URBAN WASTE HEAT: HOW CAN I USE IT?Further research is needed to unlock urban waste heat potential, both considering technical and non-technical aspects

TECHNICAL ASPECTS- Fast cycling/high efficiency heat exchangers- Heat Pumps improvement (single effect COP increasing, volumes/CAPEX

reduction…)- Thermal Storage Integration- 4° Generation of District Heating Network (lower T)

NON- TECHNICAL ASPECTS- New Business Models and Contractual Arrangement- Standardization and Regulatory Framework- Installation and Maintenance Timing/costs similar to conventional systems

URBAN WASTE HEAT: HOW CAN I USE IT?

Waste heat detection and re-use is one key topic with respect to energy planning, particularly about sustainable H&C planning: easy-to-use support tools are needed!

Residential heating demand in Vienna, to be covered by waste heat from commercial sources*

*W. Loibl et al., «Waste-heat re-use from commercial sources in urban environments – identification of potentials and assessment of supply-demand matches, a Vienna case study “, Vol. 12, 2016, WSEAS TRANSACTIONS on ENVIRONMENT and DEVELOPMENT

Aspects to be taken into account to determine the technical potential: - Resource availability : kind of

resource, distance from end users, easiness to achieve the source

- Technical considerations that intervene in the energy conversion and/or use processes (efficiencies, temperature ranges, etc.).

- Demand size

PLANHEAT TARGETS

Directive 2012/27/EU aims to a comprehensive assessment of the potential for high efficiency CHP and DHC in order to define strategies for the decarbonisation of H&C systems.

Municipalities and other public bodies are encouraged to adopt sustainable energy efficiency plans with clear objectives

75% of the European citizens will live in urban areas in 2020 (increase to 84% by 2050)

However, public bodies face the lack of appropriate easy-to-use tools to support themin the definition, simulation and evaluation of their local plans, particularly about H&C

PROJECT OBJECTIVESThe main objective of PLANHEAT is to develop and validate through real use-cases an integrated georeferenced easy–to-use tool for the mapping, planningand simulation of H&C systems at local level. The tool will support local authorities in selecting, simulating and comparingalternative low carbon and economically sustainable scenarios for heating andcooling (from a panel of advanced technologies) that could balance theforecasted demand.

PLANHEAT TOOLSupport local authorities in

• Mapping the local available low carbonenergy sources (RES and Waste Heat)

• Mapping the forecasted demand for heatingand cooling

• Define and simulate alternative economicallyreliable scenarios (DHC, CHP, RES…)

• Understanding the interactions of the newscenarios with the existing infrastructures andnetworks (DHC, gas pipelines, electricity, sewage, transportation)

• Evaluate the impacts of the new solutionsthrough energetic, economic andenvironmental KPIs)

CONCLUSION- Waste heat from small scale urban industries, services and infrastructures still

provides a yet unmapped potential to meet the heating energy demands ofresidential quarters.

- Technological and Non-Technological Research is still needed to unlock thispotential.

- Waste heat detection and re-use is one key topic with respect to energy planning inparticularly for H&C purposes.

- Given that there is a substantial rise in the share of RES for power purposes at urbanlevel (PV, micro-wind) and a decline in RES for H&C systems, coupling waste heat withRES for thermal purpose and the use of HP powered by RES could be the best strategyfor the decarbonization of urban H&C systems

- Municipalities and local stakeholders need easy-to-use instruments and tool toevaluate their sustainable H&C potential (such as the PLANHEAT tool)
