Goals of Management Mini‐Series• To offer a general understanding of principles of 

laboratory management and professional  practice management in Pathology and 

Laboratory Medicine, with a focus on quality  improvement and patient safety.

• To provide a perspective on medical leadership,  health systems evolution and reform, and 

medical/health care organizational structures. 

Royal College Competencies• Work collaboratively with others in the organization.• Describe the structure and function of the health care 

system as it applies to Anatomical Pathology, including the  roles of Pathologists and other physicians.

• Describe the principles of health care financing, including  physician remuneration, budgeting, and organizational 

funding. • Explain the principles of quality control, quality assurance, 

and quality improvement. • Identify issues in pre‐analytic, analytic, and post‐analytic 

stages of specimen handling. 

Objectives of this Session• Understand the difference between 

leadership and management and the different  roles of directors vs. managers.

• Be familiar with how leaders make effective  decisions.

• Learn about the responsibilities of a  laboratory medical director. 

Management vs. Leadership• Management

– The skills and actions necessary to maintain the  successful functioning of the organization

– The focus is on the status quo and on control• Leadership

– The skills and actions necessary to take the  organization to a new higher level of functioning or to 

achieve a new objective– The focus is on the future and creating change
