Former Hammond Elementarystudents reunited when a series of10-year-old boxes were opened.by Maria [email protected]
Teletubbies, videocassettes, and oldnewspaper clippings, letters and cassetteswere some of the items pulled from atime capsule put under lock and key 10years ago by Hammond Elementary kids.
Many of those students came back tothe school to see what they had put intoa time capsule under the direction of thenteacher-librarian Phyllis Schnider whilethe old Hammond Elementary was beingdecommissioned and the new one wasbeing christened.
Although it’s been only 10 years sincethe capsule was compiled, Schnider saidthe students have changed a lot and it’sstrange to see them coming back to thetime capsule opening with their own chil-dren.
“(It’s) very exciting to visit with stu-dents and families that I used to teachat the old Hammond and now to seethem all grown up with their own lives,”Schnider said. She was especially happyto hear that many of her former studentswant to be teachers.

A Korean war vet madeRemembrance Day somethingextra special for a group ofMaple Ridge ladies.by Roxanne [email protected]
Fourteen war brides, daugh-ters of fallen veterans, andveterans’ widows were
whisked away in a stretch lim-ousine, plied with bubbly, andtreated to a concert Thursday – allthanks to the kindness and gener-osity of a Korean war vet.
On his limited military pension,Len Johnston spent the past yearsaving. His goal: to treat a groupof ladies from the Maple RidgeBaptist tower to an experience of alifetime.
Setting aside $60 every month,Johnston managed to purchase14 front row seats to the DalRichard’s Remembrance Day con-cert, held at the ACT on Nov. 11.
“I call them ‘my sweethearts ofthe ’40s’,” Johnston said, know-ing that many of the women fromhis apartment building are lifelongfans of Richards and music of thatera.
But the former special forcescommando also knew that mostof the women had never had achance to see the music legendand his orchestra in person.
Treating women to theRemembrance Day concert beganas a tradition a year ago, whenJohnston first saved up and boughtseven front row seats to RichardsRemembrance Day concert.
The looks of joy and delight onthe women’s faces last year wasall the motivation the 79-year-oldveteran needed to arrange a repeatperformance last week.
“I just saw the look on theirfaces, and knew I had to do itagain,” Johnston told the TIMES.
This month, he topped off thatexperience with the rental of alimo, and acquisition of somechampagne for “the girls” to enjoyon their ride around Haney beforethe show.
“It really made their day, theywere like a bunch of teenagegirls,” said Johnston, who accom-panied the women.
Watching the smiles on all thewomen’s faces, hearing theirgiggles, seeing tears of joy, andreceiving countless hugs of thanksconvinced Johnston to do it againfor Remembrance Day 2011.
This time around, he’s hopingto purchase the first two rows ofseats (28 tickets), rent two limos, and – well there might be some-thing else a little special in theworks.
“I’ve already started saving up,”Johnston said. “I can afford $100a month and it’s not much whenyou see how much it means tothem… I’m going to get two limosand really have a party.”
This annual gesture by the warvet has brought great joy to themany recipients, including himself.
One of the “ladies” called hima “gentleman” while another ofhis guests called him an “old war-horse with a heart of jelly.”
Agnes McLean, 74, has attendedthe Dal Richards concert withJohnston two years in a row, anddescribed it as one of the high-lights of her year.
“We had a ball,” she said, not-ing that Johnston treats the ladiesin his building well throughoutthe year, spontaneously presentingthem with chocolates and flowersfor all to enjoy.
“He went out of his way tomake it such a special day,” said avery grateful McLean.
Thursday’s concert was the firsttime attending for Merle Haynes.
“It was a realtreat,” said the80-year-old. “Itwas a wonderfulthing to do. It’s a wonderful wayto remember the men who losttheir lives and those who cameback from the war.”
Ramona Charters, 72, has alwaysadmired Richards’ music, par-ticularly moved by the “magicalsounds” of his orchestra’s brasssection.
While she’s never rode in a limobefore, and attending the showand tapping her toe along to themusic was exhilarating, she wasmost thrilled by an after-show pri-vate visit with Richards.
“We’re very lucky to have thesegentlemen in our lives,” Charterssaid, referring to both Johnstonand Richards as cordial, kind, andcompassionate.
“We’re always thrilled when Mr.Johnston brings his group withhim to the Dal Richards’ Orchestrashow every year. Seeing themattend the concerts and participatein an annual ACT tradition is areal treat,” said Nick Sartore, mar-keting coordinator for the ACT.
“It’s what I can do to makethese ladies, many who are shut-ins, happy,” Johnston concluded.

Identity of a man killed on the Lougheed last weekhas not yet been released by police.
A 52-year-old man was struck and killed on LougheedHighway on Wednesday night after he tried to dartthrough traffic.
Police say it appears the man misjudged traffic andtried running across in the middle of the 21600-block onthe busy highway around 9 p.m.
The weather, the time of night, and the fact he waswearing dark clothes all contributed to the accident, police say. In addition, he was not crossing at a cross-walk.
The man was struck by a Suzuki SUV which was driv-en by a woman travelling eastbound on the highway. Itappears the male darted across the highway in front ofthe vehicle. Emergency services personnel arrived at thescene immediately after the accident; however, the manhad already died.
An investigation was conducted including an analysisof the collision by traffic services personnel.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in thecase of the driver.
Police have not released the name of the man as theyhaven’t been able to contact his family. The man was aclient at the Salvation Army’s Caring Place ministries.
Crash sends three to hospitalA three-vehicle crash on Lougheed Highway at Harris
Road on Sunday around noon sent three people to RidgeMeadows Hospital.
A 1997 Mercury XR7 was eastbound on LougheedHighway when the driver lost control of his vehicle, which jumped over the dividing median. The car thencollided with a car and then a pickup truck beforestopping. Police and the Pitt Meadows fire departmentarrived on scene.
The 67-year-old Maple Ridge man driving the Mercurywas injured, but he also showed signs of having con-sumed alcohol, according to police. A demand under theauthority of the Criminal Code for the man’s blood wasread and complied with.
The man was issued a violation ticket for a MotorVehicle Act charge, and police continue with theimpaired driving investigation, which will include wait-ing for the results of the blood analysis.

…continued from page A1At the time, the new Hammond
Elementary had just opened and theschool was in the process of settling intothe new building.
The school was always a tight-knit com-munity, said Fay Ollenberger-Pogany whoattended the time capsule opening withher three daughters and her husband BertPogany who was a tireless volunteer atthe school from 1991 to 2003.
Three generations of the Ollenberger-Pogany family attended HammondElementary – Fay’s aunt DorothyOllenberger-Pogany, herself and her threedaughters Serena, Faithe and Tess.
Her daughters attended when the newschool was being built, while Fay andher aunt had gone to the old Hammondschool which used to stand where theschool’s parking lot now exists.
“It was hard when they tore down theold (school),” Fay said. A school has beenat the site for 112 years.
At the time capsule opening, Schniderread a long letter from former assistantsuperintendent Randy Cranston about the
construction of the new school, notingsome of the difficulties involved in theconstruction, including when the construc-tion company went bankrupt while build-ing the school.
Schider pulled the boxes out one by oneand opened each one at the celebration inearly November.
Groups of students gathered to look atthe items they had collected and the let-ters they had written and placed into theboxes.
“It’s like a big reunion,” said KirstenMueller, who was in Caroline Kiez’s classwhen the time capsule was put together.
“We wish we had put more stuff in it,”said Nicole Moen, who was part of thesame class.
Yennadon Elementary School teacherNina Fowell is also looking for her formerstudents and former students from JonWheatley’s class from the school year2001-2002 who made a time capsule.
Fowell is hoping former families of theschool will contact her at [email protected] or 604-240-5032 for information aboutthe reunion to be held on April 15, 2011.

Cracks have appeared inthe bridge from MapleRidge to Langley.by Matthew ClaxtonPostmedia Network Inc.
Cracks in the GoldenEars Bridge are nothingto worry about – in fact,TransLink says they wereanticipated when thebridge was being built.
Networks of cracks onseveral sections of thebridge, particularly nearthe off-ramps and on-ramps, has developed overthe past several months.
The cracks have all beenfilled with a sealant and
aren’t developing intoanything larger, TransLinkstaff have reported.
The cause of the cracks, according to TransLink
spokesperson Drew Snider, was the temperature whensome sections of concretewere being poured.
Because it was warm
then, builders knew theconcrete would changeshape and crack later.
Golden Crossing, thecompany that built andmaintains the bridge, isresponsible for sealing upthe cracks as they appear.

Scrapes and shuffles ofleather shoes on the hardconcrete echoed acrossthe cenotaph grounds, asparade marshall Capt. JeffDavis called a gathering ofveterans and other parad-ers to attention.
The colour party, flagspointed, marched past theline of saluting veteransand through the windingpath of gathered people.
The drums and pipesbegan as the parade groupslowly made itsway out of theassembly area.
For the past hourthese groups hadbeen standing insilence, eyes castdown and thoughtscast up – remem-brance for thosefallen.
The Memorial PeacePark cenotaph was ringedwith people. The veterans, their medals gleaming andaligned on their coats andblazers, made up the innermost circle, followed bythe assembled clumps ofpolice, firefighters, para-medics and cadets.
On the outside, lookingin on the ceremony, local
citizens packed themselvestight against the yellowtwine barricade.
Run-off from the groupsfound themselves craningfor sightlines from a shut-down 224th Street, whileothers perched above thepark grounds from second-or third-storey adjacentlocations.
The sharp crack of a riflesalvo had broken the sol-emn quiet, just before thelaying of the wreaths.
As local digni-taries and groupsplaced poppy-lacedrings at the footof the cenotaph, asquadron of planesdroned over a fas-cinated crowd.
After the lastwreath had beenplaced, Davis
called for attention. Theband struck up God Savethe Queen, the solemnityof the gray day keep-ing singing voices quiet, respectful.
As the procession ofuniforms made its waythrough the outdoor hallsof spectators, a steady, stately clapping began.
The clapping was soft
and reserved, acknowledg-ing a service and sacrificemade without crossinginto vulgarity.
By noon, the crowd haddispersed, many havinggone to Branch 88 of theRoyal Canadian Legion upthe street, others havinggone home.
The stone cross in thecentre of the park stoodtall, torch on top burningstrong.
Around it, wreaths oftwigs and plastic sprungfrom a bed of red, fabricpoppies. A small collectionof notes to the past: Lestwe forget.

Our View
First try outstone coldsobriety
Rich Coleman’s remarks about thenew drinking and driving rules justimplemented are not helping drivers, pub owners, or police.
The Solicitor General said peoplehave “misinterpreted” the rules tomean that they can’t have a drink at alland get behind the wheel.
Actually, it seems that’s been themessage of government, police, ICBC,and MADD for decades. The days inwhich it was considered normal tohave a drink or two – or six – andweave your way home are long gone.
The tough new rules only changedthe penalties for hitting various stagesof drunk driving, including longer driv-ing suspensions for those who werecaught with more than .05 blood alco-hol content.
It has long been known to be dan-gerous to have that much booze inyour system. The problem with peoplewho drink and drive is often that theyeither play down how much they’vehad to drink, or that they believe thatthey “can hold their liquor.”
Coleman is the top cop for a gov-ernment that promised to be tough oncrime. For him to suggest that copsare being too harsh with legislation hisown government introduced is strange.
If people are too afraid now to haveeven one or two drinks with dinner, good. If the new rules cause morepeople to take a cab, or to have onemember of their group act as a desig-nated driver, that will undoubtedlysave lives.
As for bar and restaurant ownerslosing money – tough. Our society hasbeen moving towards a saner apprecia-tion of the dangers of drunk driving formore than half a century. If that costsbars a few bucks, it’s nothing com-pared to the human lives that could besaved.
Ask some Mounties who’ve pulledover drunks or who’ve cleaned up aftera fatal alcohol-fueled crash if they’dprefer drivers to have “one or twodrinks” or none before hitting the road.
– M.C.
Post time for the PremierStakes has not yet beenannounced, but already we havesome manoeuvring at the gateas the early favourites jostle forposition.
We’re looking for a long-trackwinner this evening, ladeeesand gennellmen, so there’s stillplenty of time to get your betsdown.
Let’s look at some of the likely contenders.Solicitor General – one of the early favourites
from Inner Circle Stables – likes to come in fromthe right side on the stretch, and has proven inpast performances that he can handle a muddyroad – and yesss, ladeees and gennellmen, we’reexpecting race day to run on a dirt track.
Like all the top runners he’s not officially regis-tered for the race yet, but he’s been out on thewarm-up track practically every day since Gordothe Great dropped his crown on a double-tongueto make way for a successor to his title.
The recently re-named Solicitor General, whoalso runs under the monicker of Social Houser,is packing extra weight in this go-round, but heand his handlers have been throwing off somehandicaps to better the odds.
Like some of the others in the warm-up pens,Solicitor General has been spilling grain from thestable to make it look like he’s willing to top upthe feed-bags of those still standing out in thecold – tried and trusted means of developing bet-ter leg support.
He’s also put some of the new track condi-tions on review. Some barn-owners have beencomplaining that trough restrictions are leavingsome of their better-paying horses thirsty at clos-ing time.
The review is a nice touch: while some of theheavy bettors want to loosen things back up,most of the moderate wagerers are content as is,and some want to close the taps some more. One
thing they all can take safely to the bet-ting windows: results of the review won’tbe available until after race day.
An ironic touch: Solicitor General, inan earlier incarnation, hung back out ofthe pack to help his stable-mate Gordothe Great retain his lead after sipping tooheavy from that trough.
Reviewing the track drinking restric-tions is by no means a stall tactic restrict-ed to Solicitor General.
A hike in minimum pay for jockeys is also“being considered” by some front runners– despite a caution by To Face Financeer (onceone of the top wing-waiters, and now still withan outside chance to enter the Stakes) that hecontrols the books, and he’s not planning anyserious track-grooming until race day is close…or past.
Highways to Health is another of the innercircle touted to make a strong finish in thePremier Stakes. The oddsmakers are havingtrouble putting numbers to this contender. Whilesome have him down as having overpassed hisprime, others are still expecting him to bridgesome gaps with his unique Gateway Gambit style– a style that favoured his previous open roadtechniques, but which may not fair so well froma hospital bed.
Announcing himself as a strong contender isNew in Education – completing the current tri-fecta of inner circle favourites. New in Educationleft the hospital beds (currently occupied byHighways to Health) to ride on Gordo’s flank, before shifting to a new school of thought.
But the big money today, ladeees and gennell-men, is still outside the inner circle.
And so far, that’s a pretty lonely side of thetrack. The top fillies expected in the running,TeeVee Taylor and Surrey on Top, have bothcome up lame, as has last winter’s stud, OlympicFurlong.
And that’s it for now, ladeees and gennellmen.

Gaming
MLAwent to batEditor,
Over the past year, many charities in our com-munities have been affected by changes thathave taken place with regards to gaming funds.
Some groups lost all funding, some hadmajor cuts, and many – like the organizationI work for (North Fraser Therapeutic RidingAssociation) – had their funding delayed formonths.
For non-profits such as ours this can havedevastating results.
Marc Dalton came and visitedour facility and learned aboutour program. When funding wasdelayed, I contacted MLA Dalton toask for his help.
Marc did help!He advised us how to apply for
interim financing, he advocated forus in Victoria, he supplied me with a name andcontact number to reach a real person, not justa recording.
Mr. Dalton personally followed up withme several times by phone to ensure we hadreceived interim financing, and also to let usknow the status of our full grant.
At the fall AGM of the Ridge Meadows BingoAssociation, several member agencies confirmedthat they had also received the same supportfrom Mr. Dalton.
In my experience, people actually doing whatthey say they will, following up to keep youinformed of the process, and then ensuring thatthe promised result takes place, seems to be theexception not the rule.
I believe in giving credit where it is due. MarcDalton has followed through for my organiza-tion and many others serving this community. Is that not what we elected him to do?

Council debate
BelieversEditor,
Regarding the controversyaround the prayer beforecouncil meetings, a search ofCanada’s history shows thatthis country was founded bypeople who believed in God.
They established Canada asone Dominion under God.
I find it no coincidence thatwe have received His blessingsfor all these years comparedwith countries that have trad-itionally been non-Christian.
For those who do not believe, why worry about what youmust regard as a harmless act?

I was hoping you wouldpublish a big thank you tothe person who helped warnpeople Nov. 12 on the GoldenEars Bridge that someone wasdriving the wrong way on thewrong side of the bridge.
I nearly had a head-on col-lision with this person, and ifit wasn’t for the person whoflashed their high beams acrossthe bridge, I wouldn’t be hereright now.

Smoking at least twopacks of cigarettesa day and weigh-ing in at more than
230 pounds, Brian Strileskydidn’t envision himselfmaking it to the ripe oldage of retirement – let alonebeyond.
But thanks to a darefrom some acquaintanceseight years ago, a largedose of pain, a steadyinfusion of willpower, anda previously untappedwealth of determination, this 50-year-old has literal-ly turned his life around.
Today, he’s lookingforward to growing old,and feeling like he mightactually achieve that goal.
While he’s not in whathe’d describe as ultimatecondition, Strilesky is feel-ing healthier and happierthan ever before in his life.
“I was leading a veryunhealthy, sedentarylife and only saw it get-ting worse,” Strileskysaid, recalling those earlydays while working atMussallem Motors.
“I was getting unhealthyvery fast. I shudder tothink where I was going.”
He’s since changed jobs, changed residence, andmost of all, he’s changedthe way he’s living his life– living each day to the
fullest and making exerciseand healthy eating a partof his daily routine.
“Mentally, it’s beenamazing,” said Strilesky, adding that his newhealth-conscious lifestylehas also improved his rela-tionships – especially withhis family.
“I’m a different person,”he said. “My life is com-pletely different… I’m hap-pier, which resonates intoevery aspect of my life.”

Brian Strilesky was joined by a number of his co-workers and friends atDams Ford Lincoln, where he is now sales manager, during the first-everRBC GrandFondo bike ride from Vancouver to Whistler.
…continued from page A10Reflecting back, Strilesky
thought a lot about chan-ging his life before, butnever did anything untilthe gauntlet was throwndown by a group of insur-ance brokers who chal-lenged him to join them ina triathlon in Harrison HotSprings. The event includ-ed a 400-metre swim, a20-kilometre ride, and afive-kilometre run.
“It broke me. For amonth, I wasn’t right,” herecalled.
Collapsing on the grassimmediately after the race,he was touched to havehis family there to supporthim, but his entire bodywas cramping and spasm-ing and he remembers thepain was unbearable.
“This is nonsense,” hetold his family, vowinghe’d never do it again.“That really hurt. I hadno interest in doing thatagain.”
“A few days later, Irevisited that [decision],”he recalled.
By that winter, he wasworking out regularly andtraining in preparation forhis second race – this onein Oliver – and still notsure if he was going tomake it.
He’s since quit smok-ing, shed 60 pounds, started playing a numberof sports, and participatingin several different kinds
of races a year – from tri-athlons, to Ironman com-petition, even the recentGranFondo bike race fromDowntown Vancouver toWhistler.
While he loved his new, active lifestyle, Strileskyadmitted he was gettinginjured regularly – suffer-ing a lot with muscle pulls.
That all turned aroundfor him two years ago, when he added Bikram’s
hot yoga a few times aweek. He said it’s beena saviour for his agingbody, allowing him to stillenjoy all the activities he’sgrown to enjoy, from run-ning and mountain biking,to swimming, hiking andplaying squash with theboys.
While Strilesky is reluc-tant to have the spotlightturned on himself andhis accomplishments, he
enjoys encouraging otherstowards a healthier life-style, too.
“I mostly let peoplecome to me. I don’t cru-sade,” he said.
But for anyone who asks– whether it’s co-workersand family, or friends andcomplete strangers – heoffers himself up as anexample.
If he can turn his lifearound, anyone can.

The Emerald Pigs serveup butterflies and dinnerthis week at the ACT.by Troy [email protected]
You don’t have to befrom the late ’60s to lovethe era.
Theatre-goers to theButterflies Are Free play,by Leonard Gershe, cansoak in the nostalgia ofa romantic comedy setin 1969 while enjoying athree-course meal at TheACT’s Genstar StudioTheatre.
“Bring your go-go boots,”said play director SharonMalone.
“It should be fun. Youdon’t need to be from the‘60s to enjoy the ‘60s.”
The play revolves aroundDon Baker (played byKyler Banks), who hasbeen blind since birth. His overprotective motherFlorence (Hazel Neill) fol-lows his every move.
Don finally decides tomove into his own apart-ment in Manhattan to pur-sue his songwriting ambi-tions and makes a dealwith his mother that shewon’t visit for two months.
He meets Jill (Becca
Strom), the free-spiritedactress-next-door, and theyhave an instant connection.
Mrs. Baker’s controllinginstincts go into overdrive, however, when she breaksher promise and pops inunexpectedly.
“Butterflies reminds usall what it’s like to strivefor our independence fromour parents, regardless ofour own challenges andhandicaps,” she said. “Itis also a reminder that ourchallenge as parents is toraise strong, independentchildren, even if it meanswatching them get hurt.”
An opening night pre-view, with tickets goingfor $15 each, is set forNov. 17. No dinner will beserved that evening.
For the next three nights,Nov. 18-20, doors open at6 p.m, with curtain open-ing at 8 p.m. All threeshows include dinner.

Donations and registrations arecoming in in dribs and drabs, so far.by Roxanne [email protected]
It was 40 days and counting untilChristmas. That was the count Mondaymorning, when Lorraine Bates and
Tom Cameron, swung open the officedoors on the Maple Ridge Pitt MeadowsHamper Society offices at the Albion fair-grounds.
The hamper office has been operatingfor a few weeks now, but admittedly newtoys and cash donations are just startingto arrive in dribs and drabs – as are the
people needing to register, said Bates, co-chair of the hamper society.
While visits to the office have been slowthus far, Bates said the number of peoplecoming through the door in the comingweeks is expected to jump.
They registered and assisted 568 familieslast Christmas – 100 more than the previ-ous year.
“With the troubled economy we areexpecting the same or more this year,”Bates said.
While that’s a big demand, Bates offeredassurances: “No one will be turned away,if they qualify,” she said, noting thatthey’ve a nice infusion of cash towardsthis year’s efforts from the Empty StockingFund, a recent book launch, and a series
of other community fundraisers heldor planned to help fund the efforts.
“Christmas can be a terrible timefor some folks but collectively asa community we can take awaythat anxiety that these familiesmay be experiencing and make thisChristmas a memorable one for theless fortunate in our communities,”Bates said.
“Please help keep Santa alive intothe hearts of children on Christmasmorning. There will be many oppor-tunities for you and your family tohelp this season.”
The hamper society operates twomonths a year with 100 per centvolunteers, explained co-chair TomCameron, noting the organization– like the community – is rich involunteers.
The hamper office is located atthe Albion fairgrounds, close tothe Planet Ice facility, and is openMondays through Fridays, 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. this month. Then, from Dec. 1to 18, the offices will be open seven daysa week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Our goals are to provide a memorableChristmas Day for financially disadvan-taged families in Maple Ridge and PittMeadows. The day comprises of a sackfull of toys for each child from birth to18, value of at least $75, and a full day oftraditional Christmas food,” Cameron said.
“In addition to the Christmas day spoil-ing, the families are treated to two daysof a free shopping spree at our Rudolph’sRecycle Shoppe and a free shopping forthe children to receive a gift to give theirparents and caregivers in our Kids OnlyGift Shoppe.”
To help make Christmas a reality forthese struggling local families, people can
drop off donations to the hamper office, call 604-463-6922 for pickup, or go onlineto www.mrpmchristmashamper.org andclick on Good Neighbour Program to findout about sponsoring a family.
As for registration, that is already under-way every Sunday in November, noonto 5 p.m. at the hamper office, or Friday,Nov. 26 at the Community Servicesoffices, 22359 119th Ave. 10 a.m. to 2p.m. or Monday, Nov. 29, at the RoyalCanadian Legion, 12101 224th St. (down-stairs) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Specially trainedbereavement volunteerswill be on hand to helpand support those whowish to place a specialornament on the hos-pice tree and write anote to someone theywant to remember.

Once the tree is dismantled, all the note cards willbe kept at the hospice society. This is a free event, butdonations are always appreciated, Murray said.
“An event this time of year really does support ourmission statement,” to provide compassion, support andcare to patients and loved ones dealing with end of lifeexperience, grief and mourning, she said.
“It is an outlet for everyone to express a memory oftheir loved ones.”
“This tends to be thehardest time of theyear for anyone whohas lost someonesignificant in their life.”Kristina Murray

Pet photos with old St. Nick are agreat way to create a holiday keepsakeand help a local animal shelter.
Katie’s Place is once again hostingits popular pet photos with Santaevent at Bosley’s starting this week-
end. This is a chance for all pet owners to
not only capture a holi-day memory, but alsohelp support the localcharity that works tire-lessly to care for andhouse cats and someother small animals ofall ages and needs.
“It’s all about expos-ure and raising aware-ness,” said MagdaSzulc, one of the found-ers of Katie’s Place. “Ifyou’re going to get pic-tures done anyway, whynot come out and support a charity whiledoing so?”
The photos are by donation and thisevent usually helps see the charitythrough some of the leaner months whenmoney is tight for everyone, Szulc said.
Katie’s Place paid almost $80,000 in vetbills in 2009 and the need never seems toslow down. Each cat is examined uponadmission and homelessness takes a tollon animals such as cats that thrive onstability.
The funds raised by this event are now
even more critical to the shelter’s oper-ation as former gaming grants have notbeen received, Szulc said.
The shelter thankfully experiencesmany success stories due to the gener-osity of its volunteers and the public atevents such as this one. Three cats calledKatja, Peaches, and Tiny Timbit wereeach hit by a car. Although Peaches losther tail, thanks to the staff and care atKatie’s Place they are now all ready for
new homes, and thoseare just three of the manyKatie’s Place stories to betold.
Pet Photos with Santawelcomes pets of all sizesand everyone donates theirtime to make this eventhappen. “We’ve even hadhorses,” said Szulc, “andSanta has had to go outinto the back alley for theirphoto because they can’teven fit in the store.”She acknowledges that
this event would not be possible withoutthe support and donation of space fromBosley’s. “They have been supporting usand the SPCA for a long time,” she said.
“They are awesome.”More than anything this is an event
is about raising awareness and moneyfor the cause, but volunteers also lovethe chance to meet all the pets and theirowners during the picture taking.
The event takes place at Bosley’s(22745 Dewdney Trunk Rd.) on Sundays,Nov. 21 and Dec. 5, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Orissa is a bright, perkylittle lady with lots ofpersonality. In her previoushome she was “good withsmall kids” but she’d preferto avoid toddlers, dogs, andother cats if she possibly can. She’s the kind of cat who doesbest on her own. Her real loveis people, and she reserves allher devotion for humans.
Posh is a gorgeous littletabby with a luxuriant coatwho is very shy. All sheneeds is time and gentlepatience. Posh wants to beloved as much as anyone andshe soaks up pets if you ap-proach her quietly. Posh woulddo best in a calm, stable, adulthome. She would enjoy shar-ing a home with other cats.
Cheerio is a charmer! Itseems she lost her homebecause her people left townand won’t be returning. Shewas indoor cat, an only pet,and she’s about four or fiveyears old. Shelter life was ashock but she adjusted be-cause of her sweet and gentletemperament. She is utterlyendearing.

Team has talent for a tough sport
Troy Landreville/Langley Advance
A big number of participants with lots of talent spell out high hopes for Maple Ridge Secondary’s wrestling team this year. Coach Bill McCrae points to successes of the past and sees a great season ahead for this year’s team.
High school
Maple Ridge Secondary grapplers arehoping to have a medal-winning yearin competitions on the wrestling mat.by Troy [email protected]
Bill McCrae has high hopes the MapleRidge Secondary School wrestling teamwill pin down medals this varsity season.
Entering his 21st year as wrestlingcoach at MRSS, McCrae believes he hassome medal hopefuls on his hands in oneof the most physically demanding varsitysports around.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “We havehuge numbers and lots of talent. It’s anice combination.”
However, the rigours of training hasalready taken a toll on the MRSS wrest-ling roster. A total of 44 students showedup to the first practice, but the numberhas since dwindled to about 32 as of lastweek.
“We lost 12 in one week,” McCrae said.“[There’s a] high attrition rate in thissport. It’s a tough physical and mentalsport. A lot of kids can’t handle the phys-ical and mental duress, I guess.”
McCrae said when it comes to wrest-ling, the toolbox, that being the mentalpart of the sport, is just asimportant as the tools used(physical skills).
“You need a positivemental attitude,” he said.“Obviously, you need tobe a good athlete, and youneed to be able to endurehardship. You have to beable to sacrifice time andhave a high pain toler-ance, too.”
Wrestling at MRSS is all about tradition. From the time McCrae arrived at MRSSin 1989 to today, he has seen a numberof talented wrestlers come through theschool.
“We had a couple of success stories inRob Wellwood [a former national cham-
pion at SFU] and a couple other kids whowon nationals,” McCrae explained. “Acouple of kids went on to the worlds andactually placed at the worlds.”
One of MRSS’s more high-profile wrest-ling alumni is Bobbie Slapinski, a nationalchampion out of MRSS and a national
team member withthe Burnaby MountainWrestling Club.
And, in 1994/95, MRSScaptured the B.C. provin-cial championship.
Looking ahead to thisyear, McCrae believesthere are some potentialprovincial medal contend-ers among MRSS’s ranks.
They include Grade 11s Brodie McKenzie,Colton Koopmans, Candice Owen, andShaelyn Corwin, and Grade 9 PaytenSmith.
“They are all hard-working kids,” hesaid.
Koopmans said wresting is one of the“hardest sports there is.”
“You have to have strength, condition-ing, technique… you can’t go in justknowing one thing. You have to be wellrounded in all the areas,” he said.
B.C. wrestling’s version of theSuperbowl is the provincial champion-ships, held in Abbotsford during the thirdweek of February. McCrae said the key isto get there with healthy wrestlers.
To ensure burnout doesn’t set in,McCrae started practice two weeks laterthan last year.
“Last year we started beforeHalloween,” McCrae said. “As I foundout, the attrition rate in the kids, plustheir attitude, really declined. So westarted later this year, and hopefully we’llbe building, building, and building toFebruary.”
McCrae tells his wrestlers: stick withthe sport, and it will pay off.
“Confidence, when you walk down thehallways, you are on the wrestling team;it’s good for companionship, and leader-ship; and they make bonds,” McCraesaid.
“We had a couple ofsuccess stories.... Acouple of kids wenton to the worlds andactually placed.”
