Greetings From Your FRSA!This past month featured my Health &
Awareness class that had been scheduled
for February 29th at the Fort Bragg Army
Wellness Center. Since our previous class,
back in November had a good turn out of
spouses, I had to schedule it again.
Everyone received free assessments and
the attendance was great! Watch for
upcoming monthly classes as the
information is released via your FRG!
From Fayetteville/Ft. Bragg...Five students from the Cape Fear
region are in contention to become
Operation Homefront's 2012 Military Child
of the Year.
Operation Homefront announced
Friday that the five students are among
100 semi-finalists for the annual award,
which is given to one student representing
each branch of military service.
All five of the candidates in the Cape
Fear region represent the Army and will be
competing against each other along with
15 others. Operation Homefront identified
them as:
Marly Kwolek, 12, of Hope Mills. Her
mom and dad are both soldiers, and Marly
recently spent two years living
with her grandparents while her
parents deployed. She plays 16
instruments and uses music to
escape the stress of military
life.
Brandon Gould, 17, of
Hope Mills. Brandon was
diagnosed with Asperger
Syndrome at the age of 7 and
also suffers from Tourette
syndrome. Despite his father's long
deployments, Brandon has helped build
the community, becoming an Eagle Scout
after four years.
Zachary Herbst, 17, of Pinehurst. An
avid soccer player, Zachary plays for his
school, the N.C. School of Science and
Mathematics, and also spends his
summers teaching at a soccer camp called
Kicking for Hunger. He plans to study
engineering at Georgia Tech this fall.
Erika Jones, 17, of Raeford. Erika lived
with relatives when her mother deployed to
Afghanistan and was responsible for most
household duties. But she also began
pursuing her associate's degree at
Sandhoke Early College High School with
plans to become a midwife.
Marquis Hackett, 17, of Sanford.
Before moving to the area, Marquis
had attended nine schools in six states.
After two years in local schools, Marquis
got into the N.C. School of Science and
Mathematics. He hopes to study computer
science at UNC Chapel Hill.
The semi-finalists will be selected by a
committee of military personnel, teachers,
community members and others. The
award is given to students who
demonstrate "resilience and strength of
character, and thrive in the face of the
challenges of military life."
Operation Homefront will announce
the winners March 8th. The winners will
receive $5,000 and will be flown to
Washington for a ceremony April 5th.

Shrimp Scampi with LinguiniIngredients
• 1 pound linguini
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil,
plus more for drizzling
• 2 shallots, finely diced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
• 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
• Kosher salt and freshly ground black
pepper
• 1/2 cup dry white wine
• Juice of 1 lemon
• 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley leaves
DirectionsFor the pasta, put a large pot of water on
the stove to boil. When it has come to
the boil, add a couple of tablespoons of
salt and the linguini. Stir to make sure
the pasta separates; cover. When the
water returns to a boil, cook for about 6
to 8 minutes or until the pasta is not
quite done. Drain the pasta.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt 2
tablespoons butter in 2 tablespoons
olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute
the shallots, garlic, and red pepper
flakes (if using) until the shallots are
translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes.
Season the shrimp with salt and pepper;
add them to the pan and cook until they
have turned pink, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Remove the shrimp from the pan; set
aside and keep warm. Add wine and
lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add 2
tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons
oil. When the butter has melted, return
the shrimp to the pan along with the
parsley and cooked pasta. Stir well and
season with salt and pepper.
Drizzle over a bit more olive oil and serve
immediately.

What the FRG is up to...Coming up for the FRG we have a
couple of things in the works.
On Saturday, March 10, we will
travelling to Give to the Troops in
Greenville, NC. Give to the Troops is a
great organization that receives corporate
donations that can be handed over to
military units without having to deal with all
the red tape. In order to receive, we go to
their location and donate our time to
package up care packages going to
deployed troops, sort and organize the
pallets of goods that are received into their
organization, etc. If you are interested in
going along, please contact
[email protected] to find out
more information and to make sure that
you are registered as a volunteer. We can
use all the help we can get!
In addition to this, we will be getting
together on the evening of March 15th to
stuff and pack Easter Eggs to send over in
time for the holiday. We are accepting
donations of filled eggs (filled with mini-
toys and/or individually wrapped candy up
until that date. Please contact Karen
Foshee at 910-643-7594 or
[email protected] to arrange to
drop them off at Rear D. You are also
welcome to come out and help us stuff
and pack the eggs to ship at 6:00pm on
March 15th.
Finally, we would like to collect Thank
you cards from friends, families, etc., to
send over to the unit around the 4th of July
holiday. Please spread the word to your
extended family and connections about
this effort. It would be great to see every
one of our almost 400 troopers get a
Thank you as they finish out this
deployment.
If you have any additional ideas or
suggestions for events or activities we are
pleased to receive them at the FRG email
address: [email protected].
