefs to enjoy some of the best food in New York while contributing to City Harvest’s mission at our signature tasting event, Bid Against Hunger. On Your Plate brought old and new friends to the table to raise critical funds, and Summer in the City, held on the summer solstice, helped introduce City Harvest to a new generation of young tastemakers. In September 2011, The Brooklyn Local gathered urban foodies together for City Harvest’s first-ever artisanal marketplace.
City Harvest is able to have an immediate impact on hunger in our city thanks to private donors and businesses working together: over 38,000 individual donors supported City Harvest this year, along with thousands of food donors and 2,200 volunteers. New Yorkers have proven – through City Harvest – that we can accomplish more when we stand together.
A Generous City

Food and financial donors, volunteers, and others who believe in our work joined City Harvest on stage at An Evening of Practical Magic on April 24, 2012. They
asked the audience to help City Harvest lead the way in making a real impact on hunger in our city by giving to our 30-30-30 Campaign.
Doubling the amount of food we rescue and deliver annually over the course of five years and significantly expanding our work within high-need communities will require City Harvest to operate at a sustained higher level going forward. The 30-30-30 Campaign is City Harvest’s response to the
record demand for emergency food and the epidemics related to poor nutrition that we face as a city. The donors listed here have stepped forward in the past year with important leadership gifts to support City Harvest’s vision for New York City.
The 30-30-30 Campaign was named in honor of our 30 years of service to New York City, the 30 million more pounds City Harvest will deliver annually for hungry New Yorkers by 2016, and the $30 million additional dollars we need to raise over the course of five years. It supports City Harvest’s five-year strategic plan, approved in January 2011.

City Harvest 2012 Annual Report

Now serving New York City for 30 years, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women, and children. This year, City Harvest will collect more than 42 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.
