Grain markets were all higher for the week. Wheat found support from dryness developing in the western plains, potentially threatening the crop that is already advancing ahead of normal due to warm temps. Corn and soybeans found support from Brazil’s currency rising in value against the US dollar, making their exports more expensive and giving hope that the US could capture some of their business. Despite the potentially bullish developments for the grain complex, the hedge funds still hold a record short position for wheat, corn and soybeans. The cattle complex was higher as cash markets held their recent gains and offered support to the futures. As we head into spring, beef demand normally increases with outdoor grilling activity. Consumer disposable income is thought to be in much better shape this spring with a warm winter holding heating bills low along with cheap gas. Beef is also less expensive and the temperatures are much more conducive to outdoor grilling than recent springs. So the fundamentals point to a strong demand season for beef when supplies are expected to remain relatively tight. Feeder cattle are also holding their gains from the late February rally primarily on strong demand for lighter weight grazing type calves. Pasture conditions are still in mostly good shape across the plains despite a recent dry spell, and producers are actively buying animals for spring and summer grazing. Financial markets caught a strong updraft the last few sessions, sending the Dow back to key resistance levels which were an old double bottom. The dollar was only slightly lower but metals and energies were strongly higher. The weekly report from the EIA showed that gasoline and distillate stocks were down much more than trade expectations, suggesting that demand is better than supply - welcome news for an industry that has struggled for months with an oversupply situation. The market is carefully watching the recent OPEC agreement to limit crude oil production, which members appear to be following so far. US stocks were stronger as economic data continues to show the US economy on a steady, albeit slow, growth path, a win considering the stalling economies of Asia.
