Alexander Heights is truly a unique and unrivalled cliff-top location within the 5-star Aphrodite Hills Resort, ensuring an uncommon degree of privacy for its residents. It is one of the most impressive development locations along the entire south-west coast of Cyprus. There can be no comparison to any other development available, with the magnificent uninterrupted sea views benefitting ALL of the Villas and the majority of other properties.

All but one of the front-line Alexander Heights Villas have now been sold. The purchasers of these stunning Villas are extremely delighted with the exceptional quality of finish and superb range of features in their properties. Each Villa stands in its own private landscaped garden and faces out towards the Mediterranean, enjoying an unusually high level of seclusion. Impeccable attention to detail is evident in each property.

At the same time, we continue to sell with great success the second phase of the luxury Apartments in the Alexander Heights Project, the high demand and sale of real estate proves the quality and confidence in this project.

Construction of Phase II is on schedule, with the Villas due for completion this summer and the Apartments early 2018.

I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Nikolas Vernardakis and I hold the position of Resort Chief Engineer at Aphrodite Hills.

Mechanical Engineering has always been of great interest to me from a very young age. Throughout my education, the gaining of qualifications, training and work projects, I have been fortunate to have acquired a varied and comprehensive knowledge and vast experience in the field. Over the last 14 years, I have worked in the engineering field as a Project Manager for a large, private organisation in Cyprus, responsible for the supervision, organisation and management of the engineering team.

Additional credentials working as a designer and undertaking project management for

mechanical installations in hotels, factories, industrial facilities, universities and public hospitals, have given me the skills and know-how to fulfil client requirements for safe, mechanically sound and practical installations.

Having the overall responsibility for managing the Engineering & Maintenance Operations at Aphrodite Resort, my appointment in this challenging position comes with my determination to ensure that the overall condit ion of a property and customer requirements are the number one priority. Together with my team, we will provide the proper and safe operations of Resort facilities to the highest quality standards as expected by clients and the Resort.

The 2nd tournament of 2017 commenced on Saturday 4th February 2017 with the Winter Open Tournament. The day started with 69 players, a 9.00am shotgun start and the competition was an Individual Stableford format.

The Tournament came to an end at about 1.15pm and everyone returned back to the Golf Clubhouse for an excellent selection of hot food and drinks prepared by our F&B Department - the delightful buffet was enjoyed by all. During the lunch, the Prize-Giving Ceremony commenced with David Stone, our Head of Golf Services, thanking all golfers and introducing our event associate Debbie Dennes from Ion Body Armour. Debbie kindly sponsored one Body Armour watch as the prize for the ‘Nearest the Pin’, winner, who was Ales Chvalovksy, an Aphrodite Hills Member from the Czech Republic.

Roll of honour was as follows:

Winner: Marios Louka with 39 points

Runner-Up: Bill Kemter with 39 points

3rd place: Teresa Tortora Piona with 37 points

Junior Winner: Achilleas Lazarides with 41 points

The Prize-Giving Ceremony concluded with us passing on our sincere thanks to our Associate Partner for making this event a success. Our thanks also goes to GD Golf Academy for the fabulous set-up of the driving range in the morning, to the F&B department for the delicious lunch and of course everyone at the Golf Team who were involved in making the day a huge success.

Kids Club and Soccer SchoolWe are now well into 2017 and the Holiday Residences office is buzzing with excitement! As we write, bookings are up significantly on the same time last year, with many guests electing to choose our unique ‘enhanced package’ which provides ‘hotel-like’ services at their Apartment or Villa. Such services include a daily maid service, breakfast, WiFi, branded bathroom amenities, bathrobes and slippers.

Of course, we won’t forget our younger guests, who are even better catered for than ever before…

With Holiday Residences taking over the management of the Resort’s new Kids Club

in 2015, we have listened to and tailored it around the needs of our own guests. Located in a purpose-built building at the heart of the Resort, our Kids Club features an indoor area, shaded outdoor play areas and a freeform splash pool and water slide providing hours of fun and stimulation. With new toys and soft play equipment planned for the season and flexible opening hours, children and babies from 3 months old up to 12 years of age are well catered for. Operated and supervised by professionally trained childcare personnel, our Kids Club is sure to make the younger Holiday Residences guests feel even more special!

For the budding ‘Messi’ out there, we are also operating the Dream Team Soccer School, a professional UK provider of football fun and development for boys and girls of all ages and abilities. The Soccer School has been successfully operating at Aphrodite Hills for the last 4 years and the school’s qualified coaches are devoted to developing children’s football skills to the highest of standards, whilst keeping their experience fun, safe and enjoyable.

We look forward to a very successful 2017 for both our guests and our owners, who we are confident will reap the rewards of our efforts.

Why avoiding the following 15 foods will support your Anti-inflammatory DietThere are bundles of foods that cause inflammation and cutting back on them will improve your overall health. Chronic inflammation can lead to worrisome health problems, such as heart disease, acne and even cancer, so being aware of the foods that cause inflammation is crucial for a healthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, temporary inflammation is important for your body as it helps fight off injuries and sudden infections. Unfortunately, in today’s world, much inflammation has become chronic due to the foods we consume, and it has become destructive to our systems.

White sugar, deep fried foods and alcohol are obvious culprits, as are foods high in trans fats, gluten and dairy. Some foods, like peanuts and vegetable oil may be flying under your radar as foods you should avoid, so make sure to check out this handy list to get the low down on inflammatory foods to steer clear of.

The good news is, there are certain foods to add to your diet that will help fight inflammation. Fatty oily fish like salmon and tuna are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation. Dark leafy greens fight inflammation due to their high antioxidant content, and berries are also super rich in anti-oxidants, so they should be eaten as much as possible! Chia seeds, avocados, ginger and garlic have also been found to combat inflammation, so work them into your diet as much as you can.

It’s amazing how much better you’ll start feeling once you start decreasing inflammation-boosting foods. Check out below the top 15 foods to avoid in your diet:

1. White SugarWhite sugar, found in products like fizzy drinks, chocolate bars and sweets is one of the biggest culprits of inflammation. It

elevates blood glucose levels and is also highly addictive, which means if you start eating sugary foods, you’ll crave them more and more. Everything in moderation is okay, but the less white sugar you have in your system, the better.

2. SweetenersSweeteners like Agave and Splenda are really no better than sugar itself, and might even be worse. Not only do they cause inflammation but they are also linked to other health conditions and diseases since sugar slows your white blood cell activity.

3. PeanutsThis shouldn’t be surprising since so many people are prone to peanut allergies, but peanuts can cause major inflammation in the body. This extends to peanut butter and oil as well, so it’s probably in your best interest to switch to organic almond, cashew, or other nut butters.

4. AlcoholSorry to be the bearer of bad news, but alcohol causes inflammation due to its negative effect on your liver function. Excessive amounts of alcohol can disturb the way your organs interact leading to inflammation and other diseases. If you can’t eliminate it, then drink it in moderation - everyone needs that glass of wine after a long day, but too much alcohol can be harmful!

5. DairyFrozen yoghurt, cheese, ice cream and butter cause inflammation. Dairy is a common allergen and unfortunately many dairy products contain hormones and antibiotics that your body is better off without.

Page 17: MARCH 2017 Volume 13 Issue 3 - Aphrodite Hills Resortnewsletter.aphroditehills.com/2017/pdf/MAR_AH_newsletter.pdf · 2017. 3. 9. · 13 APHRODITE HILLS HOLIDAY RESIDENCES Kids Club

6. Gluten

Over the past decade or so, gluten allergies have been on the rise. Found in foods with wheat, rye and barley (and of course the grains themselves), gluten products are known to result in inflammation. If you suffer from celiac disease, you have to cut gluten out completely, and even if you don’t it’s best to keep your gluten intake to a minimum to prevent inflammation. Quinoa and buckwheat are good alternatives.

7. Vegetable Oil Vegetable oil is high in Omega-6 fats, which can throw off your body’s balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats, causing inflammation. Coconut oil is one of the best alternatives to cook with.

8. Refined CarbsFoods like white bread, white rice and white potatoes are refined carbs that are no good for your body. They are high-glycemic index foods that lead to advanced glycation end (AGE) products. This leads to inflammation,

not to mention these foods are a main cause of obesity and other health concerns.

9. Red MeatNot that you should cut meat out completely from your diet, but the hormones and preservatives found in meat products these days can be troublesome. Wild-caught fish or tofu are healthier alternatives that won’t cause inflammation.

10. Artificial ChemicalsPreservatives, additives and food colouring can all be found in processed foods, which are really bad for your system. Your body triggers an immune system response since it doesn’t recognize these things as food and you’re left with inflammation.

11. Trans FatsTrans fats can be found in fast and fried foods, cookies, doughnuts and even crackers. Consumption of these no-good fatty acids can spur excess inflammation as well as numerous other health issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

12. MSGMSG leads to liver inflammation, and since your liver is your most metabolic organ it creates systematic inflammation in the rest of your body. You should be eliminating MSG entirely. It can be found in many processed dinners, potato chips, restaurant foods, salty flavoured snacks, and much more. Try your best to cut it out.

13. GMO CornGenetically modified corn is really harsh on your system, and causes inflammation in your stomach. Avoid foods with high fructose corn syrup and corn oil for best anti-inflammatory results.

14. Deep-Fried Foods Some people can become really sensitive to deep-fried foods. Compared to baked and pan-fried food they’re harder to digest and by eating them you increase exposure to free radicals. It’s best to steer clear of deep-fried foods altogether.

15. High SodiumYour body needs it to function, but too much sodium can wreak havoc on your system, leading to liver and heart disease, as well as high blood pressure.

You don’t necessarily need to eliminate all these foods completely from your diet. Moderation is key to a healthy lifestyle. But avoiding these foods when you can, is sure to make you feel better all around.

Aphrodite Hills Riding Club is located in the beautiful forestry area of Lakkos tou Frangou, just 10 minutes from the main Aphrodite Hills Hotel and Resort.

The Riding School is operated by Patricia Brown, a qualified BHS (British Horse Society) Instructor, who has been involved with horses all her life. Having ridden from the age of seven, Patricia started down the path to becoming a BHS Instructor at the age of seventeen and has been involved in teaching ever since.

In 2008 Patricia and her family, including her beloved Welsh Pony Mac, made the move to Cyprus and she has been running the Riding Club ever since.

Patricia’s dream was to create a welcoming environment in which we can offer an authentic Cypriot riding experience. The Riding Club offers quality well-mannered native ponies, who are bred for their kind

temperament and sure footedness, rather than the usual thoroughbreds. Having also worked in the hospitality industry, Patricia found this very useful when working under the umbrella of this 5-Star Resort.

Eight years on, the Riding School is now well established, with twelve well-behaved horses and ponies who cater for all abilities. Riders can enjoy trails through breathtaking countryside and lessons in our large purpose-built arena. The School attracts many holiday visitors and loyal repeat clients, along with numerous local children, of which some have been riding with us for over five years and now compete all over the island.

Everyone is most welcome at Aphrodite Hills Riding Club, including complete beginners! If you would like to give horse riding a try, please call Patricia on Tel: +357 99 998 989 and she will be more than happy to help you!

It’s a harsh reality that although crime is relatively low in Cyprus compared to the rest of Europe, we are experiencing an increase in house burglaries. The reason for this is primarily that as an EU Member allowing freedom of movement for people from other EU countries, the possibility of a handful of less desirable people enter the country.

The Resort has always tried to be pro-active in its stance against the criminal element, by investing in surveillance equipment and the Security Team. Today the role of a Security Officer is a serious and professional occupation, which is why you will find amongst its ranks ex-servicemen and licensed Security Officers.

More and more prestigious companies, not just in Europe, but throughout the world are employing their own Security Officers enabling them to have continuity of service to the highest possible standards.

The importance of Home Security

It’s possible to look at home security as ‘peace of mind’ insurance. It is essential you make your home secure against potential intruders. We all need a home to return to, a place where we feel safe and

secure. Unfortunately, today’s world is full of people who wish to take advantage of the security we feel when in our own homes. By installing an alarm system, you are helping to ensure that the safety of your property and loved ones will not be compromised by being vulnerable to unwanted intruders.

Security Alarm Monitoring

In order to provide the highest possible level of security for you and your family, it is highly recommended to purchase a monitored alarm system, or use our three years’ plan were we offer the Alarm for FREE. Many people are under the misconception that security monitoring isn’t practical or cost effective. However, nothing is further from the truth. A monitored alarm system provides you with consistent high quality peace of mind. If you are one of the many owners who have a monitored alarm system, the Security Team are only minutes away, and will be alerted to any fire, flood or other disaster that is threatening your home.

With a monitored security system, your home will never be left unguarded, you can rest assured that it will be protected 24/7 by a dedicated team of Security Officers.

Security is of importance to us all, please contact us for a FREE quotation and advice.

Maniera Cypria: 13th century icons in CyprusOrganised by the Byzantine Museum and the Cyprus Tourism OrganisationJanuary - July 2017, 9:00 - 16:00, Byzantine Museum Nicosia The exhibition Maniera Cypria highlights the production of iconography in Cyprus during the 13th century and its Eastern and Western in-fuences. During that time, Constantinople was under Latin rule and after the issuing of the Bul-la Cypria mandate, the Church of Cyprus was placed under the Pope of Rome. This period is of paramount importance for the Byzantine art of Cyprus. The multicultural environment cre-ated on the island during the frst century of the Frankish rule, the presence of the Latin Church in Cyprus, the artists coming to the island from the West, as well as the refugees from Syria and Palestine are all factors which infuenced Cypriot iconography. Pollution vs Healthy SkinAll you need to know about protecting your skin… starting from now!

For years, we’ve been warned of the accelerated ageing effects that sun exposure, smoking, a sugar-laden diet and even stress can do to our skin. But the big talking point of 2017 will be pollution.

Increasingly, we live in urban environments full of pollution. Yet whilst most of us are savvy enough to protect our skin against sun damage, until recently, few of us have been aware of how to protect our skin from pollution. So just what is city life doing to our complexions - and how we can prevent the seemingly inevitable damage?

The truth is that anyone who lives in or visits an urban environment will be exposed to all manner of pollutants - from industrial emissions and cigarette smoke to soot and nanoparticles so tiny that they’re able to penetrate deep into the skin. According to experts, something called ‘polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons’ (PAHs) are delivered to the skin via these nanoparticles. And it’s these that contribute to skin ageing.

The result is an impaired skin barrier function, dehydration, inflammation and the breakdown of collagen, which leads to age spots, dryness, a rough texture and loss of firmness.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. There are simple steps you can take to bolster your skin against the onslaught. Here’s how…

• Cleanse: One of the most effective ways to rid your skin of pollution is to simply clean damaging particles off it. Try the ELEMIS SMART CLEANSE MICELLAR WATER - an intelligent purifier that rids the skin of both water and oil-based impurities, leaving it super clean and super refreshed. You can always double cleanse if you live in a particularly polluted area.

• Exfoliate: Great for sloughing off dead surface cells, a twice-weekly exfoliation will also help rid the skin of damaging pollutant particles. Try the ELEMIS SKIN BUFF Exfoliator which contains Bilberry and Chamomile to simultaneously soothe and enrich the skin.

• Add anti-oxidants: Pollution contains free radicals - or unstable molecules that accelerate skin ageing. In order to counteract the effects of free radicals, you need anti-oxidants - which you’ll find in the ELEMIS Cellular Recovery Skin Bliss Capsules for day and night.

• Fortify:Boost skin with a more intensive treatment in the form of a twice-weekly mask. The ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Mask helps increase firmness and elasticity whilst alleviating skin stress.

• Protect: As important as it is to be mindful about pollution, let’s not forget that UV damage is number one. So, follow all of the above, but never forget that sunscreen.

• Have a Facial: Give yourself some ‘me’ time and have a facial. Trust the hands of a highly-trained Therapist at the Retreat Spa and renew your complexion instantly.

Most of us get back pain at some point in our lives. It may be due to a sports-related injury, an accident or a congenital condition such as scoliosis. But most of the time, upper or lower back pain develops during the course of day-to-day life. Repetitive activities at work or home, such as sitting at a computer or lifting and carrying, may produce tension and muscle tightness that result in a backache. You can improve your posture and eliminate back pain by practicing some imagery and a few easy exercises.

Imagery

Think of a straight line passing through your body from ceiling to floor (your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles should be even and line-up vertically). Now imagine that a strong cord attached to the top of your head is pulling you upward, making you taller. Try to hold your pelvis level - don’t allow the lower back to sway - and resist the urge to stand on tiptoe. Instead, think

of stretching your head toward the ceiling, increasing the space between your rib cage and pelvis. Picture yourself as a ballerina or ice skater rather than a soldier at attention.

Shoulder blade squeeze

Sit up straight in a chair with your hands resting on your thighs. Keep your shoulders down and your chin level. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; then relax. Repeat three or four times.

Upper-body stretch

Stand facing a corner with your arms raised, hands flat against the walls, elbows at shoulder height. Place one foot ahead of the other. Bending your forward knee, exhale as you lean your body toward the corner. Keep your back straight and your chest and head up. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds. Relax.

Arm-across-chest stretch

Raise your right arm to shoulder level in front of you and bend the arm at the elbow, keeping the forearm parallel to the floor. Grasp the right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it across your chest so that you feel a stretch in the upper arm and shoulder on the right side. Hold for 20 seconds; relax both arms. Repeat to the other side. Repeat three times on each side.

Practice these imagery and posture exercises throughout the day. Soon it will become a habit.

A few words about pizza… The word ‘pizza’ is thought to have come from the Latin word ‘pinsa’, meaning flatbread (although there is much debate about the origin of the word). The popular Margherita Pizza owes its name to Italy’s Queen Margherita who in 1889 visited the Pizzeria Brandi in Naples. The Pizzaiolo (pizza maker) on duty that day, Rafaele Esposito created a pizza for the Queen that contained the 3 colours of the new Italian flag. The red of tomato, white of the mozzarella and fresh green basil, was a hit with the Queen and the rest of the world. Have you ever met anyone who doesn’t love it? We haven’t either! And we’re here to share our passion with you!

Pizza Dough Recipe:• 200gr Farina 00 Flour • 2 table spoons of Olive Oil• 2gr Dry Yeast • 5gr Sugar • 2gr Cooking Salt • 6 tablespoons of Water

Method:Combine the bread flour, sugar, yeast and salt in a large mixing bowl and combine. While the mixer is running, add the water and 2 tablespoons of the oil and beat until the dough forms into a ball. If the dough is sticky, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together in a solid ball. If the dough is too dry, add additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Scrape the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead into a smooth, firm ball. Leave it in warm place until the dough will double the size for (approximately 30-45 minutes).

Margherita Pizza Recipe:• Pizza Dough • Tomato Sauce recipe • Buffalo Mozzarella • Mozzarella for Pizza • Fresh Basil

Method:- At least 45 minutes before baking pizza

preheat oven to 220ºC- Shape the dough- Do not punch down. Dust dough with

- Spread sauce over dough, leaving a 1-inch border

- Spread the mozzarella cheese throughout the top, but keep it thin.

- Place the thinly sliced tomatoes across the entire pizza.

- Spread the fresh basil leaves, making sure to get some on tomatoes and on just the cheese itself.

- Cook the pizza in the oven for about 9-10 minutes, or until sufficiently crispy and melted to your liking.
