Describing Physical Characteristics
In general, Deaf culture follows this sequence:
1. Deaf or hearing
2. Gender, Ethnicity / background (optional)
3. Height
4. Body type
5. Eyes, hair and other details such as clothing
But a strongly identifying trait will often be enough for a brief description.

ASL 1-
• Doorbuster (10 min.)• Activity: signing descriptions of famous
people- tape name to someone’s back– “who am I?” game– you sign a question, others can only sign yes or no back!

needs a grey with pink SN Level 2 book:• Narrative Transitions, Jose’s Story- (SN Level 2 book, p. 60-62)• When signing events (Jose’s story boxes), have your
eyebrows up over the time, and then tell what happened/the event. Then pause, and do it again for the next box.

Jose’s Story- team activity (15 min.)
• Activity: You will need 1-2 books per team (pink and grey Signing Naturally Level 2);
• Using Jose’s story, take turns signing his boxes to each other- with transition rules- eyebrows up at the beginning of each box!
• Goal: get comfortable with this- as you will see a rubric for your boxes project tomorrow
