It was so heartening to see everyone having a good time at our 23 rd An- niversary dance on Saturday 18 February. The dance floor was always full although numbers were down this year with less than 100 people attending. Thank you to the Functions Committee and all their helpers and to Eurasia for giving us a smorgasbord of music to dance to. This will be my second last message to you, my friends and I would like to dedicate this message to you, members of the Australian Eurasian Association of WA. It has been a privilege to be your President for the past two years and I will be leaving office richer for having made your acquaintance. I have met many Eurasian elders who have enriched me with their experiences and ‘stories’ of the old days highlighting the many sacrifices made to give generations to come a better life in Perth. Leaving family and friends and a lifetime of memories is never easy. I often reflect on my life in Singapore – buildings now no longer in existence – many family and friends have passed on or moved away and sometimes I feel a little sad having left what was once my life. Right now as I write this message, two of my dearest friends are making this life changing move from Sin- gapore to Perth and I am sure it will be a bittersweet experience for them. I wish them all the very best. I have come to appreciate the enormous musical talent within the Eura- sian community and their generosity when it comes to sharing this gift with the Association. To all who have kindly given their time to entertain- ing us at the lunches, dances and other events, thank you so much. And to all the Chefs who month after month make our pallets sing with delight, you are all legends! The quality of food produced at all our lunches would put Master Chef to shame. I am indebted to all of you! Thank you, thank you, thank you! For me, the 500 th celebration of the Portuguese Landing in Malacca in August last year was the highlight during my term of office. It brought to the forefront that although this event occurred 500 years ago, its signifi- cance is as important to us today as it was then. Contributions from some of our most respected members of the Association like Joan and Charles Reincastle, Fred and Thelma Minjoot, Horace Santa Maria and the Santa Maria family, Daisy Sequerah and the Sequerah family, Roys- ton Santa Maria, Bertha Theseira and so many others made it an occa- sion to remember and cherish and the Sarong Kebaya is one of the most elegant national dress in existence! Yes I am biased. The Association has so much potential and I know it will continue to grow from strength to strength. Hopefully it will be a place where gen- erations of Eurasians can come to not only experience their unique heri- tage and culture but also to learn some important lessons in life – re- spect, forgiveness, compassion, tolerance and unconditional love. ELECTION OF OFFFICERS AEAWA AWARDS SINGAPORE EA REUNION 23rd ANNIVERSARY DANCE

Dear Members I hope this message finds all of you well and cop-ing with the hot summer. It was so heartening to see everyone having a good time at our 23rd An-niversary dance on Saturday 18 February. The dance floor was always full although numbers were down this year with less than 100 people attending. Thank you to the Functions Committee and all their helpers and to Eurasia for giving us a smorgasbord of music to dance to. This will be my second last message to you, my friends and I would like to dedicate this message

to you, members of the Australian Eurasian Association of WA. Right now as I write this message, two of my dearest friends are making this life changing move from Sin-gapore to Perth and I am sure it will be a bittersweet experience for them. I wish them all the very best.

I have come to appreciate the enormous musical talent within the Eura-sian community and their generosity when it comes to sharing this gift with the Association. To all who have kindly given their time to entertain-ing us at the lunches, dances and other events, thank you so much. And to all the Chefs who month after month make our pallets sing with delight, you are all legends! The quality of food produced at all our lunches would put Master Chef to shame. I am indebted to all of you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

For me, the 500th celebration of the Portuguese Landing in Malacca in August last year was the highlight during my term of office. It brought to the forefront that although this event occurred 500 years ago, its signifi-cance is as important to us today as it was then. Continuation of Mind Your Language Article -

The Portuguese spread their wings wide, reaching Goa in India and Macau in China on their global ad-ventures hundreds of years ago. Naturally, culture and language are remnants of what they left behind. So, does the Portuguese spoken in these regions bear any similarity to Papiah Kristang?

Marbeck certainly thinks so: “There is a common thread that links former Portuguese colonies, and it is a similar language that has a common Portuguese base mingled with the local language of the country.”

Apparently, Papiah Kristang is on the list of endangered languages, along with 6,000 others. It’s reported that every week, two languages die because the last living person speaking the language passes on.

Marbeck is doing her best to keep the language and its tradition alive. She’s even written books like Un-gua Adanza (An Inheritance) and Linggu Mai (Mother Tongue) on the subject, not to mention what is be-lieved to be the first Kristang play, Seng Marianne. “I have been researching and trying to save Papiah Kristang for 20 years because I am a Malaysian Eurasian, born in Malacca and a native Kristang speaker for over 60 years,” she shares proudly

In 2007, telco Digi honoured her as one of the picks for their ‘Amazing Malaysian” CSR programme, nam-ing her “The Kristang Poet of Melaka.” With the award, she wrote and directed the Kristang musical, Ka-zamintu na Praiya.

Marbeck became inspired to preserve her language after reading about Alaskan Mary Smith in a lan-guage jorna, who at 89, was the last of the Eyak people who knew her mother tongue.

Likewise in many remote parts of the world, the last surviving custodians of a language are in the twilight years of their lives. Marbeck is very much aware that she is in a race against time. According to her, learning Kristang isn’t difficult. “Because of the over-prescribed use of other dominant languages in Malaysia, Kristang was left to ‘die’. My hope and wish is that Papiah Kristang, the Malacca-Portuguese Creole, the Malaysian –Eurasian lan-guage or Bahasa Serani – call it what you wish- will create an awareness about identity, unite the Malay-sian-Eurasian community and save a unique heritage.” Commemorating the quincentenary, Marbeck has three books to share: Bersu Serani – Eurasian Verse and Song, Speak Serani- Comprehensive Bahasa Serani Language Book and the Commemorative Ba-

Agenda and Minutes Contrary to previous advice, the Agenda and Minutes of the 2011 AGM are not enclosed with this Newsletter as the Management Committee decided to post them out separately. The Agenda of course will follow the format of previous years. If you are coming to the AGM, please bring those papers with you. Attendance at the AGM - Catering For catering purposes (yes, lunch will be provided for free) it is essential that Daisy Westerhout knows how many members are coming to the AGM. At our lunch on Sunday 11 March there will be a list for you to put in the names of those who are coming. If you are not able to be at the lunch, then it is important that you contact Daisy by phone on 9456 5435 and let her know you are coming along. What to do on arrival It is essential also that on arrival you enter your attendance in the Attendance Register which will be with Charles Reincastle at the main entry door off the padang - a reminder that only financial members will be able to participate in the AGM. Weekend Away at Myalup

On Friday 3rd Feb-ruary 32 members and friends arrived at Myalup Indian Ocean Retreat for 3 days of fun and relaxation. 4 more joined us there in their own caravans. The beach and ocean views were spectacular and the company was as enjoyable as ever. Friendship both old and new, great food to share, music and laughter provided the recipe for a very happy weekend.

Some went to visit the Collie Coal Mine exhibit, while others chose to visit Bunbury and relax later back at the chalets. Thanks to Mario and Mike for the wonderful music, and to Robert and May Harding, Joan and Charles Reincastle for the organisation, and to Dennis and Joan Arklie for organising the Satur-day night Bingo session after a delicious BBQ.
