1.0 MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS

We would like to thank everybody who has helped to lay the foundations for and start

building the Five-Leaf System during its first phase, not only through their work, but also

through their advice, encouragement and enthusiasm. A special word is due for those at the

“computer-face” over the first pilot stage (Pedro Alberto and Vitalino Silva, assisted by Joana

Flor) and then during the first full year of global reach (Daniel Neves, Sue Swain, Avgi Vallera

and Carlos Ferreira, assisted by Raquel Silva). The project has only reached its current size

and scope through the unfailing efforts of those with hands-on work involving the site and

those who have offered their time and skills on a voluntary basis. The fundamental idea

behind the project is a simple one, but transforming theory into practice has been a complex

multidisciplinary effort. What has come through the trials and tribulations of the first full

year is a fully-fledged site with exciting prospects. Our thanks to everyone involved since the

start.

3.0 REPORT ON THE YEAR OCTOBER 2011- OCTOBER 2012

3.1 Introduction

The Five Leaf system was launched globally in October 2011 after a year of intense creative

work on the structure and contents of the site. The idea behind the system is summed up in

our original mission statement:

Our aim is to help holiday makers and people travelling on business to find those involved in

the hospitality industry that value eco-performance.

The mission has not changed in essence but has broadened as we found increasing interest

in the aims of the site. Other elements have come into the picture since a trial survey of the

Portuguese hospitality industry in the spring of 2011 had shown sufficient interest to warrant

an international launch and it now includes:

- The management of hotels and other lodgings;

- Tour Operators, Travel Agents and tourist guides;

- Suppliers of materials, equipment and services;

- Organisers of various kinds of holidays (adventure, hiking, etc).

The Five-Leaf System is unique in that it brings all this information together on one site.

As the director of the one of our first Five-Leaf hotels wrote:

“We believe that it is essential, and extremely beneficial for our business, if we can play our

part (at our level) in raising awareness for the environment among our stakeholders.

We recognize that we are just taking the first steps, but our aim is simple: to do our best!

Nuno Ferreira, Director of the São Félix Hotel, May 1, 2011.

A director in a hotel which has had green practices for 20 years also wrote to us to say:

“The Jardim Atlântico hotel praises your initiative, which paves the way for the construction

of sustainable tourism”.

Maurício Vieira, Director of the Jardim Atlântico Hotel, May 10, 2011

The main principles underpinning the site were set out in the first half of 2011: registration

for hotels would be free; any form of lodging (from the very small to international groups)

would be welcome as long as the environment was high on their list of priorities; the rating

given by the Five-Leaf System would be based on self-assessment, backed by our detailed

assessment of the site and with user-generated content through our blog as an additional

Page 9: MANAGEMENT REPORT October 2011 - October 2012

check; and there would be a simple process for improving performance, so that any

management team in the system with clear-cut objectives could gain more leaves with

enhanced performance.

The site is available in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, the aim being to provide

ease of understanding across the world. As the site grows, other languages will be added,

with the architecture of the site allowing for a wide range of major world languages.

The launch in October 2011 targeted hotels, guest houses and other forms of

accommodation (one of the first members was a houseboat) and as we broadened the

contacts, more countries came in from all round the world. One important feature of the

system needs to be highlighted: this is not merely a scheme for the top eco-hotels in the

world to showcase their performance; it is just as much for those which are smaller and have

fewer resources but wish to show their concern for the environment. We now have hotels

with one leaf (having expressed interest in the scheme and a desire to improve their

environmental performance) to five leaves (clearly demonstrating a fully-fledged policy and

whole-hearted commitment to the aims of all those who value the green agenda and what it

means to the planet).

After three months of information channelled to hotels and other lodgings across the world,

there were over 100 hotels and other types of accommodation on the site. They came from

more than 50 countries, and visits to the site came also from places which were not

specifically targeted by our campaign. The number rose steadily to 350 at the end of

September 2012, practically at the rate of one new entry per day.

In the early days, as the site became better known, there were other agents in the hospitality

industry that expressed a wish to be included – if hotels could show their green credentials,

why not travel agents and tour operators on the basis of their environmental policy, and

tourist guides on the basis of their carbon footprint? Types of holiday then followed –

trekking, safaris, cycling, adventure – all assessed as to environmental awareness.

What has transpired is an all-inclusive, international, awareness-raising, dynamic site.

With the expansion (see the graphics), there came a perceived need for another side of the

site – suppliers with green policies and/or green products and services. Such products range

across the spectrum of environmental needs (detailed on the site under eco-concerns for

hotels) and the services cover sustainable practices, reflecting the push towards a more

environmentally friendly view of the world. These include transport, rainfall harvesting and

the concept of greening the supplier.

Our first year also brought in one sponsor – the Portuguese co-operative bank Crédito

Agrícola.

Figure 2 – Logo of the Crédito Agrícola

We are looking for more to help keep us going since the site has been built on personal

funds, and our limited resources have constrained our ambitions. We do not intend to let

this curb our enthusiasm, dedication and belief in the value of the site. We shall continue as

long possible since we see our site as a win-win concept.

We are now looking forward to a second year to expand and consolidate, increasing the

numbers joining the scheme and playing a small part in enhancing the prospects for a more

sustainable future.

3.2 From Lisbon to the world

Our expansion is reflected all around the world, with Five-Leaf stakeholders from 5

continents.

Our members have green policies, and this brings them in line with the Five-Leaf System and

its concern for the future of the world. It is important that people think green when they

travel.

Figure 5 – The Five-Leaf System in the World

As we can see from the world map above, there are large parts of the world that have Five-

Leaf System members (coloured green). To date, there are 79 countries, and members can

be divided into 6 categories: hotels; travel agencies; tour operators; tourist guides;

adventure holiday organisers; and suppliers.

In the distribution of the Five-Leaf System by continents, the Chart below shows that 41.8%

of members are from Europe, 20% from America (including Latin America and islands such as

Guyana and Saint Lucia), 18.2% are from Asia (including the Maldives), 14.5% are from Africa

and Asia and 5.5% from Oceania (including the Micronesia zone).

As for the number of hotels in the Five-Leaf System the tally is as follows: in October 2011,

with the global launch of the project, there were 10 members (from the pilot scheme run in

Portugal); in April 2012, this had increased to 150; and a year on, there are over 370 lodging

places (hotels, guest houses and other accommodation).

Chart 2 – Accommodation in the hospitality industry

As for tour operators, the biggest influx was up to April 2012, with 19 members, and

between April and October 2012 there were 3 more.

3.3 Analytic figures for the site

During the year up to October 2012, the Five-Leaf System site was visited by approximately

6,700 people from 113 countries.

Figure 6 – Visits to the site from around the world

Between October 2011 and January 2012, the site had approximately 870 visitors, 50.5%

being returning visitors and 49.5% new visitors.

Chart 5 – Visitors to the site – Final quarter 2011

The picture changed slightly between January 2012 and October 2012, when the site had

approximately 3,800 visitors: 48.4% were returning visitors and 51.6% were new visitors.

Analysing the results of the Five-Leaf System site, we see that it showed a growing number of

visitors and people interested in the site with approximately 3,800 visitors.

Chart 6 – Visitors to the site in 2012 – up to October

Results from social networks

These days, social networks are important tools for any project of the scale and scope of

Five-Leaf system. They complement the site itself, providing information about the members

and other stakeholders and giving users the chance to express opinions. The Five-Leaf

System page in Facebook provides extra visibility to the project, helping to connect with

members and to gain new ones. During the trial period, from 5th October to 1st December

2011, the number of Likes was 185. The overall results by gender were 52.9% male and

45.5% female.

The results by age show us that men from 18-24 years old represent 22.5% of the Likes and

women between 25-34 years old represent 12.8% of the overall figure. The ages with

smallest representation on Five-Leaf System Likes are from 13-17 and over 65 years old, with

Likes from girls (13-17) at 1.6% and boys with none. In the oldest group for Likes (over 65)

women represent 0.5% and men 1.6%.

Chart 7 – Facebook Likes Oct-Dec 2011

In 2012 the results are different. Between January and October, the number of Likes comes

in at 1,609 – 53.9% are female and 45.5% are male. These results by gender show that the

number of men that have put a Like for the project page is lower than the year before and

the number of women is higher. Over the period, 52.9% of Likes were from men and 45.5%

were women.

The age group from 18-24 years represents 12.5% in terms of the men giving Likes, 10% less

than the 2011 period, women from 35-44 years old still represent 15.4% and both genders in

the 55-64 age group have grown this year: women by 3.8 % and men by 2.9%. The over-65

age group clicking on Like, has grown too but in a different way between men and women:

younger women Likes (13-17) are 0.8% (0.8% lower than the year before) and men are 0.7%.

In the oldest group clicking on Like (over-65) men are at 1.3% (0.3% lower than the year

before) and women are 1.5% (1% higher than the year before).

3.4 Running costs

In the Five-Leaf System project, initial costs were an important issue. Investment was from

own funds and came in at approximately 60,000 EUR for start-up costs and for the first year

up to 1st October 2012 the amount invested was approximately 26,000 EUR. The only income

was from sponsorship, offsetting the costs by a relatively small amount.

The chart below details these costs.

most importantly, do business and maximise sales. It also invests in a VIP Buyers Programme

which this year will bring up to 150 domestic buyers and 75 international buyers from key

overseas markets, in addition to the thousands of visitors who attend this free to enter show

each year.

MADRID

FITUR

FITUR is a global meeting point for tourism professionals and the leading trade fair for

inbound and outbound Ibero American markets. Moreover, among the participation figures

of note was the presence of 6,313 journalists from 54 countries, a turnout that demonstrates

the importance of FITUR on the international circuit of tourism sector events.

FITUR Green

The Hotel Technology Institute (ITH), in collaboration with the Tourism Council of Madrid and

FITUR, launches the 3rd edition of FITUR GREEN, following the success of previous events.

This year again includes a series of lectures on energy management for hotels and an

exhibition area for vendors of these technologies.

PARIS

Salon Mondial du Tourisme

The International Tourism Show will be welcoming approximately 100,000 visitors in Paris at

Porte de Versailles. This is the place for all the destinations in France but also all around the

world. The uncontested leader - the World Tourism Hall - stands out as the room for all

destinations.

BERLIN

ITB Berlin

ITB Berlin is THE B2B-Platform for trade visitors – an excellent opportunity to meet business

partners and to do business. For all other visitors, ITB Berlin is a wonderful possibility to

discover the whole world within a few hours. The whole variety of travelling is present at ITB

ATHENS

IMIC Athens

The 8th annual IMIC addressed an important issue by drawing together a group of experts in

order to develop a better understanding of the role, development and future of gastronomy

and culinary heritage in tourism. At the same time, presenters and participants explored

ways to better package travel products so as to showcase, front and centre, a destination’s

wide array of food offerings and excellence in gastronomy.

4.0 SPONSORS

From October 2011, one of the aims was to find sponsors who would recognise the value of

the site. The times are not propitious but the Portuguese bank Crédito Agrícola helped to

provide financial cover for the registration of the trademark and copyright of the Five-Leaf

System project worldwide.

5.0 FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

The system has proved itself to be a dynamic organic structure, reaching out from its starting

point (hotel classification) to a wide range of activities in the hospitality industry.

Beyond this, the system could even be applied to other areas – schools, business premises

and central, regional or local authority buildings to mention just a few.

Where schools are concerned, there is a section of the site under construction called Horace

the Hotel, aimed at school children around the world. The purpose of this is not only to

provide environment-related games, but also to give environment teachers and others, ideas

for projects relating to their own school, to holiday resorts and to children’s attitudes to

environmental issues.
