• The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 996 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Trafford but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations

• GMTU Reports 996 & 996P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys

• Note that the GMATS survey points lie outside the Inner Relief Road - this was to ease the collecting of the data and maximise the use of the data for traffic model purposes The Key Centre monitoring points for the LTP lie inside the survey cordon

• This latter cordon extends to cover part of Salford and defines the Regional Key Centre used in this analysis

• With the exception of education where Bus accounted for 58% of trips, car dominated all activities– 56% work– 46% shopping– 47% leisure– 79% business– 69% personal

• 23% of car, 49% of bus trips ended within the district of Manchester

• 24% of car trips, 1% of bus trips and 9% of Metrolink trips ended outside Greater Manchester compared to 52% of rail trips

• 53% of car, 50% of bus, 45% of rail and 78% of Metrolink ended within the rest of Greater Manchester

• 26% of all trips ended in Manchester and 53% in the rest of GM

• For workers 20% of trips ended within Manchester and 59% in the rest of GM

• Those who had been at a place of education were most likely to finish their journeys within Manchester (52%)

• 21% of all Goods Vehicles had journeys which finished within Manchester and 22% outside GM

• Only 4% of commercial vehicles leaving the Key Centre were HGVs

• HGVs travelled 31.3 km on average compared to 16.3 km for LGVs and 20.4 km for MGVs

• All the previous slides have referred to trips starting in the Key centre. These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon

• In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included

• In the case of rail and Metrolink, only those trips which either start at one of the central stations or require an interchange at one of these stations are included, e.g. passengers travelling on trains from Sheffield to Liverpool were not surveyed unless they interchanged within the regional centre

• 65% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 21% by bus, 9% by rail and 5% by Metrolink

• 64% of car, 32% of bus and 3% of Metrolink trips finished within Manchester district

• ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 7% of trips

• The average distance travelled for cars was 17 Km, for buses 8 Km, Metrolink 20 km and for Rail 59 Km

• The longest average distances for all modes were ‘Home to employers business’ (56 Km) and ‘Employers business to home’ (55 Km)

• ‘Home to work’ trips averaged 17 Km by car, 11 Km by bus,17 Km by Metrolink and 41 Km by rail
