ENglisH As A sEcoND lANguAgE (Esl)

The ESL program is offered to students who wish to

learn and gain an understanding of the English language

as it is used in the United States, either as a second or

foreign language. Students will gain the confidence in

using authentic, real-life English every day both in and

outside the classroom with the help of our dedicated

instructors and engaging and interactive curriculum.

The ESL courses are divided into 3 levels according

to student proficiency: Level 1 (Basic), Level 2

(Intermediate), and Level 3 (Advanced). A TOEFL

preparation course is also available for students who

wish to increase their TOEFL scores and advance into

further studies in the US. Students can choose from

our Regular ESL program which consists of 20 hours

of instruction per week or our Intensive ESL program

which consists of 30 hours of instruction per week.

Each quarter is 10 weeks long and classes start at the

beginning of January, April, July and October.

At the beginning of the quarter, an assessment test

is given to evaluate the proficiency and range of skill

of the students. Students will then be placed in their

appropriate level and the focus of each class will be

catered to the language needs of the students as much

as possible. The core skills of Speaking, Listening,

Reading, and Writing are heavily emphasized throughout

all levels on top of Grammar and Vocabulary. Various

teaching materials and relevant resources are used in

all courses such as audio and visual aids, newspapers,

magazines, books, and the Internet.

locAtioN AND ENviroNMENt

Forty-two miles of magnificent coastline span the western border of Orange County in southern California, located 30 miles from south of Los Angeles and 82 miles from north of San Diego. With just over three million residents, the state’s second-most populated county saw a 25% population increase between 1990 and 2004, due in part to what many consider a perfect climate. Temperature’s average is right around 73 degrees and the county boasts a staggering 328 days of sunshine ach year.

Though famous for theme parks such as Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, Orange County goes beyond the world’s most famous mouse and offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. The county is home to nine beaches (Sea Grant’s Guide to Orange County Beaches), more than 38,000 acres of parks (County of Orange: Harbors, Beaches & Parks), and 382 miles of hiking trails (Orange County Trails) and bike paths (BikeTrails.com).
