PREFACEMalaysia in general, is known for its beaches, food, tropical jungles, UNESCO heritage cities and its modern metropolis immortalised by the KLCC Twin Tower. It has been a huge success for a destination branding product and for tourism industries.

However not much is known beyond with regards to Malaysia have on innovation, its scientific inventions and exploration via a vis on its green commitment and

sustainability. This pavilion is a chance for us to showcase Malaysia’s commitment in forging ahead as an innovative and creative “green” development leader in South East Asia.

The time has come for us to move beyond the symbols of the past to create a new Malaysia that is Progressive, Creative, Innovative and Sustainable yet firmly rooted within its topographical and cultural landscapes.

EXECUTIVESUMMARY

The world expo will take the centre stage again in 2015. This will be a global event and most aptly located in the city of Milan, a city revered as the capital of fashion, arts and culture. This positioning thus makes the expo 2015 in Italy a far more interesting and attractive endeavour.

Milan exudes charm and character whilst blending historical values with contemporary vocation. A classic old versus new.

The challenge that our team thrives on is in the approach of bringing forth what Malaysia is capable of, harnessing her potentials, whilst being rooted within a historically deep and colourful cultural background. A bold break from the past is in order.

Our green ecosystem starts from the most fundamental natural element i.e the Seed. Therefore, our design approach tries to imitate the origin of nature’s morphology by metaphorically transforming into this iconic representation.

The philosophy behind my cuisine is similar to that which is found in nature; each individual organism

depends on ONE another to operate successfully as a whole.

My cooking is a reflection of the raw food materials that abound

in the local context. I am inspired and energized by the ever changing

seasons and the opportunity to transform the menu accordingly. Like nature, my cooking is evolving

all the time... Datuk Chef Ismail will be coordinating the culinary & food

content of the Malaysian pavilion

CONCEPT

‘Padi’ painting title by local artist

The SEED of CHANGE

The overall programme for the Malaysian pavilion evolves around the character of a seed or grain. The journey and flow of space will be a reflection of growth.

It is important for us to showcase various aspects of the country’s history and values, within the context of the expo’s theme, in the best way possible - visually and pragmatically.

The building design concept emphasises on the powerful character of a seed namely PADI. From the earliest of times, rice has been our staple food. Consuming rice in its

many forms and by products has become our way of life, one way or the other.

This is amplified and emerges as a physical and tangible feature, forming the iconic visual focus for the visitors to the exposition. The dynamic shape and growth nature of the seed encapsulate the celebrated form and house the country’s authentic content as it’s nutrients.

The subtle base, enveloped in growth in the form of green planting on all sides, humbly acts as a supportive partner, housing primary food and cultural elements to be experienced by visitors. Sight, Taste & Smell embodied.

In living up to our country’s representation at a world arena as prestigious and renowned as this expo, the quality of content and presentation act as the primary infrastructure to accommodate the visitors’ journey and experience. The ultimate manner in which to enhance these experiences is to bring in the best Malaysians with international recognition, incredible talent and vast exposure to collaborate in developing the project. Hence we seek to embrace the talents of U-Wei , Chef Ismail and Aida Redza as our project advisors.

Last but not least, the team recognises the immense, albeit exciting endeavour in making this pavilion a success. Having acknowledged this, the next iterative process therefore, is in the refinement and embellishment of form, function and flavour. This, we believe will be brilliantly and amply orchestrated by the esteemed team from the Ministry of Trade and Industry as well as from Matrade. This will complete the formidable team and so the unforgettable journey to Milan shall begin...

We believe inspired architecture relies on both an artistic response and a scientific and engineered approach to the brief. Both emotive and pragmatic inputs must be balanced to achieve both a functional clarity but also a building that delights us sculpturally.

The team’s principle consideration at this stage in the project is very simply buildability. In short our proposal must be commercially viable, meaning that it requires to be built within a specific budget and time frame.

A special area this food, called the micropylarendosperm, is left untouched all

winter. When the time comes, this food will be used to

fuel the initial growth of the tap root.

In spring, when the temperatures are right, the outside seed coat begins to absorb water and

swell, until the seed pops open.

SEED OF CHANGE

Page 27: Malaysian Pavilion Milano Expo 2015

The form chosen is the embodiment of a seed at a certain moment in time where it has used its nutrients in the seed itself (self sustaining) and is about to leave the ground, that pivotal moment where the foundation has been set before it rises up.

A reflection of our growing country.

FOOD SUSTAINABILITYIN THE CONTEXT OF MALAYSIAThe concept of sustainable agriculture is arecent one (or perhaps a revision of age-oldtraditional agriculture) that had evolved in great movement for sustainable agriculture has now increasing support and acceptance, as it may be a way to address many environmen-tal and social concerns. earnest in the last two decades or so.The concept of sustainable agriculture in Malaysia is still evolving and definitions and practice differ among practitioners. Essentiallysustainable agriculture integrates three mainobjectives:

· economic sustainability and profitability· environmental concerns· social acceptability.

The model for sustainable agriculture most preferred or practised by local proponents of sustainable agriculture is `organic agriculture’ or `organic farming’. Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system, which promotes and enhances biodiversity.

Biological cycles and soil biological activity is based on the low use of internal inputs and non-use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. This takes into account that regional conditions require locally adapted systems.

The Outline Perspective Plan (1991-2000) of Malaysia and the Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991-1995) marked a new era in environmental policy objectivesetting by giving priority to “responsible and well

balanced exploitation of natural resources to safeguard the requirements of future generations”. Similarly, the Second National Agricultural Policy (1992-2010) and the Seventh Malaysia Plan (1996-2000) contain the essence ofsustainable agricultural development to maintain a well-balanced approach to natural resource utilization.

FROM THE RAINFOREST

The rainforest, a natural ecosystem that houses 14,000 species of plants, 200 mammals and 240 types of trees capable of sustaining the planet and possiblyholdthekeytohealingpeople and our world.

We show the world how by protecting our jungle, we ultimately sustain ourselves. This is done via the demonstration of the function of selected species that are crucial to our future.

But as we leave the rainforest, we pose question of balance and harmony. How do we sustain both whilst progressing. Therein lies the answer to sustainability.

The forest in the highland supplies most of the peninsula’s water needs. Rivers that originate from highland forests supply fresh water to meet almost 90% of the water needs of the domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors.

And so to help visitors understand the vital role that Malaysia plays in keeping the eco- harmony of this planet, we need to go back to the source.

TO KAMPUNGThe modern kampung. The simple life.Over 8.6mil* Malaysians still live in rural envi-ronments. They live simply and survive off the land via the land or the sea.

Welcome to our fishing village,

located by the mangroves.

Mangrove forest is a very dynamic and highly productive ecosystem. It not only plays multiple ecological functions essential to its surrounding habitats, but is also an important resource for coastal communities.

Malaysia’s mangroves are more diverse than those in tropical Australia, the Red Sea, tropical Africa and the Americas. About 50% of fish landings on the west coast of Peninsular

Malaysia are associated with mangroves.

Aquaculture and agricultureTilapia farming. Organic coconut farming for life preserving virgin coconut oils. Well know for boosting levelsof good cholesterol.

We see how coconut is harvested and how we use the whole fruit (this includes watching them shave the coconut and then we tell them they can savour the coconut delights in the restaurant. Demonstrating the sustainable use of our harvest).

The concepts needed for a winning Malaysian Pavilion 2015 campaign are the same for any powerful, year-round marketing program, regardless

of the size of your company or budget. By analysing the failures and success from past pavilions in the expos before from among hundreds of pavilions, I’ve identified 10 rules that make winning campaigns work :

RULE NO.1 put strategyfirst

It doesn’t make sense to treat the pavilion as just another building among

hundreds of other buildings. Make it different. Make it memorable.

RULE NO. 2

be relevant

You don’t want to give the public visiting the expo what countless

of other pavilions have done.

Embrace new frontiers, embrace the unknown.

Live in the now and get real.

SEED OF CHANGE

80

Page 81: Malaysian Pavilion Milano Expo 2015

Keep it simple

RULE NO. 3 The most common mistake is trying to show everything at one go. The human mind can only take so much at a time.

History has shown that the most memo-rable pavilions are the ones where they touch on the most simplest of things, a

mist of cloud by Diller and Scofidio

Oftentimes we don’t have the privilege of time, as in a public pavilion avenue.

If the information and experience is strong enough, it’ll stick in the minds

of visitors sure enough without telling them anything.

RULE NO. 6It doesn’t hurt to put some provoking

thoughts so that visitors may dwell upon.

By provoking it doesn’t necessarily mean intelligent, brilliant ideas, just some-thing that could trigger the minds of

others to stop and think for a moment, a ponder.

RULE NO. 7

strike an emotional chord

Nothing strikes better than going straight to the heart.

Some pavilions have managed to do this and theirs are the ones we

Hush, don’t Rush

RULE NO. 8

Take time in creating and formulating the campaign, let everything tune in with

the pavilion and become whole.

Don’t rush ourselves into creating something which is half-cooked. After all we don’t want to show

and present our country as a half-cooked nation do we?

RULE NO. 9

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Over the course of this competition we would like to explore pavilions as a typology, investigating the city as a backdrop for our ideas while formulating and producing our own proposals for a pavilion or small space within the grounds of the 2015 Milano Expo site.

Our vision when exploring/choosing a site is to consider both the physical and ethereal elements that make up the space. Consider how our design will relate to its environment: the surrounding buildings, massing, climatic conditions, views, materiality and its place within the expo community.

The expected outcomes of this session will be to produce a well thought off proposal that we can discuss at the end of the day.

We have outlined below a sequence of studies that will guide you through this process:

• Choosing a site with a considered rationale• Investigate the elements that are found on the site• Initial ideas that respect, enhance, question or acknowledge the context• Development of ideas and the production of a physical model• Accompanying 2D design work to explain our design

SUSTAINABILITY

In today’s world “going green” has become a top priority in our society, and sustainable buildings and design are at the forefront of this green revolution. While many designers are focusing on passive and active energy systems, the reuse of recycled materials is beginning to stand out as an innovative, highly effective, and artistic expression of sustainable design.

AGRICULTURALTECHNOLOGIES

Our country with its abundance of natural rubber and its contribution to the agricultural industry means that we have natural rubber available at our disposal. Though rubber is used in a lot of parts in the construction industry, the usage of rubber on the building facade is still a virgin area, where it has the possibilities for a flexibleand semitransparent screen.

RECYCLINGOLD TIRESANDTUBES

Leftover and discarded tires makes up a large amount of wastage in disposal sites. Using recycled tires as the materials of building facade, by shredding tires and

putting them in a steel cage. It creates a semitransparent wall, providing an extra shading device against the sun as well as creating a dramatic atmosphere inside.

WAY FORWARD...“Architects in the past have tended to concentrate their attention on the building as a static object. We believe dynamics are more important: the dynamics of people, their interaction with spaces and environmental condition.”
