MARCH 2017 PAGES VOLUME 12 NUMBER 1 A PUBLICATION OF THE PAGES 2016 ANNUAL REPORT RPL RECEIVES $25,000 UNITED WAY GRANT TO SUPPORT EARLY LITERACY The new year is bringing Reading Public Library many fresh and inspiring opportunities, largely made possible due to a generous grant from United Way of Berks County, amounting to $25,000 for early literacy support. DRAMATIC PLAY ...... “The possibilities are endless,” according to librarian Marissa Guidara, who is thrilled about what this means for families visiting the library this year. A developing dream has been to create Dramatic Play Centers for children, now possible with the additional funding. These will include a vet clinic, grocery store, kitchen/restaurant, and building/construction center. Each center will have three month rotations among RPL's main library and three branches. “We are no longer waiting for the community to come to us,” explains Daniel Egusquiza, who is the Outreach Coordinator for RPL. Daniel is optimistic about how this funding will enhance many programs. Storytelling through dance, weekend jazz concerts, and the development of micro libraries are just a few of the things he is planning this year. It is with sincere gratitude that Reading Public Library has accepted this support from United Way. These resources will be deeply beneficial as RPL continues the effort of enriching, educating, and connecting the Reading/Berks community of today. USEFUL TECHNOLOGY ...... Technology continues to advance at RPL. A literacy tablet has been purchased, as well as 13 Playaway Launchpads, which house educational and interactive programs for children and teens. The tablet specifically will be used to aid parents who want to provide educational entertainment for their children while they work on the library's computers. Launchpads offer varying apps with educational themes. Some Launchpads are even available for check out! LITERARY OUTREACH...... Outreach remains a priority for Reading Public Library. Grant funding has enabled the re-introduction of a children's specialist to visit family literacy groups within the city, a program on hold for over five years due to insufficient funding. Some locations receive weekly and bi-weekly visitations, with story times and education about the library's resources. The goal of these visitations is to help families feel comfortable and welcome at the library.

UNITED WAY GRANT TO SUPPORT EARLY LITERACYThe new year is bringing Reading Public Library many fresh and inspiring opportunities, largely made possible due to a generous grant from United Way of Berks County, amounting to $25,000 for early literacy support.

DRAMATIC PLAY......“The possibilities are endless,” according to librarian Marissa Guidara, who is thrilled about what this means for families visiting the library this year. A developing dream has been to create Dramatic Play Centers for children, now possible with the additional funding. These will include a vet clinic, grocery store, kitchen/restaurant, and building/construction center. Each center will have three month rotations among RPL's main library and three branches.

“We are no longer w a i t i n g f o r t h e community to come to us ,” expla ins Daniel Egusquiza, who is the Outreach Coordinator for RPL.

USEFUL TECHNOLOGY......Technology continues to advance at RPL.

LITERARY OUTREACH......Outreach remains a priority for Reading Public Library. Grant funding has enabled the re-introduction of a children's specialist to visit family literacy groups within the city, a program on hold for over five years due to insufficient funding. Some locations receive weekly and bi-weekly visitations, with story times and education about the library's resources. The goal of these visitations isto help families feel comfortable and we l come a t t he library.
