St Patrick's Day sort of sets the tone for the month of March. For at least one day in March, everyone thinks of things Irish ─ including Leprechauns and their Pot of Gold at the end of the rainbow. The legend of the pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow is of course itself an analogy of the pursuit of that which is unattain-able. For just as it is im-possible to ever find the true end of the rainbow, so it is impossible to find that pot of gold. It is al-ways just out of reach. The pursuit of treasure has cap-tured the imaginations of people for centuries. There are countless stories, myths and legends about quests for great treasure. In each of these stories, those who seek such treasures must

Jesus also spoke of treasure. His words record-ed by Matthew say; “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for your-selves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

“Every Man’s Marriage” What every man wishes he knew about what his wife desires most. Authors Stephen Ar-terburn and Fred Stoeker (with Mike Yorkey) believe that every man can meet the secret de-sires of his wife. The problem is, most of us aren't exactly sure what that desire is and how we can go about fulfilling it faithfully. In Every Man's Marriage, you can discover the common misconceptions about what it means to exer-cise biblical authority, and understand the role of submission in the marriage relationship. This groundbreaking book can help men grasp and apply essential but often overlooked principles for marital leadership. Through

This month's study takes us into 2 Kings, a continua-tion of 1 Kings which traces the history of a few righteous and many not so righteous kings that sat on the earthly thrones of Israel. Time and time again we see the various kings trusting other gods, seeking wisdom and guid-ance for their future....and time and time again we see the disastrous results. It is so easy for us to see how foolish they were to think that a pagan idol

could give them what they sought and desired. But who, or what do we turn

candid reflections on their own struggles to achieve biblical unity in their own marriages, along with many years of combined experi-

ence in marital counseling, Arter-burn and Stoeker apply solid, time-tested biblical wisdom to the everyday potential distor-tions that can lead to strife in a marriage. The second book in the Every Man series, this is the perfect follow-up to the best-selling Every Man's Battle. Every Man's Marriage is a terrific re-source for establishing mutual respect and sacrifice in your mar-riage based on Christ's example of loving His bride, the church.

Sociable Seniors This group will meet on Satur-day, March 10th @ 10 AM and is open to anyone who crochets or knits, or would like to learn. During the month of February, ladies from this group donated crocheted baby blankets to the Whittier Pregnancy Clinic that will be a part of layettes provid-ed for new babies as they leave the hospital to go home with their mothers. One of the women in our group also donated a little baby boy's outfit which was greatly appreciated by the Clinic.

A Perfect Day In August a friend of mine named Chuks (pronounced Chooks) and I attended a men’s small group study

where we discussed the topic of heavenly re-wards. We were reminded that a perfect day is when you make yourself availa-ble to help someone without ex-pecting any type of reward. A week after the study, Chuks coworker, Lisa, was going through a divorce and was forced to move into a friend’s house. She request-ed help with moving her stuff into a storage unit. “It shouldn’t take too long,” she said. A lot of her family had volunteered and were also expected to help. Chuks was separated from his wife at the time and didn’t want anything to look improper, so he told me that if I didn’t show up then neither would he. Since I was currently unemployed, it was tough finding an excuse to this kind of pressure. So I offered to help just for the morning. The following day both of us showed up at the house and noticed a U-Haul truck in the

Member’s Corner driveway. I mentioned once again that I was only available for the morning, so we packed my pickup and the U-Haul with all the heavy furniture, appliances, and boxes and left the light stuff behind. When we finished unload-ing into the storage unit, Lisa asked us why we

showed up. We told her, “This is what Christians do…they show up.” Halfway back to Chuk’s apart-ment, we realized we never got a thank you and thought it was odd how quiet Lisa was even though we had been joking around to lighten the mood. While at work a week later, Chuks found out that Lisa’s family never showed up in the afternoon that day to finish up with the light boxes. She and her 14 year old son

finished moving and cleaning late that night by themselves. Through the tears Lisa thanked Chuks over and over for our help. All three of us were suffering losses that month. I believe God put us together to draw strength from the moment. Lisa has adjusted to her new life and is now attending church. It really was a perfect day!

not just gold, or money, or bank accounts, or stock funds. It is also our cars, homes, possessions. It is even the people of our lives ─ spouses, children, family, friends. Treasure on earth includes everything we can see. And Jesus is telling us not to spend our energy and life working at try-ing to preserve it for ourselves. Well, we may understand what "treasures on earth" are, but what about "treasures in heaven"? In Jesus' day, the Jewish people understood the phrase to refer to deeds of kindness done on earth that counted for something in the life to come in heaven. It was a sort of "pay it forward" way of thinking. They also un-derstood the phrase "treasures in heaven" to refer to good and godly character ─ honesty, integrity, selflessness. In both cases it was seen as gaining merit for the life to come. However, if we understand Jesus' mes-sage and mission correctly, he was not about helping people somehow earn a

place in heaven by good deeds done on earth or even by becoming a person of good character. So what could Jesus have meant when he commands his followers to "store up treasures in heaven"? I think the clue to understanding this comes in the last sentence; "For where your treas-ure is, there your heart will be also.” What Jesus wants us to know is that our hearts will be attached to something. If we let them, they will attach themselves to things that will not last. However, if we keep our hearts free from those attachments, we have the possibility of our hearts attaching to Jesus himself. So as I keep my heart free from worldly attachments and bring my heart to Jesus so that it can be attached to him, for he alone can bring me to heaven. Maybe that is how I store true treasure in heaven. So the question is: where is your treasure ─ where is your pot of gold? Because where your treasure is, your heart will follow.
