President’s Message
As you can see, your club has been very busy since our General
Meeting a week ago. We participated in the Puakea Foundation
Koa Canoe Blessing, Community Day at Kualoa Beach Park
demonstrating arts and crafts, and paddling one of the koa canoes
that was blessed. Some of us also participated in the Ke Ahe Lau
Makani at Kawaiaha‘o Church in the Festival of Hawaiian Choral
Music with the Royal Hawaiian Band that same evening.
Our club had its March Board of Directors Meeting and discussed
our 2nd reading of our Club’s Constitution, which will be presented
to our members in the April meeting. The Board of Directors
3
hopes to complete the By-Laws in our April Board of Directors
Meeting which will also be our 2nd reading and then we will
present both to the General Membership in the April meeting.
We are all getting ready for the Prince Jonah Kuhio Celebration
Floral Parade and Ho‘ike‘ike, which will be held on Saturday,
March 28, 2015. We will be participating in the parade and will
have a snack booth at Kapi‘olani Park after the parade. Please
come out and help us in the snack booth. This will be a great day
of fun and enjoying the wonderful Hawaiian Music in the park.
Remember, our meeting is early this month. The meeting will be
held Thursday, March 19, 2015 because the gym will be closed on
Kuhio Day, March 26th. I look forward to seeing all of you then.
I want to thank Charles Kapua for the ono Luau Stew he made for
our February meeting. You can all look forward to the Fresh
Corned Beef and Cabbage that Lorna Pacheco and Tina Andrade
will be preparing in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. You can all
bring your dishes to compliment this main dish. Please call Lorna
Pacheco at 781-2488 and let her know what you will be bringing.
Mahalo to Pohai Keli‘ia‘a for a job well done with the Second
Water Station for the Great Aloha Run. The turnout was great,
Mahalo to all that participated in the run and those family and
friends that came out to help.
The Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic has testified at the Legislature in
Support of SB786 SD 1 - Relating to the Aha Moku Advisory
Council with the Senate Committee on Ways and Means on
February 26, 2015.
I also sent in a testimony in support of Jobie Masagatani for
her confirmation to be kept on as the Director of Hawaiian
Home Lands. She has been confirmed.
4
On March 11, 2015, I testified in support of Carleton Ching to be
confirmed as the Chairman for the Department of Land and
Natural Resources. His confirmation has not been announced yet.
These are all subjects that we talked about and discussed at our
past General Meetings.

PUAKEA FOUNDATION KOA CANOE BLESSING
On Saturday, March 7, 2015, on the eve of Hokule‘a’s 40th
Birthday, Puakea Foundation blessed, and lauched their two
renovated koa canoes at Kualoa Beach Park. Master Koa Canoe
Builder, Uncle Bobby Puakea and his Foundation, perpetuate the
preservation of the traditional Hawaiian Art of Outrigger Canoe
Carving, and teach the Canoe Culture of the Pacific Islands.
"Kamana'o Dureg, Kevin Leonguerrero, Elke Ahleong, John
Klaiber, Tammy Dureg, Peter Ahleong, Penny Kalua, (In memory
of Kevin Wessel), Liz Sabog"
Uncle Bobby Puakea worked on the two koa canoes, “Honaunau”
belonging to the Honolulu Pearl Canoe Club, and a canoe his
father built, “Ho‘ola”, meaning “new life or rebirth.” “Rebirth” is
so appropriate considering “Honaunau” was almost 80% destroyed
during a canoe regatta in 2011. However, with Uncle Bobby’s
mastery skills and the dedication of a few volunteers, he
accomplished a task no one dared to take on. Our Pearl Harbor
Hawaiian Civic Club Crew paddled the canoe to Kualoa Beach
Park from He‘eia. The PHHCC team members are shown here.

Kevin-Lee Kwan
Bobby Moderow
Danny Carvalho
George Kuo
Martin Pahinui
Aaron Mahi
This special concert will feature some of Hawaii’s finest kiho‘alu
artists playing a wide range of slack key styles. Whether
traditional or contemporary, the common bond of the older or
modern styles is the feeling of “chicken skin” and amazement at
how the guitar can sound like two guitars being played at the same
time, plucking the bass and melody together creating a sound that
is unique to Kiho‘alu.
14
Frank Carlos studied kiho‘alu with Aunty Alice Namakelua and
presents her old style from the early 1900’s of picking one string,
one note, very simply played, but so sweet and soothing, taking
you back to the old Hawaiian lifestyle when life was simpler.
Leonard Keala Kwan, Jr. and Kevin-Lee Kwan represent the
Hawaiian tradition of learning kiho‘alu passed on through
generations, learning from their father Leonard Kwan Sr., who in
turn learned from his Uncle Pete Hau‘oli. Leonard recorded the
very first full length album of kiho`alu in the early 1960’s and his
recording “Opihi Moemoe” has inspired younger generations to
take up kiho‘alu, and even inspired one of the all-time great
guitarists, Chet Atkins, to record his own version of “Opihi
Moemoe.”
Bobby Moderow performs and records with his group, Maunalua,
and learned kiho‘alu from Raymond Kane, who had also
collaborated with Leonard Kwan on the first full length albums of
kiho‘alu. Raymond taught many students from Hawaii and around
the world, and imparted his unique style that was passed on to him
from an older Hawaiian fisherman, Albert Kawelo, who lived in
the old Hawaiian fishing village at Zablan Beach, Nanakuli.
Danny Carvalho represents the younger generation of kiho‘alu
artists who were inspired by the older traditional artists in learning
kiho‘alu, and have infused their own modern influences into their
style of playing kiho‘alu. Danny’s father and mother both played
kiho‘alu and influenced Danny from a young age to take up
kiho‘alu. Danny records and also performs at various locations,
and is noted for his very complex style of Kiho‘alu.
George Kuo learned kiho‘alu from playing along and getting close
with many of the older generation of kiho‘alu artists and Hawaiian
musicians and carries on their feelings of having good times and
kanikapila with friends from the older carefree days of Hawaiian
15
lifestyle. George, who played with Eddie Kamae and the Sons of
Hawaii from 1986 to 1998, has been recording and performing
from the 1970’s, and currently records and performs with Martin
Pahinui and Aaron Mahi.
Martin Pahinui grew up in a very famous musical family, and
recorded many landmark albums with his brothers Bla, Philip,
Cyril, and most notably his father, Gabby Pahinui. Martin later
played with Peter Moon and his band during the 1980’s, and
recorded many albums that influenced the start of today’s
contemporary pop style of Hawaiian music. Martin currently
performs and records with George and Aaron, and is carrying on
the legacy of his dad, in the playing of Gabby’s tuning and singing
in the old Hawaiian soul sound.
Aaron Mahi developed a love for both traditional Hawaiian and
classical symphony music while attending Kamehameha Schools,
learning and performing traditional Hawaiian music along with
classical orchestra music. Aaron graduated from Hartford Music
College to become the Bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band
and an Associate Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony. Aaron has
dedicated his life to learning and perpetuating traditional Hawaiian
music, language, and cultural traditions in his current performing
and recording with George and Martin, conducting various chorale
groups, and in his foundation work of assisting Hawaiian
communities.
