Types of Inferences

Schema Based• Depend on the

prior knowledge• Allow the reader to

elaborate on text by adding information that has been implied by the author.

Text Based• Requires reader to

put together two or more pieces of information

• Four techniques: 1. Predicting 2. Question Generating3. Clarifying 4. Summarizing

How To Make Inferences

• Use clues from the story to figure out something that the author has not told you.

• “Read between the lines”• Draw conclusions that are not clearly

stated in the reading. • Use metacognition - summarizing,

inferring, creating images, and predicting are strategies
