ENGLISH AND DRAMA NEWS

We are very excited about the new opportunities in the English and Drama Faculty in 2018. The implementation of the NSW HSC has begun for our Year 11 students who will be undertaking the new HSC examination in 2019 thereby taking senior English in exciting new directions for every Stage 6 course.

We would like to welcome Tristan Carey, a permanent member of staff, who is delighted to be working at Burwood Girls High School. Tristan brings with him outstanding academic qualifications with both a first class honours degree in English literature and a Masters of Teaching from UNSW. Most recently, he has enjoyed teaching at a public school in the Western suburbs and looks forward to coaching Burwood debating teams for the 2018 Premier’s Debating Challenge. We also welcome back Annie Dang who will be with us two days a week this year.

We celebrated the conclusion of Stage 5 with our annual Year 10 film festival Epic Shorts that was a roaring success thanks to the culmination of hard work and brilliant creativity and teamwork by Year 10, 2017. Thank you to all

the students and staff from Years 7-9 who came and shared in the joy of the film festival and a huge thank you to the English, Drama, Music and VET Entertainment staff who made the event possible. Our Industry panel of judges: Paul Melville, Leone Carey, Mark Foster and Liam Kinkhead; collectively expressed their admiration for both the high standard of the films, and the smooth, entertaining and professional quality of the entire show.

Mr Gallaway and I accompanied Years 11 and 12 Drama students to On Stage HSC Performance evening at The Seymour Centre on Tuesday 6 February, which was a fantastic opportunity for our current Stage 6 students to view performance work of the highest calibre and gain inspiration for their own HSC drama major works.

For students in Stages 4 and 5, preparations are underway for this year’s involvement in the Shakespeare Carnival run by Sport for Jove Theatre Company and the school Theatre Sports challenge run by Impro Australia. Thanks to Mr Gallaway for facilitating these opportunities for our students.

Korean Writing Contest Report by Jenny Saw, Year 10

On Friday 6 October last year multiple students from Burwood GHS participated in the Korean writing contest.

We listened to welcoming speeches from directors and hosts about the competition. We were then separated into several rooms for each category (English and Korean).

The topic was “What is your favourite thing about Korea?” I wrote about my recent trip to Korea with the school in the September holidays. I wrote about the activities we did and places we visited but also the delicious food we ate.

For lunch we enjoyed sushi, fried chicken, drinks and other snacks that were available.

We participated in some traditional Korean cultural activities such as making fans and stamps.

At 3pm the awards were announced, and the 1st prize of Korean writing division went to Cici Chen, Year 12 with $200 gift card and the Grand prize of English writing division to me with $300 gift card. We were delighted.

It was a memorable experience, which is why more people should participate! Thank you Mr An.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

Entertainment Industry News Shrek The Musical at Riverside Theatres Students from Elective Music joined Year 11 & 12 Entertainment in attending the Australian premiere of Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure ‘Shrek The Musical’, by Packemin Productions and Riverside Theatre. We went on a backstage tour before the matinee performance and it was amazing to walk across the stage, explore the wings and see the set pieces suspended above our heads operated by the theatre’s counterweight fly system.

The show itself was wonderfully spectacular. An incredible amount of effort and detail went into the designs of each character’s makeup and costuming as well as perfecting their dialects to reflect the familiar voices from the film. After the show we stayed back for the Q&A with the cast and crew to ask every question from how long Shrek sits in make-up (just an hour!) to how many lighting cues in the entire show (248!).

The combination of a highly talented cast, fantastic orchestra and hardworking production crew wooed our lovely group of students and their appreciation for live theatre.
