From the EditorA cautious apology to anyone who sent me anything for inclusion this month who discovers it isn’t in. A on-going technical challenge with the old steam-powered computational device meant I lost some files recently. I don’t thing there were any VV items in the list, but if there was, then I apologise.

What stands out this month? Exciting news about our telephone box. It’s now not a telephone box of course but it is. I for one am looking forward to seeing what happens to it. (Question to self - is the one opposite the Old College still in use as a phone box, if not will the parish take over that too?

Elsewhere in the Voice this month there’s lots of note and interest and as ever lots going on in the village to join in with. If you or your organisation don’t publicise what you do ion the voice, then please let us know. There is always room for more in the What’s On section.

Adieu until next month. Pete Hawkins

Living History Group

Tideswell Living History Group met in the Star on Wednesday 15th February

for a social and update. We have been told by the Parish Council that the red telephone kiosk in Fountain Square has been acquired for our use. We are hoping to install an audio device in it, so we are all delighted with this news. We welcomed some new people to our group and we all had an enjoyable time looking at old photographs and listening to people reminisce.

We have had a change of date for our next meeting - this will now be WEDNESDAY 21st MARCH 2012, 7.30 pm at The Horse & Jockey. We will have heard from the Heritage Lottery Fund by this date and hopefully we will be celebrating, so do please come along and join us.

The AGM of the Village Shop Association is taking place on 26th March at 7.30 in

the Village Hall.

All are welcome to attend to hear how the shop is doing and ask questions or offer their thoughts. For more information or to join the committee call 01298 871564.

Meet the Weather Forecasters

A change from the usual Grassheads I’m now making Weather Forecasters -

and I can guarantee they get it right every time!

They are now on sale exclusively at Tindalls. At £2 each we, my sister Brenda & I, are hoping to raise lots of funds for Rainbows Children’s Hospice where her grandson and family stay for respite. If anyone has any spare wool or unwanted knitted scarves which we could unravel we would be very pleased. From 4-ply to fancy wool we would appreciate it! Thank you.

Directors Wanted

Over the past two and half years Taste Tideswell has developed from an

idea into a successful and important village business. We employ 12 people, mainly from Tideswell, and the School of Food is going from strength to strength.

We are now looking to develop our connections with the business community and locals who have experience of running and governing enterprises. The project needs to look to the future and we’re looking for people who would be interested in joining the board to develop the range of skills and experience we have.

People with experience of being a director, governance, running businesses, community work or who are just passionate about the project are welcome to step forward.

The current board is holding an open evening at the School of Food on Wednesday 21st March at 7.30pm for anyone interested in finding out more. If you would like to discuss what is involved, please contact me on 01298 872470.

Meet the Author

Local author, Stuart Courtman, will be at Tideswell Library at 7.30pm on the 5th

March, to celebrate the publication of his first two books.

Blincoe’s Progress and Robert Blincoe and the Cotton Trade both document life and conditions in the infamous Litton Mill, the former through a fictional account of life in the mill as seen through an orphan apprentice Blincoe.

Blincoe’s real life account published in 1828 was influential in improving working conditions in the mills. Stuart reproduces this original text with added historical notes by Stuart.

The event at the library is open to everyone. To book your tickets please contact the library on 01298 871769.

Tidza Ramblers

We were lucky with another fine day for our walk from Bradwell in

February. The aerial view of the village from the Edge was great. ‘ You will tread up with the clouds on Shatton Moor’, quoth Sally Mosley. We did so and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as probably did the pilot of the lone glider we saw. A mound, similar to Offa’s Dyke, which has divided warring factions since the Dark Ages, was fascinating near the end of the walk.

The walk on the 4th will take in Eyam, Abney and Stoke Ford. Meet as usual at Cherry Tree Square at 10 am There won’t be another walk until after Easter so why not join us?

Helen Royle. 872550.

The Leprosy Mission

Leprosy remains a horrible disease, still feared, and prevalent in some of the

poorest parts of the world. But it can be treated and much can be done for its sufferers. On Wednesday 14th March, at 2pm, a speaker from The Leprosy Mission is coming to Tideswell to tell us about some of their work, which brings so much hope to so many affected by this disease. It will be held in St John’s Institute (behind the church), and all are welcome.

The Leprosy Mission is able to raise funds (£80,000 last year) through selling used stamps and foreign currency. If you have any and would like to donate it, please put it in one of the Donation boxes (but not the Bookstall box) at the back of the Parish Church by Sunday 11th March.

MS Get together

Our February Get together involved so much hilarity I can’t even remember

what we were laughing about. Any rumours that I am now banned from VK for too much laughing must be ignored! We did however discuss Beta Interferon Disease Modifying Therapy, drug trials, optic neuritis, the local MS Society’s proposal for a Support Volunteer for the High Peak and whether one should rattle or not rattle one’s tin at Tesco as well as wolf whistles, Devon and the lack of lycra in winter.

Do come and join us. Our next Get together is…..

At: Vanilla Kitchen ~ in the Ice cream Parlour

On: Saturday 17th March 10:30 – 12:00

You are very welcome whether you are awaiting a diagnosis, newly diagnosed with MS or having had the condition long term.

Please do mention our group to anyone you know that has MS as anybody from the area is welcome.

Do call me if you would like a lift or a chat beforehand.

BBC R4 -People’s Passion

Do you enjoy singing? Britain is about to be hit by a singing revolution... and you

can be part of it.

As part of the BBC People’s Passion, the BBC has commissioned a brand new choral work which will be performed by choirs across the country at Easter 2012. This nationwide premiere will unite singers in a moment of national harmony to perform this stunning new work with music composed by Sasha Johnson Manning and lyrics by the poet Michael Symmons Roberts.’

In Tideswell, the choir at St. John’s church will be singing this as part of our Good Friday service at 2pm on 6th April, and we would love people to join us for this special event. Our normal practices are at 11am on Sunday morning (after the morning service), and there will be additional practices on Thursday evenings for those who can’t make the normal practices. We are also looking for some instrumentalists: a pianist or organist; a cellist; and two flautists or treble recorder players. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Katie on 01298 872639 or email [email protected].

Parish Council Matters

Two members of the public attended the February meeting. Much of the

agenda was routine, but there were a few extra items of interest. The former BT phone box now belongs to the Parish Council and will be put to new use shortly. Watch this space.

The Parish Clerk has instigated various fund applications, as a result of which reimbursement has now been received for a variety of works carried out on behalf of the DDDC. Funding from the Parish Council was requested by the Youth Steering Group and the Parochial Church Council. As applies to any donation or grant, the accounts of the appropriate organisation must be viewed prior to donation, otherwise the Council is failing in its Statutory duties. The Chairman, Philip Swarbrick will attend the next Youth meeting.

The snow clearing on pavements was welcomed by many residents, routes queried by others. The snow clearing route has been set out by The Derbyshire County Council, and may be seen on the Parish Notice Board.

The Notice Board with official notices, attached to the Co-op is for Parish Council use only. The adjacent board belongs to the Parish Council, but may be used by any voluntary group within the Parish. Similarly the small board next to the Womens’ Institute board may used by non-commercial groups or residents.

Councillor Sue Barber reported on the Standards Committee of Derbyshire Dales District Council. Councillor Mary Landon

spoke about the Queen’s Jubilee, and it was agreed that though information had been sent to the Parish Council, an independent committee be formed. Members of Tideswell groups may wish to join this team. A meeting will be held at Glen Eldon, Parke Rd on Wed. 28th March at 7.30pm.

The Association of Burial Authorities has notified the Council that old grave spaces will not be re-used.

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

Derbyshire Dales DC Standards The Derbyshire Dales Standards committee has amalgamated with the Audit committee.

Sue Barber is now the only Parish Councillor on the committee, as Council Chris Furness from Bradwell is now a DDDC council member and therefore ineligible. The committee is seeking another impartial member.

She is also the only female committee member, although the Officers include women.

At the January meeting, the official auditor complimented the DDDC on its financial record. (In September, the report from the Local Government Ombudsman , dealing with the Council’s performance in handling referred complaints was also good.)

Training and development for councillors and members was reviewed as was the Planning Code of Good Conduct. The Ethical Framework and Localisation Bill were discussed. The impact of the Localisation Bill is still unknown and open to interpretation. The DDDC committee hope that a strategy and Code of Conduct will be agreed across the whole of

Page 15: March 2012 - The Village Voice

Village Voice15

Derbyshire, so that neighbouring boroughs and districts will comply with the same standards.

The implications for town and parish councils such as Tideswell’s are less clear. The DDDC has a changed role in ‘refereeing’ actions of parish councils and their members. Although the DDDC remain responsible for elections, subsequent activity is the responsibility of the parish councils. It is hoped and suggested that they take the same code of conduct which applies to the DDDC.

The Ethical framework, review of complaints, review of constitution and Annual report Draft will be discussed at the April meeting of Tideswell Parish Council.

Derbyshire Community Foundation

The Foundation was started in 1996 and manages over £6mill in endowment funds. They have a range of grants available to community organisations.

This is from their website “we support the most vulnerable in our society and help enrich the lives of people living in our communities by funding a wide range of groups, including those involved in supporting carers, survivors of domestic abuse, children, young people and isolated elderly residents.”

For more details of the grants they offer visit derbyshirecommunityfoundation.co.uk follow them on Twitter @DerbyshireCF or on Facebook (Derbyshire-Community-Foundation).

Tideswell Running ClubFebruary saw some freezing weather, however that did not stop runners from Tideswell Running Club from entering races.

Helen Grainger continues to produce good times in the cold weather. On Saturday 4th February with the temperature not getting above zero, Helen put in a blistering fast time when she ran 20.58 at the No Walk in the Park 5k in Chesterfield.

Sunday 12th February saw Ben Brindley and Paul Weir driving to Liversage to enter their half marathon. The weather was warmer there than in Tidza and both where feeling well up for a hard run. Ben kept in touch with the leaders and only lost sight of the lead car at 2.5 miles and though finding it hard going in places stormed home in 1:36:28 and a personal best. Paul Weir on the other hand produced a time of 1:44:07 and his fastest half marathon since 2005. Like Ben, Paul found it tough going in places but both agreed the trip was well worth it.

19th February saw Helen travel down to Brighton to race the Brighton half marathon, this popular event on the south coast was sure to test Helen’s pace, she put in a wonderful performance and at times ran against a headwind to do the 13.1 miles in 1.33.17 a new personal best.

Tideswell Running Club meets on a Wednesday 7pm at the Star and everyone is welcome. For details call Paul Weir on 07914817073

At t’Flicks

This month, Tideswell Cinema is showing a

profoundly moving film, shot amidst stunning scenery - The Way.

It is the story of an American doctor, played by Martin Sheen, who travels to France to recover the remains of his estranged son who died whilst walking the Pilgrim Way to Santiago do Compostela. Driven by his immense grief and desire

to understand his son better, he decides to embark on the 800km historical pilgrimage himself.

Along the way he meets three other pilgrims, all with broken lives, and they form a deep bond. This 2011 film is directed by Emilio Estevez.

It will be shown at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th March, upstairs at The George. Guests members are welcome for the evening at £4.75, and anyone wishing to have a meal before the film will receive a 20%

discount off their food.

Youth Club under threat

Derbyshire County Council have new plans to change the way youth

activities are delivered in Derbyshire. In brief, the proposals mean the council would:

• No longer provide front-line activities - youth clubs and the mobile service would close

• Review our youth centres to transfer or dispose of the buildings.

• Continue to provide professionally qualified youth workers to support vulnerable young people and families

• Set up a Youth Activities Grant scheme to support new projects, voluntary, community and independent groups which provide youth services and activities

Not surprisingly there was a lot of opposition from the audience to these proposals. The Council have to make drastic cuts to their budgets and the youth service seems to be one of the victims. They stressed that nothing had been decided yet but if some of the above is acted upon it is highly likely that youth workers will no longer support our club. We must stress that the building will not close but volunteers would be required to run the club.

The consultation period ends on 18th March 2012 and any interested person can fill in the consultation form. This can be downloaded from DCC web site www.derbyshire.gov.uk/youthservice2012 - future of youth activities in Derbyshire - how to participate. We are encouraging everyone to have a look at the proposals and take the time to fill the form in - it may make a difference!

Tideswell History Club

LEAD IN THE VEINS

This was the title of a very informative talk about the lead mines of Great

Hucklow given by Peter and Patricia Miles at the February meeting of the History Club. The talk was the culmination of four years of research by the local parishioners which led to the creation of mining walks trails, the excavation at Silence mine and the publication of a large well-received book on the subject.

The vein itself runs from Tideslow Top, past the back of Windmill, crosses the Bradwell Road, runs along the back of Great Hucklow, then disappears under the shales and sandstones of Hucklow Edge. It then travels on, underneath the Barrel Inn and past Ladywash Farm at the back of Eyam, making it one of the most important mineral veins in England. Mining records for the vein show that it was being worked in the 1200s and it has been worked pretty constantly since then.

Peter and Patricia explained that at Nether Liberty the mine is very close to the Bradwell Road and that in 1998 torrential rain caused a large hole to open up on the side of the B6049, revealing an old shaft and water that could be heard gushing down below. This was some cause for panic by D.C.C! Across the road is Watch and Ward mine which had a little quarry nearby. All this was landscaped and levelled using the rubble from the south side of Tideswell churchyard when Commercial Road was widened in the 1950s.

This now levelled-off area between Windmill and Great Hucklow was once

one of the most complicated mining areas in the County. Here, the vein splits into four separate, vertical, strings of mineral and numerous shafts were sunk by different companies to exploit the galena (lead-ore) bearing vein-stuff. This led to many disputes in the courts, because, how could one lot of miners when deep underground, tell if they were infringing on the territory of another company. Sometimes it seems that our miners spent more money and effort suing one another in the courts than anything else - heaven knows what the atmosphere must have been like in the local pub at night!

Another puzzling thing is; how come that the authorities built a school really close to the site of a lead smelter (the building that later became the Hucklow Playhouse). Two hundred years ago, this area was a real industrial site with many little chimneys belching out smoke from the pumping and winding engines and with big waste heaps of rock and spar blighting the countryside. So Great Hucklow today has a beautiful landscape by comparison.

Acknowledgement was paid to other contributors to the book, including our club members Sheila Martin and Andy Bower for their chapters. Also, thanks were expressed to Doug Nash and Dr. John Beck for making the “University of Eyam” (their massive collection of mine records and knowledge), so willingly available to the project.

Everyone is welcome to join us on March 8th at 8pm. in the Institute when Keith Blood will tell us about “The Bamford Dams”.
