Installation RequirementsApprovalsSea-Chest installations must be approved on a case-by-case basis with regard to the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime authority. The ship owner and shipyard performing the installation are responsible for obtaining installation approval.

Power supplyWe strongly recommend the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The UPS should have the ability to maintain power for 10 minutes. This allows shut off and retraction of the equipment in the case of a power failure. The Power supply must maintain power for a minimum 10 minutes.

Noise SourcesThere are two possible sources of Sonar noise. Turbulence caused by deformities or roughness in the hull plating, keel, anodes, other sonar sea-chests or rutter. These areas must be inspected during dry dock and repaired as best as possible. Note these areas in the manuals Notes section. The second cause of sonar noise is vibration, cracked, pitted or unbalanced propeller(s). The propeller must be thoroughly inspected and repairs made if necessary.

Dry DockEnsure proper clearance under sea-chest for sonar installation. Avoid placing supporting blocks in the area of the sea-chest. Note position of the sea-chest in the manuals Notes section.

WiringAll cables must be supported or protected along its entire length. Conduit or cable trays should be used. Cables must not be installed so as not to run in the areas of high-power supplies, antenna cables or other sources of interference.

VibrationVibration on any of the equipments must be monitored. Excessive vibration must have dampeners installed.

Temperature and HumidityAll equipments, unless otherwise specified, must be protected from extremes in temperature and humidity.

Sea-Chest Installation & InspectionThe MAQ was designed to fit into existing competitors sea-chest with little or no modifications.

he MAQ Sonar electronics is capable of driving three different frequency transducers. This is a generalized manual for all three types of transducers.

ApprovalsSea-Chest installations must be approved on a case-by-case basis with regard to the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime authority. The ship owner and shipyard performing the installation are responsible for obtaining installation approval.

Sea-Chest LocationThe Sea-Chest must be located approximately 1/3 of the vessels length from the bow. It must be located on the center line of the vessel or right next to the keel of the vessel. The Sea-Chest must be faired if the Sea-chest is off the side of the keel. Ensure the face of the transducer is unobstructed for transmission and reception. The Sea-Chest must be mounted Vertical to the Normal Trim Water Line or perpendicular to the water line during normal operation. Do not install Sea chest in an area where inlet or outlet pipes may cause turbulence or exhaust air or fluids that may effect the operation of the sonar.

Grounding and ZincMAQ Sonar’s Transducer Pipe, Transceiver and Interface Unit must be connected to the ships hull. Zinc Anodes must be installed on transducer pipes and inspected and replaced yearly if required. Poor grounding may cause excessive zinc erosion and possibly sonar noise.

INCLINOMETER ALIGNMENT

INSTALLATION- Inclinometer must be aligned for transmitter beam stabilization in the direction of the cursor. Stabilization is only available in track and search modes.- The inclinometer can be found inside the computer interface unit.- A sticker on the side of the inclinometer indicates the side, which must face the stern.- Loosen the thumbscrew on the inclinometer-mounting arm.- Position the inclinometer with the stern side facing the proper direction and level the bubble indicator on the top of the inclinometer. (As shown)- Tighten the thumbscrew firmly to fix the position of the inclinometer.

ELECTRONIC CALIBRATION- On the “STP” set-up panel of the sonar there is a selection for the type of inclinometer being used. Read the letter indicated on the top of the inclinometer and set the “INC” inclinometer type to the appropriate letter.- In order to further set-up the inclinometer on the “OPR” Panel under the “MC” mode control selection you must set the sonar to either “TR” track mode or “SR” search mode to adjust the inclinometer. - In order to further adjust the inclinometer there is a software adjustment.- On the “SYS” system panel 2 readouts will appear port & bow. (Shown in blue rectangle) these 2 readouts will indicate how close to level the inclinometer has been installed. “BW” bow adjust & “PT” port adjust must be adjusted to zero the port and bow readouts.

TEST- After adjusting the level and direction of the inclinometer the

stabilizer can be tested by tilting down to an angle that displays a bottom ring in “OD” omni directional mode. As the vessel rolls this ring should move in and out. Set the “MC” mode control to “TR” track mode. Position the sector directly off the port or starboard side of the vessel. The bottom ring should no longer move in and out or the movement should be reduced significantly.
