PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Maurice Mahler

MAURICE MAHLER PRESIDENT Important things happen in the month of March (ADAR & NISSAN ), as well as my birthday on the 25th. Years ago, I looked up famous people who share the same birthday, like Elton John. I discovered that t here was a horrendous occurrence that took place on that day. On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York City caught fire, causing one of the deadliest industrial events of the

time. The factory occupied three floors, from the eighth to tenth in the Asch Building. Since it was common practice to lock stairways in order to avoid theft, many workers remained trapped in the flaming building. As many as 146 people lost their lives in the ghastly incident. Tragically, all of the young women were Jewish and Italian immigrants. Unfortunately, the tragedy struck home when my Grandfather’s 17 year old cousin Esther died in the fire. He called her “Sheynah Meydeleh” because she was so pretty, smart, witty and full of life. On my birthday, on Shabbos, we attended the largest Schul in Willamsburg, Brooklyn, on the corner of Bedford and Clymer streets. My grandfather would lift me up from my pew seat to say Kaddish with him for his little Esther and all those poor souls. Every birthday I still continue this family tradition, “It’s her Yahrzeit.” I can still hear his whisper and the tears as he mouthed “Sheynah Meydeleh”. Now! On a happier, joyous note, as of this writing we are planning the tradition I began six years ago – Our Wonderful 2Nd Seder night. This year we are once again planning to have Lox, Stock and Deli do the catering. Why is this night different than all other nights? Because besides the wonderful food, our Rabbi Eli Perlman presents the most fun, exciting and meaningful Seder you have ever

THIS IS OUR RABBI ELI – AT A PREVIOUS SEDER. CAN YOU GUESS WHO HE IS?

ANSWER IS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE NEXT PAGE

ANSWER

The Rabbi is dressed as MOSES

attended. Won’t you please join us this year and please bring family, a neighbor, even a non– Jewish person. This event will only happen if enough people express interest in attending.

For those who don’t know, as I instruct my Rutgers students,

the painting “The Last Supper” by Leonardo DaVinci depicts a Seder and not an ordinary meal. When last I saw the painting, it was so over painted that hardly any of Leonardo’s original hand work can be seen. That’s why they now refer to it as “The Lost Supper”.

PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE TO LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THIS WONDERFUL EVENT!

Enjoy the following poem, sent in to us by one of our Congregants, Alan Richman:\Blooming Ode from a Budding Poet

There are so many ways to know a tree,To marvel at its vivid majesty,

To see and touch its verdant dignity,To read Keats' Endymion poetry. But if you seek Nature's divinity,

Send money to Israel to grow a tree.--Alan Richman

SELL YOUR CHOMETZ FOR PASSOVER 2018PROHIBITION OF CHOMETZ

On Pesach, it is prohibited to possess Chometz (leaven). All Chometz that will not be eaten or burned before Pesach must be sold to a non-Jew. All Chometz utensils that will not be thoroughly cleaned by then are to be stored away in closets or rooms while preparing for Pesach. The storage area is locked or tape-shut, and leased to a non-Jew at the time of the sale. There are many legal intricacies in this sale, thus, only a knowledgeable agent should be entrusted with its execution. The agent acts as our agent both to sell the Chometz to the non-Jew on the morning before Pesach starts and also to buy it back the evening after Pesach ends. Locking your Chometz away and giving the signed Chometz contract to your agent is an easy way of observing one of the most important laws in the Torah (see contract below.) Remember that Chometz, which is not sold and remains in the possession of a Jew over Pesach may not be used, eaten, bought or sold even after Pesach ends.

DELEGATION OF POWER FOR SALE OF CHOMETZI, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Eli B. Perlman to act in my place and stead, and on my behalf to sell all Chometz possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic law (e.g.; Chometz, possible Chometz, and all kinds of Chometz mixtures.) Also Chometz that tends to harden and adhere to inside surfaces of pans, pots, or cooking utensils, the utensils themselves, and all kinds of live animals and pets that have been eating Chometz, and owned by me, may be found at the address listed below or elsewhere.

Rabbi Eli B. Perlman has full right to appoint any agent or substitute in his stead and said substitute shall have full right to sell and lease as provided herein. He also has the full power and right to act as he deems fit and proper in accordance with all the details of the Bill of Sale used in the transaction to sell all my Chometz and/or Chometz in a mixtures, etc., as provided herein. The Power is in conformity with all Torah, Rabbinic and Civil Laws.

CHECKS FOR THE SALE OF CHOMETZ MUST BE IN THE OFFICE PRIOR TO 7:00 P.M. ON THURSDAY, MARCH 29TH

RABBI PERLMAN WILL BE AT THE SYNAGOGUE TO COLLECT THE CHOMETZ BETWEEN

7:00 P.M. AND 8:00 P.M. ON THURSDAY, MARCH 29TH

Rambling with Reb EliBy: Rabbi Eli Perlman

[email protected]

After living 21 years in the same house, a year ago this month, my wife and I wanted a change. We thought we needed a home with different characteristics. We decided to move.

We started our search by interviewing a few real estate agents in the area and told them what we wanted. The way we did that was to walk them through our home, showing them all the things we no longer liked. While we did that, we worked with them to determine how much they thought we could get for our home on the open market.

The agent we liked the most suggested, “If it’s in your budget, I can get this place in shape in about a week and hold an open house on Sunday. That should give us some insight into what the inter-est is and what the best price we should be able to get.”

We agreed and left the house one day, leaving the real estate agent to do her thing. She brought a team of workers in to scrub the walls, touch up some paint here and there, get rid of a bunch of stuff we told her we did not need or want, rear-range some furniture, and add a few tasteful ac-cents here and there.

“Good news,” she told us when we came back at the end of the day. “I am sure that the house will show very well on Sunday and I think you will be pleased with the offers that will come in.”

As my wife and I walked through the house, we looked at each other and said at the same time, “I think I want to stay here!”

“What changed your mind?” the real estate agent asked.

“The house looks so great now, it is exactly what we want! Why move?”

It is funny how a little change here and there can make such a difference. That is why Judaism is a work-in-progress. There is no question that, re-gardless of which stream of Jewish practices Jews follow today, none of them are the same as what the Tanach (Jewish Bible) teaches. Even if we look back at how Judaism was followed in the 1st, the 10th, or even the 15th century, it is very different than the practices we follow today.

The challenge we have now is, like when my wife and I wanted to leave our home to find some-thing better, so many are leaving Judaism think-ing that there is something better. Perhaps if we wash a few walls, touch up a little paint here and there, and rearrange a few things, we will find that Judaism is still the home we have always been searching for and that it continues to pro-vide us with what we wanted all along.

For those who have not been in Shule for a while, come home, find out what you like, and ask about changing the things you do not. All are welcome. Kol Yisrael Chavairim - All Israel are friends.

Dear Members,

We have been very fortunate this year in having a relatively mild winter. I sincerely hope that wherever you are, you are healthy and enjoying yourselves. It has been very quiet here, and I am looking forward to welcoming you all back within the next few weeks.

I know that some of you will be staying in Florida for Pesach. For all of our members, have a Very Sweet Pesach, and enjoy your Seders with your families and friends.

This will be a short message because I have to start preparing for Pesach.

At the risk of being repetitive (only because it is important); This is an Election Year for Congregation, Sisterhood, and the Men’s Club. I need ladies for the Sisterhood Board. We need an infusion of new ideas, and help with the programs. There have been suggestions from members to change the meeting day to Wednesdays. Please call me at (609) 409-1171. I will discuss things with you personally.

Have a safe trip home.

A Refuah Sheleima to all members and their families who are ill.

Shalom

Lillian Rich

Sisterhood President.
