Christ Lutheran Church
Making Christ Known
2
A Message from Pastor Steve
Each November we ask members of Christ Lutheran Church to purposely/intentionally consider their gifts of time, talent, and offerings to further the mission of God through Christ Lutheran Church. To be a mission center making Christ’s love known takes a lot of volunteers and generosity. I am grateful for all you do!
You will receive time and talent forms by mail along with pledge cards asking you to intentionally commit to helping us do our mission through this next year.
I have been visiting our River of Life Sunday school classes where the seeds of God’s word are planted in our children. I am impressed with our confirmation youth and their questions. I am excited that our high school youth group that meets Wednesday nights is having meaningful conversations about values and how to make Christ’s love known at school. We have youth serving on mission trips and volunteering for service locally. Christ Lu-theran is fortunate to have youth helping lead worship music at our second service.
It is a blessing to have Pastor Nirmala’s part time help in teach-ing, preaching, and visiting. We are blessed to have a member led visitation team sharing Christ’s love through visits in homes. Our Thursday morning mom’s small group is an encouragement to mothers. We have a Wednesday morning adult Bible study where older adults find support and hope as we read and dis-cuss the Bible together. We are blessed to have music options for youth and adults in our choirs and bells. Together with other congregations we are fighting hunger and spreading the gospel in our region and beyond. In 2016 our worship attendance to-taled about 12,808. We are strengthening God’s people through God’s word and the sacraments. The people of God are being equipped to serve God through their many vocations.
There are many more impactful opportunities that are happening because of your support of our mission. Your commitment to sharing generously of your time, talents, and treasure is a grate-ful response to God’s generosity. Together may we continue to faithfully bear witness to all that God has done and is doing through Jesus Christ!
We are equipping all ages to lovingly serve God and people. I can think of no greater mission in our blessed and broken com-munity, country and world. Thanks for your support!

Message from Pastor Nirmala
Attitude of Gratitude
A Jewish proverb states, “Each life is like one letter of the alphabet. Alone it can seem utterly meaningless, but combined with others it can be part of something beautiful.”
As members of Christ Lutheran we are like individual letters that together spell out the beautiful epic of God’s love. When we participate in this larger story the world is transformed and our lives find meaning. Through the generous financial support of individuals and families, Christ Lu-theran is able to provide the worship, outreach and mission programs that demonstrate the reign of God and the power of Christ in our own community, the nation and the world. Together we can accomplish amazing things that no one person or small group of people can do on their own.
As Luke tells it, one day Jesus is walking in the direction of Jerusalem with his disciples. They come near a village and pass by a leper colony on the out-skirts, which is where the colonies were forced to locate. Ten lepers, their skin hanging from their bodies, come out calling to Jesus. They stop at a safe dis-tance and shout to Jesus for mercy. They are hoping for a miracle. He does not disappoint them.
Jesus tells the ten lepers to go see the priest, which is necessary before they can return to the community. On their way, they suddenly discover their lepro-sy is gone! Only one of the healed lepers, a Samaritan, returns to Jesus to thank him. He comes back and throws himself on the ground before Jesus in gratefulness. Jesus is stunned. “Were not ten lepers cleansed?” he asks. “Where are the rest?” (Luke 17:17)
Good question! Where are they? Better yet, who are they, those nine who showed no gratitude at all? Jesus offers a hint when he says, “Was only this foreigner able to return and give thanks to God for his healing?” (Luke 17:18) Here the Bible gives us a new twist on an old story; it is the Good Samaritan in reverse. This time the Samaritan is the one getting helped by the side of the road.
The Samaritan returns to give thanks. What about the others? Do you sup-pose they were locals who took their cleansing for granted? Maybe they felt entitled for what they received?
Entitlement is the enemy of gratitude and our culture is awash in entitlement. We live in this nation, this state, this community as if we had it all coming to us, as if we believed only in ourselves. That attitude infects the church as well. For those who follow Jesus, gratitude is directed towards God, and the giving that accompanies that gratitude results in giving our time, talents and treasures to support the church and its mission. When we are genuinely grateful, we cannot help but give ourselves away for the sheer joy of saying “thank you” to God. So this year, when you are asked to support our Church, remember the ten lepers who were healed by Jesus. Will you be like the one who came back to Christ in gratitude? “God loves the Cheerful Giver” Peace and Joy Pastor Nirmala Reinschmidt

Adult Forum Starting at 9:15am on Nov. 5th we will have a 6 week vid-eo series during the adult forum. We will be watching “Blessed Life” by Pastor Robert Morris. He is a well-known pastor, author and speaker from Texas. Our culture is saturated with false teachings on what it means to be blessed. What does the Bible say about it? How can we truly live blessed lives? This series will encourage and challenge us about the way we think about generosity and living a blessed life! Looking forward to seeing you at this enriching forum.
Thanksgiving Ecumenical Services
Christ Lutheran will no longer provide a Thanksgiving Ecumenical service due to a lack of attendance. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Martha Gehrking or Pastor Steve.

Movie Time ~ room November 19th, at 2:00 ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted mother. Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping
Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling sto-ries. Their life, however, is anything but typical--they are trapped--confined to a 10-by-10-foot space that Ma has euphemistically named Room. Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to es-cape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world.

Family Promise News - IHN - Will You Serve?
Our next host week is coming up. December 24 to 31. I know that is Christmas week. If we do have a family to host we will likely put up the family at a hotel in Rochester the 24th and 25th and possibly another night or two as well. Our first host week in 2018 is March 11-18. We are very thankful for the almost 40 volunteers that help with this program. The families that we host are also thankful. A recent family that stayed with us during our last host week and has now moved into more long term housing has asked us to express their profound grati-tude to all the volunteers and organizations that make the Family Prom-ise program work. It has made a big difference in their lives. It would be very helpful and informative to members of CLC if someone or a group could help us make a video for use with the new visual screen we use during services. I think a three minute video presenta-tion could encourage more volunteers. This would make a fantastic youth service project that could influence lives for years to come, not just for our guests but for us as well. The annual choir concert fundraiser is November 17 at Bethel Lutheran in Rochester. A silent auction starts at 6 PM and the concert is at 7:30 PM.
An upcoming training session for new volunteers is November 11 at Mt. Olive in Rochester. A lunch will be served at 11:45 and the training starts at noon. Please contact Bob Brekke if you want to attend as they want to know how many lunches to prepare.
As always we encourage your questions and need your participation in this program. Please contact any coordinator for further information.
