By Rev. Bobby Basham
District Commander
I am reminded of Jesus’ words to his dis-
ciples on one occasion when they had
given themselves to ministry.
“And He said to them, ‘Come aside by
yourselves to a deserted place and rest a
while.’ For there were many coming and go-
ing and they did not even have time to
eat.” (Mark 6:31)
You give out so much so often, I urge
you to take some time and recharge. Stay
fresh and most of all stay connected to Jesus and to others. No one is
an island; we really do need each other.
Please come aside and join in us in Richmond for our annual Com-
manders’ Conference. I hope to see you there. I am praying for our
gathering and I am excited about our speakers and a chance to see
you, let you know what is happening in both district and national, and
to hear from you.
We have redesigned our commanders’ conference based on your
feedback from last year’s event. There will be more time for interac-
tion, and some instructional training.
Dr. Bob Rhoden our keynote speaker, has a passion to see leaders
encouraged and engaged. Dwight Walters, our Regional Commander,
will be sharing with us, and we have invited Ray Skinner to come to
give us an overview of Navigator with some advanced training (bring
your laptop for this session).
Gary Wagner who has worked diligently on a New Ranger of the
Year District Competition will be presenting a plan for our district to
once again bring back this wonderful part of Ranger skills and compe-
tition to the Potomac District.
We have added new staff members, new Junior Aides de Camp,
and we’ll introduce them to you at our conference as well as some
new staff designations and what they mean.
All of this is an attempt to serve this ministry efficiently and to do
the very best for Christ to help our commanders and boys through
both our events and resources. I urge you, if we can help, please con-
tact myself or any member of the executive staff. We exist to serve.

Come Aside by Yourselves Royal Rangers is a principal ministry of the
Assemblies of God focused on discipling boys for Jesus Christ. We provide Christ-like char-
acter formation and servant leadership development for boys and young men in a
highly relational and fun environment. Our
mission is to evangelize, equip and empower the next generation of Christ-like men and
lifelong servant leaders.
The Potomac District administrative region
of the General Council of the Assemblies of
God takes in Washington, D.C., Maryland,
most of Virginia and northern West Virginia.
Over 100 churches throughout this region currently provide Royal Ranger ministry to
more than 2,500 boys and young men. We use many tools to achieve that goal whether
it be camping, merits or interactive skills, all designed to help develop a boy into a man
while having fun and getting to know God.
We want to develop both men and boys in
mentoring relationships and leadership skills,
and guide them to Jesus Christ. We reach boys, so they may reach another in their
world.

instructors.)

I was looking for some ideas to help us Ranger leaders while
we lead, instruct and inspire
our boys. In the International Jour-nal of Environmental and Science
Education, I found an interesting study, and it reinforced the meth-
ods we Rangers already learn and use.
In Germany, three sci-ence education researchers studied a mixed group of
197 fourth graders who were on a field trip to a zoo with their teachers.
They tested the pupils’ learning during, right af-ter, and a week or so after
the trip. The researchers wanted to see if any gen-
der differences in learning retention existed for the type of field trip the fourth
graders had. Guess what? They found differences in learn-
ing retention, but they also found that cultural percep-
tions and inherent, recog-nized gender differences caused most of that varia-
tion. I’m sorry to say, the fourth-grade guys scored
slightly lower at every measure-ment of the learning, but the lower numbers were consistent during,
after, and longer after the zoo trip. At least they remembered well
what they did learn! So the re-searchers asked themselves, “What caused these boys to learn less to
start with?”
These are the reasons the re-searchers gave for the learning
variations:
A) In Germany, the zoo environ-ment favored the girls.
(Biology is perceived as a girls’ subject in Germany. Women’s tendency to relate personally
to the animals faster also gave the girls a boost.)
groups during the trip. (No one received a prize for high scores.)
D) Girls have more innate motiva-
tion to learn in a school setting.
Now, what does this mean for us Ranger leaders? What can we
do at our outposts to give our boys and young men a learning boost? The researchers gave some sug-
gestions for leveling this learning difference, and their tips
match many things we learn in Ranger Basics! Here are the ways to
offset the differences:
A) Provide male leaders. (We’re here already!)
B) Learn about “guy” top-
ics in a non-school atmos-phere to motivate more learning. (The opposite of
“Be quiet and stay in your seats!”)
C) Employ a stronger man-
agement style. (Use the pa-trol method.)
D) Introduce competition to increase learning for
guys. (Games and fun!)
Indeed, the Royal Rang-ers have the right emphases
already. Now, use your on-target training to “Reach, Teach,
and Keep” some young men for Christ.

N ational Camporama is an event conducted by the National Royal Rangers Ministry at the national Royal Rangers campground at
Camp Eagle Rock, Missouri. Royal Rangers groups from all across the country gather for a week-long, camping-based event. Situated in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, Camp Eagle Rock is the ideal loca-tion for a national event of this size and caliber. With expected attendance to exceed 8,000 campers, the 2012 National Camporama is sure to be the best Campo-rama ever. Groups will begin arriving on Sunday, July 8, to set up camp, which continues through Monday after-noon. The event will then officially kick-off Monday
evening with a celebratory rally at the camp amphi-theater, a huge outdoor theater with state-of-the-art lighting and sound. Camp activities will begin Tuesday morning and continue through Thursday afternoon. Events held at previous Camporamas have featured:
• Paintball Competitions
• BMX Bike Racing
• High Ropes Challenge Course
• Rappelling Tower
• Hot Air Balloon Rides
• Archery & Rifle Shooting
• And much, much more!!! Each day will conclude with an exciting evening rally with contemporary worship, family-friendly comedy, and challenging mes-sages by nationally-known guest speak-ers. Camporama will officially conclude with a final assembly on Thursday evening, fol-lowed by a world-class fireworks demonstra-tion you won’t want to miss. Groups will begin breaking camp Friday morning after breakfast, and all groups will be off site by 9 p.m. on Friday. Make your Camporama a memorable ex-perience by planning additional activities to enjoy with your boys before or after Campo-rama. Royal Ranger events as a chartered member of Royal Rangers. RRA members have given so much through the years that we would like to give something back to them; this is why we will dis-count all district event registration costs by 25 percent for all RRA members. In an RRA member does not charter with his outpost, we will require an annual pastoral en-dorsement of his continued in-volvement in Rangers. Frontiersman Camping Fellowship
Since the Frontiersman Camp-ing Fellowship (FCF) is a separate entity within Royal Rangers, and FCF dues are paid separately, RRA members will continue to be re-sponsible for their FCF dues at their regular cost. However, registration costs for FCF events will be discounted by 25 percent for RRA members. We hope this new policy is helpful to our leaders who through the years have given much time, service and finances to this minis-try. And we hope to encourage those who may be eligible but haven’t yet become members of RRA will consider doing so. How to Apply for Membership
The RRA program was recently inaugurated to provide a method by which Ranger leaders (age 55 plus) may continue to serve as a vital part of the Ranger ministry. Those interested in joining the ranks of the RRA can contact their sectional commander or sectional RRA coordinator for an applica-tion.

T he National Rangers Minis-try Camp (NRMC) sched-uled for Sept. 9-11, 2011 has
been moved from being held at Whiteford, Md. to being held at Elmer, N.J. This is the nearest NRMC to us until 2012. Please consider this camp if you or any commanders you know are working toward their TRAINED training level. Re-member, you can take training events and classes in any order, so if training is available that you do not have, please see if you can make it to the events. Here is the link to the updated camp information and registration packet:

The early registration deadline for this camp is Aug 9, so expect to hear more on this in future Toma-hawks. Save the date! National Rangers Ministry Camp will give instruction in basic outdoor skills and activities, pro-viding leaders with the skills needed to take their Rangers on exciting outpost activities outside their normal weekly meeting times. Instruction in effectively im-plementing the team/patrol method will be offered as a means to facilitate junior leadership de-velopment. Also, leaders will be challenged to connect with God and explore spiritual manhood.
Training from the District Ranger Essentials on April 9 will be hosted by the Tidewater North/Tidewater South Sec-tions. Location TBD. Check the District website and your emails for links to the application and information packets.
Ranger Essentials on April 30 will be hosted by the Capital Maryland, Eastern, and Eastern Shore Sections. Location TBD. Again, check the website, and watch your e-mails for the forms. Ranger Essentials is a one-day interactive-style training event. You will learn how to connect with today’s boys, along with recogniz-ing ministry needs and outreach opportunities. You will discover how to give life-changing devo-tions and how to mentor boys and young men into spiritual leaders. Ranger Essentials is a new training event that is required to achieve the READY level of train-ing in the Rangers Ministry Acad-emy system. We started offering this course in 2010 and have had great reception to the topics pre-sented. Every leader must take this training to qualify for any level within the new RMA system, so it is in our best interest to watch for the next opportunity to com-plete this training.
National Updates Anyone currently acting as a Certified Instructor, Instructor Trainer, or at any level of National Training Staff is impacted by some changes being implemented in 2011 to these positions. In March, at National Conven-tion, we will be attending the latest version of training for the Certified Instructor trainers. This is called Training Academy. It replaces what we currently have in the In-structor Certification Seminar (ICS) and Instructor Trainer Semi-nar (ITS) courses. Once we have attended this training, we will be holding a Training Academy in the Potomac District at some date to be deter-mined later this year.
The only changes of note we have at this point are that the re-certification period for this Train-ing Academy is to be five years, whereas currently we all must re-certify every two years. Also, at each recertification under the Training Academy we all must demonstrate/teach as part of any new or re-certification. How does this impact you if you are a CI or IT currently? If you are currently certified as a CI or IT (ie. you have re-certified within the last three years, counting grace periods) you do not need to deal with the Training Academy until your next re-certification date. So, if you just re-certified in 2010, you have until the 2012 occurrence of the Training Academy to sign up for it. If you are due to re-certify in 2011, you will take the Training Academy class when it is sched-uled later this year. Your certifica-tion will last five years. If you are not currently active as a CI or IT, then you will sign up for the next available Training Academy and be certified under that system for five years. This is the path new entrants into the adult training system will take, and how those who have allowed their CI/IT status to lapse for more than a few years will become certi-fied to train again.
Uniform Updates Utility uniform collar insignia for CI and IT status are no longer available as of January 2011 from Gospel Publishing House. I con-tacted them directly, and there is no specified date for the insignia to be made available, nor is there a replacement insignia or substitu-

tion available. There was mention, however, of information that would be available after March. The way I read this is that we will hear something at National Council and whatever they decide will probably not be available in
our hands until at least later this year. All of those who requested CI/IT soft insignia for the Ranger Util-ity uniform during this last series of re-certifications are on hold right now, until we figure out
what is going to be available. I will fulfill your requests once it gets figured out. The rest of us should be able to get the insignia or its' replacement once it is an-nounced. So, be patient, and realize those collar insignia may need to change later this year. We will keep you all in the loop.
