At the beginning of this year, Mano a Mano’s board of directors approved a three-year strategic plan (2016-2019) that sets the strategic vision for the organization in the coming years. The plan was the result of a six-month, community-based process that included gathering input from a variety of community stakeholders. As a result of this process, our strategic plan includes the following strategic directions: 1. Develop and maximize effectiveness and talent of our human capital 2. Cultivate our position as a thought leader and advocate 3. Secure our future: achieve financial stability and flexibility 4. Increase targeted marketing and communications efforts 5. Demonstrate our impact and establish guiding principles for growth 6. Obtain facilities that accommodate our needs

Our strategic plan process also provided the organizational leadership the opportunity to refine our vision statement, mission, and our organizational values.

Our Vision is an integrated Lake County where everyone has access to opportunity and paths to success. Our Mission is to empower immigrants and their families living in Lake County, Illinois to become full participants in American life. We achieve our mission by: • Providing support, building skills, and facilitating access to local community resources and opportunities • Acting as a hub for knowledge on issues relevant to the immigrant community; • Promoting best practices in providing culturally competent services; • Fostering leadership skills so that all of those who participate in our programs and services can play a role in promoting the advancement of themselves and their community; and • Influencing policies and decisions that impact immigrants and their families

Our organizational values are: collaboration and community building; education; excellence; equality of opportunity; stewardship; and respect for human dignity.

Mano a Mano has been a leader in proactively engaging and welcoming the growing numbers of immigrant families moving to Lake County since our inception in 2000. Between 2000 and 2016, Lake County’s overall population has grown by 9%, with the Latino population changing by 58% over time and the foreign-born population changing by 35%. Immigrants now make up almost one-fifth of the County’s population and live and work in every community in Lake County. Despite higher workforce participation rates than US-born peers, immigrant households in Lake County earn 20% less than households of US-born residents. As many immigrants in Lake County are very new to the US, they are more likely to have lower educational attainment, limited English skills, and limited access to and knowledge of healthcare services. Immigrants are moving to Lake County seeking opportunity and a better life. Mano a Mano is here to welcome new families and support them in achieving their American Dreams.

Dear Friends and Supporters:

This past year has been a test. It was a test for non-profits struggling in a state amid a multi-year budget crisis. It was a test for immigrant families and allies who saw some of the harshest anti-immigrant rhetoric and campaigning in recent history. It continued to be a test for working class families who still struggle to bounce back from the recession, to gain access to affordable healthcare, to finance higher education for their children, and to find a better job. It was in no doubt a test for Mano a Mano- a nonprofit serving some of the most vulnerable community members in time where many of our own friends, families, co-workers, and community members were unsure about their place or future in this community and country. Despite these tests and these challenges- with the support of hundreds of donors, volunteers, and supporters- Mano a Mano rose to the occasion.

This fiscal year 2016-2017 will likely go on the books as a record-breaking year for Mano a Mano for many reasons, which will be detailed further in this report. To highlight just a few of our significant accomplishments: • For the first time ever, Mano a Mano’s gross revenues surpassed $1,000,000 dollars, growing our overall annual revenues by 53% over the past three years. • Mano a Mano’s board and staff leadership approved an ambitious three-year strategy focused on strategic and sustainable growth. • Through strategic capacity-building and hiring, our leadership team expanded and our expertise grew in the fields of immigration legal services and health. • In an effort to respond to the growing needs across the County, we opened a satellite office in Zion and established community sites in Mundelein, Wauconda, and Highland Park. • After many years of policy advocacy, Mano a Mano and partner agencies from across the state helped to pass the Illinois TRUST Act, legislation making Illinois one of the most welcoming states for immigrant families.

We are very proud of these successes, but they are not just ours. Simply put, we couldn’t have done this without your support. Your volunteer hours, your donations- small and large, your encouraging words, your advocacy in important conversations, your confidence in our leadership, and your dedication to our community- these are the elements that fuel Mano a Mano’s success and growth. In the coming pages, you will see the real impact of our work and our major accomplishments over the past year.

We are forever grateful to all those who support, invest in, believe in, and advocate for Mano a Mano’s position within the community.

Sincerely,Megan McKenna Jim KinneyExecutive Director Board President

Our Healthy Families Program is designed to help immigrant families access the information and tools they need to live their healthiest lives. The Healthy Families team provides health case management at locations throughout Lake County, processing insurance and other health benefits applications and connecting families to other social services. Our Promotores de Salud educate community members in Spanish about disease management and prevention and how to access health resources. Mano a Mano also offers opportunities for healthy living through our monthly free health screenings, community garden, and Zumba classes.

Success in early childhood education is essential to long-term academic success. Due to limited resources, there are many children in our community that do not have the opportunity to attend preschool or access to other early childhood education resources. For those little ones, Mano a Mano’s Successful Children Program is available to help fill the gap. Focused on developing core kindergarten readiness skills, our program provides the tools and resources pre-kindergartners need to start kindergarten ready to succeed. Our early childhood education team also provides practical and moral support to parents so that they are empowered to be their child’s first teacher.

As a non-profit organization, we have seen a difficult financial environment in the past few years. With the right foresight years ago, Mano a Mano has been very focused on resource development

and diversification. In these difficult times, because of our planning and prudence, Mano a Mano has thrived and grown its programming.
