ENGLISH AND DRAMA NEWS

Field Study Day Field Study Day was a success for Year 12 students. We spent the morning focusing on curriculum areas for English Standard, Advanced, ESL and English Studies then at 1pm we headed down to Event Cinema at Burwood Plaza and saw Lady Bird which was enjoyed by all students, and a fabulous reward for working hard all day.

Year 12 English Field Study Day

Preliminary HSC Extension English Our Preliminary HSC Extension English students and their teacher, Kate Stavert, have been exploring the exciting new syllabus course which fosters autonomous learning and encourages students to engage with multimodal texts. Debating The 2018 Premier’s Debating Challenge for Years 7-12 is currently underway, with after-school debating workshops for students competing in an internal debating competition for BGHS students and some students competing in the inter-schools competition.

In debating, students are encouraged to adopt conflicting positions on topics relevant to themselves and their community. In this way, debaters learn to see the world from the perspective of others, while developing both the skills and the confidence to argue confidently in a public forum.

Debating workshops

Workshops are run on Tuesdays (for Years 7 & 11) and Thursdays (Years 8, 9 & 10) to assist our debaters to develop skills in public speaking, reasoning, teamwork and time-management. Our aim is to help students to think and argue critically about current affairs and issues concerning education, sport, politics, the law, media and the environment.

Thanks to Tristan Carey and Trish Coulson for facilitating Debating at Burwood Girls High School.

TELL THEM FROM ME student feedback survey (Term 1, 2018)

Burwood Girls High School values the input of our students, parents and staff and for six years we have been involved in the Department of Education initiative: Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

As a direct result from feedback from past surveys we have implemented a number of strategies including:

extended STEM and STEAM learning opportunities implementing a program to extend our high potential

learners and strengthen engagement of all students revised and extended co-curricular activities increased student leadership opportunities extended catering for EAL/D students and their families broadened curriculum choices such as Futures Learning,

Engineering Challenges, Philosophy and increased languages available to Year 8

continued to build our communication processes with parents.

The survey is conducted online and is confidential. It typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete and will be administered during school hours between 26 and 27 March. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey have been emailed to parents and sent home with students and is available on the BGHS website and parent

MESSAGE FROM CAPTAINS & PREFECTS Our vision for 2018 as captains of Burwood Girls is love and empowerment as we believe, when these qualities are paired, they are both formidable and capable of initiating change; something we truly wish to bring about within our school and in the wider community.

We believe the last few weeks have greatly reflected this vision, an incredibly busy period particularly for the prefects; starting off with multiple prefect afternoon teas, Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year celebrations and a guided tour for Year 6 students and their families.

Lunar New Year celebrations

Yet, the most notable event was, by far, our International Women's Day celebrations alongside the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, 2018 Australian of the Year - Quantum Physicist Professor Michelle Simmons, and some amazing ‘Superstars of STEM’. Partaking in and viewing a Year 10 Engineering class before answering some of our representatives’ most pressing questions, the day was a wonderful way to mark the amazing work in STEAM our school has undertaken, network with some notable and incredible faces in the STEM industries, as well as appreciate the empowerment of women; something very central to our ethos.

Overall, the day went well and on behalf of our school, we are very grateful to be privileged with a grant of $50 000 to continue the incredible work in STEM, supporting projects such as engineering and bridge challenges, illumin8 and other initiatives for both juniors and seniors.

YEAR 7 NEWS

YEAR 7 CAMP Year 7 had a fantastic start to the year by heading to Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre for the annual camp. The rain held off and we managed to have three sparkling days of action-packed activities aimed at building resilience, working in teams and making new friends.

It was an experience that will be remembered for years to come. The highlight of the camp had to be the high spirited disco where Year 10 Big Sisters put on a special hip hop dance performance and invited all Year 7 students to join in the dancing with them. Year 7 definitely showed everyone that they know how to move!

Congratulations to Year 7 on a spectacular event. Thank you for the kindness you demonstrated towards each other and the bravery you showed in experiencing new things and representing Burwood Girls High School in such a positive light.

I would like to thank Ms Kalogeropoulos, Ms Burkitt, Ms Coulson, Ms Credlin, Ms Mielcarz and the Big Sisters for giving up their time to make the camp a truly wonderful experience.

Year 7 STARR Day Year 7 STARR Day took place on Tuesday 13 March. Students had a fun filled day of activities aimed at building Sisterhood, Tolerance, Acceptance, Resilience and Respect.

The day began with a study skills workshop by Elevate Education followed by a collection of three short plays by Bamboo Theatre about changes during puberty, high school and cyberbullying. Due to the rain, students enjoyed a picnic lunch in the hall where they shared food and got to know each other a little better.

The day ended on a high with a lively and carefree African drumming and dancing workshop by “Salaka: Sharing the Spirit of Africa” where students enthusiastically drummed and moved to the rhythm of the music. Thank you to participating teachers. A wonderful day enjoyed by all!

YEAR 9 SCIENCE FIELD STUDY DAY

Report by Minsandi Mahadurage, Asma Judeh, Emily Pham, Angela Ding and Zoe Nielsen (Year 9) On Friday 9 March, Year 9 students boarded four coaches, all anticipating the exciting day that had been planned for us at the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium. When we finally arrived we were not disappointed and found it was all worth the wait.

Walking through the entrance doors we were greeted and surrounded by some of the most unique contraptions and interactive exhibitions. On offer were fascinating pieces of equipment that test ones endurance or reaction time, an infrared video that showed our surface temperature in colour as we walked past, an ‘invisible phone’ that let two people on opposite sides of the room talk, a bike that generated electricity when you ride it and even dinosaurs (the fossilised kind of course!).

After exploring through each exhibit we were guided into the Science Centre’s Planetarium where we watched a short film called Violent Universe in a dome shaped room. The film taught us about comets, asteroids and meteors hurtling through space and what could happen if galaxies collided. The film gave us a better understanding about

Page 6: MAR EVENT - burwoodg-h.schools.nsw.gov.au · extended catering for EAL/D students and their families broadened curriculum choices such as Futures Learning, Engineering Challenges,

Event Newsletter Page 6 Burwood GHS

what is beyond our planet. We also got to view some of the constellations in our sky which was remarkable and very realistic, all of us almost forgetting where we were.

After that we were treated to a Liquid Nitrogen Show which was a crazy cool experience, literally. The show revealed the remarkable effects that occur when a range of materials are cooled down to -200°C – we were awestruck. We saw some really cool experiments that helped us understand more about solids, liquids and gases.

Visiting the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium was a memorable and super fun experience.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

SHAPE 2017 Monday 26 February saw the Year 12 Design and Technology and Textiles and Design students visit the Powerhouse Museum to attend the SHAPE 2017 exhibition and seminar. Students had opportunities to experiment with 3D printers, sticker makers, Riso printers and virtual reality games.

MATHEMATICS NEWS

Year 7 are participating in the “Maths Pathway” Program in 2018.

The overall philosophy for this program is a Growth Mindset - everyone can achieve and grow in mathematics. Each student works on an individual program from where they are at on the maths curriculum. This point is found by a series of diagnostic tests. Students are then assigned modules by the program about what they are ready to learn. Students choose which order and which modules they will work on. The standard number of modules to be

completed in a fortnightly cycle is 6 but this can be negotiated between teacher and student. Students complete a module in their workbook, check their work as they go and when they are confident the work has been mastered, they click finished and put this on my test. So students are fully in control of what will be on their test and know that they have mastered the content. The fortnightly tests consist of a pen and paper test and an online test. The results of both of these are compiled in the program and the students complete a reflection on the problems and then receive a grade for growth, effort and accuracy. This is followed by an individual feedback interview with the teacher and a goal is set for the following learning cycle. The goals can be related to effort or growth or accuracy. As well as the content work, Maths Pathway involves students completing rich tasks. A short rich task will be completed once per learning cycle. These are problem solving activities which are open ended and are accessible for all students. Each term there will be an extended rich task and in Term 4 this will involve our Year 7 STEM project.

For more information about Maths Pathway follow the link https://www.mathspathway.com/our-model/parents/

Year 7 has been actively engaged in starting the Maths Pathway program. All students are working extremely hard on their individual programs and the growth rates are fantastic to see. We are also placing an emphasis on rich tasks where students work on a problem to their own ability. Please follow the instructions to login to the parent portal to see your daughter's progress.

learning model, as well as other data on your child's progress.

If you have any questions regarding Maths Pathway please contact Heather Oh in the Mathematics staff room.

Rich Task In this and future editions of Event we will be providing examples of rich tasks used as part of Maths Pathway.

The Four Fours Challenge

Use exactly four 4's to form every integer from 0 to 20, using only the operators +, -, x, /, () (brackets), . (decimal point), x2 (square), and ! (factorial).

Example: 0 = 44-44

For advanced readers you can use exactly four fours to get all the integers from 0 to 100.

Choose Maths Awards 2018

Burwood GHS has had great success over the last two years winning prize money and being recognised for our creativity in film making on MATHEMATICS. The CHOOSEMATHS AWARDS are on!

Chinese Australian authors - Spring Festival event

Report by Claudia Tran and Kiyomi Sano (Year 12)

Members of the Year 12 Chinese Continuers class attended The Inner West Council event called “The Uncommon Feast: Lunar New Year 2018” which took place at Ashfield Town Hall on the evening of Wednesday 7 February. The event opened with a mesmerising performance on the Chinese 26-string zither by young musician Eugenia Teng. Then five Asian-Australian writers – Wai Chim, Isabelle Li, Lachlan Brown, Sheila Ngoc Pham and Eileen Chong – discussed their relationship with Chinese and Vietnamese culture, how it affected them in their books and how it made them contemplate their identity.

The writers had many personal discoveries while delving into their Chinese side of their families. How their discovered Chinese heritage influenced what

they write about today The effect of their childhood on their writing Inspiration and motivation arising from family

experiences of China

While right now, such a sophisticated sense of identity may not mean much to us, being confronted by an unknown culture can challenge and change our views on our identity and ourselves, and influence our opinions and views. It was a very worthwhile event.

YEAR 9 & 10 PASS SURF CAMP

Thursday 1 March was a glorious day for our Year 9 and 10 PASS students. Each and every student showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship to take part in the Let’s Go Surfing Program. The weather was kind to us with only some wind and waves. However, the girls experienced some blue bottle stings, but persevered in learning how to boogie board and catch waves in the water.

We would like to congratulate all students on their exceptional behaviour and commitment on the day. The second day will be held on Thursday 22 March and we wish those students who are participating on this day, all the best!

Year 11 Ancient History museum visit

Report by Dottie Bartlett and Ella Del Monte

On Wednesday 28 February, Year 11 Ancient History went on an expedition to the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University. We worked in teams to discover buried artefacts and explore sites. We debated the moral and ethical issues involved in Ancient History and Archaeology. This excursion truly opened our eyes and deepened our understandings of ancient history as we were given an out-of-classroom experience to interact with REAL ancient artefacts, piece together bits of an ancient pot and to learn the processes used by archaeologists. This helped us grasp archaeological perspectives and techniques.

Not only were we able to learn about these concepts, but it gave us a glimpse of what university life is like. Oh, and we also got to see an Egyptian mummy's foot - that was pretty cool too.

The coordinators of the excursion were very enthusiastic, informative and open to all kinds of questions - making it a comfortable learning environment. Overall, as the Year 11 Ancient History cohort, we all enjoyed this excursion thoroughly and we hope other future classes get to experience this excursion too!

Ashfield Pool; the spirit of the sporting houses was definitely live and singing.

There was amazing swimming that occurred in the pool in each and every event and competitor numbers were very high which was fantastic to see. Also, many girls volunteered their time to assist with jobs that were vital to the carnival running smoothly- so a big thank you to all who helped.

The carnival does not run without the incredible efforts of the staff from BGHS and I would like to thank them for all their enthusiasm, effort and professionalism they displayed on the day (specially the colourful costumes). To the house patrons and their house captains- congratulations on an excellent carnival and for raising the ‘house spirit’ to new levels.

However, there can only be one winning sport house and this year, Cumbora placed first overall, second place was Yorrell, third went to Kayeroo and fourth was Kurrajong.

Congratulations to our Age champions for 2018 - 12 years: Georgia Atherton, 13 years: Abbey Connor, 14 years: Lykke Fuda, 15 years: Charlotte Fletcher, 16 years: Isabella Rocher and 17+ years: Olivia D’Agostino.

We wish all the girls progressing onto the Zone Swimming Carnival (Monday 5 March at Lane Cove Aquatics Centre) all the best.

Northern Suburbs Zone Swimming Carnival A small but mighty BGHS swim team of 24 girls travelled to Lane Cove Aquatic Centre on Monday 5 March to participate in the Zone Swimming Carnival for 2018.

The girls were amazing in their efforts with many swimming races back to back all day and our athletes embraced the challenge finishing in the top 3 places for all races, which is an incredible achievement. I would like to thank the parents who were a wonderful support network for the girls at the carnival and cheered on all swimmers from each age group.

It was wonderful to see ALL of our relays finish 1st or 2nd and they will progress to the Sydney North Regional Swimming Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 28 March.

Our brilliant swimmers who took out 5 of the 6 Age Champions at the carnival are:

12 years: Georgia Atherton, 13 years: Abbey Connor, 15 years: Charlotte Fletcher, 16 years: Isabella Rocher, and 17+ years: Olivia D’Agostino.

Many thanks to Ms Sander Burns and Mr Idle for assisting on the day. Our girls not only had excellent results but displayed wonderful school spirit and excellent sportsmanship towards all other swimmers throughout the carnival.

Burwood Girls High School entered three junior teams and three senior teams, all of which competed at an extraordinary level, pushing themselves to their limits in each of their races.

Congratulations to all competitors who competed on behalf of BGHS, and who displayed such excellent sportsmanship and perseverance as they endured very hot conditions.
