Manaus Time: One hour behind BrasílaAverage Annual Temperature: 26ºCClimate: Equatorial HumidRainfall: December to MayAirports: Aeroporto Eduardo Gomes 16 Km from Down Town

Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas State in the North Region of Brazil, where the Amazon Forest is located.

Manaus became a famous city in the late 19th and beginning of 20th century due to the rubber boom (based on rubber production and shipment for decades).

The architecture of the city is a combination of European taste and wrought iron structures with Brazilian hardwoods. The best example of this can be found at Teatro Amazonas / Amazonas Opera House, Rio Negro Palace (formerly the Government Palace), the Customs Building, the Public Market and the city’s floating dock.

With the growing exposure of the Amazon Rain Forest abroad, Manaus became a natural gateway to the Amazon. Passengers use the pier of Manaus to reach the Amazon Forest, either cruising the Amazon rivers (in regional boats or in a luxury cruise-ship) or staying at the typical lodges inside the forest.

Life in this area is dictated by the high or low waters - high waters are from late May to November and low from December to May.

In the Amazon is still possible to visit the local communities, the “índios”, that were the first inhabitants of Brazil before the Portuguese colonizers arrival. These local communities have kept many traditions of their

ancestrals. The indians’ traditional food is staple food - the roots of the cassava used in many ways and prepared in the jungle in what is called the “Casa da Farinha” - the House Flour. Women spend most hours of the day processing the cassava while men go out to fish. There are more than 1500 species of fish in the area but the prize catches and delicious to eat are: pirarucu, tucunaré, tambaqui, just to name a few.

Amazon has a great variety of typical fruits, like: cupuaçu, açai, graviola and last but not least the famous Brazilian Nut coming from impressive 50m high trees.

In 1967 Manaus was made a free-trade zone and since that time the economy has really been bolstered. Manaus is a great city to go shopping because products are cheaper than any other city of Brazil.

Nowadays Manaus is a picturesque town filled with interesting sights and fabulous hiking trails. The jungle may be mysterious and daunting, but the city itself is friendly and inviting.

Manaus is rich in folklore manifestations. During the months of June and July, festivals are held throughout the city, exhibiting the cultural tendencies of the Amazon population. Among these manifestations are: quadrilhas caipiras (local type of square dance), Indian, northeastern

African dances; etc other folklore celebrations are also held outdoors in neighborhoods and in the school gyms.

Another popular celebration annually held is the Festa do Boi-Bumbá (The Bumbá Folk Festival), originated in the State of Maranhão and spread throughout Brazil. It has become a tourist attraction in the State of Amazonas, due thanks to the spectacular festival held in the island of Parintins, in the interior of the State.

Central do Artesanato Branco e Silva Wooden handcrafts, paintings and basketry.

FUNAI and Indigenous Market The indigenous handcrafts can be found at the National Foundation of the Indians, and in the “feira indígena” (indigenous market) that is located next door.

Amazonas Shopping Mall It is the biggest shopping mall of the north region. As Manaus is a free-trade zone, there we can find products cheaper than other cities of Brazil.

MAO 03 | FD Meeting of the waters

Full Day Meeting of the Waters (7 hours) – Water level dictates the pier to be used as departure for this tour. Boarding a typical regional boat. Sail to the Meeting of the Waters, 6 km south of Manaus where the waters of two rivers Negro and Solimões meet. At the meeting of these two rivers is where begins the famous Amazon river as everybody knows. The waters meet but do not mix due to the difference in temperature, velocity and water density as well as the Ph (acidity) factor.

The hydrographic basin of the Amazon is the world’s largest drained surface, covering an area of more than six million square kilometers, extending well beyond Brazil’s borders and containing more than 7,000 tributaries.

The Amazon river’s total length is 6.7 thousand kilometers and crosses the entire state of Amazonas. The river’s average annual rate of flow reaches around 200,000 cubic meters per second making it the largest liquid mass on the planet. Its volume is about four times that of the Congo and ten times that of the Mississippi rivers. With an

average width of 3.6 kilometers expanding to a maximum of 50 km during the rainy season, the Amazon produces a liter of water for every inhabitant on the planet every 28 seconds. Studies indicate that about half of this water returns to the atmosphere and directly influences the region’s ecosystem. Transporting to smaller canoes, tour members will be taken to visit Lake Janauary Ecological Park (water level permitting). A safe walkway takes tourists to visit the beautiful lily pad (Victoria Amazonica) that float on the lakes and when in full bloom can measure up to 1.8 meters in diameter. A typical lunch is served at the Floating Restaurant on Janauary lake.

Location | Ponta Negra beach opening to Negro river, one of the gateways to the Amazon jungle. It is 20 minutes from downtown and 10 minutes from the international airport.

The Amazon Rainforest

Making tourism in the Amazon is always an adventure! Wether in the islands, on the beaches or in the middle of the jungle. Emotion is everywhere!

The Amazon constitutes one of the last world-wide reserves of natural resources and one of the richest and most preserved ecosystems of the planet, especially for his biodiversities.

The Amazon region is one of few places of the planet where human primitive people still survive. The tribes are spread in territories inside the forest, maintaining his customs, languages and cultures unchanged for thousands of years. Anthropologists believe that still exist primitive unknown people, living in the most inhospitable and inaccessible regions.

The resultant impacts of the human exploration of the Amazon region are enormous. The deforestation for the formation of pastures for the cattle has been destroying immense areas of pure forests every year.

Therefore, the tourism emerges like one of the alternatives of sustainable development for the Amazon region, so, if planned well, it is able to minimize the environmental impacts, besides presenting a multiplying significant potential, in terms of generation of job and income.

The term rainforest describes forests that grow in constant humid conditions. They can occur whenever the annual rainfall is above 80 inches per year with high temperatures, which provides ideal environment for a diversity of plants to grow.

The Amazon Rainforest contains the largest area of tropical forest in the world. It covers 7 million square kilometers in 9 different countries (60% in Brazil). At first look, the Amazon forest seems to be rather uniform in physiognomy but in fact there are many typological variations and ample species diversity.

The forest canopy is frequently discontinuous, giving space for special ecological niches. At the heart of this region lies the huge Amazon River, the second longest watercourse of the world. The Amazon holds more than 18% of the planet’s fresh water, has at least 1,000 tributaries. The Rio Negro is its largest tributary.

The extraordinary wealth of plant and animal life in the Amazon basin has attracted explorers and scientists since the dawn of the 16th century. At least 30,000 out of 100,000 species of plants in Latin America are found in the Brazilian Amazon. The wildlife is equally diverse: there are thousands of creatures, amazingly different but each ideally suited for its particular way of life in the jungle. Clearly, this is a world of enormous fascination to everyone interested.
