Celebrating 100 Days of School!
Children in Pre-K 3 and 4 celebrated this milestone on February 19 by counting 100 things and pasting them on the number 100, putting themselves into the shape of the number, and taking turns, putting 100 “goldfish” into a fishbowl! They are 100
days smarter!
Kindergarteners enjoyed their celebration by working in groups to form the number 100 using manipulatives; celebrating with MARTY; drawing pictures of what they'll look like when they are 100 years old. They formed the number 100 using their bodies; read lots of stories about the 100th day; did 100 jumping jacks and had lots of fun celebrating being 100 days smarter!
The first grade celebrated their 100th day on February 12th. They each brought in 100 things in sandwich bags for example, 100 buttons, pennies, fruit loops, and so on. They had 100th day centers: they filled in 100 charts using number tiles, they read stories about the 100th day of school, they used place value manipulatives to model the number 100 in different ways, they were able to share their 100 things that they brought into class, and they completed a 100th day packet. The packet included journal
prompts such as: When I am 100 years old I will.... and if I had $100 I would buy ... The students illustrated a drawing of what they would look like when they turn 100 years old, they found different ways to make 100 cents using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. The first grade classes also skip-counted to 100 - by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and they read 100 sight words! They really are 100 days smarter, too! The Lenten Season…and Our Promises to Change
For the children in St. Martin of Tours School, the season of Lent is a time of
spiritual preparation for the great Feast of Easter. On Ash Wednesday, each
student wrote on a paper heart their own special promise of a sacrifice or
action they would work on during Lent to help bring them closer to Jesus. All
of these were place in a basket at the foot of a large cross that
the children would see each day, reminding them of these
promises. In art class some of our older children made special crosses while
others designed and painted the Stations of the Cross. The younger ones made
their own pictures of ways that they look to Jesus to
show them the ways they can become better. All are
looking forward to the Seventh Grade presentation of
the Living Stations…and hope that you will join us at
7:00 pm on March 22nd in the upper church.
SMT’s Engineering Club
St. Martin of Tours celebrated National Engineers Week with a
NovaCane assembly. NovaCane is a partnership with Villanova
University to bring engineering to St. Martin of Tours 6, 7, &
8th grades. These students meet once a month with Villanova
Engineering majors to learn some of the basic tenets of
engineering. Each class usually ends
with an activity demonstrating that
month’s lesson. For National
Engineering Week, representatives from AECON, a local
engineering company, discussed with the students the many
jobs in the engineering field. After the presentation, the
students worked in groups to construct domes made of
gumdrops and toothpicks. (Mr. Pavonarius – NovaCane Coordinator)

Read Across America Day!
The National Education Association is building a
nation of readers through its signature program,
NEA’s Read Across America. Now in its 19th year,
this year-round program focuses on motivating
children and teens to read through events,
partnerships, and reading resources. On March 2,
our SMT students participated in this wonderful
project and enjoyed a surprise visit from “The Cat
in the
Hat”
himself!
First grade students also received certificates
for reading at least 20 books during
February…and got their picture taken with
“The Cat” as a bonus! They also enjoyed their
“Green Eggs and Ham” as part of celebrating
Dr. Seuss’ 112th Birthday!
