WHAT REALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU SEND A GET WELL MESSAGEby Kirk Mahoney

March 2015Page 1

I was in the throes of refreshing a book for its second edition and of expanding its reach to Google Play, Kobo, and Nook when the CURE website notified my wife and me that it had combined other donations with a very modest donation from us to cover the cost of curing the knock knees condition of a precious seven-year-old girl by the name of Dainess in Zambia.

We used the CURE website to send Dainess a get-well message along with a photo of us finishing a half-marathon in Galveston, Texas — so that Dainess could see that we were real people sincerely wishing her a speedy recovery from half-way around the world.

We got the following message from Abby Tumelo, the CUREkids Coordinator in Zambia, just one day later:

“Thank you for your get well message to Dainess! She had surgery yesterday and is doing well today. This morning she was quite gloomy and constantly complained of pain in her leg. We tried to cheer her up by reading her the get well message! She liked that a lot.”

Abby included this photo of Dainess.

I share this story to make three points:

1. The children whom you see in the photos at the CURE website are not models. They are real kids, with real problems.

2. The people at CURE are dedicated to helping these children physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

3. When you support CURE, you get opportunities to encourage these kids in powerfully direct ways — often within hours of their surgeries.

Without CURE, many of these children face ostracism and lives of quiet desperation in their communities because of their physical challenges and, unfortunately, superstition.

With CURE, miracles happen.

AFRICAETHIOPIAThe “JESUS” film is shown every morning at CURE Ethiopia. The goal of the film is “to help share Jesus with everyone in his or her own heart language.” The hospital keeps versions of the film in many different languages on hand, and parents and children request to see it again and again. We have seen it open the hearts of many, not only in Ethiopia, but at CURE locations all over the world. Please be in prayer for the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of our patients and families during these daily showings.

KENYAOur spiritual team in Kenya reports, “It is a notable and alarming thing to discover that even after many years of public awareness on basic information about disabilities, there is still a growing tension within families when they receive a child with disabilities.” Please pray for education, outreach, and God’s grace to change the way disabilities are understood in the places we serve.

MALAWIOur excellent Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. John Cashman, will be leaving CURE Malawi to return to Scotland this spring. Dr. Cashman and his family have served faithfully with CURE for almost eight years. The patients of CURE Malawi have benefited greatly from the skilled and compassionate manner in which Dr. Cashman has delivered surgical care. Likewise, the full-time staff, fellows, and trainees of CURE Malawi have flourished under his teaching and training. We thank God for Dr. Cashman’s dedicated service to CURE and ask for favor as we search for a surgeon to take his place in a timely manner.

Malawi also continues to recover from the severe floods that occured earlier this year. Spiritual Director Scrivin Kamanga asks for the following: “Pray for more donor aid to meet the needs of flood victims. Due to the floods, most crops were washed away. There is looming hunger in the country. Pray that God will grant the nation alternative sources of food or that help might be found to get maize from elsewhere.”

NIGERWe have a new CUREkids Coordinator to welcome to the CURE family! Fanny Franceschi will be serving as our new CKC in Niger. Fanny has recently been assisting Julie Korn (far right) with art therapy; she truly loves children and is passionate to serve. Please pray for Fanny as she transitions into her new role at CURE Niger. Please also be in prayer for protection over our staff, patients, and their families in Niger, as religious tensions and security concerns in the country continue to rise.

UGANDAThe spiritual team in Uganda shared the following about a clinic held in Mbarara: “We started by talking about putting our trust in God in all circumstances. Many moms who had a spiritual breakdown due to the situations they were going through were encouraged to continue in their walk of faith. We also talked to individual moms according to their spiritual needs. We are glad that at the end of our ministry, some new moms gave their lives to Christ.” We praise God for His faithfulness in calling new moms into relationship with Him and pray for the ability to reach more children, parents, and communities with the gospel.

ZAMBIAIt is so encouraging to hear about the Empowerment Program at CURE Zambia. This program is used as a holistic ministry tool to help women financially support their families in new ways. Our team in Zambia says, “This is an amazing program! It is always our joy to see women who were not financially sustainable become one. We do gardening with the guardians and parents in the ward and also other skills like making jewelry and other crafts.” We thank God for the opportunity to minister to our patients and families in a truly holistic way.

AFGHANISTANIt’s hard to believe it has been nearly a year since the tragic event that took place at our hospital in Kabul last April. As we move forward with our work in Afghanistan, please be in prayer for unity among staff and continued safety and favor with the government.

PHILIPPINESPlease join us in welcoming Marlene Bray, our new (and first!) CUREkids Coordinator at the Tebow CURE Hospital. Marlene and her family have been serving as missionaires in the Philippines since August 2012, and we look forward to sharing in this next chapter of their lives in Davao City. Please pray for Marlene as she settles into her new position. Please also be in prayer for the upcoming Grand Opening celebration on May 1st.

UAETrey Hulsey, President of Oasis Hospital, asks for prayer for the following: “We need to maintain a critical mass of employees committed to our mission. Pray that God would continue to provide people who want to work at Oasis and be part of our ministry by being excellent professionals who love Jesus. Also, we are looking to add two members to our spiritual ministry team. Pray that this process will go well and that we will identify people who will be able to reflect Christ to our patients in culturally appropriate ways.”

CURE ClubfootIt’s incredible to see the growth and impact of our clubfoot clinics, both physically and spiritually. In Malawi alone, in the past month, our clinics report, “the number of caregivers who were introduced to a faith community came to 83; may God be praised for these lives.” We praise God for the ability to use physical healing as a way to provide spiritual ministry at our hospitals and program locations all over the world!

CURE HydrocephalusCURE is committed to strategic planning through the “Strat Op” process. CURE Hydrocephalus will go through this comprehensive planning process on March 26th - 28th. Please pray for this time to be an encouraging and productive experience for all involved.

DOMINICAN REPUBLICLast month we told you about a mom named Lizbet and her twin boys, Victor and Manuel. We are happy to report that along with continued spiritual growth for Lizbet, the boys are also healing well! Elba Lopez, Spiritual Director of CURE Dominican Republic, says, “When they came back to CURE, we couldn’t believe our eyes. We know we are capable of doing miracles when God gives us the wisdom, the tools, the talents, and He works His ways through the doctor’s hands, but we couldn’t believe these boys were the same Manuel and Victor we had first met!” We praise God for the physical and spiritual healing that is taking place for this family!

BOARD AND STAFFWe were thrilled to welcome board member Chris Tomlin to CURE headquarters as the Love Ran Red Tour passed through Hershey, Pennsylvania. It was an encouraging time of fellowship for one and all – as was the opportunity to volunteer at the concert later that evening! We are thankful to be introducing CURE to thousands of new people every week on the Love Ran Red Tour. Please pray that many new friends of CURE would be led to partner with us in healing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God!

HOME OFFICEThis month we are welcoming another new member of the CURE family to the home office, Andrew Myers! Andrew joins us as the CURE Clubfoot Regional Manager and Program Liason for Latin America. Andrew brings experience working internationally as a Logistics Officer and Logistics Program Coordinator with Samaritan’s Purse in the Philippines and Haiti. He also spent time as a Field Director while employed by Nacer USA. Welcome, Andrew!
