Frequently Asked Questions What: An evening of laughter, fun, food, drink and fundraising, with a

cocktail hour, traditional Purim Shpiel, heavy gourmet hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and an amazing silent auction. You won’t leave hungry or empty handed!

Where: Temple Shalom’s Social Hall and Sanctuary When: Saturday, March 15, 2014, 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. with Tot Purim at 5:30

p.m. in the Chapel. Childcare: Yes, from 6 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. See details below. Admission: See donation and sponsorship guidelines below.

4 Purim Mitzvot (Commandments) Megillah: Purim Shpiel and Megillah Reading begin at 6:45 p.m. One of the

Purim mitzvot (commandments) is to hear the Megillah read from the Book of Esther twice: once at night and once during the day. This evening you will enjoy a Les Miserable-theme Shpiel!

In order to properly fulfill the mitzvah of Megillah, it is necessary to hear every word during the reading. For this reason it is imperative that people not talk to each other during the Megillah reading.

Gifts to poor: Matanot La'evyonim (giving to the poor) is a mitzvah all year round.

But the mitzvah to do so on Purim is in addition to the general mitzvah of tzedakah (charity). To fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot La'evyonim, one must give to two poor individuals. Please bring non-perishable food on Erev Purim, and we will ensure that it is donated to S.O.M.E. on Purim day. (see S.O.M.E.’s Wish List)

Seudah: It is a mitzvah of Purim to enjoy a Seudah (Festive Meal) and to drink

until you cannot tell the difference between the “cursed be Haman” and “blessed be Mordechai.” There will be food and drink (wine, beer, soda) a plenty to allow you to fulfill this mitzvah. And most of our Members should be able to eat our dairy/fish spread that will include delicious vegan and gluten-free selections.

Giving Gifts: Every Jew is commanded on Purim to give at least one Mishloach Manot (Purim gift basket) containing at least two different types of ready-to-eat food items. Although we will not be arranging this for the congregation this year, please consider fulfilling this mitzvah by making a gift to another member of our congregation, especially one of our new families!

For more information on the four Purim mitzvot, visit here or talk to a member of the Clergy!

Donations and Sponsorships

Donations: The Purim Shpiel is a religious service for which we do not charge admission. All are welcome regardless of a donation. Because this evening is also our largest fundraiser of the year, your donations will be greatly appreciated. We suggest $36 per person, but please consider a higher sponsorship level if you are able:

All of our higher sponsor levels will be acknowledged online, in our program, and in the Shofar. But donations of all sizes are what make it possible for Temple Shalom to offer the programming, services, and people that make our Jewish and spiritual home so vibrant. We thank you for whatever support you can provide!

Other Important Stuff Attire: Come in costume or casual dress. Be sure to pre-order your feather

mask or crown (and groger) when you RSVP. They are $10 per set. But we encourage all to come in more elaborate costumes and masks that will put the kids to shame!

Masquerade: You may ask why is it a Masquerade celebration. Dressing in costume

on Purim is a long tradition with many explanations. The most common is probably that the miracle celebrated by Purim is not one as easily seen as a “sea splitting.” Dressing up in costumes reminds us that many miracles occur only because of the hidden hand of the Eternal. To celebrate that, we hide ourselves by appearing as something else, while our true selves remain hidden underneath the masquerade.

Tot Purim: Make sure your Tots enjoy Tot Purim at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Childcare: The TaSTY Youth Group will be providing childcare and a kids’

dinner from 6 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. while you enjoy the festivities upstairs. We suggest a $10 per child donation to help support TaSTY’s

amazing programming and efforts to build a Temple gaga pit. Please note that TaSTY childcare will be ending at 9:00 p.m.;

checkout from the auction will continue through 9:30 p.m. This will allow our TaSTY sitters to start raising funds for Special Olympics at 9 p.m. with their Dance-A-Thon!

More Kids: The upstairs evening is designed for an adult crowd, and the Shpiel

this year will focus on political humor. But as with all of our Temple events, the faces of our children remind us of our bright future and parents are welcome to invite their children at their discretion to enjoy the upstairs evening, especially the Shpiel!

Questions: Email [email protected], or call the Office.
