TO THE STUDENTEach year the Manufacturing Chemists Asso-

ciation receives many requests from students forinformation on careers not only in chemistry butalso in othee 'sCierices, We have prepared thisbooklet as an attempt to help you find the publi-cation you need as you plan your career.

We hope that this guide not only acqucinte youwith the literature available but also encouragesyou to initiate contacts with the men and womenwho have chosen the career which now attractsyou. Your own career planning will lead you tocounselors and descriptive booklets. In addition,we believe you should visit laboratories, indus-trial plants, etc., to talk with men and womenwho have found success and personal fulfillmentin these fields; visit colleges and universities totalk with the students who are preparing them-selves for a career. Since you will pursue yourcareer in society, ask people in other walks oflife for their image of the profession which nowattracts you. "Sources of Career Information inScientific Fields" serves you well if it initiatessuch a orocess of inquiry.

We hope also that your curiosity will lead youto the further question: What is a car_,w.7 ireare ro mans, anings an,, connotetic pi.ion, job. The words andcon cepts can be confusing. A career in scienceis much more than the kind of job which requiresver: specialized and often static skills and train-ing; it can be less than a vocation or irrevocablecommitment to one state of life or course ofaction. Those who are professional scientists are--involved in research, development, administra-tion, teaching, marketing, production, pollutioncontrol, politics, government, military, church, eic.; many individuals have developed excitingcareers through the creative interchange of theseinvolvements. At the present time (1971) the jobshortace in science and technology is a sourceof discouragement for many highly-qualified stu-ders; man fee however, that the shortage maybe tempora.y and that even now there are manyoppoEonities if cne is willing to "develop a con-fidence and a motivation toward applying hisknow i-dge 'n a broader sphere of man's en-deavc-s,"*

ThiF guide is by no means exhaustive. A morecomp ehenbive publication, Keys to Careers in
