THIRD Sunday of LENT MARCH 19, 2017 THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. Hewhose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our bap- tism into his Body. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS

Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter

seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in

paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to

death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the

thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his

side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals

of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often

upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the

ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel,

as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a

woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one,

shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose

parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the

source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to

dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads

us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our bap-

tism into his Body.

A letter from Bishop Sis, of San Angelo: Greetings in Our Lord Jesus Christ. With this letter I am asking you to help

spread the word about a regional Catholic workshop for those involved in agriculture, which will take place in Big

Spring, Texas, on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. The workshop is sponsored by the Diocese of San Angelo and a national

organization called Catholic Rural Life.

This workshop is for anyone involved or interested in agriculture -- producers, processors, consumers, and anyone

willing to consider how our Catholic document entitled Vocation of the Agricultural Leader. The keynote speaker

will be Mr. Jim Ennis, Executive Director of Catholic Rural Life (CRL) and currently the president of ICRA, Inter-

national Catholic Rural Association. Mr. Ennis participated in meetings in Rome in December 2016 culminating in a

presentation of this document to Pope Francis. The pope was very passionate about the subject of agriculture during

his address. “Your concern for rural life, grounded in the vision of the Church’s social doctrine, is an eloquent ex-

pression of that imperative to ‘till and keep the garden of the world’ to which we have been called, if we wish to

carry on God’s creative activity and to protect our common home,” he said.

Registration forms are available in the church office. Please register as soon as possible, that way hotel reservations

can be made, Fr. Tony will be attending and 2 vehicles will be available for transportation. Those attending will

leave Monday, April 24, stay overnight in Big Spring and head back on Tuesday, April 25 after the workshop.

Mark Your LENTEN Calendar to Hear Eben Emersen

Bring our Parish LENTEN Mission! Monday, April 3 from 6-8 PM - Saint Anthony Church will

welcome back Eben Emerson (see biography). He will speak on

Conversion and tell more of his own fantastic story of an unusual

journey of faith and help us prepare our hearts for a deeper and

holier Easter Season. Please invite and bring friends, family and

neighbors! They won't be disapointed. PARENTS and Friends of

the School Children can hear him the next morning April 4 from

8-9 AM during a Special Morning Prayer session in the Gym.

Spread the word!

Eben Emerson is the husband of Dr. Jennifer Emerson and the

proud father of Benjamin, Catherine, and Elizabeth. Eben

holds a BS and an MS in Biblical studies and has extensive

ministry training. Eben served a missionary for the Churches

of Christ for 3 years in Mexico City and

Ecuador. Upon his return from Latin

America he served as a minister for Span-

ish and English speaking churches of

Christ for several years. After an extensive

study and lots of prayer Eben came home

to the fullness of Christ’s Church at the

feast of Christ the King in 2008. Since his

conversion Eben has been very active in teaching and speak-

ing. He has appeared on EWTN’s “Journey Home” and

EWTN’s “Deep in Scripture.” He has taught deacon formation

classes in the Diocese of Lubbock and has been blessed to

teach in multiple parishes in and out of the area. He is the au-

thor of Catholic on Purpose and currently is the High School

Religion teacher for Christ the King High School. Eben enjoys

playing golf, hunting, and spending time with friends. He is

eternally grateful for His reception into the Catholic Church

and hopes and prays he can be of service.
