You’re disappointed and defeated. You may even be wondering if real lifestyle change is even possible.

“We really can change behavior,” as-serts lifestyle change expert, Dr. Howard Rankin, creator of www.scienceofyou.com, and founder of The American Brain Asso-ciation. “Problem is, most people try to do it through sheer willpower alone, and that won’t work. Without a more comprehen-sive strategy in place, you’re just setting yourself up for failure,” he says.

Dr. Rankin has identified five tried-and-true keys to behavior change:

STOkE YOuR MOTIvATIONMost of us are in the habit of beating

ourselves up if we lack motivation. Some-how, we think we’ve failed if we just can’t muster the energy to go to the gym or to

pay the stack of bills that’s accumulated. But that’s normal. Motivation isn’t static; it ebbs and flows just like the tide. The key is to develop ways of keeping motivation at the forefront of your mind enough of the time to make a difference.

“People don’t realize that motivation is about emotion and passion, says Dr. Rankin. “It’s the why that’s going to influ-ence your actions,” he says.

Dr. Rankin suggests coming up with a mantra that captures your why (for example, ‘Fit at Fifty, Free at Sixty’) and visualizing both what you don’t want (you eating junk food and having a heart attack) and what you do want (you exercising and enjoying an outing with your family). In most instances, he points out, it’s a fear of loss and negative consequences that kick-starts motivation the hardest.

Keeping New Year’s Resolutions Alive By Dottie DeHart

New year’s resolutions are fast becoming a joke. We all make them, but how many of us actually keep them? if you’re like most americans, you vowed that you’ll lose weight, spend more time with your family, get your finances under control, or start working out. But by march, nothing’s really changed…

Page 17: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

FIND A WAY TO SELF-MONITOR

A great deal of human behavior is done on autopilot — so if you want something to change, you’ll have to pay attention to your own behavior and experience. The more you’re aware of what you’re doing, the more you can control it.

“You have to find ways of monitoring yourself,” Dr. Rankin asserts. “Most people write down their behavior patterns, but you might just as effectively talk into a recorder. Not only does keeping a record help you pay attention to what you’re do-ing, it allows for subsequent analysis that will help you understand what prompts your behavior, and any patterns it might fall into.”

Dr. Rankin suggests recording every instance of a successful or unsuccessful

Keeping New Year’s Resolutions Alive By Dottie DeHart

behavior in the first week. Thereafter, pick one day a week for self-monitoring.

HONE YOuR SELF-CONTROL SkILLS

While willpower goes only so far without good habits to bolster it, it’s still an important part of the lifestyle change equation. Self-control is a critical skill when changing a behavior.

“There are two broad approaches to managing temptation,” he explains. “The first is avoidance. But that’s not always possible. A better strategy is to confront your temptation and develop a way to deal with it. Visualization is a valuable tool be-cause it allows you to ‘practice’ your self-control without being exposed to real-life dangers and pitfalls. On a daily basis 21

Once we get what we want — the shining star — we want more. He begins to seem ordinary, not because he has changed, but because he hasn’t. We decide he should twinkle from more angles or change colors now and then.

You have to decide if you want to keep trying to satisfy your insatiable ego or satisfy your heart.

Keep in mind that what you don’t appre-ciate has a way of slipping through your fingers. Remember the opportunities you took for granted, or the friend you thought would always be there? They’re gone.

“Women complain, men leave,” says Noelle C. Nelson, Ph.D., author of “Your Man Is Wonderful.”

If you’re thinking that nothing could drive your man away, you might ask yourself if he’s still there emotionally. As Nelson explains, they don’t necessarily leave physically. Women tend to speak up loudly about what’s wrong; men tend to simply bow out.

That probably brings to mind those times he’s walked away in the middle of an argument.

You know from your own experience that men don’t like to ask for help — they don’t even want to ask for directions.

Neither do they like to fall short of what you want, let alone of what you expect. And when they do, they often withdraw. That doesn’t mean they won’t get back on the horse, but be careful of beating them up regularly. It doesn’t work.

If you notice what’s positive — he works hard, plays with the kids or cooks for you — and say thank you, he’ll think he has a shot at pleasing you. He wants to please you, but when it feels he can’t, he’s apt to leave. And what you really want is his presence.

You want him to see you, hear you, un-derstand you and back you up. You want him to care. Give him what you want.

Shift your focus to what you can appreci-ate. And when you can’t seem to appreciate what he appreciates, try to understand it.

Give your sweetheart the benefit of the doubt. Assume that he has a viable view-point. When you don’t get it, ask questions instead of making accusations or fueling your resentment. Act like you’re on the same team with the same goals.

Then when you have a suggestion, you can present it in a constructive way. And he will receive it.

When you give your attention to what you are grateful for, you nurture it. You

you need to imagine yourself successfully resisting difficult situations.”

“If temptation occurs when you’re not seeking it out, resist it,” says Dr. Rankin. “Walk away. Leave the building. Go to the restroom. Make a phone call!”

IDENTIFY AND MANAGE “BACkSLIDING” RED FLAGS

You may have noticed: Your moods, outlooks, and attitudes tend to change almost constantly — and they play an important part in the decisions we make and the way we behave. Many people are more prone to make unhealthy decisions, give in to temptation when they’re tired, stressed, or angry.

To help you identify and then man-age self-destructive states, ask yourself what moods, physical states (e.g., pain, fatigue), people, places, and times of day are associated with self-destructive states. Then brainstorm how you can avoid

them, and who can help you handle them effectively.

TAkE A HARD LOOk AT THE “OTHER PEOPLE” FACTOROthers have a huge influence over our

behavior, so you’ll have to factor in other people when going after your resolution-keeping goals.

“As much as possible, avoid people who aren’t acting the way you want to act and seek out those who have the same health and life goals as you,” Dr. Rankin advises. “I’m a big advocate of support groups, because they are very effective agents of change. They give you helpful informa-tion, hold you accountable, and make sure you stay connected to your motivation,” he adds.

If you take one resolution at a time and build behavior change slowly, you’ll be amazed at how much healthier your life will become. ∆

also help to make the relationship feel safe, safe enough to open up emotionally rather than withdrawing. Then the star begins to twinkle, twinkle, twinkle.

Perhaps the most ordinary thing about

him — and you — is his sensitivity to rejec-tion. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to feed your ego by shooting holes in his. Get involved on a deeper level and feed each other’s spirits. Shine together! ∆

Here are five ways to prevent your teenagers from falling to such temptation, assuring that they are attending school to learn rather than to learn how to cheat.

CHECk YOuR CHILD’S HOMEWORk EvERY NIGHT

This advice may sound a little intense and age inappropriate by the time your child is in high school, but how else can parents truly know what their teenager are doing at school and what he/she is actu-ally learning? A good sign that a teenager is cheating is the absence of substantive work. Naturally, teenagers can claim that they didn’t have any homework, and while such a claim is possible, it is highly unlikely night after night. When students do not ever open textbooks or complete

assignments from them, the parents should also be suspicious. Yes, teachers can give materials online or as attachments (and increasingly do so in this cyberage), but again the students should be able to show concretely how they have completed those assignments too.

CREATE A DEvICE-FREE zONE OF AT LEAST AN HOuR A DAY FOR

STuDYINGThis approach is particularly important

to take during summer vacations and holidays. Most teenagers are so addicted to the Internet that their lives seem bar-ren without being able to text message a friend or to check online constantly about anything or everything. Yes, students can multitask, but can they unitask with the

Five Tips To Curb Your Child’s Cheating

WaysBy Dr. Michael Hartnett

As technology has evolved to provide a vast wealth of information at anytime, anywhere, cheating has never been easier. From classmates receiving completed homework via a mass email to answers popping up on i-phones during a test, cheating has become as simple as text messaging.

Page 24: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

March - April 2011 24

intense concentration that is often required to do an assignment well? Any hour a day by themselves without connections to cy-berspace or to their friends is an hour of studying and learning they have devoid of cheating. It gives a great opportunity to improve their concentration skills without distractions, so necessary to achieve well on standardized tests like the SAT and to be better prepared for the demands of college and the workplace.

Indeed an argument teenagers will make is that they need the internet/computer to complete whatever assignment is in front of them. Unfortunately, they are often right, especially given the fact that they will type up many of their assignments, so much so that a laptop almost becomes an appendage of the student. However, teenagers also greatly exaggerate their need for the computer and if you hold firm and fast to the one-hour rule, students will easily be able to fill that time with studying and still have enough time with use their various electronic devices to complete their assignments. In fact, they are more likely to allocate their time efficiently rather than dawdling in text-chats with their friends because they need to use the computer more as a workstation tool than an enter-tainment and social center.

GIvE YOuR TEENAGERS PRACTICE TESTS THE DAY BEFORE AN ExAM

If you know what they are studying and see from what materials they are studying, then you can determine whether they are truly engaged in the learning process. If their materials are sparse and generated from websites, then you know they are either cheating or performing poorly.

TALk TO YOuR TEENAGERS HONESTLY AND REALISTICALLY

ABOuT CHEATINGThat means you cannot be too self-

righteous or judgmental about cheating. Acknowledge that cheating is prevalent, and understand that you are asking for your teenagers to be exceptional instead of conforming to a pervasive cheating

culture. In other words, you will have to address some hard questions that every red-blooded American teenager will ask: “Mom and Dad, if I’m getting good grades and succeeding in school, what does it matter if I cheat? I’m learning how to suc-ceed and thrive and isn’t that what school and life really about?” These questions become particularly challenging when your teenagers complain about learning subject material far removed from career interests: “How is reading Hamlet going to help me become a mechanical engineer?” Unfortunately, a cerebral response about developing critical thinking and analyti-cal skills probably won’t cut it with your teenagers. Your best bet may well be to explain how skills in diverse fields make someone more adaptable and marketable. Explain how mental conditioning is similar to physical conditioning in that exercising the areas you are least interested in can increase strength and confidence overall, since by eliminating weaknesses.

Will your teenagers embrace this argu-ment? Probably not, but at least they’ll better understand why you are committed to their learning rather than their cheating, why you are checking their homework every night, why you are taking away their computer an hour a night, and why you are giving them practice tests.

AvOID CLICHéSDo not tell your teenagers “You know if

you cheat, you are only cheating yourself.” That’s a pretty abstract notion and when teenagers are getting A’s cheating, then the cliché seems even more obtuse. And I wouldn’t try “Cheaters never prosper.” The truth is they do prosper. Cheaters may be ignorant and morally corrupt, but your sons and daughters have seen too many do well in school.

However, most teenagers buy the argu-ment that cheating will only get them so far. Ultimately, you have your own tough question to ask them: “What knowledge and skills will you have after you’re done cheating away your high school years?” ∆

Here are some ideas on how to gain a few extra minutes in the day.

BE E-MAIL FABuLOuSSetting up e-mail filters is one of the

best ways to keep from wasting precious minutes trying to sift though loads of unwanted e-mails just to get to your important messages. It also saves you

time from unwanted, unimportant e-mail interruptions. Also, cancel your “sign-ups” to daily e-mails you no longer read or care about. A good rule of thumb: If you skip over a particular blast three or more days a week, you really don’t need it clogging up your inbox. You may also want to ditch RSS feeds that you aren’t reading.

Get Organized

And Gain Time

By Sarah Welch and Alicia Rockmore

Are you wishing you had time to meet a friend for coffee or even just read a book? Just the simple act of getting a little more organized in some areas can unlock quite a bit of “free” time.

DITCH PERFECTIONDo the bed sheets really need to be

tucked in perfectly when you make the bed? No. If your children make their own beds, resist the urge to remake them. Do you have to clean the whole living room before you go to bed? Probably not. Pick one or two tasks a day that soak up more time than you’d like and “imperfect” them, such as vacuuming quickly instead of mak-ing perfect lines in the carpet.

uNPLuGThis sounds simple, but if you have a

mobile device, the thought of turning it off for 30 minutes or an hour may cause a little heartburn. But we urge you to 52

Personal real estate has been trans-formed from an investment back into its pri-mary function: housing. So it makes sense to see if it is possible to reduce monthly expenses by trading down.

The way to look at this situation is to figure out all real estate options and then crunch the numbers to see if it pays to sell

and buy a smaller place or to rent. Here are some things to consider before you make your move:

WHAT WILL YOuR CuRRENT HOuSE SELL FOR?

You probably have a feel of this already, but it makes sense to start by figuring out

what you can get for your current house. Be realistic, if not conservative. When you go through this type of analysis, enlist the help of an experienced local real estate agent. And take a careful look at recent sales of comparable properties.

“The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“By cleverly combining complementary colors they have created a striking intensity in the palette. These unique color combi-nations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes.”

Eiseman notes that designers have taken their color cues for spring from exotic destinations like Africa, India, Peru and Turkey to satisfy a consumer’s need to es-cape everyday challenges with intriguing color combinations that transport them to foreign lands.

“The exotic locales of Marrakech and Morocco that inspired the bohemian influ-ences of Yves Saint Laurent in the ‘70s,” says Ken Downing, fashion director of Nei-man Marcus. “Hot corals and deep pinks punctuated with brilliant blues ignite the carefree spirit of the coming season.”

And what is THE color of the new year?

Pantone has named it “Honeysuckle.” “Flirtatious Honeysuckle is a feel-good

hue that brings a festive sense of playful-ness to this season’s palette,” says Eiseman. “This vibrant pinkish-red for both apparel and cosmetics makes consumers feel alive, and it’s a post-winter pick-me-up.”

And you can expect to see this hot pink showing up not only in eye-catching ap-parel for men and women. How about a new pink tie for your “honey” or a new pashmina scarf for yourself? Consider making the intense color part of your wedding plans. You can find “Honey-suckle” wedding attendant apparel and accessories at Dessy, a manufacturer of bridesmaid, social occasion and flower girl dresses.

You’ll even see the striking color in home accessories — patterned pillows, bedspreads, small appliances and tabletop accessories. And if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your living spaces, why not use the energetic color to brighten up a wall in your kitchen or hallway? This spring, it’s time to smell the honeysuckle and think pink! ∆

Put some romance into your wardrobe. Start by softening up:

WITH FLIRTY DRESSESThe florals are flourishing this spring

in watercolor palettes and neon brights. Artistic graphic prints are one of the newest ways designers have brushed up on romantic dresses, which gives them a decidedly vintage flair.

WITH BOW BLOuSESWhether you wear one by itself with

a pair of soft trousers or layer it under a menswear suit, the silky blouses with statement-making bows are your best bet.

The New Romantics: The Soft Touch By Sharon Mosley

WITH EMBELLISHED TOPSThink glistening sequins, metallic studs,

or go for breezy crochet tops: the perfect companion for the season’s longer maxi-skirts.

WITH FuLLER SkIRTSPencil skirts may still be a serious style-

maker, but fuller A-line skirts in soft, floaty fabrics are another way to inject some freshness into your wardrobe. The newest? Longer mid-calf lengths!

WITH FLOWING PANTSA refreshing change from the skinny

pants of the past year, trousers are turning up in easy-going wide-leg silhouettes this spring. Team them with snug tops and fitted jackets.

WITH DOLMAN SLEEvESThese roomy sleeves make any top or

dress more interesting. And they’re the perfect way to be cool and still cover up bare arms.

WITH FROTHY LACEInspired by vintage lingerie, lace is

showing up in everything from dresses to skirts to tops; it is perfect for spring. Just throw on a fur or sweater if the weather doesn’t cooperate!

WITH NEuTRALNeon brights may be all the rage this

spring, but if you’re a romantic softie, then stick to neutrals and stay cool

This season, you’ll have lots of fun footwear to spend your cash on, but just remember that no matter how beautiful the shoes look, if they aren’t comfortable, don’t buy them — unless you want to leave them on the shelf in your closet and just look at them.

Here are the best new shoe trends to step out in this spring and summer:

GET YOuR GROOvE ONWith the ‘70s making their way back

onto the fashion runways, it’s no surprise that the shoes would follow. Look for retro styles with big-bottom wedges in straw, wood and cork to lift you higher and higher.

Go for the clunky heel, such as in glit-tering gold at Stuart Weitzman (www.stuartweitzman.com). But if you’re not into the distinct possibility of twisting an ankle, there are lots of wedge sandals with lower heels that might do just fine. Check out the

sleek metallic ones from Kate Spade (www.katespade.com).

COLOR YOuR SHOE WORLDEye-popping color is at your feet this

spring. In bright multi-colors or all-over saturated hues, one pair of these playful shoes is all you need to turn heads and get noticed. At Dior, Gucci and Prada, some of the newest technicolor shoes are artful masterpieces. These are shoes you can hang on the walls of your closet!

BE A LADYSlingbacks, anyone? Yes, they are just

the opposite of the chunky shoe trends, but there comes a time when you may want to dress up a little and go for more of a re-fined, glamorous look. Kitten-heel heights with pointy toes are favorites of first lady Michelle Obama. When they sparkle with jewels, they’re even more festive (www.jimmychoo.com).

LOAF A LITTLEWho doesn’t want to just slide into a

nice pair of practical shoes every once in a while, especially on the weekends? Finding a great pair of flat loafers is one of life’s best moments. Whether it’s a pair of traditional leather driving mocs or a trendier pair of hot pink, patent leather slip-ons, the loafer is a must-have for comfort anytime of the week. Check out the sunny orange tasseled ones at Banana Republic (www.bananarepublic.com).

GET ON YOuR PLATFORMThis spring, you will find many pumps

with much more personality than those trusty little black ones you’ve bought every year for the past decade. Instead, how about switching to a pair of platform pumps in a whimsical animal print or in sophisticated and gorgeous turquoise suede from Jessica Simpson? (www.jes-sicasimpsoncollection.com)

THINk PREPPYAnother comfy shoe option — the espa-

drille — is making its way back into our footwear favorites for spring and summer. And these espadrilles are anything but basic and boring. Check out the glitzy ones at Express or the bright florals by Etienne Aigner at Macy’s. These new versions are perfect to wear with cropped jeans or casual dresses.

LOOk FOR STuDSThe past year’s gladiator sandals are still

fighting for survival on the fashion scene. But this spring, you’ll see them given even more sexy staying power when sprinkled with metallic studs and wrapped with rope ankle cuffs or leather lace ties. ∆

Outdoor Kitchens

Can Be As Well Equipped As Those Inside

By Gretchen Mckay

Today’s outdoor kitchen is often as nice as the one inside, with every imaginable appliance and creature comfort. they’re also getting bigger, with defined spaces not just for cooking and eating but also separate “rooms” for socializing with family and friends.

It’s still built around a grill, of course. But refrigerators increasingly are part of the outdoor culinary landscape, along with icemakers, warming trays and artisan pizza ovens. Elaborate ventilation sys-tems control grease and keep smoke from perfuming the air. For people who like to socialize, there’s also an array of beverage

coolers and drink accessories.Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet offers a

draft beer system that can serve up to three different kegs along with undercounter and free-standing wine coolers. The Michigan company also sells outdoor freezers and freezer drawers with vinyl-coated racks for frosting beer mugs and martini glasses and

Page 47: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

47 Hi Class Living

storing vodka and other liquors. For high-end kitchens, the story often

begins with a top-of-the-line grill. Kalama-zoo’s 900 series hybrid cooks with charcoal, wood and gas through a unique drawer system and can sear at temperatures up to 800 degrees. It also sells a wok-ready cooktop that delivers 32,000 Btus of cook-ing power.

Wolf, Thermador, Dacor and Viking also offer high-performance grills, along with Lynx, whose largest grill measures a whopping 54 inches. Weber’s juggernaut S-650 is a little more affordable, but still boasts six stainless-steel burners, a flush-mounted side burner, a dedicated smoker and an infra-red rear-mounted rotisserie for cooking entire chickens, turkeys and large cuts of meat.

A bit more unusual is Hammacher

Schlemmer ’s electric indoor/outdoor teppanyaki grill. Mounted on a wheeled, stainless-steel cart, it makes pancakes for breakfast as easy as filet mignon and lobster tails for company. It comes with a pull-out hornbeam cutting board for chopping vegetables and an integrated knife block.

It wouldn’t be a kitchen without plenty of counter space on which to slice and dice and salt and pepper. The most popu-lar choices include natural stone such as granite and quartz, which are impervious to the weather. Another option is cast concrete, which is easy to maintain and can be colored and customized to any shape or size.

Companies such as Cal Spa and Bull Outdoor Products eliminate the need for custom work. Bull’s Angus BBQ Island

Page 48: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

TRADING SPACES — From Pg. 31

sits on a stucco base (10 colors) and holds a four-burner grill and stainless-steel refrigerator; the tile countertop comes in five colors.

Entertaining can be messy, so acces-sories that allow quick clean-up also are appearing in showrooms. DCS’s Liberty combo grill pairs two 17,000-Btu burners with a sink. To extend the outdoor room’s life through three seasons, there are also a variety of patio and tabletop heaters (gas, electric and propane). And they don’t have to be the stainless-steel models you find on restaurant patios. Sumatra electric patio heaters from Improvements look like decorative table and floor lamps. All Backyard Fun has an 8-foot-tall copper patio heater shaped like a palm tree that pumps out 40,000 Btus. For the dog days

of summer, it comes equipped with a misting system.

Fireplaces and fire pits are another must-have in the well-equipped outdoor room, either custom designed or of the modular variety. And don’t forget about theater systems. Amazon.com sells a LCD projec-tor with a pair of portable speakers and a 72-inch inflatable screen that takes just five minutes to inflate. For more permanent entertaining, Hammacher Schlemmer of-fers a 32-inch weather-resistant outdoor HD TV with an anti-reflective screen and all-weather exterior that repels insects, rain and dirt. Frontgate’s television sets come with 23-, 32-, 46- and 55-inch screens.

Arbors and gazebos often shelter sepa-rate grilling, dining and entertainment areas. ∆

in head-to-toe white or mix them with creamy tans.

WITH jEWELRYCharms are charming this spring, espe-

cially when hanging from a jeweled neck-lace. Sparkling pendants are also a great way to soften up your spring image.

WITH STRAPPY SANDALSThe stiletto is back in bold colors and

glamorous embellishments. Sky-high heels

are not necessary, unless you are not step-ping outside the house.

With polished lipsRed lips are always romantic, but this

spring, the pretty pinks and corals are smacking it up on the beauty scene.

WITH TOuSLED HAIRSoft and romantic hair is long and loose

and set off by center parts. Chic updos and twisted chignons are also making a style statement. ∆

THE NEW ROMANTICS — From Pg. 39

nance. A smaller home could save money on every front, so to make an informed decision, you need to really understand these numbers.

As an example, if you’re currently spending $3,000 a month on your house, and a smaller house would cut that by $200, it’s probably not worth your while, especially given the cost of selling and moving (see next bullet). But if you could lower your housing expense by $1,000 a month, that’s money you could start put-ting in the bank.

WHAT COSTS WILL YOu INCuR BY SELLING AND MOvING?

It’s expensive to sell a home and buy a new one. You’ll incur brokerage commis-sions on the sale of your existing house (typically 6 percent; on a $400,000 house, that’s $24,000).

You may also have to pay a transfer tax on the sale. And if you have significant equity, you might have to pay a capital gains tax.

And finally, don’t forget moving ex-penses. These one-time expenses could eat

Page 49: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

49 Hi Class Living

up a lot of your monthly savings, so ask yourself: Is it worth doing?

HOW MuCH HOuSE DO YOu NEED?Obviously, before you act, you need to

have a good sense of how much house you need so you can see what’s available in your area, to buy or rent.

There is one more subjective consider-ation: Many people find they like having less house to care for as they get older. A smaller place, a condominium or even a rental may free you to spend more time on other things you love!

Don’t overlook renting; rentals are very sometimes favorably priced relative to home ownership.

Finally, what will you do with the money you save? Consider earmarking most of the savings for your IRAs, Roth IRAs or 401(k)s. Remember, if you’re over 50, you can make additional “catch-up” contributions to these plans. ∆

Like any plant, they’ll thrive in the right conditions. The trick is sizing up your indoor environment and choosing the orchids that will be happy there. Three of the best orchids for windowsill gardening are: Paphiopedilum, also called

paphs; Cattleyas, catts for short; and Phalaenopsis or phals. Among them, you’ll find colors, fragrances and sizes to fit any space.

Paphs are also known as lady slip-pers for a jutting, chin-like pouch that forms their lower flower petals.

Orchids Brighten Home With Little Effort

By Joe Lamp’l

Orchids are beautiful and fascinating plants. But the thought of growing orchids, especially indoors, is intimidating for lots of people. Despite their reputation for being finicky flower divas, orchids aren’t difficult to grow.

March-April 2011 50

Page 51: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

The white, green, yellow, red or pink blooms are shaded, striped and cov-ered with spots. These orchids bloom off and on all year with filtered light, though their flowering season is mid-fall through spring.

Catts are stunning and versatile. They’re available in every size, shape, color, fragrance and bloom time you could want. They’re also the most confusing, because they’ve been crossbred to create many hybrids. Look for names such as Brassavola, Rhynchoaelia and Epidendrum or an entirely new genus, Brassoepiden-drum. They’re all catts.

Phals, or moth orchids, have an arching flower spike covered with clouds of blooms for weeks or months at a time. They’re divided into stan-dard, novelty and mini flora varieties. The standards have large white, pink and candy-striped blooms. Novelties are the most fragrant, in colors of yel-low, orange, red and green.

When buying any orchid, choose one that’s already flowering since it’s the only way to really see what you are getting. Look for uniform color and shape. Splotches on leaves or petals may indicate a virus. Leaves should be an even, medium green with no

streaks. Roots should be fat and white with pale green tips. These orchids are epiphytes; they gather nutrients from air and water, not soil. They should be sold in an orchid potting mix made of bark, peat moss and Perlite. And that medium should be firm and damp to dry, not soggy. Bypass orchids sold in soil; their roots have likely been smothered or damaged.

Orchids aren’t picky about light once they’ve flowered, but light is critical before they bloom. Give them at least six hours a day. Phals and paphs are low-light orchids that prefer an east, west or shaded south window. Catts do best in brighter, south-facing spots. Use sheer curtains to filter harsh sunlight, it can burn the leaves, turning them pale green. If you don’t have any suitable windows, try a 40-watt fluorescent light. Hang it about a foot over the orchids 12 to 14 hours a day.

These plants like it 70 to 80 degrees in the daytime, 10 degrees cooler at night. If you have a winter-blooming phal, put it in the basement or outside in 55 to 60 de-gree fall air for a few nights to encourage

try it. Your Blackberry can wait 30 minutes. It’s not a long time, but it is long enough for you to regroup and figure out how to tackle the rest of your day. Even turning it on “silent” during your lunch break is OK. Literally, 30 minutes is not the end of the world; it’s liberating.

DO IT ALONENormally we don’t advise this, but if

you have something you really want to get off your plate, like scrapbooking pictures or reorganizing a file cabinet, do it alone and when no one else is home. Otherwise, you’ll be interrupted and frustrated that a 30-60-minute task takes you all day.

DO IT WITH OTHERSMany hands do make light work. Clean-

ing the garage, doing laundry and washing and drying the dishes are tasks you should

budding. Give them all 40 percent to 80 percent humidity by setting pots in a tray filled with water and gravel. To prevent the risk of wicking excess moisture into the potting medium, be sure the pot is on the gravel, not in the water.

Overwatering is the quickest way to kill an orchid. Wait until the medium is completely dry before watering. I use 20-10-10 liquid fertilizer diluted 4-to-1 once a week to feed catts and phals, every other week with paphs. I flood clear, room-temperature water over the medium until the water runs out the bottom, and then pour the fertilizer solution. Don’t wet the foliage or crown of the plant.

A light mist of rubbing alcohol once a week will take care of any scale insects. Ordinary cinnamon will stop fungi. Just sprinkle a bit on the wet infected spots and the crown.

Orchids can be a little tricky, but giving them the ideal environment — along with a bit of time and attention — will reward you with a great show. ∆

not try to do alone. With you washing and your son rinsing, a 20-minute task can take you five minutes instead.

STOP MuLTITASkINGFive years ago, multitasking was all the

rage. Well, as popular as it was in theory, multitasking just tacks more time onto your day. Instead, focus on one task at a time. If you were trying to do three things at once, it would probably take you an extra 10 minutes for each task, resulting in 30 minutes of wasted time. However, if you concentrate on one task, you will get it done faster and more efficiently.

LEARN TO SAY NOThis one’s simple. If you don’t have the

time (or simply don’t want to give up your free time) to make posters for the ballet recital, that’s OK! You don’t have to do

Page 53: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

53 Hi Class Living

everything, and saying no is a great way to get more time back in your day.

GET OTHERS TO SAY YESYour kids and spouse are probably really

good at finding excuses to say no. First of all, say, “Would you please...” “Could you ...” triggers a thought process of “Well, I could, but I am going to make an excuse because I don’t want to.” However, the phrase “Would you please” triggers that you really need and would appreciate help. Try it.

DELEGATEWhether it’s a chore board or having

your spouse take over more errands will certainly take more tasks off your plate. Just remember to fully relinquish the task at hand. If it isn’t done exactly how you usually do it, that’s OK.

STOP PROCRASTINATINGHave a vacation in two weeks? Start

packing. Now. Does your daughter have a school project due next month? Get crack-ing. When your mind is always scrambling at the last minute, even simple tasks be-come overwhelming. If you can schedule ahead, you can avoid the overwhelmed rush that wastes all of your free time. ∆

Here are a few tips for transporting a room from bland to beautiful with just the right upholstery.

Before you ever look at a swatch of fabric, you will need to develop an overall design for the room. Then create a floor plan that meets your design goals. For instance, if you’re working on your family room, will the configuration of furnish-ings give you conversation groupings? Allow you to see the TV? Ensure there is good traffic flow through the room? Some people frequently move furnishings to keep their spaces fresh and interesting. But I have found that there is one floor plan that typically works best for a space, so once I find it, I keep my furniture right where it is.

Often people looking for a new sofa or

chair and are overwhelmed and discour-aged. Usually, it’s because they have not yet come up with a design plan for the space and are trying to find the right furniture without really knowing what they need. That’s why it’s preferable to develop a plan for their space, breaking it down into several steps so it can be done in stages, if needed

Once you select the right piece of furni-ture for your room — one that matches the scale, style and function you’re going for — it’s time to think about upholstery fab-rics and custom finishes. If you’re not sure what sort of upholstery fabric you’d like, flip through stacks of decorating books and magazines. What types of upholstered pieces catch your eye? Start an idea file filled with examples of pieces you love.

Great Upholstery Can Transform

A Room By Mary Carol Garrity

When picking upholstery, it’s important to find the perfect combination of textiles for custom furniture so the overall look is singular and sensational.

Page 55: Mar-April 2011 Hi Class Living

Ask yourself three key questions:

HOW DO YOu LIvE?The answer will help you pick out

fabric that is not only attractive, but also functional. How will you use the piece of furniture? Do you have pets and kids who will be sitting on it? Rich listens carefully as customers describe their lifestyles, then he zeros in on the fabrics that will look lovely for the long haul.

WHAT ELSE WILL BE IN THE ROOM WITH THE NEW PIECE

OF FuRNITuRE?Do you have other upholstered pieces,

rugs or window treatments you want to har-monize with your new piece of furniture? Or are you starting with a clean slate?

HOW DO YOu WANT TO FEEL WHEN YOu WALk IN THIS ROOM?

Textiles evoke emotions, so it’s impor-tant that the fabrics you pick create the right mood.

One way to customize sofas is by adding a contrasting welting. Contrasting welting really highlights the architecture of the upholstered piece and refines it. If you’ve pick a neutral, textured upholstery fabric, simply adding a contrasting welting will transform it from ho-hum to impeccable.

In my home, I’ve opted to upholster my furnishings in a mix of white and cream fabrics that are rich on texture. Then, I spark them up with a constantly changing medley of pillows. It’s amazing how the look of an entire room is changed just by a quick substitution of pillows. ∆

The spice has long been prized for its potent anti-inflammatory and pain-re-lieving effects, but scientific evidence to support these properties was scarce. In a recent study at the Univer-sity of Georgia, researchers confirmed that daily ginger consumption significantly reduces muscle pain caused by exercise by 25%.

Ginger’s anti-inflamma-tory properties also work wonders in the gastroin-testinal tract. Long before commercially produced ginger ale became a popular remedy for stomach upset, ancient healers prescribed ginger tea to soothe a vari-ety of digestive symptoms, especially nausea and vom-iting.

Research suggests that

taking up to one gram of ginger daily is a safe and effective remedy for nausea associated with morning sickness during pregnancy. Most experts recommend using ginger only as needed to alleviate nausea during pregnancy, rather than tak-ing it on a regular basis.

Ginger is so effective at alleviating nausea that it is often used by individuals undergoing chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer.

In a government funded study of 644 cancer pa-tients at the University of Rochester Medical Center, researchers found that che-motherapy-induced nausea was reduced by 40 percent among those patients who took ginger supplements along with prescrip-

BEGIN WITH TOuGH LOvE Take a minute to think about your activ-

ity level over the past few months. Did taco chips and sloth add an extra 5 pounds? Take off your clothes and stand in front of a mirror. Don’t judge. Don’t feel guilty. This is your body. Be happy you have one. Now visualize your body as you’d like it to feel. Lighter. Stronger. Filled with joy. Relax, and smile -- you look dreamy. Know that you can grow into this new vision of yourself if you are patient, persistent and willing to scrub old habits for new ones. Make the choice to spring into action, starting today.

SET YOuR GOALSThe success of your springtime tune-up

depends on your willingness to set some specific, achievable goals. Want to run your first 5k this summer? Bicycle your first 50-miler? Stop eating red meat four days a week? Once you have one to three clear goals, you need a plan (written is best) for making it happen. Step-by-step, working alone or with support, taking ac-tion toward your goal adds confidence and success to your daily routine, and from that place, the experts say, real behavior change can happen.

At the same time, allow for backsliding. Change isn’t linear, but it will happen over time if you enjoy the process and never give up.

SIGN uP FOR SOMETHING NEW. Are you tired of tennis? Down on wall-

For cancer patients, supplemental ginger may do more than just ease nausea. Recent research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center suggests that the spice may have potent anti-cancer properties, as well.

In laboratory studies, the scientists

found that application of ginger to ovar-ian cancer cells caused the cells to die. In a number of different ovarian cancer cell lines, ginger appeared to induce cell death at a similar or better rate than a platinum-based chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat ovarian cancer.

Although the study results are prelimi-nary, the scientists are hopeful that ginger will have similar anti-cancer effects in human trials.

most people.Ginger has an excellent safety profile

and is associated with few unwelcome side effects. Still, it’s wise to consult your physician before using it on a regular basis, especially if you’re taking other medica-tions or if you have any problems with your health.

For most healthy folks, ginger is a safe and effective remedy for nausea, stom-achaches and muscle pain. The medicinal plant is available in most health food stores in a variety of forms, including capsules, teas and powders.

If you buy commercially prepared gin-ger ale, ginger tea or ginger snap cookies, be sure to read the label. Many products contain only artificial flavors rather than real ginger.

If you want to prepare your own, you can buy fresh or dried ginger root at many supermarkets or health food stores. After washing, chopping or grinding the root, you can add it to foods or use it to make a tasty tea.

Even if you don’t need to use ginger for its medicinal properties, you can still enjoy its distinctive, delicious flavor. ∆
