The Story Box: Franz Boas, George Hunt and the Making of AnthropologyThis exhibition explores the complex legacy of anthropologist Franz Boas’s The Social Organization and the Secret Societies of the Kwakiutl Indians (1897) and his work among the Kwakw_ak_a’wakw people of British Columbia with his Indigenous co-author George Hunt. Featuring designs by Corrine Hunt, Hunt’s great-granddaughter, it includes ceremonial objects, rare
archival photographs, manuscripts, and drawings that shed new light on the book and the ongoing cultural traditions it documents. The Story Box: Franz Boas, George Hunt and the Making of Anthropology has been organized by Bard Graduate Center and U’mista Cultural Centre, Alert Bay, BC, Canada. Support for this exhibition has been provided by generous donors to Bard Graduate Center.
Special thanks to The Audain Foundation, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Artisan Fund, and Donald Ellis for their support of the exhibition at the U’mista Cultural Centre.
Jan Tschichold and the New Typography: Graphic Design Between the World WarsGraphic designer Jan Tschichold (1902–1974) helped define the “New Typography” movement in Weimar Germany that aimed to make printed text and imagery more dynamic, vital, and modern. This exhibition features works Tschichold collected from the movement’s foremost practitioners,
including designs by El Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters, László Moholy-Nagy, and Herbert Bayer, on loan from the Museum of Modern Art and displayed together for the first time.Support for this exhibition has been provided by generous donors to Bard Graduate Center.
