Graduation 2011
Students given Cinderella-style gradFour teens arrived at Planet Icefor their graduation on Saturdayin a unique, horse-drawn coach.by Ronda [email protected]
It was an odd sight to beholdwhen a horse-drawn pumpkin car-riage drove through the streets ofAlbion this weekend.
Maple Ridge Secondary graduatesBriana Halford, Karolina Fedorow,Amy Hall, and Rheann Smart, arrived in the Cinderella-like coachfor their graduation dinner at PlanetIce late Saturday afternoon.
Onlookers were in awe as thewhite iron carriage, was drivenby Halford’s uncle, Gerry O’Neil –owner of Stanley Park Horse-drawnTours.
Upon arrival, the girls were met bytheir fathers.
Andrea Halford, Briana Halford’smother, noted Briana wanted toshare the carriage with her friends,“she made it special for them.”
The carriage was purchased inQuebec by O’Neil as a gift for hisown daughters. With white iron, gold plush seats and even a clearplastic cover, it is an unusual site.
A number of unique vehiclesdropped graduates off at the celebra-tion, but Halford and her friendswere the only ones to arrive byhorse power.

Cooler temperatures have resulted in a“slow and steady” snow melt.by Maria [email protected]
The rain may seem endless to BritishColumbians who are used to warmerweather by this time of the year, butthe extra downpours have not raisedthe flood risk on the Fraser River above“average.”
However, the District of Maple Ridgeis warning residents that the flow of theFraser River, Kanaka Creek, and AlouetteRiver is faster at this time of year, and
anyone on the water for either commer-cial or recreational purposes should beextra careful and use life jackets.
The rivers can be challenging even forstrong swimmers as the current is fastand there is a lot of debris in the water.
The District of Maple Ridge and theCity of Pitt Meadows are both monitoringthe river levels at this time of the year towatch for any possible flood situations.
Ike de Boer, engineering servi-ces coordinator with the City of PittMeadows, said he is not worried at all bythe water levels, but he checks and rec-ords the situation daily.
The electronic gauge in Missionshowed, as of Monday morning, that the
water level in the Fraser River was at 5.61metres, up by only 30 millimetres fromlast week.
“It’s just about flat,” de Boer said. The snow pack this year was high, but
the cooler temperatures haven’t resultedin it melting quickly, which can causeflooding.
“The snow melt is slow and steady,” deBoer said.
In addition to the Mission gauge, which has been in place since the late1800s, the District of Maple Ridge checkswater along the entire dike system. TheDistrict is also watching Wharf Street inHammond as it is outside the diking area.• More online at www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Aboriginal education leaderbrought First Nations cultureto the forefront in schools.
by Maria [email protected]
Ten carving projects are takingplace in schools across MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows andthe end result will be 10 hand-carved poles that will adorn localschools.
The poles are symbolic of thework Doug Hoey has done asprincipal of aboriginal educationfor the past five years.
“The universal reaction (tocarving) is a calming effect– how peaceful, how relaxing,”Hoey said. “Carving can be dif-ficult but what a wonderful wayto relieve some stress.”
“The poles really representeverthing I’ve tried to do overthe last five years.”
But carving poles is about morethan destressing – it’s about cre-ating a visible presence of FirstNations culture in the schooldistrict.
Hoey will be retiring at the endof June, and for his five yearsof service to the First Nationsstudents in the Maple Ridge-PittMeadows school district, Hoeywas blanketed and honouredat the Aboriginal AchievementAwards ceremonies recently.
Currently, there are about1,050 self-identified aboriginalstudents in the school district– the number has been climbingsteadily in the past five years.
Before he retires, the first poleto be finished will be raised atEdith McDermott Elementary. It has taken about two years tocarve it, but that was the originalintention, Hoey said.
Working with aboriginal youthin the school district is slow, steady work, and the resultscan’t been seen instantly – Hoeylikens it to working on a polecarving project.
“It’s not a quick turn around,”he said. “Anything that’s worth-while, takes a while [to do].”
In addition to starting severalcultural projects – and convin-cing the school district to hirean aboriginal cultural worker– Hoey was instrumental in mak-ing sure the third AboriginalEnhancement Agreement signeda year ago included a culturalcomponent as a key goal .
Making First Nations studentsproud of their heritage is key tokeeping them engaged at schooland improving their success.
To improve the graduationrates of aboriginal students– which in SD42 is 62 per cent, higher than the provincial aver-age which is 50.4 per cent – thework has to begin in the earlygrades, Hoey said.
Hoey has also seen programsput in place for students in sev-eral grades to raise awarenessabout aboriginalculture.
In Grades 4 and5, students workon the My Storyproject whichhighlights theirfamily historyand that of non-aboriginal stu-dents as well.
Grade 6 aborig-inal children areinvited to partici-pate in an IBM-sponsored IgniteCamp, a weeklongexploration of science and tech-nology, and Grade 7 students willjoin in this year as Ignite alumni.
Grade 8 to 12 students at allthe secondary schools includingConnex also have the opportun-ity to participate in pole carvingor other carving projects.
In Grades 8 to 11, aboriginalstudents are involved in leader-ship activities including anannual conference in Langleycalled “Strengthening the Circle.”Hoey also started an aboriginalcareer fair last year.
If aboriginal students make itto Grade 12, they have the samesuccess rate as other students– but the hard work is in the ear-lier years to keep them engagedin school and not dropping out intheir early teens.
Under Hoey’s leadership, theschool district held a communityforum on aboriginal educationwhich was attended by Lt.-Gov.Steven Point and his wife GwenPoint.
Hoey said the most importantlegacy he leavesbehind is a strongaboriginal sup-port team, andstudents whofeel proud to beaboriginal.
Hoey has adoctorate in edu-cation and hastaught part-timeat several univer-sities.
However, histraining to workwith aborig-inal youth came
largely from his work in theinner-city areas of Winnipeg, hishometown.
He worked at ArgyleAlternative School as an adminis-trator and counsellor, and at theManitoba Adolescent TreatmentCentre where he sat on theintake-assessment team.
But based on childhood mem-ories from a family trip whenhe was eight, Hoey moved toMission where he continues tolive with his wife in a log houseon four-and-a-half acres by a
mountain.He worked in the Abbotsford
school district before becom-ing a counsellor at GaribaldiSecondary.
Five years ago he was appoint-ed district principal of aboriginaleducation.
District superintendent JanUnwin said one of Hoey’s big-gest achievements has been thesigning of the third AboriginalEnhancement Agreement and theLocal Education Agreement, butalso the relationships he has builtto allow these agreements tocome to fruition.
“Doug’s ability to work col-laboratively with people and tomotivate people has led us toexcellence in building cultureand pride with the aboriginalcommunity,” Unwin said, call-ing Hoey a “great educator” whohas forged new roads with theaboriginal community.
“There is an aboriginal culturepresence in all of our schoolsincluding our board office and heis responsible for that,” Unwinsaid.
Students in the school districthave benefited from Hoey’s“forward thinking, his passionfor excellence, and his commit-ment to building a solid teamto provide exemplary service tothe aboriginal community,” sheadded.
Hoey said he’s tried to live hislife by the motto “Go big or gohome,” and thinks that over thepast five years the AboriginalEducation Department has gonebig, and now it is time for him togo home.
Doug Hoey, principalof aboriginaleducation, wassurrounded byaboriginal supportworkers at arecent AboriginalAchievement Awardsceremony where hewas honoured andblanketed for hisfive years of service. He will be retiringat the end of thisschool year.

A Maple Ridge couple who suedTransLink for compensation after the newGolden Ears Bridge was built over theirriverfront home has reached an out-of-court settlement with the transportationauthority.
Shirley and Andy Sasiadek will remainin their home under the deal, but nofurther details of the settlement werereleased.
The couple sued the South Coast B.C.Transportation Authority and the B.C.Transportation Financing Authority for
the noise, pollution, and invasion of pri-vacy caused by the $800-million bridge, which opened in 2009.
They claimed the construction of thebridge and the noise of constant trafficonce the bridge opened had “caused con-siderable degradation of the use, enjoy-ment and value of their property by vir-tue of its intrusive physical presence...,”according to a writ filed in 2009.
The Sasiadeks were not initiallyoffered anything for their troubles, withTransLink saying the new bridge wasbuilt along the neighbouring right-of-wayand the Sasiadeks didn’t qualify for com-pensation.
TransLink met with the couple aboutpossible compensation after the bridgewas built, but the Sasiadeks decided toseek damages under the ExpropriationAct because they wanted to stay in thehome where they have lived for 34 years.

Half-marathon hopeful Stephen Jackson checked out the Reykjavik Marathon website.
A Maple Ridge man who has livedwith diabetes for the past 30 yearsis running in Iceland this summer toraise funds in support of research forthe disease.
by Troy [email protected]
Admittedly, Stephen Jackson isn’t whatyou’d call a world traveller.
But later this summer, the married, 52-year-old father of four and grandfather of
two is flying to a place that isn’t, by mostpeople’s standards, synonymous with thephrase “tourist Mecca.”
On Aug. 20, Jackson hopes to find hisfeet – snugly fit into running shoes, nodoubt – in Iceland, the European islandcountry in the North Atlantic Ocean, forthe 2011 Reykjavik Marathon.
Jackson plans to run a half marathon asa member of Team Diabetes, and, whenhe isn’t literally pounding the pavementtraining on roads near his Maple Ridgehome, he’s aggressively fundraising forthe Canadian Diabetes Association.
He recalls spending an entire Saturdaysearching for support and sponsorship.

…continued from page A6“By the end of the day it was like,
‘Shoot!’” Jackson said. “You feel bad, because you didn’t get a chance to train.”
Each team member is required to raise aminimum of $6,100 for the association inorder to participate with Team Diabetes.
As of last weekend, Jackson had raised$5,500, and hopes to come up with theextra $600 necessary by July 8.
Having lived with diabetes for the past30 years, Jackson said he was diagnosed“as a quote unquote, ‘borderline’ diabetic”in his very early 20s.
“As most of us know, there’s no suchthing as a borderline diabetic,” he said.“It’s like being border-line pregnant. Just… youaren’t. The new catch-phrase is pre-diabetic, butno matter what, if you’repre-diabetic, guess what? It’s gonna happen.”
For the past 12 years,Jackson has taken insulininjections twice daily.
“That was by choice,”he said. “I wasn’t happywith the [blood sugar level] readings I wasgetting on pill medication and I couldn’tseem to manage to get the weight to agood place, so I chose to go on insulin.”
There’s a good reason behind the deci-sion. His late grandfather, former promin-ent Maple Ridge businessman Charles Reid, was a Type 2 diabetic.
“As I was growing up I watched him losea toe, and then a foot, and by the time hehad passed away, he had lost both legs justbelow the knee,” Jackson related. “I prom-ised myself I would never let that happento me.”
To keep himself healthy, Jackson is bal-ancing exercise with a healthy diet, notalways easy when you work in the foodindustry.
“I have food around me all the time so itcan be a hindrance,” he said.
Jackson, who has never been to Europebefore, let alone Iceland, said the marathonin Reykjavik is a good fit mainly becauseof the time frame, both in terms of whenthe event falls and the how long it will takehim to come up with the necessary funds.
Before tackling this challenge, Jacksonsaid his long-distance running experi-ence could be summed up in two words:“Absolutely zero.”
In that vein, he hasn’t set a time goal forthe marathon; his priority is crossing thefinish line.
Jackson started training in February andis currently up to 25 and 30kilometres a week – andincreasing as he gets closerto his half marathon.
“I’m on a good pace, now,” said Jackson, whohas been training up to fivedays a week. “I had beendoing a little bit of trainingso to speak, before this [thehalf marathon] because Iwanted to get a little bit
better fit, so I was on a treadmill at the fit-ness centre and that sort of stuff.”
Jackson’s wife, Carla, supports hisendeavor.
“When I told her I was thinking aboutit she looked at me and said, ‘Go for it,’”Jackson said. “She has always been tryingto push me to better my health and to bet-ter my fitness.”

No confusionin referendum
The HST referendum is effectivelyunderway right now.
Here’s the question: “Are youin favour of extinguishing the HST(Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstat-ing the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) inconjunction with the GST (Goods andServices Tax)? (Yes/No).”
Actually, it’s a straightforward ques-tion. You can vote Yes to “extinguish”(kill, drop, end, remove, dump…replace with your own euphemism, ifyou wish) the HST. Or you can vote Noto “not extinguish” it (keep it).
But with all the noise about how dif-ficult it is, some folks may start thinkingit really is more difficult than it seems– and they may begin to second-guesstheir response.
The referendum process is easy, too.Elections BC was to begin mailing outballots on June 13, and most eligiblevoters in the province are expected toreceive them by June 24. Those whodon’t get their ballots by then will needto get in touch with Elections BC byJuly 8.
The only tough part: marked bal-lots need to be back to Elections BC byJuly 22, whether or not there is a postalstrike.
The hardest part of it all is trying tounderstand potential impacts of extin-guishing or not extinguishing the HST.Far more difficult than that actual refer-endum question itself. The governmenthas had nearly a year to explain, andstill hasn’t done so sufficiently.
The politicians – those we haveentrusted to help us through these sortsof things – have been of little help, notto mention their outright dishonestyfrom the get-go. Premier Christy Clark’seleventh-hour manipulations to con-vince taxpayers to vote No have servedto make it still more difficult to calcu-late ramifications. And has OppositionLeader Adrian Dix got a hidden agendafor the PST? Or is that more BC Liberalhype?
It’s expected to take weeks to countthe referendum ballots – results aren’texpected to be announced beforeAugust 11.
Here’s hoping the results are as con-fusing as the question – and not as con-fusing as the politicians have made it.

I nearly died.I think.At least that’s the way I
remember it.Sort of.I can’t remember much of it.
I know people whose memoriesgo all the way back beyond theirsecond birthday.
Me? I’ve got a couple of mem-ories that I can trace back tofive… maybe four.
And one of those is a hazyblotch of visuals and feelings from when I hadthe measles.
Strangely, I remember feeling – all at the sametime – warm and close to my mother, and alsoscared and distant, with an odd feeling like I wasdisappearing (at least, that’s how I interpret thatfuzzy memory-feeling now).
And that’s about all I can pull out of my ownhead today.
I also remember that it was New Year’s Eve…although, I’m not actually sure that it really was.
It was round about that time of year, though.I know that from the bits and pieces of stories Iheard years later – the kinds of nebulous storiesthat float in and around families to remind usof who we are and the ties that bind us to eachother.
You know… what sociologists would probablycall family folk history, or some other similarterm.
I don’t recall anyone ever talking directly aboutthat night, but the subject of how dreadfully ill Iwas did surface as addenda to other stories fromtime to time.
There were stories that included a hospitalvisit and an oxygen tent and parents and siblingsdeathly fearful for my (unlikely) future.
The hospital and oxygen tent really hit homemany years later, when I realized that my closeencounter with my own mortality must haveoccurred before universal, government-fundedhealth care.
You have to understand thatmy parents were not rich. Theyhad recently left Holland withvery little (born here, I was ourfirst official Canadian citizen)– and although there was a lot ofhope and prospects for prosper-ous futures in Canada, drawingtens of thousands of immigrantslike my family, the reality wasthat, by today’s standards, ruralCanada was a Third World coun-try – a developing country suffer-
ing a lot of post-war growing pains.Indeed, we were poor. And although I know – have always known
– that my parents loved me dearly, I must havebeen extremely ill for them to scrape together themoney for hospital treatment. They must havebeen incredibly scared for my survival.
It was never, in my entire life, said out loud tome… but I can impute from tangential evidencethat I probably would have died without thatdramatic intervention.
The measles probably would have killed me.That’s why today’s anti-vaccination trend,
fueled by charlatans and idiots preying on ignor-ance, flabbergasts me. I do not get it.
It’s not just measles, although it is the poten-tially deadly outbreak running through Quebecthat brings my own past back to mind.
I’m one of those people who have an irrationalfear of needles. I don’t understand it. They don’thurt (much), and through the years, they haveundoubtedly saved me from a whole storehouseof uncomfortably hazy memories – or no mem-ories at all!
The only thing that I know to be more irration-al than my fear of needles is that parents todaywould risk putting their children – for want ofa simple vaccination – through a near-deathexperience like mine.
Perhaps it’s because the vaccinations theyreceived when they were children spared themsuch memories of their own.

Dear Editor,Congratulations and thank you, Corisa
Bell and your fellow activists. You have accomplished what many
people have been looking for, namely agood look by the government at the HSTand changes in the making that will be ofbenefit to most people, especially lower-income families and seniors.
This includes a two-staged reduction inthe tax rate from 12 to 10 per cent andrebates of $175 per person at the end ofthis year for many in the aforementionedcategories.
Admittedly, not everyone will benefit asmuch because of too high an income, butthat is also what most people are askingfor.
So, all is well and a good reason to voteNO to the upcoming referendum.
However, there could be a fly in theointment – so to speak – and that is if westill let our original anger influence ourrational decision making.
We must let bygones be bygones, stepover it and make an informed decision.
Through the ages a multitude of prom-inent people have spoken out about thedevastating consequences of holding agrudge or acting out of anger.
To see a long list of such advice, justGoogle “anger” or “consequences ofanger.” It is very sobering.
For sure, vote for or against extinguish-ing the HST when you are convincedof the right choice, but may it be aninformed decision.
As for half-truths and misinformation, that comes from all sides.
Adrian Dix is saying that the publicshould vote for a “return to the seven-per-cent provincial sales tax” and a littlefurther, that we should return to the PST,but he neglects to add “to the PST andGST.”
And when the latest poll suggests thesupport against the HST is now at 56 percent, down from the previous 80 per cent,he is quoted as saying that this is not sur-prising, given the $5 million the govern-ment is spending promoting the HST.
Here he deliberately ignores the factthat it is very well possible that the vot-ing public is finally becoming far betterinformed by doing their homework.
Walter Verwoerd, Maple Ridge
No sanity in saying ‘yes’Dear Editor,
I read in The TIMES two anti-govern-ment, anti-tax, anti-business, anti-HSTletters that seem to feel that the HST issomehow the ultimate evil.
If there are any honest anti-HST sup-porters, please explain the dishonest“extinguish the HST” signs.
The voting is to replace the soon to be10-per-cent HST with a 12-per-cent PSTand GST – not extinguish it.
It is also yes to paying $1.6 billion backto the feds and increased B.C. taxes topay for this. It is yes to putting back thecostly red tape of setting up a PST taxsystem that may have to be eight or nineper cent to pay for the extra costs.
Taxes are necessary and to say yes tohigher taxes in order to send a message isjust dumb.
I fail to find any sane reason to voteyes.
Dan Banov, Whonnock
Wording is confusingDear Editor,
The question for the HST referendum isconfusing.
I am an HST supporter yet have had towrap my head around voting NO.
I want the HST so I am voting NO tokeep it. This to me is double-speak.
I am of the opinion that the anti-HSTpeople designed the question.
It should be a simple question. Do youwant the HST? and vote Yes or No.
A Yes would keep the HST, not elimin-ate it.
Gord Parkhurst, Maple Ridge
Business comes out aheadDear Editor,
So a mining company is claiming theysaved $800,000 since the HST came intolaw.
WOW!Good for them.I haven’t seen a thank you for it,
though. We, the ordinary citizens of British
Columbia, paid for it.The money we paid for the HST when
we bought anything went to pay the HSTtax for the large companies.
Aren’t we nice to do that?It doesn’t matter that seniors and some
families have a hard time paying theincreased tax so that the mining companycould save on their taxes.
I would like to think that the tax I paygoes to make life easier for me.
I think businesses should pay their fairshare and not intimidate the populationto pay it for them as the present ads aredoing.
A lot of money has been spent on thegovernment and business ads trying toconvince people that the HST is good forus.
Do not be fooled. Their con game willfail if you vote YES to extinguish theHST.
Stan Hutchison, Maple Ridge
Tax shift a heavy burdenDear Editor,
Even if we had to pay back the entire$1.6 billion to the feds for the HST bribe, which is highly doubtful, we would stillbe a lot further ahead than if we had toshoulder the $1.9-billion annual tax shiftfrom big business to individuals.
We will pay that amount every year, forever, as opposed to once.
Cheryl Baron, Maple Ridge
Goodmoney after badDear Editor,
I am sorry, Christy Clark, but cuttingone or two per cent off the HST will donothing to address the real flaws andinjustices in the HST.
It will not address the fact that becauselabour used to be tax exempt under thePST and used to be five per cent, seniorsand other individuals who can no longerdo those household jobs themselves nowpay a whopping 12 per cent.
Even 10 per cent is still a hundred percent increase.
It will do absolutely nothing to solvethe medical anomaly of paying 12 or 10per cent on a health therapy, registeredmassage therapy – which I use to controlmy fibromyalgia.
It would hardly make a dent in themore than $1,700 dollars this tax gougehas cost me in less than a year.
The consequence of the HST is that Ilive on very rapidly diminishing fixedpension.
Am I to believe that Wayne Clark’sexperience with the HST is just anotheranomaly? Stop with the throwing goodmoney after bad already.

Emmerson does have some supportin the form of a group called PREFER(poverty reduction, education, andfamily empowerment in Rwanda),with members based in Maple Ridge, but Wilkes and Chipperfield want todo their part also.
“The thing is, they have to feed thestudents too,” said Wilkes.
The two women hope to raise
$5,000 for the project.“We’re just givingher the money to doas she chooses,” saidChipperfield.
“One day I havea vision for her thatshe would be able toaccommodate volun-teers on the property,”said Wilkes.
“Personally I justfind it so inspiring,”added Chipperfield.“People who just selleverything and movethere.”

LAMINATE WAREHOUSE IN MAPLE RIDGESTOCKS HIGH-QUALITY FLOOR PRODUCTSAT REASONABLE PRICES.
In a relatively short amount of time, LaminateWarehouse has established itself as one ofMaple Ridge’s premier flooring destinations.
“One of our catch phrases is ‘quality productsat warehouse prices,’” said owner ShayneSaunders. “We’re at the lower end of the scalefor pricing and the higher end of the scale forquality.”
Laminate Warehouse carries a variety offlooring products, some not commonly found inother stores.
“We carry Whistler Premium, which has alifetime warranty against wearing, fading andstaining, and a five-year water and moisturewarranty, which is unusual,” Saunders said.
In addition to supplying quality products,Saunders said a welcoming environment andknowledge staff keep customers satisfied.
“We’re pretty customer service oriented,”he said. “We want customers to understand
the products they’re buying. We treat peoplehonestly and fairly and give them a good deal, and it keeps people coming back.”
The flourishing business quickly outgrew itsprevious location in the Maple Ridge industrialpark, and in 2010 Laminate Warehouse movedto their current location at 22753 DewdneyTrunk Road. A second location is set to open inMission this June.

It is that time of yearagain, when the weath-er is getting warmer and
we start to see itchy petsthanks to the return of fleaseason.
Although we see fleaproblems all year, thesummer and fall tend to bethe worst.
Getting an early start onflea prevention is the keyto avoiding severe out-breaks in September andOctober.
Dogs and cats share thesame fleas, so it is important to treat allpets in your home.
Treating for fleas has never been easierwith the wide range of products avail-
able. But when it comes toenvironmental control it isimportant to understandthe flea life cycle.
Adult fleas take a bloodmeal from your pet andthen lay a large number ofeggs, which fall off the petonto floors and bedding.
They hatch into larvaein 14-28 days and theylive in carpets, cracks, andcrevices and eat adult fleafeces.
Eventually they go intothe pupae or cocoon stage
and when stimulated by vibrations orcarbon dioxide from pets breathing, theyemerge as adult fleas.

Snowballing of snow angelsPitt Meadows Snow Angels volunteers were acknowledged at Pitt Meadows Council on June 7 for their workin the community throughout the winter and snowfall. “Where there are people with a physical limitation wefind that dealing with any snowfall is difficult,” said program creator Anne Friendly. The goal of the programwas to help neighbours clear their driveways and sidewalks after a snowfall to comply with the City’s removalbylaw deadline of 10 a.m. “We hope that the Snow Angles program will snowball,” said Friendly. From left,Alex Kittle, Kevin Klop, Anne Friendly, Councillor Gwen O’Connell, and John Edington Jr. and his daughter.

HST will be reduced from 12% to 10%.After listening to British Columbians, the government has proposedan HST reduction from 12% to 11% by 2012, then to 10% by 2014.This proposed change will take effect if the province votes to keepthe HST in the referendum. If B.C. votes to return to the GST + PSTsystem, the combined rate will remain at 12%.
Transition cheques for families & seniors.Under the proposed change to a 10% HST rate, the average B.C. familywill be $120 better off annually than under the old 12% GST + PSTsystem. And to help transition to the lower rate, the government willprovide $175 for every child under 18 and every senior with incomeup to $40,000.

Maple Ridge fighterswere part of a theCarlson Gracie team’sdominating performanceat a jiu-jitsu tournament.by Troy [email protected]
Maple Ridge-based jiu-jitsu fighters grappled theirway to gold at a tourna-ment in Richmond on May29.
Carlson Gracie mixedmartial arts (MMA) andMarcus Soares BrazilianJiu-Jitsu (BJJ) haveschools in Maple Ridge,Burnaby, and Langley, and on the final Sundayin May, Soares held thefifth annual Carlson GracieCup at the Olympic Oval inRichmond.
There, BJJ and submis-sion grappling practitionersfrom around the provincecompeted to see whichteam would reign supreme.Hundreds of athletes ofall ages from differentschools tested one another, using various arm locks, leg holds and chokes inan attempt to submit theiropponents and make them“tap.”
“The goal is to take theopponent down and submithim. The only way to winthe fight before the timeexpires is with submission– no striking involved,”explained Marcus Soares, head coach of CarlsonGracie Team Canada.“The self defence part ofBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu practisesdefence against strikes. We practise techniques, soyou aren’t an easy target toyour opponent.”
Of the 20 teams thatcompeted at the OlympicOval, 16 won medals. TheCarlson Gracie Team cameaway with 97 points result-ing from 23 medals – 14 ofthem of the golden variety
to go along with nine sil-vers and the first place tro-phy for the fifth consecu-tive year. The second-placeteam earneda distant 11points giv-ing it threemedals, while thethird placeteam earned10 points.
Maple Ridge residentswho took home goldincluded 25-year-old BryceGougeon and 18-year-oldOliver Vajda.
A white belt, Vajdacompeted above his cur-rent level, in the blue beltcategory.
Soares said his athletesdid very well.
“We had more pointsthan all other 20 schools
combined,”Soaressaid, priorto a train-ing sessionThursday,June 9 atthe CarlsonGracie
Maple Ridge school.Soares gave great credit
to his “right hand man”Jonathan Curtis who is aninstructor and brown beltat Carlson Gracie MMA inMaple Ridge. Curtis alsoteaches in Mission hopingto spread the art of BJJ and
expand the Carlson GracieTeam.
In 1969, Carlson Gracieformed the Carlson GracieTeam and over the nextthree decades his athletesdominated the sport, according to Soares.
Gracie produced manyelite students includingSoares, a seventh-degreeblack belt and the highestactive ranking black belt inNorth America.
Soares has instructed andheld seminars throughoutthe world and has nowmade his home in Surrey.
The 54-year-old Soarescalls BJJ is the most com-plete form of self defence.
“It is not [a] martial artto attack people, it is todefend yourself,” he said, adding that it is a verycerebral form of martialarts. “I’ve been doing jiu-jitsu for 41 years and I’mstill learning. We have tobe humble in this thing, here. Nobody knows every-thing. It’s a mix of condi-tioning, ability, techniques, and a lot of thinking, too.”
The success at tourna-ments such as the one heldin Richmond is a continua-tion of the work he did inBrazil, Soares noted.
“I came from my team inBrazil, and we dominatedthe scene in the country,”he said. “When I cameto Canada, I promised tomy students I would forma very strong team, andtoday the team has 12black belts.”
• • •Vajda will enter the com-
bat zone again June 17,when he defends his WestCoast MMA bantamweightbelt at Quest for Glory: TheBeginning at the CroatianCultural Centre.
With a 5-0 MMA record,Vajda will take on challen-ger Ronald Diaz, represent-ing Diaz Combat Sports.
The matches begin at 7p.m. Tickets are on salethrough ticketscene.ca.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles?
Then you'll love Sudoku.This mind-bending puzzle
will have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpen
your pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy
to the test!
Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
