MARCH 2016

As parents, we all want our children to be taught by the best and brightest in the profession. I'm sure you will be heartened to know that at Ingleburn High School, we not only have excellent teachers, but we have, in our midst, an award winning teacher!! Ms Simone Cremer, in the English Faculty, was recently announced as a Provider of Outstanding Professional Support to a pre-service teacher by the University of NSW! This is wonderful news and I congratulate Ms Cremer on this recognition. Ms Cremer is the coordinator of our Pre-Service Teachers and plays a pivotal role in supporting the universities in their preparation of our future teachers.

Focus on Learning

The teachers at Ingleburn High School have been working very hard to design quality learning experiences for your children. We appreciate your support in ensuring that children come to school ready to learn with the appropriate uniform and correct equipment. Mobile phones detract from a quality learning environment and should be switched off when at school. If you need to contact your child during school time, please ring the office at any time on 9605 1509. If your child needs to contact you, they are also able to do so through the front office.

Hands On High School

In order to support the transition of our students from primary into secondary school and to showcase the outstanding programs the school has to offer students attending our school, we are presenting our very first, Hands On High School event on Tuesday 22 March, commencing at 5.45pm - 8.30pm, in the school library. If you have a child in Year 5 or 6 in any of our local primary schools and would like to experience first-hand 21st century education, then this event is for you. Parents should have received information about the evening from their child's primary school but if this went astray, there is still time to respond. Please call our office on 9605 1509 to RSVP for the evening.

Staffing Update

I am enjoying my role as Relieving Principal at Ingleburn High School, which is just as well, as I will be continuing in that position for another term. Mr Cheadle remains on extended leave and should resume his role as Principal during Term 3.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

EARLY LEAVE OF STUDENTS

Students will not be allowed to be dismissed from school for appointments of any kind unless they are picked up and signed out of school by a parent at the Administration Office. This procedure is for the safety and the security of all students.

PASS IT ON

The Welfare faculty maintains a uniform pool to assist students in need. If you have any uniforms or jumpers, etc that are in good condition and you would like to PASS IT ON to our students, please leave the items at the Front Office.

Your kind generosity would be greatly appreciated.

ACCESS ONTO SCHOOL GROUNDS

A reminder that parents are NOT permitted to drive into the school grounds when dropping off or picking up their child/children. The slip lane (Acres Lane) adjacent to the school driveway is the preferred option. This rule was put in place some time ago to minimise traffic through the school, which would minimise the risk of injury to all students, staff and visitors of the school.

Furthermore, any parent with prior appointments that require access into the school car park, a reminder that the school is a 5 km zone.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

INGLEBURN HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – MARCH 2016 Page 3

It was disappointing to see only two new parents attend our first P&C meeting for the year. P&C meetings are an informative avenue to find out what's happening at school and to voice any concerns that you may have.

Why be involved in the P&C? We strive as a P&C to make a difference at our school, to be able to give our students access to educational materials/programs to that they would not normally have or to enhance their learning and to provide greater facilities. We cannot do that without parents and citizens investing some time to be involved, whether it's just to attend a meeting or to give an hour help out at our fundraising activities.

HAVE YOU GOT TIME FOR AN INVESTMENT?

Last year the P&C was able to donate over $11,000 to the school. Donations went towards scholarships, rugby, new shade shelters for sporting groups to use away from school, we now have a full set of graduation gowns and sashes for our graduating students at the end of the year, a supply of blazers when students represent the school.

The P&C cannot make these donations without fundraising through the sale of uniforms in our Uniform Shop and from our fundraising events. We are always looking for new ideas for our fundraising events, so come along, be involved, share ideas, and make new friends along the way.

WHAT'S COMING UP

Entertainment Book Fundraiser - Parents will receive an email with all the details of this great money saving Book/Ebook.

Mother's Day Stalls - Wednesday 4 May and Thursday 5 May the P&C will be selling gifts from $2 to $7 for Mother's Day. More details closer to the event.

Bunnings BBQ - Sunday 30 October put it in your diary, we will need volunteers to help cook, serve, etc.

Next P&C Meeting

The next P&C meeting is Wednesday 23 March. A canteen meeting will be held at 6.00pm which will be followed by the P&C meeting at 6.30pm in the Library. This meeting is our Annual General Meeting and we encourage parents to come along and be involved to help make a difference to the school. A P&C Membership fee of $1.00 is due to be paid at this meeting. Being a financial member entitles you to vote on any decisions put forward by the P&C.

Come along meet new parents and enjoy some home baked treats for supper.

SUPPORT UNIT GARDEN TO PLATE PROGRAM

This year a number of students in the Support Unit are taking part in a new program designed to help students develop workplace skills. Part of the program involves a Garden to Plate Program which teaches student skills such as team work, independent work, communication skills, the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), work site safety and eventually food preparation skills. These are all very valuable skills for getting a job in post school life. The students enjoy getting in the garden to weed and water the plants and are looking forward to being able to eat their produce.

RUGBY 2016

It's been a great start to the football season this year, with our Open Boys playing Round 1 of the GIO Schoolboy Trophy. After a close first game resulting in a 18-16 loss to Robert Townson, our boys picked themselves up to come out on top beating Casula 14-10 and finished off the day with an amazing 56-0 win against Lurnea, finishing top of their pool. The boys were commended on their fantastic behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the day, and will progress through to Round 2 in Term 2.

Ingleburn High School also had four of our Year 10 boys selected to referee for PSSA gala days, organised by NRL, at which the boys have been given big wraps for their professionalism and assistance throughout the day.

Alamin Ajelara, Andrew Arthur and Adam Darby of our Under 15s Boys, and Nicholas Bruno, Ken Esmana, Grant Kembrey, Blake Clayton, Amos King and Aziz Jalloh of our Opens have been selected to represent Hume Zone for Rugby League, which is a great accomplishment for a highly competitive tournament.

Girls Rugby League and Touch have also been off to a fantastic start. The girls have been up bright and early for fitness and skill training before school with Hunter Lehauli, and are preparing for their first game at the beginning of Term 2.

Looking forward to a great football season for 2016.

HARMONY DAY

As 21 March was Harmony Day, a few students attended the fourth annual NRL Harmony Day on Friday 18 March. The NRL Harmony Day festival promotes social inclusion and helps celebrate cultural diversity in rugby league and the wider community. The students played a few round robin touch football games, with three wins for IHS, and some teams also had their turn at wheelchair rugby, but unfortunately was called off due to the rain. Robbie Farah from the Wests Tigers and Sam Bremner from the Jillaroos (Australian Women's Rugby League team) also made an appearance to speak about the importance of Harmony in League and take photos and autographs for the players.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION and TRAINING NEWS The NSW Board of Studies has developed Industry Curriculum Frameworks (ICF) for delivery to students as part of the Higher School Certificate.

Each course is based on a national industry training package, which leads to recognition under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The courses are based on national competency standards which have been determined by industry. They are designed to ensure national consistency in the standard of skill and knowledge required to gain a qualification at a particular AQF level.

Students will receive credentials from the Board of Studies on behalf of the RTO which could include Statement of Attainment or Certificate I, II or III.

Many students of our school in Years 9, 10, 11 and Year 12 are currently completing competencies in any one or more of the following frameworks:

• Business Services

• Hospitality

• Retail Services

• Sport Coaching

An Industry‘s Curriculum Framework course requires mandatory workplace learning, as specified in each Board of Studies syllabus. Students complete 70 hours of work placement as part of 240 hour Board Developed Industry Curriculum Framework course requirement. Failure to complete work placement will render the student ineligible for the unit credit towards the Preliminary and HSC Credential.

Currently we have many students in Year 11 who are completing their first 35 hours of work placement. It is imperative that school, home and students work together to achieve the most positive outcome. This means that a quality work placement is selected through the Macarthur Work Placement Learning Program (MWLP), students, parents/ caregivers understand the responsibilities of work placement and that all parties are in communication before, during and after the placement.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

All students doing nationally recognised training need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes students doing Vocational Education Training (VET) when they are still at school (VET for secondary students).

What is a USI?

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference

number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

• creates a secure online record of your recognised

training and qualifications gained in Australia, even

from different training organisations

• will give you access to your training records and

transcripts (available in mid-2016)

• can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere

• is free and easy to create and

• stays with you for life

For further information about USI’s or for the application forms please see Ms Koskinas in the HSIE Staffroom.

Year 10 Work Ready Day

Yet again we had another successful Work Ready Day which was held on the 10th March at Ingleburn RSL. The purpose of the Workplace Learning Program is to encourage young people to gain practical experience of workplaces and learn industry and workplace skills. Led by staff, students were involved in a day of workshops involving the responsibilities and skills required - How to conduct themselves in the workplace, discrimination, WHS, looking the part and talking the talk in the workplace.

Direct experience of a workplace helps students learn quickly and powerfully about the changing nature of work and workplaces; what attitudes and skills employers are looking for; what careers and opportunities are available and what training and further education is needed. Employers help young people understand the workplace as well as careers and job opportunities and directions in industry. This helps young people better plan their transition through school, and from school, to a more fulfilling working life.

Staff and Year 10 had a great day the patrons of the venue were most impressed with the student attitude and polite manner in which they conducted themselves.

Anti-racism – A message from the Anti-Racism Contact Officer

Ingleburn High School has a strong commitment to Multicultural Education, equity and equality. These beliefs permeate our school and Department of Education policies including Anti-Racism Policy, Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy, Multicultural Education in schools, Aboriginal Education and Training Policy and the Complaints Handling Policy, amongst others. This ethos is embedded in our teaching practice and not only is it taught explicitly to students, but it also forms part of our expectations of the safe, respectful learners that attend Ingleburn High School.

Any member of the school community has the right to lodge a complaint and seek a resolution if they have been the victim of racial vilification in the school context. The resolution of such complaints can be either formal or informal depending on the severity and frequency of the abuse. It is my duty as an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) of Ingleburn High School to handle such complaints and to provide mediation, education and monitoring that leads to reduced recidivism of racial abuse in our school.

If any student experiences such vilification, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher and to see myself in the HSIE Faculty in AR0036. If you have any questions regarding our Anti-Racism Policy or the resolution process, please contact me through the school’s front office on 9605 6165.

Mr D. Levkovski Anti-Racism Contact Officer
