Broken jaw ignored, says accused teen
APitt Meadows mother isoutraged that her 17-year-oldson was in police custody for
more than 10 hours with a jaw brokenin two places without receivingmedical treatment for his injuries.
Jennifer, who can’t be identifiedby her last name because her son isa young offender, has filed a formalcomplaint with the B.C. AmbulanceService and the RCMP about theincident. The TIMES is using Kevinas a pseudonym for the 17-year-old,who can’t be named.
Kevin was taken to police cellsat around 4 a.m. on June 27 and
charged with four counts of assaultwith a weapon for allegedly usingmace on a group of four people. Hesaid that while he was in the policecar a paramedic looked at himthrough the window of the policecar. He was cleared and taken tothe cells at the local detachment.Kevin said he began yelling andbanging on his cell, spitting bloodand repeatedly demanding anambulance.
At around 8 a.m. a paramedicchecked Kevin out in the cells.Kevin said the paramedic toldpolice that he only had a cut lip.
After the paramedic left, Kevincontinued to demand medicalattention.
“It hurt quite a bit. I kept yellingand kept hitting the door and I saidI need an ambulance and they keptignoring me,” saidKevin. “They weretreating me like Ididn’t matter.”
Kevin didn’treceive any medicaltreatment until hewas released from jailat around 2:30 p.m.
Kevin’s grandfather, who has jointcustody of his grandson, took himto a walk-in clinic and they weretold he needed to go to the hospitalbecause he had a broken jaw. Kevinwas hospitalized overnight and hadto have his jaw wired shut.
“His face was swollen out to here.He looked horrible,” said Jennifer.
“I just think that somebody has tobe held accountable.I understand thatmy son was not incells under the bestof circumstances andI’m aware of that,”she said.
However, sheadded that “he’s
underage, he’s locked up in a celland they’re responsible for him...As police officers they still have theobligation to listen to my son whenhe requests medical attention.”
She said he was “treated like ananimal, not being helped.”
Ridge Meadows RCMP InspectorDerren Lench said that at the timeof his arrest Kevin complained therewas blood coming from his mouth.
However, Lench said Kevin was so“intoxicated and belligerent in theback of the police car we couldn’t lethim out of there for the ambulanceattendants to actually treat himin person. They had to do a lookthrough from outside the vehicle,”said Lench. He said when paramedicscame to check him out in the cells“his main complaint” was a cut lipand the paramedics determined hewas “fit to remain (in cells) anddidn’t have to go to the hospital.”
“The Pinetree became a
problem within a period of about
two months.”

Maple Ridge woman suing over G20 woundsA20-year-old Maple Ridge woman who claims
she was shot twice with a rubber bullet whileprotesting in Toronto last month is suing the
Toronto police, CBC News reported Sunday.Natalie Gray said she was shot once in the chest
and once just above her left elbow.“I was in a lot of pain,” Gray told The TIMES in
a story that ran on July 2. “Generally the officersdidn’t seem to care or take note of how injured Iwas.”
Police deny they shot rubber bullets at the groupof about 150 protesters, who were marching in apolice-approved route to a temporary jail set up ina former film studio on June 28, the last day of the
G20 conference of world leaders. Photos allegedlytaken by an emergency room doctor show brightred welts on the woman’s chest and elbow.
Gray said she feared for her safety after twogroups of police moved into the crowd about ahalf-hour after the protesters arrived outside thejail.
Gray said she backed away down a side street. Then she saw a police officer drop down to oneknee and take aim at her with a large gun.
She said a fellow protester heard a police officersingle her out by her blue hair colour.
The first shot hit her in the chest and knockedher down, Gray told CBC News. The second hit her
elbow and tore off a piece of skin.As she tried to get up, uniformed police moved
in, pushed her face into the pavement and knelt onher back, she said.
“I have never been so terrified in my life,” shesaid. “I immediately lost control of my bladder andthe officers are yelling at me, ‘Stop resisting, stopresisting.’ And I’m saying, ‘I’m not resisting. Pleasebe gentle. Please be careful.’”
Gray was later charged with obstructing a peaceofficer. Police claimed the shots were not rubberbullets but “muzzle blasts” -- harmless blanksmeant to scare protesters, not hurt them.

Doctors accepting newpatients shouldn’t turn awaythose suspected of doctorshopping for sleeping pills, pain medications and othercontrolled substances, saysthe College of Physicians andSurgeons of B.C.
“Even given a history ofprescription drug misuse, the College would have tobe critical of a physicianfor refusing to see a newpatient solely on the basisof such conduct with otherphysicians,” the college saysin a bulletin to doctors.
College registrar Dr. HeidiOetter said some patientshave complained that theyare being discriminatedagainst by doctors or
clinics because of theirmedication histories gleanedfrom the PharmaNetsystem. The databasetracks every prescriptiondispensed in B.C. -- about50 million annually.Community drugstores, hospital pharmacies andemergency departments andmedical offices can accessmedications patients havebeen prescribed. The systemis meant to improve careand safety. In the case ofpharmacies and hospitals, there is an implied consent. But in the case of doctors’offices, patients must signa consent form. The collegehas not yet had to disciplineany doctors for snooping
or “surfing” the database,Oetter said. Pharmacies firstgot access to the PharmaNetsystem in 1995. Emergencydepartments were givenaccess in 1999 and doctorsoffices were linked into thesystem in 2006. In additionto the PharmaNet access, thecollege has a red flag systemin which it sends an alertto all the doctors who haveprescribed medications to apatient who has seen at leastfive different doctors in theprevious month.
Oetter said that doesn’tpresume the medicationsobtained through suchappointments were under“false pretences.”

One of the first thingsa newcomer toMaple Ridge district
will notice is that “MapleRidge” is not the only namein use. Other frequentlyheard names are Haney,Hammond, Whonnock,Webster’s Corners, Ruskin,Albion, and Yennadon. Theserefer to the original historicneighbourhoods, each ofwhich once had its own postoffice and community centrethat included stores, schools, churches and halls.
WHY DID THEY CALL IT MAPLERIDGE?
One of the earliestEuropean settlers in thedistrict was John McIver,a Scot, who homesteadedthe land now known as theMaple Ridge Golf Course. Ashis property incorporated afine ridge topped by Mapletrees, McIver called his farm“Maple Ridge”.
By 1874, several smallcommunities had sprung up,consisting of a few familieseach, on the north side ofthe Fraser River in the areasthat would become Haney,Hammond, Pitt Meadows,Whonnock, Albion, Ruskinand Webster’s Corners. Oneof the problems of small, isolated communities is thatthey tend to stay small andisolated unless some meansis found to build roadsbetween them.
It was with this problemin mind that a group offorward-thinking mengathered at McIver’s farmto discuss incorporatingthe whole district betweenthe Pitt River and the Staveto allow taxation for roadbuilding. The name forthe district was taken fromMcIver’s farm and so we
became “Maple Ridge” in1874.
THE COMMUNITY POST OFFICESWhen the district
incorporated in 1874, thetotal population was about20 families with the majoritylocated between Hammondand Kanaka Creek. Theclosest thing to a centrewas the area that is now thefoot of Laity Street where itmeets River Road. This iswhere the first post officewas established in 1876with the name “Maple RidgePost Office”. All settlers hadto travel to this location toget their mail, likely via theDewdney Trunk which wasthe first trail/road to traversethe district.
In 1885, the completionof the CPR caused thecommunity to rethink thelocation of their post office. It no longer made sense tohave it up on the ridge whenit could be near the railway.Three new post offices wereopened that year in Haney,Hammond and Whonnock. The Maple Ridge post officewas closed at that pointand there wasn’t one ofthat name again until 1970when Canada Post closed thesmall offices in favour of onecentral one in the downtowncore.
The first post office locatedaway from the river bankwas opened at Webster’sCorners in 1891. Post MasterJames Murray Webster hadto walk to the Haney Stationto get the mail and then carryit back to Corners. Ruskin’spost office opened in 1898.
In 1907, Albion got a newname along with its postoffice. Formerly knownas East Haney, this wasnot distinctive enough for
the postal service and soresidents were asked tocome up with a new name. The last post office in thedistrict opened in 1911 andalso required the adoptionof a new name. The areawe know as Yennadonwas formerly called SouthLillooet.
FULL CIRCLE: BACK TO MAPLERIDGE
There was a series ofmajor controversies overpostal name changes whichreflect how important theold neighbourhoods were totheir citizens. In the 1950s,considerable conflict arosein Hammond when residentswere informed that the priceof door-to-door delivery wasthe indignity of having tochange their postal addressto “Haney, B.C.” where thesorting station was located. The final solution was tochange “Haney” to “MapleRidge” as the more neutralname.
As postal districts becamelarger and door-to-doordelivery from a centralstation more common, all thelocal postal addresses weregradually taken under theumbrella of “Maple Ridge”.The name of the first andmost short-lived local postaladdress [which had onlyapplied to the area aroundthe foot of Laity Street whenfirst established] was to beapplied to the whole districtas of 1970.
While “Maple Ridge” wascertainly less contentiousthan having “Haney”imposed over the entire area,we still see the WhonnockPost Office strugglingto retain its own name.Whonnock is the last ruralpost office in the Fraser
Valley to retain its postmasterand original name.

Political pundits typically refer to the summermonths as the “barbecue season.” This is inreference to politicians touring the land and
taking their turns flipping burgers andwieners at fairs, rodeos, picnics andother community gatherings where theyattempt to press the flesh and show howdown-to-earth they are.
Almost every serving politicianof every party engages in this long-established summertime ritual. But thecombination of barbecue and politickingis hardly a Canadian original.
It’s as American a tradition as, well, barbecue. George Washington wrote ofhis attendance at barbecue events asearly as 1770.
Horseshoes were thrown, pigs wereslow smoked, and there was music and dancing. Itwas the most efficient way to meet people and makeconnections. In 1793, Washington’s team serveda 500-pound barbecued ox at the nation’s capital.Supporters, detractors and the undecided lined up forblocks.
Barbecue has long been an essentialcomponent of U.S. electioneering.Presidents, senators, governors and ahost of others have long relied on thelure of slow cooked ribs and hickorysmoke in the air to rally the base.
Lyndon Baines Johnson was sofamous for having hosted so many starspangled barbecues that his personalcaterer published the LBJ Barbecue Cookbook.
Jimmy Carter brought a good old-fashioned Georgiawhole hog barbecue with him wherever the campaigntrail led.
Both the Bush presidents hosted annualcongressional barbecues during their terms in office. When George W. was first elected to the White Househe hired the owner of Cooper’s Old Time Pit Barbecuein Texas to cater his victory celebration.
When Barack Obama was campaigning to be
the Democrat nominee his team made a point ofdropping in on some of the most revered BBQ jointsin the country, including one of my very favourites,
the Iron Works in Austin.Barbecue, politics and campaigning
have essentially been inseparable forhundreds of years and it’s a traditionand strategy that has reaped many adividend.
Canadian political strategists have longlooked to the U.S. for campaign lessons, although some will defiantly deny doingso.
The summertime barbecue meet andgreet is one of the very best tricks of thetrade so it stands to reason it has been afixture in this country for many years. So I ask, why not do it up proper?
Instead of flipping pre-made, frozen patties with theartificial grill marks painted on them, why not serveup real barbecue? I’ve been to my share of politicalevents in the summer months that indicated theword “BBQ” on the invite. But thus far, I have yet to
see anything even resembling actualbarbecue. Sorry folks, but processedpatties and hot dogs aren’t going to dothe trick.
There is something almostsacrilegious about taking such a time-honoured tradition and turning it into ajunk food parody of what it should be.
The political-barbecue connectionis all about showing how real and
genuine the candidate is.These events are an opportunity to meet the
person, not the manufactured, public image. So ifgenuineness is what these gatherings are after, let’shave some genuine barbecue served up. Ribs, brisket, sausage coils and pulled pork sandwiches.
Or should that be pulled pork-barrel sandwiches?John Martin is a criminologist at the University of the Fraser

Port Coquitlam Provincial Court JudgePedro de Couto has given us a lot to thinkabout in sentencing Colin Moore, convicted ofchoking a female bus driver in Maple Ridgeso hard he lifted her right out of her seat.
As he was going through his reasons forthe sentence he chose, he addressed theother bus drivers sitting in the courtroom. The victim wasn’t there because, well, she’stoo traumatized and doesn’t know whenshe’ll even get back to work.
“The courts in a criminal setting are nothere to seek vengeance...The courts have toact impartially in a balanced and fair wayand take a position that’s just and fair in thecircumstances.”
That makes sense. It’s a laudable sentimentthat many should consider when criticizingthe justice system.
Except that the bus drivers, at least theones interviewed outside the court room byThe TIMES, didn’t want vengeance.
They want a deterrent.And they didn’t get one.Moore only got a three-month conditional
sentence — served as house arrest for amonth and then with a curfew — with ninemonths of probation.
Meanwhile, his victim will likely suffer foryears to come. As for other bus drivers, theywanted to a message sent to all the otherpeople who assault them on a daily basis.
Bus drivers face this scourge all the time, from being spat on to yelled at to punchedand kicked, and even worse. They are fed upwith being vulnerable to attack. Somebodygoing to jail might have helped their cause, but we won’t know after this case.
Toughen up tax rulesThey say you can’t cross a chasm in two
small jumps, but it appears that hasn’tstopped our government from trying.
As reported in the Globe and Mail, theCanada Revenue Agency is preparing toloosen the rules around voluntary disclosurefor big-time tax dodgers.
The new regulations will reportedly allowCanadians with secret offshore accounts tofess up at less expense, with only the past10 years of undeclared earnings open toscrutiny by tax collectors.
The move will bring Canada’s tax lawsmore in line with those in the United States— but it only goes half the distance.
Unlike our southern neighbour, which hasbeen turning the screws on Swiss banks, forcing them to turn in their tax-dodgingclients, Canada is doing nothing to drive theerrant well-to-do into the open.
Without that component, the plan is oflittle value. Why would cheaters volunteerto pay a decade of back taxes when there isno greater risk of discovery now than therewas when they started? The new rule simplymeans the few who are foolish enough to getcaught won’t pay as stiff a penalty as theywould have otherwise.
If the federal government ever wants tosee its lost revenue, it will have to produce acane in addition to this new carrot.

Off-road usertrashes pristine
wilderness
Editor:In recent days another off-
road vehicle user has electedto vandalize property alongthe north end of 256th Streetnear the Justice Institute, inorder to gain access to localriding trails (See the photo onthis page). It hasbecome apparentthat someoff-road usershave a totaldisregard foreither private orpublic property.Recreationalusers of BlueMountain shouldbe up in armsover this typeof destructivebehaviour.
The hardwork being done by groups, such as the Blue MountainMotorcycle Club, whosemembers are attempting toimprove, protect and cleanup the trails, and thosecompanies trying to developand attract industry to thearea has been a wastedeffort.
Maybe it is time to revisitthe closure of Blue Mountainto any form of motorizedvehicles — a better choicehowever would be foremployees of the responsiblegoverning bodies to get outof their offices and enforceexisting laws and statutesand penalize the offenders.
There is legislation in forceto deal with this — startdealing with it.

Renters don’t careabout homes
Editor:Re: Neighbours demand
too much, TIMES Mailbag,July 23
As a responsible and cleanhomeowner taking pridein our family home, weunfortunately live betweentwo rented homes that are
nothing less than sad. These lazy neighbours are
irresponsible people livingon either side of my well-maintained/manicured yard. They are lethargic in keepingup their homes to make theneighbourhood look nice, asboth properties have exteriorvinyl siding homes and aredisgustingly filthy with cakedlayers of dust on their sidingthat makes it look drab as ithas not been powerwashedfor years.
I feel that the City ofPitt Meadows shouldmake a bylaw wherebyit is compulsory for bothhomeowners and rentersto maintain their propertyto acceptable cosmeticstandards. There are noexcuses, as they could hiresomeone to wash the exteriorsiding of their home or dotheir part to water the lawnthat adjoins ours. We live inSouth Pitt Meadows and thisis a nice area. There are goodproperty owners and a fewbad ones as there are goodrenters and lazy ones. We arejust lucky.
The bottom line is do someyard work whether you ownor rent, as these homes arean unsightly blemish onwell-maintained ones.
The landlords should becontacted to inform themthat their property is notmaintained to acceptablestandards. It’s like puttingone nice car between twodirty ones on a car lot forsale. I am sorry to say thatforeign land owners need toget on top of their projects, just not sit on their backsidesand collect the rent. If therenters cannot do somesimple maintenance andupkeep then boot them
out and bring in moreresponsible people whowill respect the homesand neighbours and hire aproperty management team.
Unfortunately, we wereone of the first buyers in thisfairly new development anddid not foresee renters takingover. You cannot choose yourneighbours but that shouldnot let them off the hook.Shame on them for not evendoing basic yard work andhouse washing with bothmaking good incomes.
If I ever won the lottery,I would kick their sorrybacksides out and managethese properties properlywith responsible people. It is sad that some blighton a tree makes the wholetree look bad. For these twoneighbours, get off yourbacks and do some work, like shovelling snow in thewinter instead of relyingon good Samaritans to savethe day and make your lifeeasier by sliding into theshovelled out spaces you aretoo lazy to get out there anddo your share. Get out andpowerwash your exteriorof the home and send thebill to the landlord butdo something rather thannothing. Be a neighbour, nota nuisance, and open youreyes to see that your lazinessaffects others.

Cops should stakeout pubs for
impaired drivers
Editor:Re: On the hunt for
impaired drivers, TIMES,July 23
A most interesting article.I am wondering why the
RCMP are sneaking around? Why don’t they go to thesource? Why don’t they parktheir cruisers on the streetoutside the parking areasof the local pubs? This will
become even easier whenthey have the right to pullover a driver at random andcheck them for alcohol. Andwow, zero tolerance willempty those parking lots.
Future historians will bemystified by our hypocrisywhen they see that weallowed/required pubsand restaurants to provideparking for their patrons, then penalize them for usingthis facility.
Bruce WilsonMaple Ridge
Editor’s Note: The articledoes say that local RCMPstage checkpoints nearcertain bars and that theowners of said bars are notappreciative, according to thepolice.
Nurses a dream
Editor:I am writing with regards
to an incident that took placeon July 14. My daughter, who was pregnant at thetime, had to be induced dueto gestational diabetes.
After the inductionprocedure the nurses monitorthe patient for one hour andif nothing transpires theyare sent home. During thisprocess she went into labour, and delivered her baby in thewashroom of Ridge MeadowsHospital.
Our concern right now isthat closing our local hospitalmaternity ward would meanthat our expectant motherswould have to go elsewhereto deliver babies, and afterthis experience I certainlywould not want to see thishappen to other youngmothers.
Of course all was well withmom and baby. My daughterwas in labour for all of anhour and a half, if not forthe maternity ward in thehospital would they have hadto send her and her babe toanother hospital for aftercare.

Ann Blackwell and TammyRoutley met in 2003, duringthe spring Art Studio Tour, when Ann opened herhome studio to the public. They connected right away, sharing a playful, inquisitiveapproach to their art-making.
So when Ann asked Tammyto join her in an exhibitionthis summer, Tammy agreedenthusiastically.
Ann is a mixed mediaartist, currently focusing
on beadwork and doll-making. She is also creatinga “Mandala of Friends” forthis show. Tammy worksin illustration, combininghand-drawn images withcomputer colouring. Shemakes puzzles, cards, andmagnets.
The name of the show isderived from Lewis Carroll’sword “frabjous” in theJabberwocky poem (“ohfrabjous day” being the
day that the jabberwockyis slain). Looking forsomething with a few moresyllables, they soon found“frabjabulous” in the UrbanDictionary, and it stuck.❚ Visit New Creations Art

Garden Talk
AnneAnneMarrisonMarrison
In the early years of gardening many of ustreat deadheading as a casual stroll wherewe can hold a cup of coffee (or
glass of wine) in one hand andpick off spent flowers with theother.
But later, dead-heading canbecome so much more. Forcontainer gardeners in summer,dead-heading is also a chance tocheck for pests that can quicklybecome epidemic in hot, dryconditions. Taking a few secondsto check underneath three orfour dubious-looking leaves canreveal spider mites or whiteflybefore their numbers becomeoverwhelming.
All annuals bloom longer if dead-headedregularly and if annuals grown for foliagehappen to flower, it’s usually best todeadhead them early. Many foliage plants(coleus is one) have insignificant flowers andif they’re allowed to make seed the foliageoften deterioriates.
Some perennials will re-bloom if cut backimmediately after the first flush of bloom. This includes many hardy geraniums, lupins, snapdragons, Verbena bonariensis, yarrowand alchemilla (Ladies Mantle).
Once summer is well under way, gardenersmay consider neglecting some of thedeadheading to provide seedheads for driedarrangements in winter. The hardy annualLove-in-a-Mist (Nigella) with its seedheadsof red-striped green globes is beautiful invases. Its seed is easy to save and scatter infall for next year’s display. But seed-headsthat look so good in garden beds or winterarrangements can be a real trap for gardenerswho already have quite enough dandelionsor buttercups to weed-out and don’t needthousands of volunteer hellebores/teasels/camas/ornamental grasses as well.
The key is to watch the seedheads and
cut the unwanted ones out before they getclose to shedding seed. Gardeners who want
short-lived perennials to persistin their garden should alwaysallow a little self-seeding.Columbines and foxgloves fallinto this group. But foxglovesneed to be cut back beforethey turn into an ugly longpole crowned by a little tuft offlowers.
Cutting almost the wholestalk, but leaving a few inchesof seed capsules at the baseof the flower spike ensures amanageable amount of seed toscatter where you want more
foxgloves. Some rampant self-seeders needfinesse and extra time if seeding is to bestopped while allowing the flower display isto continue. This means older florets shouldbe snipped out frequently because they willproduce and drop seed while the youngerflorets are still in early bloom. There areothers such as Hellebore foetidus and H.orientalis for instance which ripen suddenlyand shed seed shockingly fast. Others wherethe seed-head opening faces firmly upwardcan be left longer before deadheading.
By early fall, wildlife-loving gardeners stopdeadheading perennials, which produceseed that birds like. This includes rudbeckia, echinacea and some of the verbascums(mulliens). Some seedheads also make agood shelter for beneficial insects over thewinter. Deadheading is very important forspring bulbs because the energy they useto produce seed is stolen from next spring’sflower display. But alliums seem to handlecutting well. In fact, Allium christophiiseedheads can decorate the garden tillautumn rain and wind topples them.
Anne Marrison is happy to answergarden questions. Send them to her [email protected].

Kwon putts his way to gold medal
Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows mastered the challenging Redwoods Golf Course Saturday to take the boys goldmedal at the B.C. Summer Games.
Kwon, the reigning 2009 B.C. Juvenile Boys’ champion, shot a six-under 65 from the blues on a course noted forits narrow fairways lined with the trees that gave the course its name.
“I think that’s the best I’ve ever played,” said Kwon who left Langley immediately after the medal ceremoniesto catch a flight to New Mexico, where he will be playing in the prestigious Boys Junior Americas Cup. “I tried tofocus on what I had to do. I put the ball in the right places most of the time.
“Winning here is definitely uplifting, going into the Americas Cup.”Kwon said the difference between his first round Friday, when he shot a leading one over par, and Saturday’s
round was his putting.Asked if he had fun, Kwon said, “It’s hard not to have fun when you are playing that well.”A contingent of 61 players, aged 12 to 16 from eight different zones, teed up at the Redwoods Golf club to
compete in the B.C. Mixed Zone Team and Individual boys and girls categories at the Township of Langley 2010B.C. Summer Games. ❚
The young golfer is off to New Mexico after his win at the B.C. Summer Games lastweek in Langley.

Five Ridge Meadows players fromthe Fraser Valley North Baseball– Cole Stovman, Tarin Richardson(above), Matthew Strother, BayleyGermain, Cole Johnson – took partin the B.C. Summer Games andwon a bronze medal by beatingVictoria Island 3-2 in a thriller. Thegame was tied at the bottom of theseventh with two outs, when a basehit to third scored the winning run.
Even more nerve-racking was thesemifinal game where our boysplayed in a nail-biter that rockedback and forth for more than threehours. Unfortunately for Fraser Val-ley North they lost a heartbreakerin the bottom of the ninth with afinal score of 8-7 to Fraser RiverDelta – the team that ultimatelywon the gold medal.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles?
Then you'll love Sudoku.This mind-bending puzzle
will have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpen
your pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy
to the test!
Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
