Virtue of the month: Forgiveness
March 2011
St. Anthony Catholic School News
Administrator’s Message
How timely that the virtue for this month is FORGIVENESS, not only
because we are in the season of Lent but also because it is an important
cornerstone of our faith and one that Jesus modeled for us in his life and
death. We are reminded that forgiveness is a gift to ourselves as we let go
of the burden of resentment when we forgive another person and it’s a
gift to our children when we teach and model it to them. Please keep our
Grade Two students in your prayers as they will formally celebrate the
virtue of forgiveness as they receive their first Reconciliation later in the
month.
May we never risk the life of our souls by being resentful or by bearing
grudges.
St.Gregory of Nyssa
On behalf of the staff of St. Anthony we wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable
March Break.
Catholic School Advisory Council
Thank you to all who supported our Valentine’s Day Dance-A-Thon, it was a great success and a good time was had by all. Proceeds will go towards various events and resources required to enhance our student’s educational experiences. The council is excited to announce their spring fundraising event which will be a chocolate sale to begin in time for the Easter season. Further details will be sent home as they are made available. Attendance at monthly CSAC meetings is an excellent way of becoming
more involved in your child’s education. Please join us for our next
CSAC meeting on April 5, 2011 @ 7:00.
Outdoor Conditions
There is still a lot of wet and cold weather ahead of us….Parents, please remember to have your children bring/wear boots and have a change of clothing. We want to keep your child/children warm and healthy until the nice weather makes its long awaited appearance.

Ottawa Trip Fundraising Thank you to everyone for supporting our Valentine Chocolate fundraiser, it was very successful. The students will be hosting a Hotdog Lunch on Friday, March 4, 2011. They are getting closer to their goal with every event.
Senior Kindergarten Graduation Please mark your calendars for this exciting event to be held on the afternoon of June 24. In preparation for this event, we will be having a SK Graduation Photo Day on April 14. Watch for more details as we get closer to the event.
Learning Literacy
Reading our loud or along with your child each day has tremendous benefits. It exposes your child to good models of reading
and allows them the opportunity to develop fluency (the ability to read smoothly).
Reading out loud exposes children to topics beyond their range of experiences (e.g. travelling to the moon).
Reading our loud provides parents and children the opportunity to discover and review parts of a story.
Just five minutes talking about the story once it has been read will do the trick.
Look at all the pictures in the story and talk about the things your child notices. Then, together decide where the story took place (setting), who the main characters were and what their problem was.
If your child can identify the problem then together go on a story hung. Look in the story to find ways the main character tried to solve the problem.
Talk about and together agree on what the solution to the problem was.
Reading our loud or along with your child is one of the most successful ways to help children become proficient
readers. It’s lots of fun too!
Allergy Awareness
It is critically important to make the school aware of any serious allergies a student may have. Also, food products which can cause allergic reactions (especially peanuts and peanut products) should not be sent to school.
St. Anthony Green Committee
Time outdoors in a natural setting is a vital and essential
element for healthy childhood development. St. Anthony’s
Green Committee has taken on the challenge in helping to
make St. Anthony an EcoSchool. Our goal is to make caring
for the environment a genuine part of school life
We encourage energy conservation, waste minimization,
ecological literacy, introducing eco themes in the curriculum
and the greening of our school grounds. Make a Difference.
Help build a better school by joining the Green Committee.
The Committee would like to recruit teachers, caretakers,
parents, students and caregivers to join us in our pursuit to
become an EcoSchool. By volunteering you get to know the
community while making a difference to the environment.
Also it will give you a unique opportunity to provide input
and help shape St. Anthony’s outdoor design and
environmental literacy. The Green Committee would like to
empower the St. Anthony community to care for the planet
with environmental knowledge and hands-on activities,
presented in fun, exciting ways that increase awareness and
encourage active community involvement. Please contact
the office if you are interested in joining this committee.
We hope to launch a St Anthony Eco Ambassadors program.
The program will be targeted to students who will be doing
outreach in their own classrooms and on school grounds to
educate their classmates about the 3RS– Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle
The City of Toronto’s Earth Day is Friday April 22, 2011.
Although it is Good Friday, the city will have activities
throughout the Month of April. Clean up day for the city is
April 15 and 16. St. Anthony will be having student focused
events the week of April 18. We will keep you posted.
Let’s make being Green a priority and put
Environmental Awareness on the front page of the school
program.
Safety Tips 1. Student safety is our top priority at St. Anthony’s. If you know that your child will be absent or late, please call and advise us at 416-393-5210. An answering machine is also on 24 hours a day to take your message. Your phone call to the school will save valuable time in the event of an emergency. 2. When dropping off your child in the morning, especially on Barlett Avenue, please pull over to the curb and allow your child to disembark safely. Students should never be dropped off from the middle of the street. Yard supervision does not commence until 8:45. Please do not leave your child unattended in the yard before this time. 3. Please notify the office of any changes in your personal contact information.
