Western Hockey League

MESSAGE FROM

WHL COMMISSIONERFrom humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest

junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey

League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has

made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take

great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and

off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional

development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every

category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim

Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have

been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches,

managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None

of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout

the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world

class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events

throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL /

NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A 8 0 U T T H E 'WHL The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host.

The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL.

The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.

Page 8: March 15 vs. Spokane Chiefs

…and to Seattle Thunderbirds hockey and a winning 2015-2016 season as the T-Birds pursue the coveted “Memorial Cup”!

This is surely going to be another exciting season at ShoWare Center! Four T-Birds were selected this summer in the NHL Draft; Mathew Barzal (New York Islanders), Ryan Gropp (New York Rangers), Ethan Bear (Edmonton Oilers) and Keegan Kolesar (Columbus Blue Jackets)… all top NHL prospects playing for the T-Birds this season. Third year center Scott Eansor just took part in the Team USA World Junior Championship Development Camp and will be a player to watch this season. The T-Birds return five defensemen this season from their stalwart defensive corps last season. Donovan Neuls, Nolan Volcan, Alexander True and Kaden Elder, all rookies last season, are going to be important T-Birds in their second season.

Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials!

If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 6 year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, twenty suites, and incredible club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout.

While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you

Go T-Birds!

The T-Birds beat the Kamloops Blazes 4-3 in overtime in Kamloops on November 20 on a Keegan Kolesar goal. The Moose Jaw Warriors defeated the T-Birds 3-2 in overtime on November 28 at ShoWare Center. The Americans beat the T-Birds 3-2 in overtime December 18 at ShoWare Center. The T-Birds beat the Everett Silvertips 3-2 in overtime on January 9 at ShoWare Center when Mathew Barzal scored 35 seconds into overtime. The T-Birds beat the Portland Winterhawks in overtime on February 13 at ShoWare Center when Scott Eansor scored with one second left in overtime. Ethan Bear scored the overtime winner 14 seconds into the extra frame for a 2-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs on February 19 at ShoWare Center.

Shootout Results…The T-Birds have had two game this season go to a shootout. They beat the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2 October 10 at ShoWare Center. Tied at 2-2, Mathew Barzal, Jamal Watson and Keegan Kolesar converted in the shootout. Taz Burman stopped one of two Prince Albert shooters. The T-Birds beat the Everett Silvertips 2-1 in a seven round shootout at Xfinity Arena on March 4. Nolan Volcan was the only T-Bird to score in the shootout. Landon Bow stopped all seven Everett shooters. The T-Birds were 7-5 in shootouts last season.

Hauf Hits 300 Games Played…Defenseman Jared Hauf has played 338 games as a T-Bird to put him in 3rd all-time games played by a T-Bird. If Hauf were to play all four regular season games remaining on the schedule he would end his career with 343 regular season games played, which would put him behind only Glen Goodall (399) and Luke Lockhart (345).

Fastest Goal To Start Game…Ryan Gropp scored nine seconds into the game against Medicine Hat on November 7. This is the fastest T-Bird goal to start the season. The WHL record for fastest goal to start a game is five seconds by the T-Birds’ Dean Sexsmith on January 31, 1987, against the Victoria Cougars. The T-Birds won the game against the Cougars 7-6.

The Chiefs close the 2015-16 regular season with the first of four-straight road games tonight in Kent against the red-hot Seattle Thunderbirds. The Chiefs have experienced some success against the T-birds this season, winning 4 of the first 7 games. The home team has won every game in the season series, most recently a 2-1 OT win by the Thunderbirds at the ShoWare Center on Feb. 19. Ethan Bear scored both Seattle goals, including the game-winner just 14 seconds into the extra frame. Tyson Verhelst made 34 saves on his way to 2nd star honors while Markson Bechtold scored the Chiefs’ goal on a penalty shot in the second period. The Yamamoto brothers lead all Chiefs against Seattle, with Keanu potting 2 goals and adding 4 assists, while Kailer has scored once and pitched in 5 helpers. Scoring has been spread evenly against the division rival, with 8 other Chiefs recording 4 points in the head-to-head matchups. Spokane is looking to rebound after a let-down 6-1 loss to the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday night. Tyson Verhelst made the start in goal and didn’t get much help as the Rockets controlled play throughout the game. Dominic Zwerger scored the Chiefs’ only goal while shorthanded early in the first period. The loss came a day after a 6-1 win over the rival Tri-City Americans at home on Friday. The Chiefs are 3-6-0-1 in their last 10 as they attempt to keep their heads above water while battling the injury bug. Top scorer Kailer Yamamoto missed over a month of action before returning to the lineup last Wednesday. Overage forward Wyatt Johnson and captain D Jason Fram are both out with upper body injuries, along with D Evan Fiala, F Jacob Cardiff, F Ethan McIndoe and D Jeff Faith. The Chiefs have been at least one skater short of a full lineup for five straight games. The T-Birds lead the division thanks in large part to a current 10-game winning streak (14 wins in 15 games). They are particularly hard to beat on home ice, posting a 27-5-2-0 record at home, including 9-straight wins. They beat Everett 1-0 at home on March 11 before a 3-2 win in Portland on the 12th. Seattle is led offensively by New York Islanders 1st Round pick Mathew Barzal with 25 goals and 60 assists in 56 games. New York Rangers prospect Ryan Gropp leads the club in goals with 34 (adding 36 assists for 70 points). Barzal and Gropp both had hat tricks on March 1 vs. Tri-City. Defenseman Ethan Bear (18-43-61) and forward Keegan Kolesar (30-30-60) are also top contributors. Goaltender Landon Bow has been outstanding for the T-Birds lately, allowing 2 or fewer goals in his last 7 consecutive starts, including 2 shutouts. He has a 1.18 GAA and .961 SV% in 5 games this month.

PLAYOFF PUSH… If the playoffs started today, in the 2nd Wild Card position, the Chiefs would face the Victoria Royals in the first round. They are currently in 4th Place in the U.S. Division, 2 points behind Portland for 3rd and 2 points ahead of Tri-City (with 2 games in hand) for the playoff cutoff. Coming into tonight, Tri-City and Vancouver are the two Western Conference teams on the outside. This year would be the Chiefs’ 10th consecutive season reaching the post-season. FILLING IN… The Chiefs have been stretched thin by injuries lately with six players listed on this week’s injury report, including leading scorer F Kailer Yamamoto missing 15 games before returning Wednesday night, F Wyatt Johnson missing the last 22, & team captain D Jason Fram the last 14. Alternate captain D Evan Fiala has been out of the lineup the last 5 games, F Jacob Cardiff has missed the last 6 games, F Ethan McIndoe the last 4 and D Jeff Faith last game vs. Kelowna. RAD JAD… Rookie forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan had a career-high 4 points last Saturday vs. Tri-City (1g, 3a) and has scored a goal in 3 of his last 5 games. JAD was the Chiefs’ 1st round pick (14th overall) in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs have 7 players born in 1998 (4) or 1999 (3) who have played significant minutes this season. Those 7 players have a combined 366 games played (52.3 average). Anderson-Dolan (14-12-26) and Ethan McIndoe (8-6-14) lead the team’s 16 and 17-year-olds in scoring. POWER SHORTAGE… Since Yamamoto’s injury, the Chiefs are 6-of-68 on the PP (8.8%), and since Fram’s injury they are 3-for-54 (5.6%). The Chiefs are 22-7-1-3 this season when scoring at least one PPG, but 9-21-4-1 otherwise. SHOOTOUT STRUGGLES… The Chiefs have held their own in overtime (5-5) but are 0-4 in shootouts this season. Spokane shooters have scored on just 1 of 10 chances while goalies have allowed 7 scores on 9 attempts. HUDSON HORNET… C Hudson Elynuik snapped a 10-game point streak on Feb. 21 but responded with 3 goals in his next 2 games. Elynuik ranked 122nd among North American skaters in the latest NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings. Elynuik had 6 points (4g, 2a) in 7 games before sustaining a lower body injury that kept him out of the lineup from Oct. 10-Nov. 25 but has 33 points since (13g, 20a). He has notched career highs in every offensive statistical category. BENCH BOSS… Head Coach Don Nachbaur is in his 6th season with the Chiefs and recently eclipsed current Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Mike Babcock for first place in Chiefs’ franchise history in coaching wins with 224 (he now has 232). In his first five seasons in Spokane, he posted a 201-127-17-10 record. He is also the career wins leader for the Tri-City Americans with 235. Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (663). RECOGNIZING RAY… On Jan. 29, the Chiefs retired former player and long-time NHL standout Ray Whitney’s number 14. It is the first number ever retired by the franchise. Whitney played for the Chiefs from 1988-91 and was a part of the 1991 Memorial Cup Championship team. Among all-time Chiefs, he is 1st in career points (348), 1st in career assists (207), 4th in career goals (141) and 5th in points per game (1.63). In 1990-91, he posted a franchise record 185 points w/ 67 goals (2nd in franchise history) & 118 assists (1st). He was the WHL’s top scorer & earned the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as POY. A 2nd-round pick in the ’91 NHL Draft, he played over 1,300 games (1,330) and scored 1,064 points (385 goals). He was a 3-time NHL All-Star (’00, ’03, ’12) & won the Stanley Cup in 2006 with Carolina. Other notable Chiefs to have worn #14 include: Buddy Bodman (WIHL, 1963-71), Ryan Duthie (91-94), Trent Whitfield (94-98), Tim Smith (98-01), Jeff Lynch (01-06), Mitch Wahl (05-10), Adam Helewka (12-15). KEANU DIG IT?... Forward Keanu Yamamoto surpassed his career-high 29 points (12g, 17a) scored last season (in 30 fewer games) & recorded his 100th career point on Feb. 14. Combined, the Yamamoto brothers tallied 23 points (11g, 12a) in December and 25 (6g, 19a) in January before the younger Kailer missed much of February with an injury. NEW PLACES, NEW FACES… On Jan. 1, the Chiefs traded 2014-15 team-leading scorer Adam Helewka to the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for overage F Wyatt Johnson, F Eli Zummack (2000-born), Red Deer’s 2nd Round pick in 2016 & their 5th Round pick in 2017. Both Helewka and Johnson had both played their entire WHL career for one team before the trade. F Wyatt Johnson, who was the Rebels’ captain, scored 9 goals and 17 assists in 38 games with the Rebels to start the season. In 235 career games, he has 62 goals and 76 assists, highlighted by a 25-goal, 54-point campaign in 2014-15. F Presten Kopeck was acquired from the Kootenay Ice in a trade for F Riley Whittingham and a 4th Rd Bantam Pick on Jan. 4. Kopeck actually never suited up for the Ice after being traded there from Red Deer on Jan 3. CLAVET CLIMBER… Evan Fiala, an 18-year-old from Clavet, SK, scored his 1st career goal on Oct. 10 vs. Everett, in his 77th career game, and has 5 more since then. The hard-hitting d-man leads the Chiefs with 101 PIM is 2nd with a +18 rating.

DONUTS WITHOUT A HOLE… F Nik Andersen & G Lasse Petersen were selected to Team Denmark’s roster for the 2016 IIHF WJC in Helsinki. Petersen, picked up off waivers in November, calls Swan River, MB home but was born in Denmark. The two Danes missed eight Chiefs games while competing in the tournament. Denmark lost to Russia in overtime in the first elimination round after going 1-3 in pool play. TOSS YOUR TYROLEAN… LW Dominic Zwerger scored his 2nd career hat trick on Jan. 31 in Everett, adding an assist to match a career-high 4-point game. Zwerger’s 1st career hat trick was on Feb. 23, 2014 vs. Kamloops, a 9-4 win in which he and teammate Mitch Holmberg both sent hats flying. His HT was the 3rd of the season for Spokane (Jaret Anderson-Dolan on Opening Night vs. TRI; Adam Helewka on Dec. 4 vs. SEA). ZWERGER DAZZLES IN VIENNA… Zwerger played for his native Austria in the 2016 IIHF WJC Div. I Group A, from Dec. 13-19 in Vienna, Austria. He returned on Dec. 27 with a goal & 2 assists after missing six Chiefs games for the tournament. Zwerger tied for the scoring lead among all tournament players with 3 goals & 4 assists in 5 games. Austria finished 2nd in the tournament (3-2-0) behind Latvia. He was named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 20 (4g, 3a in 3 GP). He scored 2g & 1a in his 100th career game (vs. EVT on Dec. 12) and has 121 career points (42g, 79a). He’s been held off the scoresheet just 14 times through 53 games; the Chiefs are 2-12 in those games and 5-10 when he’s out of the lineup. He has a team-best 5 GWG. Last year, he was the WHL’s Western Conf. ROTY after he became just the 3rd 16-year-old in Chiefs history to score 20 goals (Pat Falloon, 22, 1988-89; Jason Podollan, 36, 92-93) and 4th to score 50 points (Falloon, 78, 88-89; Ray Whitney, 50, 88-89; Podollan, 69, 92-93). He competed with Team USA at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia last summer and scored 4g & 3 assists in 4 games, which tied for the tournament lead in scoring. THE RIGHT FRAM OF MIND… Chiefs’ captain D Jason Fram surpassed his previous career high in goals scored (9) on Jan. 22 at KTN. Fram has played 305 career games, 10th in Chiefs history. Jeff Lynch is next on the list at 313. WHITE COLLAR, GOLD MEDAL… C Jaret Anderson-Dolan and RW Hayden Ostir were selected by Hockey Canada to represent Canada November’s 2015 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in BC. Canada White won gold, beating Russia in the finals. JAD had 1g & 3a in the tournament, including a goal and an assist in the final. Both players played all six games.
