Parent’s Night Out
In 2013, we thought it
would be fun to host a
nerf, dodgeball, and
movie night. The kids
would have a blast,
and their parents
would have a night off to themselves. It was one of
the biggest, craziest events we had ever hosted! So
of course, we keep doing it every year.
Thank you to everyone who joined us ... And a big
thank you to parents who provided snacks, and to
students and helpers who acted as role models!

Meaning: TAE/Strength of Mind
The underlying concept of Tae is external gentleness belying internal strength, often characterized by the maxim of the iron fist in the velvet glove. As our confidence and power increase, we paradoxically become more calm, gentle and reasonable. Strength of mind lies behind the core Taekwondo tenet of indomitable spirit.
Meet Your Instructors
Mr. Silva — certified 5th Dan Black Belt.
Mr. Silva grew up in the Azores in Portugual, and was excited about martial arts because of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. At the time, he really wanted to try martial arts, but was not able to start because of the cost. His parents promised that when they moved to America they would sign him up at a studio.
His family moved when Mr. Silva was twelve, but six months later Mr. Silva still hadn’t been able to join a studio yet. He had started to work with a friend on Saturdays (gardening), and used the money to start TKD classes.
He tried his first class with his brother, Paul, and a friend who had previously trained in martial arts. They found Master Suh’s studio, and tried a free class.

Mr. Silva — certified 5th Dan Black Belt.
(continued from previous page)
After the class Master Suh asked Mr. Silva why he wanted to train in Tae Kwon Do, and Mr. Silva said that he wanted to become an instructor and open his own studio at some point. Master Suh wrote on the back of a business card, “May 2nd 1987...Where there is a will there is a way!” and signed it. Mr. Silva still has the card to this day.
Starting up his own studio was a little nerve wracking at first because there were very few non-Korean instructors at the time. Mr. Silva started out by renting a two hundred square foot room in a dance studio from a friend of his, and with a class schedule of six days per week. A few students followed him from his original studio including Shelly Otaguro, his first black belt.
Everything worked out well from there because of Mr. Silva’s good reputation with other schools through tournaments and the TKD community.

It can be difficult to find the right studio to join, and not everyone has a friend who can help them decide which studio is best for their needs.
Rate us on Yelp and tell everyone what you think about SMA! You might just help someone find their new passion.

St. Patrick’s Day Activity
Have you ever built a leprechaun trap? Try designing one on the back of the page! If you build it, who knows? Maybe you will catch one!
Remember: They love green, gold, shiny objects, and chocolate! If you do catch one, look him directly in the eye so that he will tell you the truth about where he keeps his pot of gold.
Good luck!

It’s tournament season! Do you know the Korean word for forms?
March: Vacations! We all take breaks. You might break for an injury, or maybe you are camping.
During breaks, you might forget to stretch or exercise. But when you start again, it will be much harder.
For breaks because of an injury, make sure to give that part of your body rest. At the same time, continue to exercise and stretch in ways that are safe for the injury. Ask your parents for help.
For vacation breaks, try to practice and stretch a little each day. It will be easier to come back, and it will help you always stay healthy.
